Benjamin Warshavsky actually they pretty much set the stage for the formula of modern adventure movies, so it technically is original, being one of the very first (I knew this comment is two years old I just wanted to share a fact I learned in film)
@@brookechansler4147 Except it isn't. it's pretty much Akira Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress note for note. It was never original, that's not a problem, but it was never really all that original.
"The magic doesn't lie in the details, but in how many different ways it can speak to you." This. This is why I loved The Last Jedi. I can overlook the odd nonsensical or unneeded details because the stuff that's amazing is REALLY amazing.
Maybe the original footage was just really hard to find? I wouldn't know, as I'm one of those weird, freaky anomalies who has never seen the Star Wars films (I know, I know, don't crucify me yet!), but I've heard from other movie geeks that the originals are nearly impossible to find anymore.
+Wawagirl17 That's not true at all. You can find them on VHS (every release before 1997) and the original versions were also released in two disc sets that included the 2004 DVD version and the original theatrical version. There is also a pretty popular fan project called "Despecialized Edition". Fans basically restored the original versions in HD.
Ahh, okay then. There's so many details about this stuff that I haven't a clue about. I just remember a podcaster I love wanted to show it to his wife for the very first time and was really desperate to show her the VERY original, no edits, and had to jump through a million hoops to eventually get his hands on it. But he could have been very misinformed, too. Or I could've heard wrong. What do I know? lol
I completely agree, some people just think that these first three movies are absolute perfection, when truth be told a lot of the problems that exist in the prequels also exist in these movies. The key difference being that here you care enough about the characters and the story and the world not to notice those things (as much), whereas the prequels tend to be dull and lifeless and occasionally flashy mindless action, with not as much to mask those shortcomings.
+100percentgamer Honestly I like the prequels and I believe they got alot of unwarranted hate because angry old man children are mad at George for not making his movies the way they wanted them. Star Wars fans have unrealistically high expectations to begin with. and if they hold those high expectations, they're going to be disappointed every time. I'm betting the general consensus for The Force Awakens will start off with massive fanfare, then it will eventually dwindle down to "It's okay" like every other Star Wars movie, or people are going to hate it like the Phantom Menace because Abrams didn't make it the way the angry old man children wanted it. Personally, I'm happy we're getting a whole new generation of Star Wars fans, who are going to experience Star Wars in theatres for the first time like we did. I was part of the prequel generation and saw the prequels in theatres. Still, whether you hate the prequels or not I hope we can atleast all enjoy them together as Star Wars fans.
+MountainFox51 (Clap Clap Clap) Very well spoken, sir. Even I got introduced to Star Wars by VHS Box Set that my parents got; but I manage to see the special editions in theaters then the prequels came along and watched all of them in theaters. So yeah, as a kid I grew up with the first four Star Wars movies that includes the phantom menace. But didn't grew up the Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith came out when I was in High School. I'm okay with the two of the prequels (not really on episode II) and I'm all over with the original trilogy.
+100percentgamer For me they were perfect for their time, I will always love them... They were something very special to me when I was young - but even I can see the bad dialogue, disjointed plot points etc... now that I am older. Hell, despite my love of the Trilogy - I was planning on doing a Cinema Sins style video of Everything Wrong With... Doing the while Trilogy - Sadly I took too long and CS have beat me to it... But I think they missed a fair few... I was even going to include "FanBoy Sins" and "Critic Sins" as well... As it gets ridiculous hearing the Critics who HATE the films moaning about the Death Star Exhaust port - And having to add a Fanboy sin there too as, well as a fanboy, I came up with a totally feasible explanation as to why it WAS NEVER A PLOT HOLE! Even the Dorkly Channel has that covered too.. and many points I never thought of... LOL! And I have to agree about the prequels, though I did enjoy them - everything you listed is why they failed... Hence I loved Nostalgia Critics view of the 11 Things the Prequels did RIGHT.
+John Doe Uncle Owen actually refers to him as "that old wizard". Either the moisture farmer is very astute, or Kenobi's bad at posing as an unimportant old man.
+Tibor Csendes ...not really? You don't really have a choice in what the first movie is shown to you. You're very young and most likely have it chosen out by your parents. If this person said "This is the best movie I've ever seen" or "This is the only movie I've ever seen" then yeah it would be sad.
+Commander_Ninja I cant argue with that :) I think it is sad because he or she was to young to watch those movies detachedly. I saw them when i was 14, and i am really thankful for that, because sw is not that good, and i can see that without all the childish nostalgia or overhype try to hide it from me (sorry for bad english i am a can of tuna :p )
It's actually not just James Earl Jones's voice that sells Darth Vader (although it sure as hell does help a lot). If you mute the scenes Vader is in, you actually notice that the actor in the suit (David Prowse, I think his name is), gives a lot of really subtle and interesting touches to Vader's physical performance.
