Why did he even bother? Bill has most likely never seen a regeneration before. Heck, she probably didn't even know he could. The Doctor could have just faked him dying and would've got the same result.
Remember when River slapped 11 for using a bit of regeneration energy to mend her broken wrist? She would be so mad at him if she saw him waste 10 times that amount on this prank lol
Eitan True, but even though 12 might have infinite regeneration now (which is probably what he has). He doesn't know that, for all he knows he might be on his last one (but as an audience we know that's not the case)
I don't believe he waisted any though. Because if you think about it. He only brung the regeneration energy to the surface of his skin. However in "The Angels Take Manhattan". The Doctor 'gives' River his regeneration energy so she could heal. Meaning when the Doctor did his little joke of a fake regeneration, he never waisted any by passing it, because when he stopped in the middle of the blast part of the regeneration, it all went back inside him. So yeah, that's my theory anyway. And we all know that The Doctor isn't actually stupid enough to waist 'that much' regeneration energy on a little joke for Bill to believe in.
I absolutely loved this scene. Capaldi’s Doctor is an old man and using some regeneration energy that would shorten another incarnation’s time as part of a prank is definitely something a Time Lord who has lived too long would do. Loved it.
Except we found out later the doctor is special. With Infinite regenerations and early gallafreyans stole this power by using him as experiments. I source the timeless child 2 part episodes.
Bxnkr6l End3r Yeah, because she figured that as long as the Doctor was alive he’d find a way to save them. I don’t think 12 told her about regeneration so she thought he was gonna die from being blind. And if we’re being honest had she NOT made the deal and 12 actually died (let’s say regeneration wasn’t a thing like she thought; actually if he regenerated in their wouldn’t he just keep dying from the poison?) the earth would have been screwed the next invasion anyway (and they are ALWAYS getting invaded).
If 12 had died due to Radiation, 13 would have been able to get out fine. 10 regrew an entire hand, 13 fell to earth and was fine. Regeneration after effects are strong.
I guess Donna was right when she told 10 that the doctor needs a companion to stop him. The companions are Doctor’s insurance policy if he himself goes rogue.
A mid series regeneration is unlikely, it's only happened twice in the show's history. Peter was supposed to leave at the end of S10, but stayed on for Christmas as Steven Moffat was forced to write it. Although I have heard Capaldi was offered half of the next series but turned it down.
10 regenerated on New Year's Day but I guess that is Christmas. 11 and 12 then both regenerated on Christmas Day even though 12 was originally going to go at the end of The Doctor Falls but he didn't unfortunately.
moo it was blanks, if you look carefully when bill shot the gun you can’t see any bullets, also, the Doctor says that that WOULDVE (meaning it could have, but it didn’t) blown a hole in the plan

Doctor: ''yeah'' Bill: ''yeah, nice touch. but what was it?'' Doctor: ''I....never told you about regeneration?'' Bill: ''no? you never tell me anything about yourself. is it important?'' Doctor: ''eh...''
It was because it was so random. It wasn't like 10 when it was a massive cliffhanger and it was what people thought was the penultimate episode of the season. This regeneration was so random and just... 1:21 Acting of a god.
The thing is, 12 knew what he was doing: he's got a whole new cycle, he's got regeneration energy for days. Ten went full-on because, well, he actually was dying (Dalek rays, nasty things.) He used the regen to heal himself and then put the rest into his spare hand. He had no idea it would spawn into a whole other Doctor. I'm not sure what he would have done with it, had the events of Journey's End unfolded without Doctor Donna and Metacrisis Ten and they still succeeded, but he likely had some kind of plan.
@@reliant1701 given how he acted when he was actually dying at the end of Series 10, I believe the Doctor was wasting energy here just for the sake of it. The build up to this scene and first third of this episode is brilliant. Utterly superb. Then this moment happened. The rest of the episode went spiraling out of control. Unfortunately this was just for the trailer. It’s a shame because Pearl Mackie’s performance and Capaldi’s speechless gaze is incredible without the fake regeneration.
I understand there was a need to prove that for the story, yes. And the set up to the moment is beyond superb. However, there was no need for regeneration at all. Bill's never seen it, and she's the one who's meant to believe she's shot the Doctor. After the trigger is pulled there is absolutely no need to fake a regeneration and waste that energy. It was put in as a "tense moment" for fans and completely undermined everything that came after it in this episode.
Connor McRae Actually, no. Had she been under the control of the monks there's no telling what they'd expect. They'd run simulations for God knows how long and could know about regeneration. Had he not, they could have walked in and say "What's up with that?". He needed to be 100% concrete certain this was Bill Potts and not a Monk drone.
