      That's one thing that's super important - the fact that the Prequels expanded upon the uses of the Force and never stepped too far. The sequels, on the other hand, is ruined by "power escalation", a concept that has led to the demise of several beloved anime. Every character is OP now; Rey can just stop a cargo ship from leaving the atmosphere using the Force and destroy it using lightning, Palpatine can just effortlessly raise a thousand ships from under the sea and just impulse the entire Resistance fleet by shooting lightning beams into the sky. What the hell is this? I swear to god, in some future movie, some OP af character will just move an entire planet using the Force and throw it onto the opponent like Thanos does in Infinity War. There's no boundary for the Force now, characters can just do whatever the fuck they want, and there's no stake or any sense of mysticism. As much as I loved certain aspects of the sequels, I utterly despise what they've done with the Force. It's no longer something you train in for several years, it's just a super-power that you're born with. What an absolute joke. The Sequels had a lot of good moments, but unfortunately, it just cannot be considered canon. It overstepped several boundaries.

      @@Fred-xy9ch I partially disagree. TPM and ATOC look dated, especially when you re-watch the Gungans vs. Battle droids battle, particularly when you get a good look at those AAT tanks. Very blocky-looking nowadays. ATOC has a lot of incredible shots, such as the battle scenes, sweeping panoramic landscape views, gorgeous interior and exterior building viewpoints, etc, that still hold up. Even the opening shot itself is incredible, but yes I do see much datedness in many of the explosion effects and scenes in general. Regardless, the PT still largely holds up to this day. The VFX were literally groundbreaking and revolutionary for a reason. The PT are indeed 16-22 year old films, so of course they'll sort of suffer from that fate, it is what it is. Many critics of the CGI are too harsh and fail to realize that fact.

    The prequals had good worldbuilding, even though that took the “boring” politics to establish. The galaxy felt big, things were constantly moving, you knew there was always tons of shit happening off-screen and that made the galaxy feel alive. You knew who the seps were, what they wanted, where they were and what tactics they used. You knew what the republic was, where they were, who fought for them, their tactics, etc.
    Can you say that about the sequals? I have no idea what the resistance is, why they exist and what they resist. I don’t know where they are, don’t know how large their number is, don’t know how they connect to the Republic. All I know is that they use rebel tech and tactics. The same goes for the first order and the republic. It always felt like the rest of the galaxy wasn’t even there.
    Hell, I’m not even sure that Corusant is still around or if the first order destroyed it. That’s how bad the worldbuilding is

    • @sackofcheese4190
      @sackofcheese4190 4 года назад +8

      piccolo917 So your saying the SEQUELS didn’t have world building because they didn’t explain what the resistance was? There called the SEQUELS because they thought people would at least see the OG trilogy.

    • @piccolo917
      @piccolo917 4 года назад +110

      @@sackofcheese4190 I'm not saying they did no world-building, but what they did was insufficient and at times self-contradicting.
      The thing about them following the OT is that in the OT there was no resistance, only rebels. With the rebels you knew who they fought and why. I can't say that I knew those aspects of the resistance right off the bat. But at the very start of ep 7, do you know what they resist and hence exist? The galaxy is peaceful, there is a republic that likely has security forces, so why is there a resistance? According to the same movie, the FO only takes children sneakily and wipes out all traces of its raids.
      Which is a problem in and of itself. The FO is powerful enough to have a giant fleet, own multiple star systems, can build a planet-sized death star and more, but is never noticed? There were no merchants ever wondering why a certain section of space had a virtually unlimited desire for metals and that there was never anything send out to check for it?
      And there is so much more where this came from. With the empire it was easy to understand how they could build the death star: They owned the galaxy save for a few hideouts which were occupied by the rebels who had supporters in the Empire that allowed them to build their weapons of war.
      But one thing that was crucial about the death stars was that they economically crippled the Empire, with especially the Kyber crystals needed for the actual laser being super hard to find. So how the fuck does the FO build a weapon even larger than the second death star by a wide margin without the economy of the galaxy? And where the fuck does Palpy get all the crystals to build those death star destroyers?
      It. makes. no. sense.

