I really would love studying with you. Everything so clear. Also when a question pops in my mind you immediately explain that point. This book especially really need some guidance because it's not super straight forward. When I came across the Jim Chapin first time years ago I was really confused by the swing pattern in 16th. but you really explain the concept perfectly

Great video! I was like, man I have to order this book. Then I found out that I already had it when I bought a bunch of books from my drum teacher😁

My son is doing this section of the book and is confused by the straight-eighth versus swing style. He plays it both ways but insists it should be played as written. Your video clarifies that either way is OK. What I want to know is, why are you buzzing all the tied notes? Is that how it's meant to be played?

Buzzing those tied notes is just another way to practice the book.
You do not have to do it that way but it does add musicality to those sections as you are playing the notes to length. He should practice it with and without the buzzes.
Your son is correct about the straight 8th section being played as written.
Otherwise it would be exactly the same as the dotted 8th section.

¡Hello Rick, greetings from Colombia, thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and experience! I have a pair of questions, if you could help me: 1. Which should be de difference in level of sound between accented and unaccented notes (maybe ,Forte, piano?). 2. What is the meaning of the marks in the beggining of the each melodic exercises (blues, jump, easy bounce, etc), are those maybe tempo marks? Thanks a lot!!! Muchísimas gracias Rick !!!

      Hi David
I would say mf to FF for the dynamics. Its not quite like ghosting which would be pp to FF.
      The tempos are as follows
Jump should be in the 160 to 200 range
Bounce should be in the 110 to 160 range. This goes for the blues tempos as well.
Slow should be in the 80 to 110 range.
Fast and very fast should be 200 and above

Rick ...Any particular reason why you don't address the cut time in the etudes.

      Hi Gary
Not sure of the significance of the cut time since you can just view it as 4/4 or 2/2. It's the same thing.
It's just written in half time.
