Btw, I really appreciate these videos that show different sides of the quilting world (other than sewing). We all need help with picture-taking, organizing, etc., so these are a welcome adventure.
Thanks for the ideas. I purged my sewing room and donated about 8 boxes of books and magazines to a local lending library and 8 68 gallon rubbermaid totes of fabric to a couple groups that teach kids to quilt and I still have a basement full of fabric and notions and books.
I love hanging my rulers and cutting tools with command hooks, I don’t have little children around to often and when I have parties I lock the room. Safety first.
"I like to put friends together." Lol! My tip: I save empty toilet paper rolls and for any strips I have left over, I wrap it around those (by theme, color, fabric line...whatever you want). *to clarify, I'm putting more than one strip on a roll. I usually have several strips from a jelly roll left at a time.* stick a pin in to hold in place. You can place those alone wherever you store your fabric or get a cheap curtain rod and rig up a system so you can see it all and just roll off what you need.
Get your shoe boxes from The Container Store. Quality is far better than the ones you’re using. Lids fit more snugly and securely and the boxes will last much longer. They also have “men’s shirt” size boxes that would probably fit ideally on that size shelving unit. They’re a little wider and of the same great quality.
This is wonderful. Thank you so much. I will be down sizing to a 1 bedroom unit this year. So I lose my sewing room and am trying to find how I can make a tiny dining area into my sewing area. Because I am an organised person your method fits like a glove.
I have a small space but bigger than a closet. I use a jar, but you could use a mug or a pencil cup. I put scissors, cutters, marking pencils/pens, rippers, gauges, and other tall skinny frequently used tools in it. I keep it on a shelf in arm's reach. When I need something I reach over and grab it. I then fail to put it away, but when the day ends and I say good night to my sewing room, I can quickly put all that away.
oh honey, those small plastic boxes are not going to contain my fabric collection. You need those large totes, you know the ones you can hide a body in, to try and contain fabric.
@@budoneof15 I used cardboard you buy in packages that is made to use for magazine and comic collections. About the size of a piece of paper. I wrapped fabric and pinned onto it like a mini bolt of fabric. They are lined up on a book cart , like they have in the libraries, and I wheel it out to my dining room where I sew, and wheel it into a closet or spare bedroom when I have guests and need to use the dining room.
Pegboard is a great way to hang rulers and scissors (The Container Store has a great metal pegboard system), another great storage container is taking letter size file boxes and use a number systems and/or label as to what is inside (I cover them with decorative duck tape to add color and design to the space, and with those built in handles it makes it easier to lift/carry). I have two of those carts, that I use one for quilting, another for other type of projects, for you can pull together all of the items needed in one place and roll to where you are working.
I like the cheery light blue back inside your cubbies - it's refreshing for your room and mood! Hey do you make quilts with pom-poms? Or maybe do you sew or quilt for yourself? Do you have any projects that you make for men?
Thank you for showing the small containers and how you used them. I like your ideas and will be using the small containers for my fat quarters, scraps, and accessories. Very encouraging.
one tip i do is put a piece of felt in the bottom of items like scissors ie.. cutting tools so they don't roll around but i too use the boxes like yours great idea !
Thanks for the ideas on organizing a sewing room. I am lucky to be setting up a separate room for quilting and some of your ideas are very welcome. Love the cart and shoe box idea. I have a large stash of fabric that need to get out of bins so I can see them. My room isn’t very large, but a mansion compared to a closet! Your organizational skills are totally awesome!
Very nice! I really appreciate you sharing your ideas. Although I have probably at least fifty times more sewing/craitems the ideas you presented can still apply. I know I do need to purge and have started sorting through things already. The only thing I’d possibly add to this, because I do have so much stuff is labeling the front of each container. Thanks again!
I use plastic shoe boxes, too. Consolidate glue gun & supplies for example. In this video, there's too much wasted space in those cubes, as presented. For example, the square ruler that wouldn't fit into the shoe box could have been put on the shelf beside the shoe box with smaller rulers. Put buttons in jars that'll sit beside the shoe boxes. There's also space for books, patterns and such along side those boxes. FWIW, I have to utilize every nook and cranny in my sewing space. :-)
I like to use a large recycled milk powder tin covered with fabric to stand my scissors up in & it's located at the back of my sewing table. Can't be bothered going into boxes with lids on all the time it's not convenient. 😂🙏🙏
It would be nice--at least with the shoebox system--if they made boxes like that, only half the depth, like for the cutting tools, which are swimming in that box and wasting space. :)
I wonder if there's a way to neatly organize supplies that doesn't involve so much plastic. I'm currently setting up a small sewing space in my study and am experimenting with using cardboard photo boxes from Michael's.
Well it is plastic technically, but getting it second-hand: It's easy to find plastic drawer sets at thrift stores in all sizes. What is nice about these is they are easy to clean and the drawers are usually see-through. You can just grab out the whole drawer if you need it.
if you have no collections, color/theme loves and work only one project at a time this could work. nice ideas for someone who is not very into their craft or quilting.
With 660 sq.feet of total living space, there isn’t room for a large stash of fabric, or the luxury of working on multiple projects. Don’t judge how much he is into crafting. He has to be super organized. Plus he must be good at what he does, as he made a professional video for fat quarter shop!
Great tips I love being organized we are currently down sizing to smaller home my sewing space just got cut in half and storage is going to be a problem so thanks for sharing your ideas , where did you get that cart it would be so handy ?
Thank you...I've got a plan. I'm currently sewing in the corner of the kitchen. I bought all these lovely bins...put they are opaque. I'm to take the "extra" notions that I don't use all the time and put them in the shoe boxes.....and organize them in a shoe hanger in the closet. Tidy, out of the way and I can still see/sort them. True story...I'm sewing masks. I'd love to make some with ties, but seam binding is hard to come by and doing it by hand is a pain. While sorting out the crap pile, I found a WHOLE SET of seam binding makers. Spread out in three bins. SMH
Mr. Thompson, your my hero - 600sq. feet! I didn’t know it could be done😮! Unfortunately I’m w/ Ms. Pahl🤭 “body tubs”! Hey, nice ink😀. Mary 🍀 (senior citizen)
I’m new to trying to get around the computer but I’m determined to figure it out. Is there anyway to post your question for giveaways on both you tube and your web page? Hope I have the terminology correct. It would be easier for you on your web page because I believe you already have everyone email. I say do what is easier for you! Have a great day
So he no longer works at Fat Quarter? It's nice to see and hear different things from different types of people, instead of the same cookie cutter interchangeable people. It's a shame he hasn't presented in two years.
Great ideas! I use the shoe size containers as well. Thanks for sharing! I see many things I can incorporate into my sewing studio. Keep the videos coming! I really enjoy them.
This idea is great in your mind or on paper but in reality this has so much wasted space. The shoebox size can only stack 2 in the cube. It would be so great if 4 could fit within 1 cube. I guess if you custom made the storage unit- would be great!
I live in 700 + SQ feet. Even at the bare amount this would not work for me. In order to quilt in my apartment I have had to turn my bedroom into a quilt room and I have a studio like living room. You can't make a king size bed quilt on that little table. Also I have more then one friend that have bought another home to have for a place to quilt. Quilting is not for the small and tidy people it's a big messy addiction!!
It was going great until you nonchalant-ly told us to have a 1.5m² kallax system in our small space... I have those shoe boxes, by the way, and the only space I have to store them is on top of one other. I've worked out you can only get them stacked 14 high before they topple over/create a serious fire hazard...
Nope nope nope this is waaaay too much trouble ... opening and stacking boxes. Boxes are ok for fat qtr to keep clean but that's it. Do you honestly think you,re going to put away your cutter 22 times every sewjng session GET REAL !
@Resell Hobo I am thinking he is saying the extra cutters and scissors, he is not using at the moment. Plus he lives in a 600 square foot apartment in NYC. He has to stay neat and tidy. Good for you if you only have one cutter and one pair of scissors.
It is refreshing to see someone that does not have a huge stash. Great job Christopher. Purging is necessary and liberating.

