    You described it all so well Pearly. I feel like the rigidity of Japanese culture and society and worry about “sticking out” too much as a foreigner with our foreign individualities ultimately restricts us into behaving more like them, instead of truly ourselves.
    I still feel so much fondness for Japan and miss living there so much sometimes - I just wish it wasn’t so difficult to do. Thank you for sharing your story! ❤

    People in the video are so friendly haha. There are many good things in Japan I guess.
    Pearly is very honest. Feeling the pressure from society to fit can be really overwhelming and sometimes very harmful.

    To be honest, I feel the same way but about Canada. I don't think individualism makes you feel less rejected, it's just different. I live in a big canadian city and everyone has the exact same opinion on life and not thinking like them will ostracize you in the minute. I have completely given up on expressing my own reflections here to maintain friendships and jobs. It has worked well but I feel completely alienated. Also I really like to dress nice and to eat healthy or stuff like that, in Canada, where drugs and malnutrition are a really big thing, and where no one does more effort than to wear shorts, hiking sneakers and bland t-shirts, you're almost a threat or a superficial person to them if you care about your health and you get looked at lot in the streets for dressing up. When I was in Japan people would barely glance despite my foreigner face since it's so common to see people dressing differently.

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts here! Sorry to hear that, and I can imagine how difficult it is :( Yes, I agree with you, I think sometimes it's less about individualism or collectivism but more about we are "sticking out" in an environment/society if our thoughts/preferences/values etc are different from others. And as a human being (social animal), sometimes it's just tough not to care about what others think of us or not to be affected by our surroundings. But for me, it's always going to be a work-in-progress in terms of making peace with myself, to find a comfortable sweet spot, whether it's leaning more toward sticking out or conforming to the surroundings/rules/values. I hope you could also find a way that works out comfortable for you :) I'll root for you^^

    Hi :) I have moved to Japan 4 months ago and I really like everything you mentioned except summer (now its getting really hot here and I know in following months its only going to get worse) and working culture which I didn't yet experience myself but I am getting little scared if I didn't make a mistake to move here from Europe where the protection of employee is very strong and its just ok to go on vocation for 3 weeks with about 30 paid days off. Do you have any experience with the working culture?
    Btw. Its so cool to see you recorded the video close to 清水五条 which is like 100 meters from my house. :D

    • @pearlywong
      @pearlywong  6 дней назад

      Thank you for your comment^^I don't have experience working in Japan but I did some internships back then when I was a student and quite many of my friends are currently working in Tokyo. I would say, in terms of paid vacation, European countries are definitely more generous in this aspect. Working culture in Japan varies from company to company, if it's a foreign company branch, then there's a higher chance that the working culture is similar to the western countries. But based on my observation, I think in general, Japanese working culture still emphasize more on "work, work, work", less about work life balance. Well that being said, I don't think you need to worry too much about it yet as I think you are still pretty new to Japan, and tbh different kinds of working culture have its own pros & cons, it all comes down to whether it's acceptable to you :) so I would suggest to take some time to find out what works for you and what don't, whether it's by experiencing the working culture there yourself or by asking around for different opinions :) I'll root for you here in Taiwan haha! 頑張ってね〜
      btw, that's so freaking cool that my filming spot is so near your house!! what a crazy coincidence, the world is small~

    I was blindly running in the dark down the 鴨川 during my week long trip to Kyoto a couple weeks ago.
    I enjoyed my trip but I couldn’t help wondering how much money Japan spent maintaining all these clean modern public toilets. That can’t be cheap.

    • @pearlywong
      @pearlywong  11 дней назад +1

      haha true but I think toilets are clean there not only because how well they clean them but also because users generally take good care of them too!
