Buy yourself a rice cooker! You don't have to get an expensive zoujirushi machine. The $30 Aroma rice cooker does a good job with basic sushi rice. I've used mine at least twice per week for years and it's still going strong.

Being Chicano American (Mexican) I too as a kid was on rice duty... Rice is everywhere in Mexico as in savory dishes as well as sweets, desserts, cakes, puddings, tamales, atoles, and horchata. Not to be mistaken for 'Spanish Rice' as that is the Americanized version with beans, not traditional in Mexico, we always and still do cook rice on the stove top.. in Mexico long grain rice is used but some opt for medium grain. We first bring the water to the boil, add the rice and turn down to a slow simmer, cover, and DO NOT TOUCH for 15 minutes, voila it's done. fluff with a wooden fork... Never used a rice cooker before, want to try, may opt for the one you're using, I'll tell them you sent me lol. The Japanese are so inventive, a toy, with practical uses and is so cute... the smile on your face throughout this video says it all!
I never fail to take away something so positive from your videos. I love how at 3:12 in a sentence where you could have described your child as impatient you instead said that he was "very interested in time". The way we word and frame things is really so powerful. It not only helps to be a more positive and forgiving person but I can only imagine how the way you speak about/to your children has supported their self-esteem and self-love.
I believe what you say about rice! I was visiting a family in Arkansas on the Mississippi delta and I was invited to harvest rice on a combine. It was an amazing and memorable experience. Did it in 1983.

I like that you also use the increments on the pot. As a kid, we were always taught to use the lines on our fingers to measure the water. But I always had mixed results (too dry/too watery) then I start using the increments and it's easier, you don't have to worry if the rice is not leveled evenly when measuring for water :D
Love the spotlight on domestic rice farmers! I’ve lived most of my life in MS, and recently moved back from AR, both huge producers of rice, but most people don’t know how much we produce here in the US! And rice is a wonderful crop for utilizing over farmed soils and giving them new life!

Internal battery is shot so it won't keep time if it's not plugged in, but that doesn't affect its functionality at all. I love it so much that my friends all get one for their wedding gift, and they end up falling in love, too. C:

We love our zojiroshi rice cooker. We have an older model, but we'll never go back to other brands. I love that this will hold the rice perfectly for hours. We will make curry early on the weekend and enjoy it all day long. Never burnt rice (cheap cookers are not good). Not the cheapest, but not too expensive and the quality is wonderful. I think when this one needs replacing, we'll upgrade to the one you have.
I only wish she had done one sushi with like tuna salad, or spam, or egg, or fresh veggies. B/c these look cute but...the ingredients weren't appetizing.

I tried making sushi for the first time and it took me 2 hours as I got ambitious and decided to make 4 different toppings and a onigiri. My dad ‘ordered’ it as his lunchbox the next day and my answer was: NEVER.

I also thought it was 6-7 minutes. But it's 67 minutes. Not 6-7. I'm not sure why it takes this machine so long to cook it, but the screen said 67 minutes.
Actually 67 minutes would be a proper amount of time to cook normal, non-parboiled rice. Seven minutes only works for instant rice. Raw rice cooked for just 7 minutes would be pretty crunchy for sure.
I think it must be 67 mins because she said her old one only beeped once there was 15 minutes of a countdown left so she must be used to cooking rice for 15+ mins

We also have several of the Zojirushi carafes; they are amazing. They keep hot liquids hot for 12 hours easily, and warm well into 24 hours. They’ve been a fantastic addition to our kitchen, and have helped minimize coffee and tea waste.
