0:38 How to use the CAGED system to play a SOLO: • How to use the CAGED s...
This video is a good starting point for people who want to understand how to solo all over the neck.
0:41 The Pentatonic Scale: • The Pentatonic Scale
This lesson talks a little about the G Shaped pentatonic scale but it also goes into depth on what a pentatonic scale is compared to a major scale. Useful for understanding why the major and minor pentatonic scale are basically the same thing. I’ll have to do a more in depth lesson on major and minor scales and why the pentatonic scales are so important for guitar players.
0:48 Music Theory for Guitar: Major Scales: • Music Theory for GUITA...
This helps you understand how major scales are made and how they map out to the guitar. Again, I’ll have to go more in depth in later videos about the relation between major, minor and all other scales, but hopefully this set of lessons will get you going on soloing and understanding guitar better.
Jam tracks used in this video:
10:09 B flat Minor Jam: • B Flat Minor Jam Track...
    12:42 E Minor Jam: • E Minor Jam Track i ...
12:59 THAT NOTE OUTSIDE THE SHAPE:
Yep. I played a note or two outside the shape. The pentatonic scales are like a scaffolding - a foundational structure to build more information into as needed. Eventually I’ll get into modes, full scales, harmonic and melodic minor scales that fit nicely around these basic shapes, but in the mean time you can do a LOT with just the pentatonic scales. I made a video about this situation called
How to Solo on Guitar part 2: Harmony • How to SOLO on GUITAR ...
But I need to dive way deeper into this subject in future videos. It all has to do with how the CAGED shapes interact with music theory and its a truly beautiful concept but it will take me a while to get that series going.
Guitar is such a cool complex instrument - the more you understand it, the more you understand music theory and the more you understand music theory the easier it is to understand the guitar. The CAGED system explains how the guitar is laid out. In my opinion, you can’t really avoid the CAGED system when you’re playing just about anything on the guitar and hopefully in future videos I can really drive a lot of concepts home. For this lesson, I thought I would keep it simple and just show how the Major and Minor pentatonic scales are really the same scale with different root notes.

Scott, I've been performing & writing as a solo artist for almost 30 years. I never stop learning and am always looking for new inspirations. You have definitely inspired me and opened my eyes to harmonies and grooves I can add to my music that will open more avenues of creativity. You are seriously a gem and have serious talent in expressing what you teach. That is a true quality. I can't wait to watch and save all your videos. I even got something from your Pentatonic video...& you're right, it was the first thing i learned. But, the ABAC and parts like writing a song has totally got me thinking about new ways to create! Thanks for again for the videos. You deserve much praise and $$. You are definitely one I will donate to.(And, I never have before). Keep them coming.

All of us who play guitars for a long, long time. Some thirty or forty years or more. Some more than half a century. When we start with the guitar we think and look at the guitar as an integral part of our bodies.the guitar becomes a part of our brain, when you start to convey emotions with your playing. And you think with the guitar, even then we all learn.

I can not get over how well produced and edited your videos are. The music and instruction is great, but the camera locked to the guitar neck so it's always in the same spot in frame, the ghosting of the fingers and the overlay of the notes/positions on the guitar is just astounding. Throw in the little backing audio nods when things are written or notes/scales are mentioned in order so you can hear what's being talked about is just an amazing subtle addition that brings this whole channel to another level.

But on the other hand... it's very, very, very easy and fast to learn, since it's only five shapes and five letters. ;) So no need to see the C, A, G, E and D within it. Thank you so much for all your effort on making amazing and informative videos! :)

    Time stamps:
    C: 0:55
    A: 4:04
    G: 5:29
    E: 6:23
    D: 7:40
Every major penta scale has it identical twin minor scale, for example, if you have a g-shaped C major penta scale then the other notes gonna be A minor. If you want to make the Major reference note Minor, bump it up 3 frets. For reference notes keep the colored notes in mind red and purple.

Thank you for your amazing videos. I've learned so much from your training. The split screen with graphical note dots totally helps. Please keep it up!

Thanks Scott. These videos are such a big help. You can watch 10 videos elsewhere but yours just sum it all up in a simple way. Really looking forward to seeing how you explain modes which are still baffling to me. Much love x

Scott you are the best teacher on RUclips. Can't thank you enough for what you teach in half an hour that we struggle to learn in years. Could you please make a tutorial on bendings, pull offs, hammer ons and all those stuff. Thanks..

Bro! took you 15 min to explain something that I haven’t been able to wrap my head around for 10 years 😂 you are the best. One thing is to know stuff and another completely different is being able to explain it, kudos to you

Already mentioned it twice, but I can't stop enjoying your lessons and pedagogy ... you have over 50k subscribers now, with not even 15 videos posted, that is phenomenal ... I am quite convince that if you carry on doing that exceptional work you do, you'll become the number one worldwide on line "star guitar (music ?) teacher" ... I am living in a place where I meet almost every day, pros and amateurs musicians. I am "selling" you each time I am meeting them, yesterday evening during diner was the last time I mentioned your name ... no I am wrong, I did it during lunch time today ... do not stop your lessons, we need you !

Man I never comment, but seriously the amount of effort and production value is off the charts. Can't imagine how much work this takes. still, all that is for nothing if the info is no good - but you nail that too. thank you

There are lots of other great guitar tutors on RUclips, including you. However what sets you apart is the layout and supporting graphic and angles. This must take loads of work, so thanks so much for sharing.

Scott, this is an amazing lesson!! I’ve been trying to understand how to apply the caged system for a long time. Finally, I can see how knowing the different shape patterns and knowing where the root and the minor note is located in each pattern gives you more options. It’s like instead of just knowing the main roads, you now know all the back alleys as well. Brilliant. I really like the way you explain the CAGED system. 👍👍👍😃

Your an awesome teacher Scott. One of the best on you tube. Showing all the keys and notes on the neck really helps in understanding how to play guitar. Keep up the good work. I'm a subscriber!