In particular I like what Bill Moyers said about this movie in Empire of Dreams (watch this doc if you haven't), which essentially was that it was the right movie for the right time. "Timing is everything in art. You bring out Star Wars too early and it's Buck Rodgers. You bring it out too late and it doesn't fit our imagination. You bring it out just as a the war in Vietnam is ending when America feels uncertain of itself, when the old stories have died. And you bring it out at that time, and suddenly it's a new game. Also, it's a lot of fun. It's a lot of fun to watch Star Wars."
Star Wars is just a part of our culture today, Which is why I get upset at people who refuse to watch it. It doesn't even matter if you somehow manage to hate it, everyone knows the symbols, sayings, and characters so well it seems like something we all should just know
+cafeterialoca Yeah, Tarkin was clearly the man in charge. People usually forget that in Episode IV Vader was basically the Muscle, the powerful guy who does the fighting and gets in direct conflitct with the heroes while Tarkin is the one leading the villains and giving orders to the Imperial Forces and to Vader himself. It's in episode V we first see Vader in a leading position, arguably because Tarkin and other high ranked officers were killed at the Death Star.
Tarkin has a title which he earned. He's a governor. The regional governors keep their systems in line and Vader makes sure they maintain the Emperor's interests. People tend to forget that Palpatine and Vader are ruling the galaxy through suppression of the fact that they are Sith Lords. Most of the people who discovered that they are Sith Lords are Jedi, and they're all either dead or in exile. So Vader certainly isn't going to broadcast his official title as "Sith Lord" to the Galaxy. To almost every galactic citizen, Palpatine is just the Emperor... A politician who has been in power since he ended the clone wars. People tolerate him because he ended a decades long galactic war. To people in the know, like Princess Leah, Darth Vader has more authority and power than he lets on. Publicly Vader toes the line when around Politicians, to support the illusion that they are in control. In reality, they're not.
+Byron MacGreggor I'm not sure where I read it or of it could be considered true anymore, but I was always of the impression that Vader and Tarkin were friends. Vader is technically higher ranked as he is the personal representative of the Emperor, but in this movie it's Tarkin's show. It's Tarkin's Death Star (which was a proof of concept, the 2nd was the Emperor's and was much bigger) and Tarkin's plan during the final battle. Vader didn't assume direct command at any point because he trusted Tarkin.
+cafeterialoca yes it seams that way but if you read the expanded material you find out Vader was the supreme commander of the entire imperial military and above Tarkin, he was on the death star as an observer the eyes and ears of the emperor and instructed by the emperor to let Tarkin run the show.
This is my favourite one out of all the movies cause I watched this one like crazy as a kid and didn't have access to the other two a little bit afterwards. Will always love this movie
"got into it via the ewoks cartoons" That's almost like me first getting into it through Spaceballs. I laughed my ass of at that comedy, but then wanted to see what they were making fun of, so I borrowed some VHS tapes of the original SW trilogy from my local library (do libraries still offer movies, BTW?)
+Morgil Yes libraries do offer movies and TV shows on DVD and Blu-ray (heck, when I was growing up, I never needed to visit blockbuster because my library had an extensive VHS collection).
hey i got into it because i saw a book with pictures at my school of a new hope, and then was randomly going through recorded vhs tapes and one of them opended up with the first thing you see being c3p0 going into jabas place in return of the jedi and i reconinsed him from the pictures i saw in the star wars book from school and then i gradually wanted to see more so yeah whats interesting is the fact that i was never able to fully grasp the twist or appericate the twist that darth vader was lukes father as the first movie i saw turned out to be return of the jedi
Yeah, and really, with a movie this old that's been talked about SO MUCH for nearly 40 years, I don't think he would've had much else to say to fill up a full-length review. This was enough.
I've only recently started get a greater interest in Star Wars, to a point where I regret missing out on the Clone Wars animated series (the CG one). When I was in high school, I thought it was ok, not because its what I truly thought about the films, but growing up in an urban area in Trenton left me fearing about liking nerdy things. Because of this, I tended to keep it to myself and tried to convince myself that I didn't really like Star Wars all that much. But once I graduated and met true friends in and out of high school, that fear started to dissipate and I started to truly appreciate geek culture for what it is. Just recently I started rewatching entire franchise (yes even the prequels, albeit in the Machete order 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, and 6). Its been a while since I've seen A New Hope, and once I saw it again, my feelings are similar to Doug's. The acting and dialogue isn't really THAT spectacular, a few plot threads were weird, and some things didn't age well. But I loved it because the characters and the lore, the atmosphere and most of the action are great, fantastic even.