I guess it's quite off topic but do anybody know of a good site to watch newly released series online ?

@Jermaine Baker Glad I could help =)

Sara at Sew sweetness just introduced me to fabric boards. You can wrap your stash and line them up so you can see what you have at a glance.

C S. Yes that is what she used. I was thinking of buying a sheet of foam board and cutting to size. Do you think that would work?
@@budoneof15
Yes, I took the approx 8 by 11 and cut in half to 4 by 11 for fat q's and smaller left over stripes.
Diane Pahl hahahahaha! I agree with you.

Love it!
Dollar Stores have the clear plastic shoe boxes- inexpensive!

nice organizing ideas, I too love my storage bins. What is the quilt on the chair next to you, it looks very interesting?
Thanks for the great tips. I had to Google EPP glue because I had no clue what that was. 😝
Great ideas
You are awesome!
Stores like JoAnns fabrics will give you empty fabric cardboard thingees for free...you can use them as is or cut them down for smaller bits!
GREAT tips, thanks!
My "sewing room" is a deskdrawer in my daughter's bedroom. I filled the drawers and put all my machines on top.

Not having a stash doesn't necessarily mean you aren't very into something. Some of us are just good at managing UFOs!

Great ideas Christopher, this would work for large spaces as well....
Great Ideas.
a lot a wasted space on the unit. you would have been better off with shelves.
Wanna see your actual "little closet in NYC apartment" rather than in spacious room to film
Too many boxes.
Nope nope nope this is waaaay too much trouble ... opening and stacking boxes. Boxes are ok for fat qtr to keep clean but that's it. Do you honestly think you,re going to put away your cutter 22 times every sewjng session GET REAL !

LMBO @ the idea of putting away anything, anywhere, 22 times each session. That's what's not real.
Makes me wonder if he actually quilts, of just talks talks talks about it
those boxes waste a LOT of space.
I love this method, having smaller boxes to organize would really help me limit my buying too.
