    • The templates are ONLY for the small projects, like a basket, or coaster, or towel wrap and etc.
    • I have also created sewing reference sheets and practice sheets, as well as sketches that you can use and some small-scale garment parts that you can use to practice "slash and spread" techniques and dart manipulations. Instruction sheets are focused on the drafting process and less on the sewing sequence as that is shown in the video. Sewing steps can be sometimes written out, and sometimes referenced back to the original video.

    I was as so blessed to find a gorgeous dresser someone had on the curb for free. Put it in my sewing room ...still trying to organize and decide what goes in, but the top for sure is being used as an ironing board. It's the perfect height.

    I know this is an old video, but it's still very useful! I wonder if it would be a fun challenge to create an energy efficient sewing room for us Europeans over here. Unplugging your machine when not in use, eco mode on your iron, staying warm, stuff like that.

      I was given a small flat iron when I bought something else years ago. I now just use it to press himself, etc. Much cheaper and faster than leaving the iron on and having to use an ironing board.

      Both my banquet tables are height adjustable too the cutting one also has the addition on four elephant feet to heighten it more if I'm doing lots of cutting out and were brought from my local Argos and delivered to my flat the elephant feet were purchased from auto mobility store expensive but we'll worth the save on my back as it can go so easily and best of all I can shut the door when I've finished for the day and not have to have a major tidy and on the whole I tidy as I go as gives me more motivation the next time plus it also has to serve as my airing space when if done the washing as there's absolutely no outside drying I do some times I shut the door leave the window open so it never takes long for my washing to dry need to move clothes airer and rail into my lounge/kitchen

    For pattern storage, I use your second option, the clear plastic three ring binder. I put them in a large 3 ring binder and use notebook dividers to separate them. The 3 ring binders can be labeled (example dolls) with further breakdowns inside the binder. I then can put the binders on a shelf making it easy to locate children's clothing, dolls, quilt patterns, etc.

    • @wendyfay16
      @wendyfay16 Год назад

      Me too! However for patterns that I use regularly I cut them out of project card and punch holes in them to hang on a large ring. I peg each project together with a small bulldog clop and hang them in the fitted robe. For my various sewing machine presser feet, I use the small pockets on the plastic shoe holders, or plastic jewellery holders that have larger pockets on one side and small ones on the other side. I label the pockets with the names of the presser feet then when I need one, I can easily find the right one. It also helps to keep track of what feet may be missing at the end of a project. I'm planning to photograph each foot and write the 'how to' instructions so that I don't forget which foot does what. These are fabulous because they can also hang up without taking up any space. Shoe boxes can also be stored in the shoe holders that you use for larger pieces of fabric so that you can hang them on the roller clothes rack. Vertical storage saves so much space but still allows you to see what you have. I had a fitted wardrobe that didn't have any shelves so I bought a small cupboard and took the doors off it and it fitted perfectly inside the fitted robe so I had the shelves I wanted and could take them with me when I moved!

  • @wendyfay16

    You can also fold all of your fabrics using pieces of card as a size template ... I use a smaller piece of cardboard for smaller pieces of fabric, especially for patchwork fabric, or even smaller pieces left over from other sewing projects. I usually like to try to cut off any small odd bits of fabric from these to keep them tidy. I do small ones that I'm going to store vertically in shoeboxes. I cover the shoeboxes with cheap, or leftover wrapping paper first.
    Before I fold my fabric pieces, I measure them and attach a small tag of card with the size of the fabric. I the punch a hole in the card to make it a tag and tie a little leftover ribbon or string to it, then attach it to a large coated paperclip (we don't want rust marks) that I use to keep the fabric together. I can then quickly and easily see exactly what fabric I have, as well as its size. These fit really well on a bookcase. I do the same thing for larger pieces of fabric using a larger piece of card but I store those flat in the shoe holders that I hang in my fitted robe. This may sound time consuming but once you've got everything organised it's then easy to do it each time you buy fabric. I also cut pieces of card for all my laces & bias tapes & store in shoeboxes, but I like to wrap my ribbons around cardboard tube leftover from wrapping paper. I store all my buttons, etc in clear coffee jars & also stack onto the bookcase shelves. I also use pegboard and attach baskets both rectangle & round flowerpot shape for scissors and roller cutters.