I remember when I was little, dad brought a gift to me and mom. He lived separately at the time. I've heard of Star Wars here and there, but kinda like you hear of Dracula musical. You know it exists somewhere on Earth, but nobody around you really gets into it, let alone seen it. We live in post-communistic country, so these movies did not get here until much later. Anyway, dad brought a box that contained 3 VHS tapes with really nice golden and fancy cover. It was Star Wars, the original package, including scenes from making the movies. I was thrilled, imagine THIS being your introduction into the franchise. We immediatelly put it in the VHS player and watched all 3 movies. It was especially dear to me, because it was one of the few moments we actually spent togehter as a family. So... no matter what excuses for Star Wars they make nowadays, the original trillogy does and will hold a special place for me.
I love the Star Wars franchise, I can't stand the obnoxious fanboys who herald the Original as infallible because of their nostalgia goggles. I grew up with the prequel trilogy movies coming out, I liked them as much as I do the Originals, and I recognise the flaws and the brilliance in both, and I can't wait to see what this new Trilogy will bring.
I grew up when the prequels were coming out, but was too young to see any of them in theaters. While I agree the Original Trilogy is better, I enjoy he prequels as well. I do think many of the complaints made about them are valid, but enjoy them anyway.
+Sean “TheExtraGuy” Hixon Eh hush it with the Nostalgia goggles. Whether you wanna admit it or not, most prequel fans wear even bigger goggles than the OT fan boys. No one is blind to the flaws of the original trilogy, I sure ain't. But if you don't like someone's opinion than don't come up with some hypocritical reasoning.

Ray Muniz It's not the opinion I don't like. You can hate the movies, that's your choice, what I don't like is this superiority these types of fans love to project over anyone who likes anything from the prequels. Basically throwing the baby out with the bath water!
Star Wars is one of those films I never saw but I see everywhere for as long as I can remember. To being parodied in TV or movies, references to merchandise, I've seen it all.
My mother saw this movie when she was pregnant with my brother. She saw it in a drive-in (which she wasn't fond of, but my father was), so she was unable to enjoy as it should have been enjoyed. But, her sister-in-law encouraged her to watch it again, properly, and she found she really did like it. But, she find Empire Strikes Back her absolute favorite. Mainly because of the sass and chemistry between Han and Leia. Once she got a VCR and all of the movies, she watched them all the time. I was bornin 1980, so was right in the middle of it. I was literally raised with the movies and practically knew them by heart early on. You got introduced to them because of the Ewoks cartoons (which was why Lucas created them - to bring in a larger audience). I was introduced to them by an obsessed fan within my own household. But, of course she was an obsessed fan. Watching movies and reading books is a lot of fun when you are a divorcée single mother raising two children. In other words, I wasn't given a choice. It was enjoy the movies or get bored and go play in my room. But, it was my mother's reading the books to the movies - and knowing more about the movies because of it, that got me into reading. Reading in general and reading for the full experience of a movie or show (especially for those that are not included in the cinematic feature).
I accidentally found Star Wars when i was 6 or 7. My 16 year old cousin had the VHS set at my grandparents and i came across them, thought the box art, specifically Vader, looked cool and asked if we could watch one. Got hooked ever since.
+Ikrani Actually with the prequels existing even more things don't make sense, without them we would still have fun and interesting questions and discussions.
+ben krug They happened, they are here to stay, they are part of the Star Wars canon and are just as important as the originals. A lot of people like them, a lot of people with continue to mention and reference them. Deal with it.
Doug, I've been followed this channel for a few months now. And I just love it. I do cardistry , which is an artform very different from movies, but the approach you have I try to replicate in order to get inspiration and improve myself . Your videos have helped me to see beyond some things, beyond obvious and I thank you for that. Also it gives me a lot of laughs :) Thanks to Doug and all people who are part of this CHANNEL AWESOME. Saludos desde Chile
+Kyle Shea Doubt that, its not Disney related, heck I don't think its even Fox related, Cartoon Network did it, and I think at one point Netflix was in control
Yeah James Earl Jones is the voice of Darth Vader but you forget to credit David prowse, he is the body actor that gave Earl's voice such a stature and he is British so star wars has great British actors.
I watched all the movies, and I went in knowing there is a hype around it, but not being hyped to see it myself. I was not blown away by it. I just didn't find it appealing. I'm somewhere between bored and annoyed, coming very close to, but not fully setting foot in the dislike territory. I'll pass the new one, and any other sequels they decide to do.
+alguemalguem I feel the same. I agree with the fandom on the other six films, but I saw all of them for the first time as an adult, and Episode IV was so corny and dull. The entire middle act especially with all its plot holes and contrivances, makes me rage.
