Best video I've seen on these bikes. It's especially nice that you give explanations like why it is called "locked on" grip, etc, to the people that are new to mountain biking like me. Subbed, keep up the good work!
Just bought one, I like the single gear upfront.I went for a red merging into black as my colour. Brakes are very good. In XL its quite heavy to lift onto the roof carrier of my car!
Get the 6, save the money for a Manitou marcor fork asap and get Deore 2 pot brakes down the line when you're ready, but by which time you will probably want to get a full sus anyway. The only real difference between the two models is a bottom of the barrel RS Judy fork on the M7 which has zero damping and equally as bad as the one on the M6.
Just upgraded my Marlin 4 to a Marlin 6, same color but M/L frame. The difference in the drivetrain and brakes is incredible. Honestly the best bang for buck Marlin with the 1x drivetrain. I am going to add an external dropper to mine, using the spare holes in the downtube for a partial internal routing. Very capable bike, tons of torque in low gear and decent top speed for road use.
Think medium would be a decent fit for 5'8" 1/2?! On their site my height is the high end of medium, and low end of M/L.. Have the opportunity to purchase a used medium. Thanks
For an urban commute to work and back, how would the Marlin 6 (1 x 10) differ to the Marlin 5 (2 x 8) drivetrain ? Is the 6 a capable bike on the open road too ?
I hated the grips, if you have large hands the lock part will rub them raw. PNW grips was a big change for little money. I probably should have gotten a more trail-focused bike but this is the most I have ever spent on a bike and so far it's pretty dang good.
Great review. I bought my first Trek Marlin 5 back in 2015 so Im now looking to upgrade and by your awesome review I've found my new bike. Just hope they arrive in time
Sold my Trek Crossrip Ltd last month. Hoping to change to the Marlin 6 since spent most of the Crossrip life off road anyway. Should have made the switch sooner. Love the single drivetrain
got a marlin 7 xxl frame raised the bars a bit with the extra spacer included feels vvv comfortable with it raises and some new maxis smart sam tan walls its to good
I just got the black and yellow color scheme today. It won't be available until November because of supply issues though i guess. Seems like a good price for the parts you get.
Just traded in my trek road bike that i dont use as much for this 2022 Marlin 6(same color) and i am excited to get it next feb. This is my first entry level mountain bike and I was deciding between the 5 & 6. What sold me is the single chain derailleur in front verses 2 in the Marlin 5. I love how i can use one had to go up and down the gears. Don't even have to think about it. Its very intuitive.
My 2021 Marlin 6 also comes with Maxxis Ikon tires. It also comes with Shimano MT200 brake. My wife’s Marlin 6 women’s comes with XR2 tires and Shimano MT200 brake.
I don’t know how many people say this: I like bikes with bright colors. Some bikes are only available with black, gray, etcetera. Very dull. I wish it had dropper post cable routing. 🤔
I was lucky enough to get my hands on Marlin 6 2022 model at local bike shop just a week ago at $999.99 Canadian $. Navy blue. Other than the fork I think it is exactly the same as Marlin 7, 2021, just different color lineup. Coming from Marlin 5 and 3x7 I was excited to go to the “new modern” 1x . At first I felt limited and not too impressed ( riding mostly on the road ) but after a few long rides I am starting to like it. I added whole bunch of extras to it like fenders, kickstand and computer bike and I love my new city/ trails bike. The only con for me is cheap pedals and seat that’s not too comfortable. I know, it is easily replaced but it costs some $ to do that. I watch both of your channels buys, like them lots. Cheers!
I was under the impression that it came with tubeless ready rims (but not tires)..and I see from the specs online that it is not, you'd have to go up to a Marlin 8 to get tubeless and it comes with tubeless tires.
Im looking at a used Marlin 6 Gen 2 medium. I'm about 173cm which is the high end of medium, and low end of M/L. Would you recommend the medium, or waiting for a M/L?

Thank you for the great review. Looks like this one weighs in around 0.6 or 0.7 of a pound less than your weigh-in of last year's model. That weight difference coming from the 1x drivetrain?

Nice and efficient presentation. I think I'm gonna stick with my 5 but I'm thinking about adding the Maxxis tires. Do you recommend the change and why?

I ride btwin Triban 540 (Tiagra) road bike and looking to add a MTB for more versatility and comfort. I love this one! especially that gearset! is deore equivalent or better than Tiagra ?
Just bought one. Very nice. It is geared a little low for my taste. Not a lot of hills in florida. Not going to set any speed records on a straight flat road. Kinda want a little bigger chainring in the front. Not sure if one will fit. Pretty sure i could climb super crazy hills like crazy stupid hills with stock gearing.
Those are different grips than the spec sheet. My 2022 Marlin 5 came with those as well. Contacted Trek to see what they were and they had no idea. They aren't bad though, actually glad mine came with those vs the spec'd ones.
Rode a Giant TCR 105 road bike for a few years, took a break and now I want to ride a hardtail, stopped my search on a Marlin 6 specifically; first 5 because of that lime green colour, but going for a 6 because of Deore and 1x drivetrain... How important is it to have a dropper post? To me, it seems like a must if you want to ride anywhere offroad, but I might be wrong. I also saw some options on amazon with a handle underneath the saddles, but it seems this option isn't widely offered, which leads me to think it's not exactly a worthwhile solution? cheers
Doing the same. Got the M5 a month ago and did not like the 2x front just ordered the M6 should be ready by the end of this week. How's the M6 compare to the M5?
The Marlin 6 has the same brakes as the shimano MT 200 if I understood it correctly. I'm 250 pounds and it can slam me to a stop without shredding up my tires. It's amazing.
I recently moved to Colorado and want to get a Mt bike. Would something like this be sufficient, or should I go for something pricier like the Specialized Rockhopper Elite 29? Some of the trails are quite rocky and I can see the bike getting quite a bit of abuse
@@Jamesthebikeguy front derailleur needs one port, there’s two? Maybe there’s no passage above the bottom bracket? Seems silly. 🤷♂️ But then there’s those water bottle mounts on the seat tube…
Loving this bike so far, another ? - it came set up with 2 spacers below the handlebar clamp and one above (then the stem cap) is it easy enough and safe to put the top spacer on the bottom to gain a little bar height? Hope I asked that correctly, so then it would be 3 spacers on the bottom, the handlebar clamp and the stem cap only on top.
I’ve got the same grips on handlebar of my marlin 5, however these are no-name grips, and not bontrager xr endurance comp. I feel like being cheated by TREK.

If you plan on doing more commuting I’d go with the 6.
Wow, great video! You just sold me on the Marlin 6 on this color instead of the Marlin 5. Thank you!

For an urban commute to work and back, how would the Marlin 6 (1 x 10) differ to the Marlin 5 (2 x 8) drivetrain ? Is the 6 a capable bike on the open road too ?
