Great video and explanation. I had to de ice the INSIDE of my windscreen the other week. I should’ve suspected something wasn’t right. Then I noticed some mould on the foot mat and then a stale smell. Moved the mat and rear footwell is soaking!! Job for the weekend. Thanks mate. Saved me a headache

A useful video to show where the water comes into the car, thank you ... BUT....
Firstly, silicone won't last forever so a tougher sealant would be advisable. More importantly, you will need to tackle the root cause, as the area outside the yellow bung shouldn't fill with water in the first place. It is due to bad design, with leaves and other debris blocking the drainage holes below the area outside the bung. Front wheel needs to come off, as does the wheel arch liner and the cover plate that will in turn reveal the yellow bung. The whole area below the windscreen (on both sides of the car) needs a thorough clean, as do all the drainage channels. It's also a good idea to cut a groove on the inside of the black cover plate (the one between the wheel arch liner and the yellow bung) to give an extra area for water to escape. A check and clean every year or three, depending on how often you park under trees, would be a sensible precaution to try and avoid future problems. As you may guess, been there, done that, had the soggy carpet to prove it.
Incidentally, a local mechanic has also had a similar issue with Passats, as mentioned elsewhere.
Bad design by BMW - a fault that also occurred on some previous models, I believe, although the corporate line always seems to be "Never heard of it before". Yeah, right. That is contradicted by the chap in our local franchised parts department who when telling us that they had no stock of the yellow bung (Part #51 71 9 151 866, incidentally) said "We sell loads of them - we've got 20 on the way from Germany".

@@dustingreenhill9711 Well done Dustin. Don't forget to keep on top of it in years to come. How many owners of F10 and similar models have an impending problem they don't yet know about? And how many will struggle to find the cause, assuming it's associated with the rear door?

    • @Adamasher8888
      @Adamasher8888 4 года назад +1

buzzlightswitch I’ve got this exact problem now again it first happened a few years back and I used cheap Halfords silicon thinking it would do the trick. It has for a few years but it’s failed now due to not withstanding heat and cold temps of weather.
So I concur about the silicone quality and also will try the method of opening up extra channel for water.
Just to confirm if I open the wheel arch liner on a bmw 7 series f02 the plate is their? It’s been a few years since I had the mechanic do it and it was on the ramps. I will be trying to tackle this myself.
Any more pointers would be appreciated! 🙏🏽
      Thanks

Excellent video thanks for sharing! I have a 2011 F12 (640Ci) and discovered a lot of water in my rear passenger footwell so it's a common problem on 6 Series cars as well, not surprising as they are based on the 5 Series. I traced the problem to the same place, you can see water running in once you pull back the carpet.
If you notice condensation on the inside of all the windows this could be a cause, as was with my face for a few weeks before I discovered the source of the problem.
My previous car was a 645CI and I had similar problems with water channels in the convertible roof area getting blocked and water running into the interior of the car, luckily managed to sort it before the ECU's got wet..
I've had 9 BMW's and love them but so dissapointed at such bad design! You would think with the number of 5 and 6 Series and all their derivatives on the market BMW would admit the error and offer a solution!

Nice video, I did mine before it blocked up and caused a leak. I would recommend doing this from inside the engine. You can remove the engine cover and there is a panel on the top right hand side that is held on with a couple of screws. Behind this panel is the yellow blanking plate that is used to cover the hole.
Overall very bad design by BMW, the result of left hand side drive conversion to right hand drive.👎

The yellow cover has a double lip seal. Mine had small splits in the lip allowing water past into the cabin. Caught this reliatvely early when inside of windows started misting with damp, so not too much water in the footwell. To access the seal need to remove an insulation plate held by four torx screws. Beware, easy to drop them down to the engine cover below! Near the yellow cover there is a drain hole that channels water from the windscreen out via the wheel arch which will be full of crud so need cleaning out so water doesn't pool against the new seal. Would recommend buying a new cover from BMW for about £20. Old cover came out easily and could be done without lifting interior carpet but most times will need to lift and dry out the footwell carpet. Clean round aperture and pop in the new cover which has three clips with arrow facing down. Push gently on the three black lines on the yellow cover and should hear the tabs pop into place. Job done.

Same issue on my 5GT yesterday :( thank to all the people taking the time to post, as others have said you can access the blanking grommet from inside the engine compartment by removing 4 x 30 Torx screws from a small blanking panel. Chances are it will be full of debris and so water isn't draining through the channel properly, hence welling up and perishing the actual Yellow grommet seal. The grommet is part no51719151866 for a RHD vehicle and costs around £25. Bigger issue is drying out the back. I took a good 4-6 litres using a wet vac and the insulation will take for ever to dry out fully and is not possible to remove carpets without some serious work - seats out / trims removed fully. Any one with ideas on drying out the sound insulation / carpets quickly welcome.

Had a similar water intrusion with my 2004 645 Convertible. Leave out the plastic plug in the floor, so the water can drain, I left it out for 2-3 weeks, before fixing the trim back.
Also, if you all have a dehumidifier, let it run in your car for several hours daily, that will reduce the moisture in the car, and dry out the padding. Monitor the amount collected and you will know when to stop using it.
If you do not have a dehumidifier, try multiple containers of DampRid!