    • @sackofcheese4190
      @sackofcheese4190 4 года назад +5

      What do you mean you don’t know what they’re resisting? Your putting this like we didn’t know what they were resisting because it wasn’t shown in the first scene like in the OG trilogy was. Don’t quote me on this I don’t remember exactly what was on the title crawl of ep7 but I’m pretty sure it said at least SOMETHING about the First Order. You saying we don’t know what the resistance was resisting is kinda absurd. Which is also why they exist. To stop what they don’t believe in. Also pretty sure somewhere it said they only had about 300 or so people but I don’t see how that matters a whole lot. Don’t recall in the OG trilogy they said how many troops they had, maybe I’m wrong about that. And why do they have to be related to the republic? Once the republic won in episode six there was no need for the republic anymore. The resistance probably had many beliefs similar to the republic which is why Han and Leia joined the resistance. I know this is complicated and they probably should’ve explained this to us but wasn’t Star Wars supposed to be put to the imagination. This stuff isn’t that hard you just got to use your imagination and piece this it together.

    Personally I think the thing that got more people to like the Prequel Trilogy was Star Wars The Clone Wars. It fixed a lot of The Prequels shortcomings. You got to form more attachments to the Clones (Such as Rex, Cody, Heavy, 99, Echo, Fives, Waxor, Boil) more battle sequences between the Republic and Separatist forces. More interesting political issues to discuss showing how clever Palpatine’s ultimate goal was. The return of Darth Maul was handled really well also when it could’ve crashed and burned. And above all it showed Anakin’s eventual turn to the Dark Side. He goes behind the Jedi Councils back. He shows his anger towards them especially during the Rako Hardene arc, as well as the council turning on Ashoka. All up to the point where Anakin’s turn to the Dark Side in Episode 3 was a powder keg ready to be lit.

Other stuff I loved about the show are: Anakin arguably being more likeable than in the films (he is exactly what Obi-Wan described to Luke: best star pilot in the whole galaxy, cunning warrior, and a good friend), Ahsoka Tano's character development, getting to know more about the more obscure Jedi we saw in the prequels like Shaak Ti or Barriss Offee, and more!

      Yup, I think all they were missing was a few more talented voices giving input, and they would've been great films. I still like them, even tho they're not very good. But the point is, you could see the vision, the creativity, and the overall idea the story was trying to show. It just wasn't executed very well. If Lucas had real help executing that vision, it could've turned out very different.
      Whereas the new films have the opposite problem. They have very good creators who know how to write dialogue, how to lead the film from place to place in a way that makes sense, and so on....but they lack any real vision, creativity, central idea of what the story should be, etc. I prefer the clunky movies that knew what Star Wars is over the smoothly crafted films that are nothing more than average generic sci fi films with the title Star Wars slapped on them

    Watching anakin’s fall and luke’s refusal to turn together is perfect. You see the jedi council’s separation from personal attachment led to anakin’s turn since yoda basically told him to embrace death, leading to turn palpatine’s teachings since he offered to help. We watch a teenager lose his mother in 2 and a man try avidly to prevent the same loss from befalling his wife in 3. The council’s refusal to embrace both sides was their ultimate failure. This adds weight to luke’s training in 5 and 6 since obi wan and yoda focused more on embracing the darkness, preventing from falling to temptation as his father once had.

      This is pretty interesting since this is somewhat what Rian Johnson tried to do in episode 8 too by trying to have "Bad guy with funny lightsaber" (I can't remember his name at all) turn on the Sith and wanting create his own balance in the force with Rei and also by having Yoda and Luke destroy the Jedi books. Instead of having extreme good and extreme bad balance each other out they create a universal balance where good people can do bad things etc. Not just "Bad guy is bad, good guy good" but also having being good and evil relative to what you consider being good and evil. It's cool how those parts and the prequel films went hand in hands in that way and it could've been a great ending to the new trilogy. Too bad the rest of the film was awful in every way. Wasted potential.

    • @rexveritate
      @rexveritate 4 года назад

      DantesGrill I quite enjoyed rian’s depiction of the force in 8 as balance which in essence we should all strive towards, further elaborating on the eastern philosophy lucas used to inspire the jedi order. The issues I take going forward are force skyping and force ghosts interacting with the physical plane. Yoda is exceptionally powerful in 8 as a jedi, and since he’s a ghost, there’s no way he can die again. He could have appeared in Sheev’s throne room before 6 and killed the emperor, which is the same that can be said about Luke, Obi Wan, and Yoda with regards to Snoke. No “good” life is lost, and problem solved

    • @DantesGrill
      @DantesGrill 4 года назад

      +Rex Veritate Yeah, some of the force stuff were ridiculous, although you must admit that Yoda creating that lightning was a great visual. Force skyping has been a thing for a while though, although not on this level. I think they should've held back on it and made it more subtle like in the first films where it's more like sending a thought or a hunch instead. If ep 7-9 had been planned from beginning to end it could've brought some great imagery and storytelling with it, adding some mystery to it. Now in ep 8 it just becomes a bit too on the nose. Even Luke could've evolved further over multiple films and used his strong Skywalker genes whilst alive instead of having Yoda do stuff, have him just being Luke's ghost mentor instead. Yoda would be like Gazoo in The Flintstones but less dumb!

