My take: This was a perfectly utilized 13 minutes of screentime. One scene on Destiny Islands very early into the game to set up this mysterious character, and then re-introducing him during the final stretch (Hollow Bastion and End of the World) as the true Big Bad who has been controlling the Heartless and Disney villains from the shadows, awaiting his chance to regain a physical presence and obtain what he believes to be the ultimate power of darkness from Kingdom Hearts. He's an epic villain, made moreso by Billy Zane's epic voice.

It took me so long to realize that Ansem had no physical form until he possessed Riku (thanks for making it convoluted with time travel Dream Drop), I had always thought that he looked like that behind his hood, similar to how O13 members hide themselves, but then you see him speak to Riku, he’s more ghostly than anything, and it’s only after sora folds Riku-Ansem that you finally see his physical form for the first time, because he just transformed Riku’s body to his liking.