    Great tips for organizing a sewing room. I have a clear plastic rolling stand with drawers that I put tools, sewing closures, buttons, etc. labeling each drawer. I find I constantly am reorganizing. I really like the water jug idea for current projects, it is so easy to get disorganized when I put a project down for a while.

    I recently found two old doors in great shape. I mounted them horizontally on separate walls. One is a handicap door with a huge cutting matt that I got at JoAnn's. Most of the time I use my monogram machine on it. I mounted it at hip level. But it's so handy at cutting fabric with my rotary cutter. The other door is a skinny door, again mounted horizontally. I mounted it lower for my serger and sewing machine. I used the door knob hole to run my chords thru to the electrical plug. It works perfect! Love all the tips except cutting on the floor.

    I find what you say about storing like with like is very efficient for fabric!
    My mum and I (currently sewing - and living! - under the same roof) have a lot of utilitarian fabric, such as jean scraps for repairing men work trousers, or very strong cotton for covering garden chairs, etc. We keep these fabrics in a big trunk we use as a coffee table. We don't use them every day and they would take up a massive amount of space in the sewing room, so it makes sense to keep them out of sight.
    We keep smaller scraps or fat squares together in a separate box, as we know we can't make a garment from one of them, but we use them for dolly clothes, patchwork, or smaller projects like wallets, pouches, scrunchies....
    For our main stash, we have piles of neatly folded fabrics on a book shelf, along with boxes with chiffon and lining fabrics (because yes, we have the same problem as you if fold them in a pile!)
    And then we have a basket with 'currently sewing' projects, because who has time to finish a project in one go, with a baby and two men to feed? XD We try to finish that before we start anything new (hint: we NEVER manage to help ourselves).
    Now, it sounds like we have our stuff together. That's the theory!

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  5 лет назад +1

      Abigail, that is fantastic - you ahve a great fabric organization going on there! I remember you said once that you and your mom finish each others projects - that is so awesome! Thank you again and happy sewing!

    • @wendyfay16
      @wendyfay16 Год назад

      I'm also 70 but unfortunately I can't get up off the floor unless I crawl around to find something to pull myself up on ... but it sure beats being in my wheelchair! :) I need help to cut out and to thread the sewing machine needle which is very frustrating, especially if I run out of thread just after my Carer has left! However I still love to sew even if it's just putting the fabric through the machine. I just lose more ability as years go by so I try to use as much as I can and for as long as I can. It's a wonderful hobby. ;)

      Trousers hangers work well for this. You can also hang your hangers below each other by putting the ring tab from a side can and hanging each hanger over the coat-hanger hook, so then you use the whole drop of the wardrobe. Use a peg to hold the fabric onto the hangers so that the fabric doesn't slip off the hanger.

Additional notions I continually lose I put together as my...now where did I put that item. The lids keep the contents safe from spills and I store them with my sewing machines for easy access. No to the floor. Waste all your energy on the floor, use your cutting and pinning table upright! You spend more time cuttting and pinning than actually sewing! Also wear good shoes so you don't get tired. I use 6 foot folding tables than I pop up 2, side by side, and use bed risers $8 at walmart cuz I'm tall then fold away into the closet when not in use. Then no permanent table in the way. Good luck sew-ers! Also dollar tree has heavy duty clear zip folders I use for my patterns that I've cut and you can see the pattern front. Thanks Alyssa. Hang them on coat hangers ... use the ring tabs over the hook of each hanger and hang them vertically. You'll be able to store a lot that way, especially if you use a peg to hang several on each hanger, Or, you can buy large rings that open up for belts and scarves ... you'd fit a lot on those rings too.