    • @rexveritate
      @rexveritate 4 года назад

      DantesGrill I agree! Episode 7 was a direct reaction to the prequels, as it was “a return to form” given that the prequels deviated quite heavily from 4-6. At the very least, plan out a trilogy. Whether people like the OG films or the prequels or not, at least they were planned out to create a 3-act narrative. These films are just the creators responding to fans’ reactions. People didn’t like the prequels, so we have 7 close to 4. People didn’t like 7 cuz of the comedy, so rogue one is grittier. People thought it was boring, so 8 was wildly different. People bitched about 8 for 2 years, so 9 is a jumbled mess. You know my thoughts on 8, but if we all kept quiet and went along with it, 9 would be a better story. But again, they shoulda planned this from the start. Above all, Disney is so absorbed with making money they forget the basic idea of creating anything-people are always gonna hate/critique your work. They wanna please the most amount of people to make the best return on their investment that they have to constantly scramble to fix shit. That’s why they’re making rewrites/reshoots at the end of the line

I recently rewatched them and still very much disagree with his and others critiques of the overall structure of the prequels. I agree the writing is awful, and certain characters could have been fleshed out more, but there is far more potential and interest in them than the sequels by a long shot, and unlike the sequels, the bones of the prequels are good.

      I agree, the core story the prequels tell is actually amazing.
      Sadly, the core plot of Palpatine instigating all the conflicts in the movies to gain power is covered by a layer of forced romance, sometimes wooden acting and an unhealthy dose of putting the focus on the wrong elements.
      The Phantom Menace becomes outright awesome when seen from the perspective of Palpatine in the novel Darth Plageous, which Disney sadly decided to throw out along with all the other EU stuff (and then certain people dare to say that there was no source material to draw from, when their new characters almost seem like bad copies of EU characters).
      I grew up with the prequels, and I've found more and more of the flaws in them, but I still like them for the core plot and, I'll admit that, the fight scenes.
      Heck, I even like some parts of the new movies, but there's so much inconsistency and stupidity (of the characters) in them that it drags them down more for me than the flaws of the prequels.

Not to mention that the reasons why the sequels are seen as bad movies are completely different than the prequels’. I’m not going to start writing a whole essay about this, but it basically boils down to the fact that the prequels, for all their flaws, had love and care put into them, while the sequels are nothing but just your standard modern Hollywood cheaply made cash grabs, that do nothing but completely invalidate the movies that came before them. I found the world building fascinating, and it made Star Wars come alive to me. It’s important to realize that politics played a *huge* part even the novels that Doug praises; they were always there in the background of Star Wars. They just came to the forefront of the prequels. It kinda was an unspoken rule. Go back to before Episode VII was even announced and there was this unspoken agreement that we all kinda hated the prequels. Even if you didn't personally hate the prequels, they were generally accepted to be not very good movies.
      Fans were NOT happy with Jar Jar Binks, Annakin's hatred of sand, the wooden acting, etc.
      And before you try to point out the good points that the prequels had, understand this. See all that praise the prequels are getting in the comments of this video? Yeah, you didn't see that a decade ago. No one praised these movies. You didn't have droves of people coming together to defend the prequels. Not until their was a new "target" to focus their anger and hatred on.
      Trust me, the moment Disney decides to do Episodes 10-12, I promise you that suddenly everyone will come out and praise the parts of the sequels they liked. You'll hear all the "I didn't LOVE the sequels, but at least they didn't--" just like you're hearing everyone say about the prequels. Everyone will decry the "Super Sequels" as the worst thing ever while talking about how much better the sequels were.