Well Doug, I'm glad that you just shared your opinion of how you like this movie and I can agree that there few flaws and we can nitpick anything that we like to make fun of "Star Wars," but it's actually a classic science fantasy and we do remember that we always love how original does this movie work, as well as George Lucas, has made his original story. The first movie is very groundbreaking, and I always love this movie from beginning to the end. I love the first story where Luke and his friends came here to rescue the princess from the Empire's Death Star and take down the system that will stop preventing the Rebellion war. I actually love the characters including good actors who portrayed do well at the time, the creativity between space and planet sequences were marvelous, and the dialogue was fantastic with knowing who they are and identify with them. You all know your love or like this movie, but just sit down and relax. Enjoy "Star Wars" for our generations.
May the force be with us all, always. Also, let Han Solo shot first and nobody cares of what Lucas had edited out. Enjoy your masterpiece Jorge and please eat your good diet pizza roll.
+The Cartoonsiastic she's never seen the prequels. A New Hope is the first one she's seen and she hated it. For her sake, she better like Empire Strikes Back
+Retro Redemption anything that has Eddie Redmayne in it. But she loves Doctor Who and Supernatural. We just finished watching Empire strikes back and her only response to that movie is that it's better than A New Hope.
The movies are pretty dated in a lot of ways. Between the sets, the budget and the editing I'm really not that surprised. Same thing happened with my sister.
I know I’m somewhat in the minority here, but A New Hope is my favorite Star Wars film. In fact, it’s my favorite film of all time. I know that Star Wars seems like a boring, obvious choice for a favorite film, but frankly, this film seems oddly underrated now. Not that many people would say they dislike it, but I feel like it’s so overtaken by the praise for The Empire Strikes Back now that people don’t give as much thought to A New Hope. It’s alot like Batman Begins in that respect, where the sequel gets so much of the love that it eclipses the first film. But yeah, I love basically everything about A New Hope. I love the simple but well-told story, the likable characters, the combination of western and sci-fi aesthetics, the spectacular visual effects, the appropriation of the film serial format, the countless cinematic homages, and of course the boundless, boundless visual creativity. George Lucas is my favorite filmmaker of all time, and this film (at least to me) stands as his greatest masterpiece.
+VirtualBoy500 I'm with you on that. The first is my all-time favorite. I acknowledge that Empire Strikes Back is a better made film, but I prefer the optimism of A New Hope.
I think the biggest thing with star wars is its atmposphere and the way it makes you feel. Something the preqs failed to do(FYI the preqs were part of my childhood, not the original trilogy)
Star Wars was just ground breaking at the time it was release. The special effect, and combination of both the East & the West, the highly well developed & attractive character design, simple but yet extremely well executed story line, making this a legendary film in American history. Ask any people around the world, they may not know Star Trek, Terminator, Robocop, etc, but I believe 99.99% of them know about Star Wars. That's how ground breaking the movie it was and the movie still tons of fun to watch after all these years.
I knew of Star Wars when I was a kid, but it wasn't until I watched A New Hope in class one year (during a Christmas party we were allowed to watch a movie) that I actually saw the film. I was completely floored by what I was watching. I immediately went home and begged my parents to get me the movies (I only got to see the first 45 minutes in class and had to know how it ended.) Thinking back, I was probably ten or eleven at the time. I never had any interest in the series at all until I saw the film. The only other movie that ever captured my imagination as much as Star Wars was Jurassic Park.
I don't remember when I first saw the Star Wars trilogy, because I was really young, but I remember watching Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi a lot more than the original one. My best friend has never really watched the Star Wars films(he said he's tried to watch the prequels but finds them boring so he can never really sit through them), so last week I had to explain to him what the films were about. He had no idea that Anakin Skywalker is Darth Vader. And he didn't know who Luke Skywalker was. 😂 Bless his heart. I was having so much fun explaining it all to him.
"Star Wars [IV]: A New Hope" is classic. If you didn't find this movie cheesy, well that's great. I just love this movie. It will remember as that for over 40 years. The characters were classic. You remember Darth Vader, Luke, Han, Leia, 3PO, D2, Chewbacca, Obi-Wan, and the rest of the crew. They're all classic characters we grew up with and they seem very identical. I like these one-liners, some good dialogue, and they seem having fun for their performance whenever it's serious or fun. I love the story. A simple young protagonist from a distant planet who tags along with his team to save the princess from the evil Death Star with creativity and stylistic. It's a great good vs. evil story. The tone is excellent whenever I enjoy watching these characters in the big screen, they were excellent. The score, the locations, the filmmaking creativity (some clean with special editions which can be help, but almost as a little distraction), and the action. "Star Wars" is the first Star Wars film that changes film history and I still love it. #StarWars40th
There is an old saying: "Fantasy is a *genre,* not an *excuse.*" That's why I don't let inconsistencies and plot holes slide just because that's not "what fantasies are about."
