Her "complaints" is what I love about her. She makes the process seem human. It's like we're there with her on her journey and we experienced the ups and downs together. Love ya, girl! ❤️
It's exactly what helped me in my own creative processes! Martina showed me it's normal to have doubts and frustrations but if you keep to it you will finish something very awesome!
The cover designs are fantastic, and the design of the deathly hallows standing out with the bulk of metal leaf and having the dramatic symbol peer through the Hogwarts silhouette is just incredible. Gives it the dramatic flare of a finale.
I think the "complaints" are what makes it more relatable. Everyone who ever worked on a project had that moment where they don't like the outcome or don't wanna do a specific part of it and think about giving up or whatever else. And as a viewer, I think it's reassuring to see that even someone with so many talents and skills still has these moments too
I wanted to comment something like this as well. I'm an artist myself, and whenever I choose to paint something more challenging or time and energy consuming, I end up complaining about it even though simultaneously I'm still sort of enjoying it? I think it's just part of the process to feel frustrated at some points, but it doesn't mean you regret doing it (even if you say so in the moment)
You forgot the part where all of your willpower is used to prevent yourself from throwing the whole project across the room and usually into the wall. Thereby destroying it, even that absolutely perfect part that you adore... (You can so tell who the artists are in all of these comments. They all are saying the same things. Hahaha.😂)
Don't worry about the comments saying you're "complaining"! The things you do are incredibly tedious and time consuming and people just don't understand that since you make these tasks look so effortless! If those commenters were told to create the same things you do, they'd give up by the end of the first day. You're doing hard work and you deserve to complain about it, especially when things don't go the way you expected. Keep making, girl! We love your videos!! :)
I am also thinking if it's something Scandinavia/Nordic countries trait. Well I mean I am Finnish and Finns tend to whine A LOT. Like when she explained that even though she enjoys what she does she kinda complains about some things. But I didn't even recognize it as complaining, to me it seemed like a normal explanation /conversation about a topic. So I dunno if that is just in my head or some weird excuse but just to think out loud.
I'd honestly worry about her if she *didn't* complain. As a crafter, I feel like complaining about the endless drudgery is just part of the creative experience. If you can keep a smile on when you're 4 hours into doing the same repetitive task you're a lunatic. Even if you love doing it.
Complaining is part of the fun of encouraging yourself, and besides if you can't complain then how do you know you put in hard work? I think Your videos are amazing and you should keep doing what makes you happy
The woman has a right to complain. I mean crafts and projects can take time and are very tedious. I’ve done some basic book binding and it’s harder than it looks and oh so time consuming. Anything worth doing and enjoyable is going to take time and patience. So keep going girl you’re inspiring to any crafters who watch you and inspiring to those who support you! 😁
Are people really complaining about her apparently complaining? 🤦 lol. She's just "complaining" in jest. These idiots take trivial things way too seriously. They really need to get a life
Yeah, people who aren't involved in arts/crafts tend to "romanticize" it a lot. Creating is awesome and one of the best things ever, but it also has downsides like anything else. It bothers me to no end when we express a "negative" feeling about it (which is natural to express) only for people tell us we "shouldn't complain" or come at us with some toxic positivity approach :/
@@CelticBotansDigitalArt Or they romanticize the project so much it distorts facts, like how long something can take to make. "What do you mean it will take 10 days to make a necklace, I can order one for $10 and get it in a day." or "I could make that myself, just wanted to help you out by giving you business." Well, okay then, have at it. Like, I hate how long something takes, but I look at it and think "Yea, I made that."
When Martina flipped the cutting mat over and said "The ugly side" I felt SO validated lmao. I have one with a really nice, perfect side, and a side that looks absolutely atrocious! hahaha
I love the clock, it really shows how much time goes into these kinda things! Especially when sections are sped up, ppl often lose track of how time consuming even the first/basic steps are
Those are Absolutely AMAZING! Now, what I really want to do is cover a 3-ring binder in leather, without having to remake the whole cover, if that is even possible. Every tutorial I've seen they break the binder, and remove the hardware and remake a new cover.
Do it the same way she did this here just pick a fabric for the inside aswell. You may need to scuff the material with sandpaper to make sure the glue really sticks 😁👍
Can we all agree that she did an amazing job not only with the covers but doing the artwork for the book cover itself? I would never think of those designs in a thousand lifetimes.