Luke went from the hero of the Rebellion, who always looked for the good in people, such as Vader, and refused to kill them, to being a hermit who tried to mercilessly murder his own nephew in his sleep for having started falling to the dark side.
      Had they not ruined previous characters, treated Threepio like he was worthless, and actually gone somewhere with characters like Finn, who were set up for really interesting character development, the movies would have been utterly fantastic.
      Alas, Disney failed us by having no plan whatsoever, paying out to make cash grabs, and leaving fans miserable. At least Kylo Ren was done good, and BB-8 is adorable.

      Look back at the Original trilogy. There’s PLENTY of inconsistencies if you look hard enough. Off the top of my head: why did Vader not sense that he was torturing his daughter in ANH? How did Leia remember Padmé? If Leia “always knew” that Luke was her brother, why didn’t she tell him, or why did she make out with him, twice?! Can’t Obi-Wan’s ghost train Luke, instead of Yoda? I’m not saying this ruins Star Wars, I’m saying this doesn’t matter.

    I'm Indian, let me tell you a thing. Me and my siblings watched all the trilogies during coronavirus lockdown. They didn't have any idea of star wars before that. Honestly they liked prequels and original trilogies the most, they connected most to anykin. They felt for him. They were very sad watching anykin Skywalker becoming Darth vedar.
    They hated Disney films, literally got irritated watching last jedi. And laughed at seeing the ending of 'Rise of Skywalker'. They joked like 'Rey came to their family, killed a family member and took their last name.' They didn't like the idea of force healing. After rise of Skywalker ended, my sister told me 'brother, then anykin died for nothing'
    My siblings are young who had no idea of star wars lore. If they couldn't digest disney trilogies then I doubt future generations will. I'm sure in later years original and prequel trilogies will gain more respect. I don't think even younger generation would like Disney films when they get old. And guess what, after ROS, I asked them to watch spin-offs like rouge one and solo, they weren't excited. They are like 'oh god no, now what the hell they would show in those'. If I were to state an Avatar analogy for what each SW trilogy sort of feels like to me:
      *Originals ->* “Avatar: The Last Airbender“, where you have the near perfect series out of the blue, which sets the standard for the rest of the franchise.
      *Prequels ->* “The Legend of Korra”, where you have something that is flawed in execution and contains some issues like awkward romantic subplots. But you still get plenty of original stories, lore, villains/conflicts, etc. plus some dramatic parts that do land for me and some nice chances to see classic characters as their younger/older selves. I guess one difference, though, is that the SW prequels had flawed directing such as the over-reliance on CGI when it was still in its infancy, while TLoK still had mostly solid animation throughout.
      *Sequels ->* An alternate hypothetical sequel series for Avatar, where almost everything accomplished by Aang, Sokka, Katara, Iroh, and Zuko is undone. Everyone is now back to fighting a group of villains, who are the Fire Nation in everything except for the name. The show either rehashes old story beats from TLA or makes a mess of the new things is does consider trying, before going back on them. And it finally turns out that the main villain behind everything was a much older FireLord Ozai, who somehow got his fire-bending powers back.

The prequels were still very successful and even though a lot of fans of the original trilogy don't like them the prequels brought in a new generation of Star Wars fans to the franchise which the legend of Korra wasn't able to do judging by the fast ratings decline. @NovaPrime Productions I can see what SicParvisMagna means when he says the prequels have been out for 20 years vs the new sequels: most people have only seen the sequels once, and even that viewing has been tainted by the hype (whether negative or positive) surrounding it. One reason I'm personally not particularly excited about all these Sequel Trilogy Hot Takes coming out right now is that we're reviewing them in a bubble that isn't going to exist 5 years from now - fair, for most movies, but unfair when we're comparing our immediate reactions to the legacies (again, good or bad) of the other two trilogies.
      The prequels probably should have been forgettable movies. I'm sure a big reason they aren't is that they're Star Wars, and carry all the privileges of that franchise; tie-in materials, TV shows, the EU as a whole... and of course, they've been memed to the moon and back. Half the commenters on here are citing supplementary material (the Clone Wars TV shows, the video games) as reasons why they like the prequels. And, one final point, the prequels have finally hit that sweet age where they're childhood nostalgia for the coveted 18-35 year old demographic. So yeah, the age difference is pretty significant.