I missed the hype as a kid and watched these movies as an adult, and honestly, they were just fun. Yes corny, yes cliché plot lines, but by God so much fun. I loved our main trio and the robots and I loved watching them interact, and the sets and costumes and effects felt nostalgic and warm. It made me feel like a kid again watching something like The Wizard of Oz or Swiss Family Robinson. I watched them again with my kid sis and she also fell in love. The prequels I've stayed away from though...
I used to love this movie as a kid. Star Wars was one of my all time favorite franchises. After watching this one again recently though, I thought it was good, but not great. Aside from some scenes, especially the awesome Death Star battle, there wasn't much to this one. It was mostly just setting up this world and doing a couple other things. Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi however were the ones that brought more to the table, especially Empire, which I watched again a couple days ago and honestly found it WAY more interesting and well made than the first Star Wars.
When I watched this, I was completely lost. I had no idea what was going on. I actually understood the plot better when it was the side story in the Phineas and Ferb Special.
It's fair to say it's over-prasied, but at the time it was just so new and different I can see how it became such a pop-culture-icon, especially with that amazing world-building. Now-a-days, I'd say it's a 7/10 movie.
Alec Guinness was always my favorite part of this movie. Despite having no idea about what his character had really seen or done, he still delivered every line with a conviction the other actors (apart from Peter Cullen and James Earl Jones) couldn't muster.
Even as a snobby foreign film enthusiast, gotta admit that Star Wars really is just THAT tight and perfect of a movie. It's pacing is truly the stuff of miracles. I sometimes wonder if the George LUcas of back then was replaced by a new Hutt Lucas XD
What I find funny about this video is that not too long ago it was just called: "Star Wars." And now it's "Star Wars: Episode IV." Did anyone else notice that "subtle" change.lol
I didn't watch Star Wars until late middle school having heard everything about this movie franchise. I watched it 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, then 3 and I didn't care for it. I never got why it's so massively popular and still don't. I will watch the new one when it comes out though.
Star Wars was, in my opinion, where movies have reached top forme. Movies such as the original Godfather are in its own category, but Star Wars went above and beyond expectations. It's also the earliest on my list of favorite movies, and in my top 10 along with its 2 sequels.
Star Wars, at its core, is a pretty simple story. You have all the archetypes for a epic or something like it: 1. a Hero (Luke Skywalker). 2. a Villain (Darth Vader). 3. a Princess (Leia Organa). 4. a wise old man (Ben Kenobi). 5. Comedic relief (R2-D2 and C-3PO). 6. an Empire. 7. a Rebellion. 8. a Castle (the Death Star). 9. a Companion who realizes too late that they're in over their head (Han Solo). What Star Wars did, however, was present it in such a way that people were wondering just HOW IN THE WORLD did they do THAT.
I played Knights of the Old Republic before seeing ANY of the six movies in their entirety. I remember watching bits and pieces of the prequels on TV and getting bored when I was young. I loved KOTOR though! I think the biggest selling point of Star Wars is its universe.
I first saw Star Wars in 1977 here in the UK... And it was only after seeing Star Wars that I actually started developing a love for Myths and Legends... To this day I love anything to do with Myths, especially Greek and Nordic Legends... Doug Walker I think has hit a very big nail on the head there!
+Channel Awesome I have future Disneycember ideas. Can you follow theses ideas in the future? Wonderful World of Disney, Disney Channel Original Movies, direct-to-video movies, Lucas movies, Disney TV movies, Playhouse Disney movies, sequels, Disney Christmas movies, Muppets, maybe Sesame Street, and maybe others too.
Wow, someone else whose intro to the Star Wars universe was (primarily) through those Ewok-related TV shows/movies!! xD Glad to know I wasn't the only one.
Well spoken Doug. Actually to be fair on the film's issues or nostalgia glasses overpraise, you have to understand that even Lucas had so much shit to go through to get this film done. Yeah, search up about Episode 4's (or how it was released: Star Wars,) constant production issues, it's pretty incredible to learn. It's actually the few reasons why i think of Gary Kurtz, the producer of the first two Star Wars films and considered the father of the series, and so many others helped this film come into place (even the editors who basically SAVED the first cut of the "Unmitigated disaster." You'll hear so many tales from how Han was supposed to be a frog, C-3PO was like a used car salesman, and so many questionable things from Lucas that COULD OF made this film flop with total control. Though nevertheless, in the end of this troubled production paying homage to Flash Gordon and (unintentional) inspiration from The Hidden Fortress, we got a really damn fun film that, yes, has many issues but is the reason movies could be fun again, and showed the collaborative process of Lucas & Kurtz birth of a well made sci-fantasy known as: Star Wars.
I watched Star Wars for the first time in high school. I went in overhyped, and I went in spoiled. I knew every single damn plot twist of the original trilogy before even watching them. Every. Single. One. Needless to say, I was a little disappointed. Because I had already heard all of the praise everyone sings about the films over and over and over, it left me with nothing to focus on but the bad. The cheesiness, the datedness, the clunky dialogue and one-liners. But you know what? As hard as it is to look at these films objectively now, I can see why they're so well loved. I would probably love them too if I had grown up with them, and went in blind. But I didn't. I am really interested in this universe though, and I'll most certainly be checking out the new movies for it.