I understand your point but disagree. In any case, its out of place, out of tone, and completely unbalances the rest of the episode. Its inclusion is unwarranted, especially in the context that this is a regeneration year, and to give us a fake regeneration in a regeneration year and then resolve it with a simple "oh it was a trick to see if you were under the influence" is unfortunately weak. Look at 1:08. That right there is the worst Capaldi has ever acted in Doctor Who, with his "I've joined the Monks". And I love him; he's my absolute favourite doctor. But you can almost tell that he is not in agreeance with this scripted point. Him. The ultimate fanboy. The one we aspire to be like one day. It's unfortunate.

@@IdiotamSpielen it takes a special kind of arrogance to think that just because someone makes a common complaint that they’re sheep following the herd. But, like the projecting sheep you are, you just read “13th Doctor bad.” Take your condescension somewhere else.
@@IdiotamSpielenthe writing. That’s really it. Because the effects are decent, ofc they are, but unanimously the writing has been criticised. The actors are doing their best (Jodie is a brilliant actress, loved her in Broadchurch) but its the writing. I mean Chibnall wrote Torchwood as well, which turned out fine, but with Doctor Who he went overboard. He changed canon, ruining the entire point of The Doctor and his backstory just for his own indulgence of a fan theory (Timeless Child). Yes there’s redeemable moments, but thats despite the writing. I like 13th Doctor but thats cuz Jodie did her best and she was really wasted.
@@IdiotamSpielenIt's boring as shit. The writing has no subtlety to its messaging. The acting is equivalent to a cbbeez host at times. It's just crap.
I like how this is sorta the same moment as of when Clara tried (and almost did) to destroy all of the TARDIS keys to try and save Danny. As of Bill and her wanting to restore the world.
Yes, it is foreshadowing his end, an end everyone already knew was coming. There are also far better ways to foreshadow his Regeneration. This scene just felt really out of place and awkward, just there to be a big shock in the Series trailer. Just because it's foreshadowing, doesn't make it good.
I'd much rather have used the 4 minutes to flesh out other bits of this story, perhaps expand on Monks and their motives or go towards making a better ending.
Yes, he can... Look at the first two parter of series 9 where he regenerated the Daleks... Or series 7 when he regenerated River's wrist... It's just Moffat completely shiting all over the canon..
why does everyone think he actually wasted regeneration energy doing this???? I thought it was obvious that it was just a trick or a special effect he and nardole had come up with
She was doing the right thing. If The Doctor had joined The Monks, they would’ve been unstoppable, so by killing The Doctor, they would’ve been back to square one.
The soldiers drew their weapons to supposedly protect the Doctor, but the writers hoped the audience would be too distracted by his "death" to realize that none of them fired in retaliation like they would have, had the performance been real.
I loved this scene. The acting was phenomenal, it broke my heart at first Capaldi really made you think he went bad and it was genuinely terrifying The Doctor is always there to save the day but this is how terrifying it is when he’s on the other side. He’s cold and absolute. Whenever he broke the act it was one of the most relieving moment in the entire show.
1. The doctor was testing to see if Bill was working for the monks. 2. He used up regeneration energy, not a full regeneration. He has done this numerous times (The Witch's Familiar, The Angels Take Manhattan, Rise of the Cybermen).
The brooding regeneration music made it feel so real. I went into Capaldi’s seasons blind on purpose so by the time this happened I was on team Capaldi all the way. Tears welled up in my eyes for second and was like “I’M NOT READY!” *whew*
The music in this scene was amazing. Murray Gold even composes masterpieces for fake regenerations. And that's also a big part of what made it believable.
I wish we had more of these fun and funny times with Capaldi. His early adventures weren't the best, but when he started acting like a quirky old man he really became the Doctor.
I feel like if I was the Doctor i would say, “BILL DONT YOU DARE DO THAT, DONT DO IT IM WARNING YOU!!!” REGENERATES “Well that weird plan worked for some odd reason anyway good girl

@@julieeverett7442 The regeneration from Smith to Capaldi started when he was given the energy by the time lords, and ended when he finally changed. Doctor: 🗿
Connor McRae It wasn't for the trailer. It was to prove she wasnt under their influence, especially after she was the one who bargained with them.
Connor McRae The Doctor told her about regeneration in Thin Ice.
I dunno how I feel about this scene I both love and despise it.
Stubby Lad I mainly despise it.
Same here.
I hated it
I love it
Loved
The 12th Doctor really seems to take advantage of the regeneration energy he was given by the Time Lords. First with Davros, now with this.
