You can definitely tell the lines were written for Edgar's Ansem; his portrayal is more subdued and reserved than Zane's bombastic and menacing aura. Still, it's a good shot! Maybe it's just a sign of Ansem's character development along the way, trying to be more subtle than he had been before. Keep it up!
I find that the calmer aspect of his speech here reminds me a lot of when he was robed, tempting Riku with the darkness. I actually used a voice model I trained from those scenes for this clip for that very reason. I think this calmer, more calculated Ansem is closer to who he really is than the hammy monologues from KH1, as awesome as Zane's performance made them.
I find it interesting that even after they got their hands on Sora, they got their hands on Rikuplica, Ansem still tried to convince Riku to join their side even after the rest of the organization gave up on him due to his resistance to darkness
Not even resistance. Young Xehanort straight up says Riku is immune to it. Guy survived being afflicted with so much darkness in KH1, CoM & parts of KH2 that he became immunized lol
Throughout the series in someways Ansem was a mentor to Riku he taught him everything there is about the darkness and it was due to Riku battle with him in COM he was able to conquer and control the darkness with in him. It really showed Ansem was fond of Riku because probably Riku reminded him of himself/Xehanort when he was young. It shows even though he is Xehanort heartless he is his own person the same can be said for Xemnas
there was nothing wrong with richard epcars voice acting, but billy zanes voice just suited ansems look and personality so much more! "SUUBBMIIIIITT!!!"
Three reasons. One, he cost a lot of money and for the relatively small role he had in KH2, Disney didn't think it was worth it. Two, Ansem in KH2 isn't Ansem, it's Riku pretending to be Ansem, so it does kinda make sense for him to sound different. And three, Zane got into a lot of hot water with American acting unions and Hollywood in general after starring in a Turkish film that had some pretty blatant anti-semetic undertones.

He never did, Disney didn't rehire him, apparently because of a controversial movie he made in the early 00's.