Star Wars has an unoriginal story, but tells it in an original way.
Same thing can apply to Toy Story.
The binary sunset might just be the most beatiful scene in movies period
"The magic doesn't lie in the details, but in how many different ways it can speak to you."
This. This is why I loved The Last Jedi. I can overlook the odd nonsensical or unneeded details because the stuff that's amazing is REALLY amazing.
I fucking love The Last Jedi ❤️
3:39 "The effects were ground breaking..."
*shows footage from the Special Edition's CGI altered scene*
Yeah I noticed that too. Pretty odd choice from him :D
What do I know? lol
Wawagirl17 He actually used clips from it later in the video.
John Williams is a genius
+MountainFox51 hold on someone on youtube talking SENSE!!!!!!, is that even possible?
+MountainFox51 I liked the prequels, but I think that Clone Wars is way better.
Everybody's gonna hate me for saying this. but...
I like the Star Wars prequels.
III is amazing in my opinion.
I like them too are they perfect no but I still genuinely enjoy them and I'm really tired of everyone constantly panning non stop
I don't mind them
+MetaKnight64 You'll learn to hate them like everyone else, it just takes time to realize.
+MetaKnight64 most people that grew up watching those movies would still like them if they werent so influenced by their past generations
A Magical Hermit. Yeah, let's go with that.
+DeltaDragonInfinity but that is what he's posing as
+Mariokemon No, he's posing as an old man of no import whatsoever.
+John Doe Uncle Owen actually refers to him as "that old wizard". Either the moisture farmer is very astute, or Kenobi's bad at posing as an unimportant old man.
***** Well, if you remember they met Obi-Wan in Attack of the Clones plus he was the one who gave Luke to them as a baby.
+John Doe
But the Prequels were made after 4 and beyond, so these facts werent apparent when the writing and dialogue of this movie was made.
Just watched A New Hope for the first time last night. Best decision ever.
I love the Porkins cameo. :D
Love your videos!

R.I.P Carrie Fisher. You will be missed forever, and I consider you as one of the best princesses of all time. God, I am feeling so sad right now.
It was probably the first movie I saw ever since I was born.
Sweet. BTW I still expect an Empire and Jedi YTP from you Hoffy!
+hoffy1138 That is really sad...
+Tibor Csendes ...not really?
You don't really have a choice in what the first movie is shown to you. You're very young and most likely have it chosen out by your parents.
If this person said "This is the best movie I've ever seen" or "This is the only movie I've ever seen" then yeah it would be sad.
I was introduced to it by Lego Star Wars the video game
+Commander_Ninja I cant argue with that :) I think it is sad because he or she was to young to watch those movies detachedly. I saw them when i was 14, and i am really thankful for that, because sw is not that good, and i can see that without all the childish nostalgia or overhype try to hide it from me (sorry for bad english i am a can of tuna :p )
Jar Jar is the key to all of this.
LOL

+Dylan Paterson It's like poetry, it rhymes.
I was introduced to Star Wars by my parents. This movie was great❤️
This movie should've gotten a sequel....
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
oh you
I guess we will find out if it did or not tomorrow!
+theMightyWebb Bish plz
That would never have worked, would they say that Luke is actually faders son? Please...
+theMightyWebb Have you been living under a rock? IT HAS HAD 2 SEQUELS ALREADY AND 3 PREQUELS!

R.I.P. Carrie Fisher (1956-2016)
I've heard of this movie. It's about space, right?
+Buddy Groove Close. It's the classic hero's journey set in space in the style of Akira Kurosawa's the Hidden Fortress.
+KingoftheGundam79 *facepalm Some people don't really get the internet, do they?
Wrong. It's about sand. Lots and lots and lots of sand.
+Buddy Groove Yup, a basic fantasy good vs evil story, with spaceships for 12 year olds.
Michael Anthony Jenkins I do, I was just going along with the joke by being the idiot that explains it. :D
Doug's voice going high: The Video.

good job, Doug...
Star Wars is just a part of our culture today, Which is why I get upset at people who refuse to watch it. It doesn't even matter if you somehow manage to hate it, everyone knows the symbols, sayings, and characters so well it seems like something we all should just know
Thank you for showing footage from the originals, and scenes without CGI and stuff !
Thanks :-D
Error in the video. Darth Vader didn't lead the empire, and before you sigh, Grand Moth Tarkin was ranked above Vader in the first film.