He has no clue how much he was given. All he knows is it was a LOT. Might as well play around with it.
Me: Shots Doctor in the heart.
Doctor: BLOODY HELL HOW DO YOU ONLY LIVE ON ONE HEART!
IT IS PITIFUL!!!!!!
I love how light-hearted this scene is
Iron Pikachu | I don't think Bill (or half the audience) did
I love how this show can go from tear jerking to side splitting in mere seconds.
The awkward moment when the fake regeneration has better music and CGI than the real one.
AKO675 ?
Music is in no way better than Capaldi’s exit. Shepherd’s Boy is one of Gold’s most triumphant pieces.
Nah just the cgi
The music is equal I think but if the real regen didn't have that music then I would have said that thus music would fit perfectly
The regeneration effect is much better here.
Just finished watching Chibnall’s era. This scene alone contains more emotion and excitement than all three+ seasons combined
@@zui88 yeah like this scene is kinda stupid (bill doesn’t know the doctor can regenerate. What does she think is going on?) but it actually fuckin grips you, unlike chibnall’s entire era
yeah, we get it. Your opinion is replaceable. Do you actually have any good reasoning for it or do you just say what evertyone else does? Like seriously all I ever hear is that the 13th doctor was oh so bad, but I never hear a single word as to what exactly was so bad! Tell me!
@@IdiotamSpielen it takes a special kind of arrogance to think that just because someone makes a common complaint that they’re sheep following the herd. My comment tells you directly what my problem was- that the Chibnall era lacked in emotion and excitement.
I love the color grading, esthetic, and shots in this episode. I love capaldi's hair and suit
Noticed for a while, a blooper, just before the hand glows you hear the hiss of the regeneration,, its usually goes together the sound and the glow
I'll miss Capaldi... *sigh*
Imagine if river was there
"what a waste of regeneration energy!"
*s m a c k*
2:09 ''Your face''
Nardole flips off his finger.. XD
I like how this is sorta the same moment as of when Clara tried (and almost did) to destroy all of the TARDIS keys to try and save Danny. As of Bill and her wanting to restore the world.
Why was this scene even a thing? Oh yeah, trailers...
Yes, it is foreshadowing his end, an end everyone already knew was coming. There are also far better ways to foreshadow his Regeneration. This scene just felt really out of place and awkward, just there to be a big shock in the Series trailer.
Just because it's foreshadowing, doesn't make it good.
Perfect foreshadowing, too. The way Bill shot him in the end.
I'd much rather have used the 4 minutes to flesh out other bits of this story, perhaps expand on Monks and their motives or go towards making a better ending.
The Outcast The Regeneration was unnecessary. And if the Bullet was fake then does that mean Capaldi can make himself create Regeneration energy?
Yes, he can... Look at the first two parter of series 9 where he regenerated the Daleks... Or series 7 when he regenerated River's wrist... It's just Moffat completely shiting all over the canon..
Bill Potts was an absolutely amazing companion, and gone too soon.
Is it odd that Peter Capaldi looks great when he's dying/regenerating?
Probably
Imagine he forgot to stop regenerating and next thing we know Jodie's clapping her hands and shouting "good girl!"
why does everyone think he actually wasted regeneration energy doing this???? I thought it was obvious that it was just a trick or a special effect he and nardole had come up with
1:20 Yo I lost my damn mind when she actually pulled the trigger on him! I don't know of any other companion who would've done that! Badass.
She was doing the right thing. If The Doctor had joined The Monks, they would’ve been unstoppable, so by killing The Doctor, they would’ve been back to square one.
In all fairness I think Amy was on the verge of doing it when questioning the 11th doctor's method when she aimed the gun at him.
@@jinxyjangle you realise he would have just regenerated if the ammo was real, so it was pointless
@@rfspilot If he regenerated he would've gone into Jodie and negated the Monk's brainwashing.
@@jinxyjangle true
Bill Potts : do you know how hard these past couple of months have been ?
Martha Jones: hold my beer
That's when the Doctor knew Bill was among the finest Companions.
This triggered me so much, it made no sense and was absolutely pointless. Does this mean he has used up a regeneration for a prank? 😂😂
Yep, Bill didn't even know what regeneration was. Just trailer bait
Did he actually use one up it can be faked? if he did that to all those people in the room he would be dead by then
@Barbaric Why? because of the regeneration-cycle? they NEVER mentioned, how much regenerations the doctor has left now! that was an idea by BBC ;-)
CJ Bottomley He literally says he was testing if Bill worked for monks.
1. The doctor was testing to see if Bill was working for the monks. 2. He used up regeneration energy, not a full regeneration. He has done this numerous times (The Witch's Familiar, The Angels Take Manhattan, Rise of the Cybermen).
