Sick bro!! I just bought and rigged up 6 grip stands with wheels and arms and have been loving them. Just made me think, im already rigging mics and lighting, why not cameras!!
Now I may be crazy, but is that the Sony a6700 with a tamron 17-70 on it? Similar body to the a7c but the ports are in the wrong location, might've thrown me with the cage but I think an old a7c cage would fit if it's based on the same body design?
Super cool ! I don't see how the Small Rig head attaches to the light stand though. My current light stands have a 5/8 rod on top: does the small rig head adapt to that ? Thanks.
This is a fantastic idea! I've actually gone even further and been using a straight mic stand (without boom and with a round 9" in diameter steel base) with a ball head on top for a few years now. It's not super stable but tiny foot print and amazing for a small camera when documenting things in my studio as a B-cam, or for BTS and such. Works insanely well! Cheers
Before I bought C-stands I would boom action cams or small point and cams on a mic stand for overhead shots. Definitely need to sandbag for anything heavier than an action cam but it works.
as a one man in house production guy who sometimes need to do 2/3 camera interview setup - i use light stand and photo head as tripod all the time. I usually use light stand for the wide angle camera that I do no need take care during shooting, and it save tons of weight and bag capacity for me to carry around
Amazing video as ever! Filming weddings I've used light stands over tripods for keeping a lower footprint or getting static angles in smaller rooms, never thought about doing top down videos though. Ace!
Def handy for weddings, we’ve done the same. For a C-cam, will put a GoPro 10-12’ up for a very broad view to cut to while waiting for the action on A/B cams 👍👍
Really cool idea. My only hesitation is the potential flimsy-ness of light stands, even hefty ones. I've got the Impact stand and it remains my favorite. Tip to share, I do use a couple of monopods for smaller lights (one a Falcon Eyes and the Other a very small Aputure). Small footprint and the monopods can collapse down to (almost) table size too.
Thats so funny that i just use this for a concert gig, with a c-stand and a cheap bowl receiver, i was able to setup a manfrotto head and a blackmagic 6k pro, i was so nervous tho, but everything turns really well at the end.
Great vid :) This is a pretty cost-effective solution to a monostand! I'm looking for a monostand for photography currently but this will help in a pinch until then.
Caleb, you might take a look at matte boxes. Some very popular matte boxes are too shallow to be of any use, and others don't even have side flaps. What's a good matte box? the kind that attach to the lens but not to the rods?
I got a Question for u i got a svc 200 ccd camera i want to ad a screen a display only it has no usb hdmi or other modern connections, it however has a female round small hole for pinn connection do you have any idea's or someone else btw the camera is 30 years old.
This is some excellent outside-the-box thinking and problem solving. Also, I bought the e-image tripod you’re showing thanks to your prior review and recommendation … and it is wonderful. Keep up the great work, CP.
Man. It's so funny, when you get a crazy idea and they work so well! I have similar story. overall it's so much nicer then the tripod, but it only work in the studio. great video!
I had user error with that smallrig fluid head. I had the thumbscrew super loose for the horizontal panning, and it made my video super jerky. later on I tightened that thumbscrew and it panned as it should. works extremely well with peak design plate on the bottom and with my peak design travel tripod!
Thanks this is brilliant - just tried it because I have all the bits to do it. This will save me time and money. I shoot drinks in bars and hotels - tip : the Zeapon motorized pan head is a bargain if you need a rotating head for table top or on your sticks or this setup - battery powered so no leads in busy areas. (The model name is Pons motorized pan head)
One of the few RUclipsrs that shows their flubs (7:07). I will never forget the time Caleb yelled, "Holy Balls," when he got feedback screeching from a Field Monitor!
I film/stream events and have been using lights stands for a couple years. Usually C-stands and sometimes regular light stands. I can put PTZ cams or other cams for static shots, up out of the way and take up less space.
Hey Caleb! Nice informative vid xD Quick question, i was thinking of getting the impact rolling stand and was wondering if this stand has air cushioning for drop protection as well? Also looking foward to your table top vid 😁
congratulations, I learn a lot from your videos, they are always full of useful information. A curiosity, may I know the model of the monitor you use installed in the stand?
I have been recently rewatching mythbusters alot of there remote cameras are light stands with magic arms to mount cameras too. Just some food for thought.
*Could ya Do this with a Mono Pod? Like your Tables in the Background I have mine setup the same way almost against the Wall but not Quite Touching, So I guess I could do the same with My desk like you're showing hear just pull it out a bit further from the wall*
I do this, but with the smallrig wall mount ones that fold up. I use them on the ceiling actually. It’s nice, when I’m don’t filming I just lift them up and they are out of the way
I used the Impact one to shoot a concert with it being the camera angle on the conductor from the stage view. Had it up about 10' and it was a GREAT shot! Love the idea!
I was liking this, until you started using the word, 'film'. I do not understand why you would mis-identify your equipment and medium. Not cool. You're not filming. You're shooting. You're recording.
I've worked professionally in film and television for 20 years, and almost everything is digital now, but we will routinely use "film", so your complaint is nonsense.
Is it time to pull out my wallet again? It's time to pull out my wallet again...
😂😂😂😂😂
Sick bro!! I just bought and rigged up 6 grip stands with wheels and arms and have been loving them. Just made me think, im already rigging mics and lighting, why not cameras!!
Just bought the tripod head and baby adapters from your links bro thanks man!!
Ha! Exactly!
I have that Smallrig head that I use mostly on my monopod. It’s very versatile.
great video but i think Tom Buck did this last week.
Just add some ankle weights to the bottom of the stand to improve the stability...
Now I may be crazy, but is that the Sony a6700 with a tamron 17-70 on it? Similar body to the a7c but the ports are in the wrong location, might've thrown me with the cage but I think an old a7c cage would fit if it's based on the same body design?