I hate to be that guy, but *Moff
This is my favourite one out of all the movies cause I watched this one like crazy as a kid and didn't have access to the other two a little bit afterwards. Will always love this movie
For me, the characters were a big positive for me. The characters feel human enough to be likable, and could be described in a paragraph.
"got into it via the ewoks cartoons"
That's almost like me first getting into it through Spaceballs. I laughed my ass of at that comedy, but then wanted to see what they were making fun of, so I borrowed some VHS tapes of the original SW trilogy from my local library (do libraries still offer movies, BTW?)
+Morgil My local library still does!
+Morgil I think so, at least in larger communites/cities.
+Morgil Not VHS tapes, but in DVD format.
This movie deserved a full length review, not a little short
+biolj Nostalgic Critic worthy movies like The Room get a full length treatment
Yeah, and really, with a movie this old that's been talked about SO MUCH for nearly 40 years, I don't think he would've had much else to say to fill up a full-length review. This was enough.
Honestly, that intro of yours gives chills up my spine everytime it plays.
tonight I'm seeing Star Wars: the Force Awakens!!!
My dad loved this movie so much he had me watching it at age 5. I pretty much had no choice but to love it.
I was there in the theatres as young boy, 1977 to 1983. The OT changed my life.
I love the original trilogy!! It’s awesome!! It’s so much better than the prequel trilogy!!
True.
Although I did enjoy Revenge Of The Sith.
Cause it's my favorite one from the prequels.
And it's been the best one of the prequels imo.
Agreed

Ray Muniz
It's not the opinion I don't like.
James Earl Jones: the 1 & only true Vader.
Reading in general and reading for the full experience of a movie or show (especially for those that are not included in the cinematic feature).
also Han shot first
+Riley Smith
Greedo didn't shoot at all.
+Riley Smith [Takes a shot, because drinking game]
Gurren Riley Not anymore.
XenoSpyro Now he did.
For the record, I don’t mind Greedo shooting first as long as Han gets him in the end.
I accidentally found Star Wars when i was 6 or 7. My 16 year old cousin had the VHS set at my grandparents and i came across them, thought the box art, specifically Vader, looked cool and asked if we could watch one. Got hooked ever since.
The best thing Disney could do is say the prequels didn't happen
+ben krug Well Prequels count, just any mention of anything story wise from Prequels won't happen
+ben krug
The prequels happened. And without them, a lot of things don't make sense.
+Ikrani Actually with the prequels existing even more things don't make sense, without them we would still have fun and interesting questions and discussions.
gojiguyver3
What do the prequels introduce that add to the list of things in the originals that don't make sense?
+ben krug They happened, they are here to stay, they are part of the Star Wars canon and are just as important as the originals. A lot of people like them, a lot of people with continue to mention and reference them. Deal with it.
Just watched again it for the first time in 5 years. It still holds up well
What if I told you that you were early to a NC video?
😂 i didn't notice until i read this comment
Doug, I've been followed this channel for a few months now. And I just love it. I do cardistry , which is an artform very different from movies, but the approach you have I try to replicate in order to get inspiration and improve myself . Your videos have helped me to see beyond some things, beyond obvious and I thank you for that. Also it gives me a lot of laughs :)
Thanks to Doug and all people who are part of this CHANNEL AWESOME. Saludos desde Chile
Do you think Doug will review the Clone Wars movie too?
+Kyle Shea Doubt that, its not Disney related, heck I don't think its even Fox related, Cartoon Network did it, and I think at one point Netflix was in control
EeveeParty97 Yeah, I guess you're right. If he did hear of the show, I was wondering what his thoughts were on it.
+EeveeParty97 Warner Brothers 2008
Uru19861 It was Warner Bros?! Wow forgot that.
+EeveeParty97 It was before George Lucas sold the franchise to Disney. So yeah
a new hope to me will always be one of my favourite movies
Douchy: DOOOOO!! HOW DARE YOU REVIEW EPISODE 4 BEFORE EPISODE 1!!! YOU'RE THE DEVIL!
It makes sense because Episode 4 came out first.
DDDOOOOOWWWWWWW!!!!
+Karim Yamout Douchy!!! What are you doing out of the Plot Hole?!! Get back in there!!!!
THE PLOT HOLE HAS TELEPORTED ME TO THHE REALMS OF THEEE INTERNETSS AND NOW I HAVE TAKEN OVER THIS TROLLS ACCOUNT... I SEE EVERYTHINGG DOWWWWWWWWWW
+Karim Yamout don´t you mean chernabog ( don´t know how it´s spelled)?
Yeah James Earl Jones is the voice of Darth Vader but you forget to credit David prowse, he is the body actor that gave Earl's voice such a stature and he is British so star wars has great British actors.
Let's hope he doesn't get ripped to shreds for this
Perhaps my favourite film trilogy of all time
But Disney didn't make this.
He's just reviewing movies Disney owns
but Disney don't own episode 4, and they never will - 20th century fox are keeping it...
