Well.... as is finally concluded towards the end of the review, this is a budget alternative! The whole European market is moving towards premium OR budget at the cost of "middle of the road". And in this ever more polarized market Fiat has wisely realized, that the Tipo is never going to be able to compete with class leaders like the Golf. So instead they positioned the Tipo to compete with Dacia, while they leave it to Alfa Romeo to take on Audi, BMW and Mercedes.
Do I think, its perfect? No. I wish Fiat would develop some new engines not just only for the Tipo but for their entire model lineup. And I wish they would make better steering and a better gearbox, since these things cant cost that much to engineer. But the rest of the package is actually fine. Not everyone need or want to pay for soft touch plastics or the latest electronic gimmicks.

Very true. It was just such a shame - it looks so nice on the outside, the interior was just a massive disappointment. Steering and gearbox, also disappointing. For some, as a vehicle and nothing else, it'll be absolutely fine, but is it a car to get excited about? Unfortunately not.

Excellent review, and spot on. I have an ancient Fiat, and it's been very reliable, but the quality is ..... quesionable. Pity really, because the new Tipo could be a very different proposition if they'd used better materials and tuned it a bit differently.

Agreed! It's a real shame. If they'd just added some of the 500's character... SW

Fiat already has a “premium” contender in this class - the 500X. The Tipo is meant as a cheap everyman car. Have a look at the prices of them nearly new in Car Supermarkets. I’m seriously tempted at one as a work/runaround car to keep the mileage off my main car.

Great Video Review. It would have been better If Fiat had used some soft touch materials and a larger Infotainment system

Why not better plastic and interior quality in general? Look at stilo. It was a good quality car, well equipped and... expensive. People didn't buy it. Tipo is much cheaper and that's why it is successfully sold in many countries.

Agree. Generally UK market car interiors are dark grey, black and charcoal, and materials are bloody awful, and I don't know why.
Compare UK market i20 with Indian market i20 and the interiors are quite different. Indians get a better car!
    WHY??!!
It really wouldn't add much cost at all in a volume product.

shouldnt be reviewing diesels anymore. they are going out, polutants, being banned from towns. should be reviewing the 1.4 petrol turbo until an electric comes along

Had a tipo 1.6 diesel estate 2 months now and love it,drives well looks great it is euro6 with NO car tax and at under 10000 grand for a 18 month old car with under 11000 miles F.S.H. an absolute bargain.P.S. does genuine 60mpg.

I normally drive a diesel car.
I love the economy (60 mpg) combined with low co2 emmisions. (Band1)
      I hired a 1.4 Tipo.
Bloody gutless, constantly shifting down, engine noisy, and thirsty for petrol, pumping plenty of hydrocarbons and co2. Into the air.
Give me a clean diesel anyday.