    The worst mistake that the new trilogy made imo, other than not having a cohesive story, is not even attempting to be part of a bigger narrative with the movies 1-6. Which hurts them in the long run... just think about it, one of the biggest reasons the prequels have survived all of these years, is because fans do star wars marathons all the time, and 1-6 feel like a big story that is worth watching all at once. Its the story about the fall and redemption of anakin, the fall of the republic and rise of the empire and palpatine, and how peace was recovered through civil war with a small group of rebels. The new trilogy is just... the wacky adventures of rey, finn and kylo, fighting the monster of the week. I watch them and think "What was the point of that?"
    There is no reason to watch them with the others aside from... thats what happened next. Giving a similar vibe to the alien, robocop or terminator sequels. Or even Solo or rogue one, just because they have some of the same characters that doesnt mean they are part of the same narrative.
    Fans don't simply watch LOTR: The two towers in isolation, or Return of the jedi in isolation, they are usually part of a bigger movie experience, and at least for me, i know that i won't be adding 7-9 to my star wars sessions, because i have no reason to watch them alongside the others

      I agree with you. I felt little flickers of them TRYING to be part of the bigger narrative (for example, I thought Rey was going to be a reflection of Luke....that she took the books so she could create the Grey Jedi. I thought her seeing a reflection of herself in the dark cave rather than her parents was like Luke's experience in the Force Tree....he wasn't ready to see the truth yet, so he saw himself as Vader. Now she's the Emperor's granddaughter? WHY? But other than having familiar characters in the movie, I NEVER ONCE got the impression it was connected to the original trilogy. Questions were left unanswered. WHY did Han and Leia separate? Why is Luke's lightsaber suddenly with Maz and what is its connection to Rey? Why couldn't Leia teach her son if she was willing to teach Rey? Why didn't Leia take a more active role in searching for Luke? WHY does Leia suddenly have Force powers?

    • @diegog1853
      @diegog1853 4 года назад +11

      @@CeltycSparrow Yeah i agree...
      George lucas made a point in both trilogies, the prequel trilogy was the age of the light side of the force and democratic goverment, the original trilogy was the age of the dark side and an imperial tiranical goverment.
      If anakin was all about bringing balance, and neither jedi or sith can do that? How do you achive that? If a democratic republic and an empire both failed, How do you go from there?
      Just introducing again jedi and sith completely undermines the point of the previous two.
      If the previous two were about the conflict between light and dark this could be about the conclusion to that conflict, achieving true balance, a grey age.
      And to be fair, the last jedi kind of touched those topics but never went far with them.

      @@rydermccall3590 Just worth noting, that he did that already in AotC with the Sand People kids.
      That said, I don't know if RotS is actually good-good. The first third, that big space battle, is pretty meh. You don't really get invested in it, or at least I don't. And Anakin's lines/motivation are often pretty bad. And of course, there's that "Noooo!" Overall, I'd say TPM is the best of the three. Yeah, it has the lame humor with Jar-Jar and the pod race announcers, but if you can get past that, or actually find it funny, it's a fun watch throughout. AotC is the one I want to be my favorite, but I can't say that it is, because that middle part drags so much. So that's sort of the problem with the prequels... each has a big flaw, and each has its good points. But on the plus side, each built up the universe, made it bigger, and despite their flaws, increased my interest in the SW universe and its possibilities. And that's where the new trilogies fail, especially TLJ, which lessened my interest, something even the Ewok movies didn't do ;)

    The sequels are not a “more competent” trilogy, they’re a disaster, they have no story, they have no consistency, the characters are dull, the world building is non existent, there is no logical political context. The prequels on the other hand have a great story, cool characters, amazing world building, and honestly if you’d not like the dialogue, the acting, or the “directing” it’s completely subjective. The prequels are great movies that tell an epic story, the sequels are, as you said, a series of assignments.

      Master Oogway I don’t rlly see how it humiliated original characters.
      Leia - becomes major leader of resistance while also learning the ways of the Jedi from her brother. Death was kinda stupid but I allow it cause the actor is literally dead.
      Han - Broken by what happened to his son, runs away to do the one thing he knows best until he learns to face his son and try to bring him back from the dark side
      Luke - crushed by the biggest failure of his life, losing his nephew to the dark side whom Leia and Han trusted him with all because of a stupid instinctive reaction due to the evils his father became. Goes into exile as he loses all belief in the good of the force and the Jedi.
      I wouldn’t say it destroyed the lore as the only things that aren’t nitpick was the Holdo maneuver and Palpatine coming back. The Holdo maneuver was mentioned in ROS as a one in a million chance, which is at least some reasoning. Palpatine returning was stupid but it didn’t rlly break lore.
      Meanwhile the prequels are less entertaining, have worse acting, have worse dialogue, and terrible visuals.