I used to use one of those for 360 camera footage - such a small nadir footprint!
Before I bought C-stands I would boom action cams or small point and cams on a mic stand for overhead shots. Definitely need to sandbag for anything heavier than an action cam but it works.

Yes on that table top guide! Can’t wait for that video!

Unfortunately Australia’s left with nothing. Anything “kupo” or “impact stands” related gear is either price jacked or unavailable. 5:08
Aw man sorry to hear that!
Genius! 🔥 Def going to utilize this man
This is a brilliant idea! Perfect timing too as absolutely all my light stands are broken. Buy cheap buy twice and all that haha
Thanks Kevin!
Throw a sandbag on it.
Thats so funny that i just use this for a concert gig, with a c-stand and a cheap bowl receiver, i was able to setup a manfrotto head and a blackmagic 6k pro, i was so nervous tho, but everything turns really well at the end.
Oh man I would be too with all the noise and people!
Great vid :) This is a pretty cost-effective solution to a monostand! I'm looking for a monostand for photography currently but this will help in a pinch until then.
LOVE THIS. Thanks mate. Cheers from DownUnder Oi
I just started using my light stand as a tripod as well! But that smallrig head though... (Sigh)... (Pulls out Wallet)
And now that the rig is using spigots, the whole world of light mounts like wall mounts, etc becomes an option!
Agree. Think outside the box! For studio work, c-stands can be the best support out there.
I would like to do it the other way round. Turn a normal tripod into a light stand. Anyone know how to do that?
Your A-roll on this one is soooo dark!! Need to adjust something here.
naisu!
Turn Light Stands "Into" not "Intro" .. .I guess. Just to let you know. Great video! Using "this trick" for years.
Hi Caleb and thanks for your very interresting tips. What diameter (floor) has the IMPACT Rolling Light Stand?
Please make a Sony A6700 review & a A6700 rig setup video!!!
Did you say Tabletop Guide!?!?!? Sign me up. You've got the BEST top downs in the game
I would be curious to see a DJI Ronin 4D setup on a light stand using the DJI Flex cable.

I would like to know more about the "casters or wheels"on the bottom of the video tripod what are they called, and where available?
Bro you can do a review on a napkin and I’ll still watch it💪🏽
Love the lighting in this video! 🔥
Thanks Nate!
yes, but what if ground is not straight flat?
Aren’t light stands too wavy?
I’ve always done this for woodworking and archery videos. There’s not always room in the shop for a tripod, especially for cramped first person shots
Is that the Keychron 95% I see? I love mine!
Hold on, Hold on…
My wallet wants to watch this too 😅
I look Sony A6700 ?
not sure if you can update your title. It has an extra R
This is some excellent outside-the-box thinking and problem solving. Also, I bought the e-image tripod you’re showing thanks to your prior review and recommendation … and it is wonderful. Keep up the great work, CP.
Thanks boss!! Glad to hear you're digging the E-Image. Love those things!

Also one can turn Tripods into light stands. Especially for strobes that use umbrellas & are top heavy

Mic stands work great also. Weighted round base ones are great. You just need to set them on level ground though.
Hey Caleb! Nice informative vid xD Quick question, i was thinking of getting the impact rolling stand and was wondering if this stand has air cushioning for drop protection as well? Also looking foward to your table top vid 😁
This is unrelated to the video, but are you planning on reviewing the Sirui Night Walker lenses?
congratulations, I learn a lot from your videos, they are always full of useful information.
A curiosity, may I know the model of the monitor you use installed in the stand?
Caleb back at it with FRESH content! 🔥
Hey Nate! Thanks bro!
Done that. Here at 2:35 using a 6m light stand😊 ruclips.net/video/yayB2uwMHB4/видео.html
I have been recently rewatching mythbusters alot of there remote cameras are light stands with magic arms to mount cameras too. Just some food for thought.
who else went to location and forgot their tripod and used a light stand? me, but Celed took it to the next level. thank you for this!!!
Always great content Caleb; small thing, but gotta say I love the clean lines and grey tones on the thumbnail 👀✅
Add a small sandbag to the lightstand base: *Safety* and further stability!
Wish I had known this earlier, it would have saved me tons of time. Thank you as always !
Great Idea!! this is awesome for saving space.
Calling the light stand "sticks" takes this to a whole other level.
Cool thinking outside the box!
*Could ya Do this with a Mono Pod? Like your Tables in the Background I have mine setup the same way almost against the Wall but not Quite Touching, So I guess I could do the same with My desk like you're showing hear just pull it out a bit further from the wall*
You could! I just the extra security of the stand legs.
@@dslrvideoshooter cool thanks, I'm try this
sand bags needed!
Yolo!
Can't see anything. Video is way too dark. Maybe try using a light stand for a light instead of a camera. That may explain the 30+ thumbs down.
I do this, but with the smallrig wall mount ones that fold up. I use them on the ceiling actually. It’s nice, when I’m don’t filming I just lift them up and they are out of the way
Great idea!
The thing is, it makes total sense but I never thought about this. I'm sure to use your advice.
THanks!
I love this build videos ❤
Thanks!
Thanks
Thank you for watching!
I’m sorry to say that this has been done on RUclips already
I used the Impact one to shoot a concert with it being the camera angle on the conductor from the stage view. Had it up about 10' and it was a GREAT shot! Love the idea!
thanks Caleb!
You bet!
