  • Chrismas eve 2015,
On Facebook i found a community about "Lichtjes op oorlogsgraven", this means Lights on wargraves.I took some hours of from my work and left for a 40 minute drive to Holten with my wife Angelique. This unofficial ceremony was planned on 4:30PM and it would be a shame to be late. we arrived at 4:00PM and there allready were many people, some minutes before the ceremony the backpiper made a tribute to a fallen soldier. More and more people arrived at the cemetery, i think several thousands attended the ceremony. With the backpipers in front schoolchildren arrived at the cemetery, they placed the candles at all the graves. It was very exceeding, later that night i heard that candles were placed all over the Netherlands on about 140 locations.nadian War heroes.

Thank you to the Dutch people for your continuing remembrance and honouring of those of our boys who never came home again. My father was an RCAF officer who was in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during WWII. My father-in-law was in the Canadian Army and fought from Normandy, through Belgium and the dreadful Battle of the Scheldt to aid in the liberation of The Netherlands. He just celebrated his 100th birthday two months ago.
In 2004 we took him on a tour of The Netherlands, Belgium and France to see how peace had changed things. One of the stops we made was at Holten Canadian War Cemetery, to pay our respects. It is a place of tears and a lovely tribute, in a beautiful, peaceful location, to those who died for freedom. This celebration of lights is such a touching ceremony. The bonds between Canada and Holland will never be broken. We shall remember them. Lest we forget.

Back in the early 2000's I was at my families home in the dutch town of Wageningen where they used to keep military parades remembering the liberation of The Netherlands and we noticed an old man with a stroller accompanied by his son, after my uncle started a conversation with them we found out they were Canadians that had made the travel especially for this day. We told them they could watch the parade from the balcony on a chair for a better view and the old man was having slight trouble standing for too long, the old man started telling us stories and he was a member of the RCAF that operated during operation market garden. I was about 10 years old that day and even though I can barely remember the day itself nor his name I can recall the RCAF members face clearly untill this day and it made a great impact on me.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness. My father was a sniper in WW11 for the Canadian Armed Forces. He never talked about it, and had the scars from being shot on 2 separate occasions. The mental scars were much deeper. He was 16 years old when he enlisted...........

It's very good that the younger generation in NL learns about respect and honouring these fallen soldiers on Christmas Eve, it cannot be imagined. At 9:18 is no one alone (in Dutch) they ensure that everyone is together, everyone is equal, no one is alone at Christmastime.

An American WW2 veteran was visiting Holland with his son and grandson, ostensibly to show them the places where he had served during the war. His son -- to the father's embarrassment -- was bragging about how his dad had liberated Europe from Nazi tyranny; seemingly single-handed, one hand tied behind his back. The Dutch citizens listened politely until one man finally spoke up, "Do you know who our Liberators were?" He pointed to a cemetery full of Canadian graves, "They are buried over there!... "

It is unfortunate that many Americans are basically taught in school now that they singlehandedly liberated the world in both the world wars. They were Johnny come latelys to both. Yes, they fought hard but many nations lost more people in the struggle of ww2 than they did. I can imagine that old vet was embarrassed, him remembering the men from many nations that fell. Yes, the Americans also fought to liberate the Netherlands, but it was the Canadians who did the lions share, and the Canadians who the Dutch hold dear. I was born in the Netherlands and moved to Canada with my parents in '76 so i have basically learned the view from both countries perspective.
