    I own a w123 and a Range Rover Classic but I live in California. Watching your videos I realize how lucky I am my government uses pumice and lava rock on the road instead of salt. I had a 280E and can confirm that it's not a pleasant-sounding engine. Very thirsty to boot. And with the really antiquated steering (giant wheel, ball-and-worm), that means I don't miss it at all. To each his own!

    Well...
    As always ... very nice indeed sir..💪
    Little story on the side...
    I was in Rome, Italy 🇮🇹 about ten years ago and one of those cars, a W 123 was fitted as a taxi 🚖
    The driver was a small guy with wireframe Glasses and a bow tie ...and he said with a very THICK Italian accent...
    Quote: „best car in the world...500.000 Kilometers ...first Engine, First transmission...zero problema..“! End quote...
    He was polishing the car constantly with a cloth and the car looked, like it just left the assembly line...💪
    Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪/Europe 🇪🇺

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  4 года назад

      Love it Erhardt! There were hundreds of them as taxis in Athens until not so long ago too. And most of those at 500k miles minimum. Such amazing cars for their over engineering.

    When it comes to cleaning smaller bits of car, I found a sand blast cabinet really useful. I had an old Guyson commercial nozzle, and a compressor, but cabinets are expensive. Then I noticed a fly tipped fridge, two timber feet screwed to the top and bottom, holes cut in the door for gloves and a window held in with gaffer tape, a vacuum cleaner for dust extract and I have a great resource for free.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  4 года назад

      I really want to build one, and Andy [media blaster ep. 49] said he had some spare parts that would work... so hopefully it's on the cards. Thanks John and cool work with the fridge 😎

    I recently moved from London to Kilkenny and was well aware of the road tax situation here! It's a bit of a shocker when I tell people back in London. We had been planning this move for over six years and about 18 months ago, after a LOT of searching, I found a reasonable 1989 Range Rover. The wife, who is usually fairly accurate with judging the dogs of cars and motorbikes I've usually bought home, took quite some convincing that a 30yo Land Rover was a good proposition. Cosmetically it shows its age but mechanically it's pretty good , just an issue or two to deal with. The ironic thing is, now we're here, the virus has shut everything down!
    Also ironic is that if it wasn't for the very high road taxes, with roads like ours, I'm sure many more people would be driving RRC's!
    I can't wait to watch more of this restoration, I'm not a massive German car fan but I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the W123's, they're pretty iconic for a Mercedes Benz!
    Good luck!

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  4 года назад +1

      Yep, 4x4's have always been popular here because of the roads. Still a lot of Discovery's knocking about. The last work on the W123 is coming soon but in case you missed them, there are more episodes after this one. Thanks for watching :)

    Ohh, beautiful car, I'm very happy that you're putting it back on the road, where it belongs. I've had a W124 260E (2.6L straight six), it's an incredibly smooth engine with absolutely the smoothest suspension ever. Sure, it rocks like an old barge in turns at high speeds, but at slower (city driving) speeds it's like floating on a cloud. Driving over a curb doesn't feel like a bump, it feels like you just softly float up and then float down. It's literally magic, all my passengers were constantly amazed by it.

    W123s are amazing things to cruise in, I've had 2, a 200T and a 230E. Lowered the 230 by quite a margin and debuted it at the first Retro Rides Gathering at Mallory Park. Spent the weekend parked next to my mates slammed W115. Even got a picture in the show report of PPC.
    As usual, looking forward to what you're gonna do with it. 😃

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  4 года назад

      I have a little hankering for getting this one a little lower, but worried about losing that supple ride. Any thoughts? It's already on the thinnest spring rubbers, and I'd only want 30/40mm drop, so it sits nice rather than slammed. Congrats on the show report 🤘🏼

    • @tonycocacola5555
      @tonycocacola5555 4 года назад

      It didn't seem to affect the ride, it was still wafty wafty motoring. Speed bumps, on the other hand, were a nightmare. Not sure if you're aware, but normal spring compressors don't work on the front. You'll have to make your own. Two bits of 1/4 inch thick metal plate, a length of threaded bar and some nuts and washers are what I used. 😃

    A perfect start to a weekend. Soup does a W123. I love these cars, possibly the most Mercedesish (!) of all. I had a 280E and did the normal stupid thing. I sold it. It needed more work than I had the ability to carry out. Damn, I have regretted it's departure greatly. So, no pressure then George. Just my favourite car on my favourite channel, looking forward to the next episode tomorrow. What? This isn't a daily series? Really? Oh! 😀
