I've been doing this song for decades. I always wondered who actually wrote it- but its like "House of the Rising Sun" or "Stack-o-lee"- one of those old folk songs that has been passed down and been around forever. There are many pages written about the song online, but, I originally learned the lyrics off an old Bobby Bland LP way back, but later heard and liked the Louis Armstrong version better [which is closer to what I do]- but I don't even sing what he sang... the lyrics i sing have somehow evolved/devolved over the years of my doing it; but there are many versions of the lyrics... And the crowd cried for more, more!!
Superb!
Huh!
Doug!!! Congratulations! This version is amazing. This is my favourite song. I love all versions of this song (Dave van Ronk, Henry Red Allen, Josh White, Cab Calloway...) I often play its with a guitar, or sometimes with a trumpet player.
Thanks this version!!!
This was once 1 of my all time favorites. Till it was my turn to visit the infirmary. So it has lost some of its luster for me. Still you play it so well. Thank you for the post.
Damn Doug that is smooth--soulful.

Wow! Thank you!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THE WAY YOU TICKLE THOSE IVORYS!!!!!!!!
The letter "e" in Doug's surname is important when searching YTube for other tunes of his.. If you forget the "e" YT will give you Doug Duffy, world Motocross champion.

Give this man a cigar. I've always wondered what that line meant.
awesome
amazing version!!
thank you, Lety!
dude, awesome version. Bloody wish I could play something more jazzy than the violin!
the earliest version i've got of this is Cisco Houston somewhere back in the 40s. great song. dark, gritty, and strangely life-affirming. and as with all good old folk, it has about a million different versions of the lyrics (only a slight exaggeration!)
Good
@WeLoveMarley - "Sweet Man" in the vernacular of the time meant pimp. So it wasn't so much of a love affair as a business arrangement. I've been trying to collect all the copies of this song that I can find, thanks DougDuffey for posting this one, I had no clue about it.
Growing up in Monroe, La I always knew Doug Duffey was an excellent songwriter/singer that had quite a following. Last I heard he was in Europe. BUT being a home-town girl how could I miss the fact Duffey played piano so well (?!) [He always HIRED the piano player]? aah...he was giving back
Super buenooo
good
1991 good year. great job! Hope you are still kickin out the tunes, somewhere. heard you were in Switzerland alps
Late reply- yeah I live between Louisiana and Switzerland.
This song is so classic
So infamous
No one knows its author
He or she died broke....idk but, I'd bet
But look at us now
Attracted
Maybe enticed
At scripts jotted years before us all
Music is best served from the soul
The author, as far as I know, is Joe Primrose, 1929, but could be from another composer.
I went down to st James infirmary. I saw my baby there. she was dressed out on a long white table. so sweet so cold so fair. let her go let her go god bless her. wherever she may be. she will search this whole world over. but shell never.
find another sweet man
like me
Personally, i think it is made up from several old Irish/English folk songs. I did a lot of research about the song, 10+ years back. But, I just put my own version together.
Doug Duffey
Hey Doug i miss you. Haven’t spoke in a bit.
Im working at NASA michoud on a rocket. I bought a korg Krome to get my chops back.

WOAH!
that was really awesome! I wish i could play like you, all i can play is the white stripes version :p hahah
Happy New Year Doug
god !! ^^*
WOW! THAT'S COOL JAZZ!!!
Oh my god. You make the piano sound so smooth and nice. It's such easy listening.
I thought that Cab Calloway was the original composer, but I guess I'll have to look into it more.
there is NO original composer; it's a folk song, handed down for generations, changed to fit whatever times. I learned the 'lyrics' [which i kind added to myself] off a Louis Armstrong record waaaaaay back in the day... Thank you.
Sometimes I wish I played piano
never too late to start
I was a big fan of Jamil Shariff's rendition at Maison Bourbon on Bourbon Street
My favorite version is the one the house guy plays on the leno show.
that's what I call The Song
The traditional version is by Cab Calloway. But this is very cool!
Excuse me, but nobody knows the 'original version', since it's older than dirt. It has been adapted by many artists in it's long and ever evolving history.
@@DougDuffey I have to say that you are right about that. After I commented your video I did some research and found out that the origin of this song is unknown.
But what did you mean by labeling your video as "traditional"? Maybe I just did not understand at first.