He's doing this since the force awakens comes out soon.
+You Tubed Yeah but who gives a shit
Peter Whitehead, you were saying?
I love how the original version of Star Wars was used for the footage shown.
I agree, I felt that Star Wars Episode IV was very boring. I think episode V and VI are great, though.
***** Oh look, what would this be, a butthurt fanboy perhaps? Just because something is popular, doesn't mean everyone will mindlessly like it.
+THE CHAMP IS HERE!!! The hypocrisy is strong in this one.
***** Look yourself in the mirror. Your second reply is a perfect response to your first.
Also, Adam from YMS had made fun of you where you react your jump scare over John C. Reilly in "Unfriended" review. Ha, ha!
My sister hates this movie! She claims that its boring and nothing happens in it. And she's in high school
Tell her to watch the sequels. *Not* the prequels, only the sequels.
+The Cartoonsiastic she's never seen the prequels. A New Hope is the first one she's seen and she hated it. For her sake, she better like Empire Strikes Back
+Joseph Najjar my sister likes it when the bad guys win in movies, so she must like Empire Strikes Back
+Retro Redemption anything that has Eddie Redmayne in it.
VirtualBoy500 Yeah A New Hope is my favorite Star Wars Movie too
I am ready for people to hate this comment and me. I don't like the original trilogy I like the prequels
"Kirosawa"
[eye twitches involuntarily]
Thank you Doug for saying this series is overblown, while fantastic. I 100% agree
ITS ABOUT TIME!
I knew of Star Wars when I was a kid, but it wasn't until I watched A New Hope in class one year (during a Christmas party we were allowed to watch a movie) that I actually saw the film. I was completely floored by what I was watching.
I immediately went home and begged my parents to get me the movies (I only got to see the first 45 minutes in class and had to know how it ended.)
Thinking back, I was probably ten or eleven at the time.
There is an old saying: "Fantasy is a *genre,* not an *excuse.*"
That's why I don't let inconsistencies and plot holes slide just because that's not "what fantasies are about."
What’s the song that is played in the background of this video
I love star wars! The music is awesome!
I like going into the new comments of these old reviews
Even as a snobby foreign film enthusiast, gotta admit that Star Wars really is just THAT tight and perfect of a movie. It's pacing is truly the stuff of miracles. I sometimes wonder if the George LUcas of back then was replaced by a new Hutt Lucas XD
I grew up on this I over it
Lol well i've always noticed it when i re-watch but i still love watching it. xD
What I find funny about this video is that not too long ago it was just called: "Star Wars." And now it's "Star Wars: Episode IV." Did anyone else notice that "subtle" change.lol
According to Carrie Fisher in a recent interview, Lucas specifically directed her to use a British accent during the scene with Tarkin.
I didn't watch Star Wars until late middle school having heard everything about this movie franchise. I watched it 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, then 3 and I didn't care for it. I never got why it's so massively popular and still don't. I will watch the new one when it comes out though.
No clips from special editions or blu ray... Respect
2:25 um snap?
I fucking died when you said that, and I'm still laughing a year later.😂😂😂
One of the greatest movies of all time
Star Wars was, in my opinion, where movies have reached top forme. Movies such as the original Godfather are in its own category, but Star Wars went above and beyond expectations. It's also the earliest on my list of favorite movies, and in my top 10 along with its 2 sequels.
Star Wars, at its core, is a pretty simple story. You have all the archetypes for a epic or something like it:
1. a Hero (Luke Skywalker).
2. a Villain (Darth Vader).
3. a Princess (Leia Organa).
4. a wise old man (Ben Kenobi).
Episode 4 is just a simple exciting space adventure and good versus evil story.
I need to rewatch the original Star Wars.
Heck i love all the movies.
I absolutely appreciate that you used the VHS version for your footage. Shame calling it "A new hope" though!
Carrie Fisher addresses the accent thing in "Wishful Drinking". Basically she was like, "Ya, I can't do this accent" and she stopped the accent.

+ShockwaveXd619 Ignorant comments deserve to be replied.

Wow, someone else whose intro to the Star Wars universe was (primarily) through those Ewok-related TV shows/movies!! xD Glad to know I wasn't the only one.
I'm just thinking on this a bit; the musical theme in the DisneyCember intro is great. The regular NC theme is awesome too, while we're on the topic.
This is one of my favourite films of all time. I fucking love it.
It's actually the few reasons why i think of Gary Kurtz, the producer of the first two Star Wars films and considered the father of the series, and so many others helped this film come into place (even the editors who basically SAVED the first cut of the "Unmitigated disaster."
You'll hear so many tales from how Han was supposed to be a frog, C-3PO was like a used car salesman, and so many questionable things from Lucas that COULD OF made this film flop with total control.