Am I the only one who loved this scene?
No
Yes

@@wx7fm He's the Doctor. He likes making over the top gestures
The Doctor: I have joined the Monks.
Also the Doctor: 'SIKE
The brooding regeneration music made it feel so real. I went into Capaldi’s seasons blind on purpose so by the time this happened I was on team Capaldi all the way. Tears welled up in my eyes for second and was like “I’M NOT READY!”
*whew*
Lol “blind”
The music in this scene was amazing. Murray Gold even composes masterpieces for fake regenerations. And that's also a big part of what made it believable.
2:18 Matt would definitely kiss her
On the forehead
Without consent may I add
This COMPLETE scene is Oscar worthy.
2:55 nice background music; its a variation on one of 11's themes from Series 5-6!
I wish we had more of these fun and funny times with Capaldi. His early adventures weren't the best, but when he started acting like a quirky old man he really became the Doctor.
Bill didn't know about regeneration at this point.
She must have been so confused when the boss music didn't stop after she shot him.
I feel like if I was the Doctor i would say,
“BILL DONT YOU DARE DO THAT, DONT DO IT IM WARNING YOU!!!”
REGENERATES
“Well that weird plan worked for some odd reason anyway good girl
no but we need to talk about how pearl mackie absolutely ate this scene up. why has she not been in more stuff since dr who???
The beginning was really emotional and I love it, I can really feel Bill’s frustration in this scene and it’s really powerful. Except the end kind of ruins it
He had that energy stored up from how short his previous regeneration was
B s a u s a g e 6 4 did you see what he did to that Dalek fleet?
er I think that regeneration was so short due to the huge one he did destroying the daleks, his body was mostly destroyed but he had enough energy to go back to his young state then boom!
@@julieeverett7442 The regeneration from Smith to Capaldi started when he was given the energy by the time lords, and ended when he finally changed. It used to be the longest regeneration cycle shown on screen, at probably around half an hour in-universe, but Capaldi to Whittaker took 2 episodes, which in-universe was around 3 weeks.
yes I am aware
The way The Doctor got shot was so convincing
If only the actual regeneration had looked this good.
The effects for this were better than that of the actual regeneration
I'm surprised there are so many likes, when this is probably the most hated moment in Series 10.
I dunno. I kind of liked it. Nice psych out.
Every moment is the most hated moment of Series 10. It was an abomination even by new who standards.
I don't know. At least it's not "I WILL NOT CHANGE!"
Amaranth
I thought that was genuinely emotional, but each to their own.
Mr. JustAGuyWithALightsaber
It has a few dud episodes like _The Lie of the Land_ and _The Eaters of Light,_ but I'd never label the entire series an "abomination".
The doctor with his quisy valard moments.
It's an absolute crime that we never got a release of this regeneration theme, it could have been fantastic
Still can't help but feel that this was only done for the sake of the trailers
the fake regeneration looked so much better than Capaldi's actual regeneration tbh.
Yeah, this is gonna sound odd, but I don’t like how thin and squiggly the energy beams looked in the actual regeneration. Though I still love that scene.
Capaldi was a fantastic Doctor.
Imagine how insane a twist that would’ve been for a companion to shoot the Doctor forcing him to regenerate
“Everyone exchanged their ammo for blanks!”
“Eh?”
“Your forgot Nathan?”
sorry about that
Nardole: Doctor, I think Bill is going to need a strong drink after this.
I remember watching this and thinking: "Nah this can't be where Capaldi leaves, as a bad guy."
Alternative title: the doctor does a little trolling
This is actually an important moment in Doctor Who in the long run as it shows the Doctor has better control over how much regeneration energy is used before it counts as a full change into the next incarnation.
I think Peter Capaldi's outfit in this clip should be the definitive outfit for Doctor no. 12.
Why did he waste all that regeneration engery?! For a joke..
To convince Bill that he was really the Doctor... By doing something she didn't know he could do?
No, to convince the Doctor that she really was Bill and not at the mercy of the monks propaganda.
He literally says he was testing if Bill worked for monks...
I replied by memory, and then I finished watching the video and realised I was wrong. But still, Bill doesn't know regeneration.
*A N G E R Y*
At first I thought that when this first premiered that he was actually going to regenerate.
"I am gonna beat the Sh...." 🤣🤣🤣
The fake regeneration energy cgi looked better than the actual regeneration cgi
I absolutely love Doctor Falls and Twice Upon a Time, but the CGI was really lacking in both of them.
This three parter in my opinion was the making of Bill as a great companion