I love the designs you did for the fronts!! Leathercraft stamp tip from my husband: wait for the leather to dry on the surface so just the middle inside is wet! He says it'll take to stamps much easier and you don't need a lot of pressure, so you won't have to go over the stamps again by hand. ❤️ (Surface wetness is what causes the lines to not be crisp or deep, and look swollen. It's called "casing" your leather.)
And - it takes TIME. Leather needs to be wetted thoroughly to take stamps nicely. That takes upwards of 8 hours. Make the leather tripping wet, put it in a plastic bag over night, and before stamping let it dry till the outside is just barely moist.
The “complaints” are what make everything you make more accessible. I know I start to struggle and sometimes quit. Knowing someone that makes all this cool stuff doesn’t just breeze through it and it’s a challenge even with the experience, makes it feel like if I just push through the moments that make me complain I’ll be able to make something cool too.
I've never thought of using an airbrush with leather stain that's incredibly inventive. The overall project is incredibly beautiful and was very fun to watch it come together.
These are absolutely magical! Marvellous work, Martina! And "complaining" is an absolutely crucial part in the creative process. I never complain more than during the process of writing a story.
As a leather crafter, I loved the idea of you laser cut stamping process. You seemed to have issues when clamping, and I think I may have some ideas where it may have gone wrong. Wet moulding and stamping are two different process. The stamping works best if the leather is “cased” first. I would do this process before shaping them. This should be done off the books as the books are compressing when stamped not allowing the leather to take on the impression. Place a hard material like a stone block (marble or similar) under the leather, place the stamp then press or hammer the mould into the leather. Should take fairly quickly. Then shape the leather afterwards to you pieces. Could even be done on fairly thin veg tan leather.
I think some of Neil Gaiman's books would look good getting leather bound, like Stardust and Good Omens. Perhaps other Tolkien books and maybe an omnibus of Narnia?
I totally get the "complaining". I made my daughter a lampshade with owls made of perler beads. Believe me I complained a lot when placing the beads for owl number 50 wishing I never see another bead.. but the end result and her reaction makes it worth it.
Incredible. These look like something Harry and his friends would read, it's like you grabbed the books from Hogwarts and transported them to the real world. It's like the story is coming to life and taking over the entire book, it's practically oozing out. I'd call this upgrading rather than destroying the books :D
These are beautiful, if you’re planning to rebind another series of books, I think the Percy Jackson books are great and I’d love to see your take on them
@@Endersgamejp ah yes! I feel like they - just like Harry Potter - are VERY fitting for leather binding. Kind of matching the feel of the story, ykwim? As if they look like the books you would see on the shelf if you were to dive into that world. While I love Percy Jackson as well, the story doesn't really make me feel the aesthetic of leather bound books
If they add aprons to the merch store that'll finally persuade me to put in an order for that and the cutting mat! I already have the Nerdforge hoodie :D
I'm a leather book maker too and I have been wanting to do this very thing with some of my favorite books too. You captured the magic and sense of wonder and adventure of the stories with your designs. I'm so inspired! 🤗
My favorite part about the design is that it feels like it could actually fitninto the wizarding world. Many books throughout the movies have a similar style, so it can almost be seen as a collection written by a wizard documenting/sharing the life of the boy who lived: the chosen one, Harry Potter. Genius
If you’ll ever take an apprentice, I will MOVE to Norway to attend. There’s no way all that could be squeezed into one video, but you did. Something better than “amazing.” Maybe some magical words that shower you with sparkles and stars (but nothing involving fire or pointy objects). Bravo! Something miraculous occurred. I enjoyed it. Thank you!
I haven’t watched it yet, but when you massacred the lord of the ring book I had my heart in my throat, but now I’m mentally prepared for awesomeness. 🥴
But then they'd be too expensive to mass market. Have you seen how much books like these would cost? TIME Life used to make subscription books like this and they easily cost over $6-700 for just 9-10 volumes.
EXCELLENT! As I am not that artistically gifted, I wouldn't have had the guts! What I would have done was to use paperback editions, and made the hardcovers a new. As the paper back books are 1/3rd of the COST. What would have been done was to multiply and increased the overall value ten fold. I do understand why you used the hard covers! As all 7 books are uniform in height and width, only different in thickness. With the paperbacks there is a variation in size as well not much but still a variation. Yes! They are beautiful now, and appear as a matched set. Yes i would buy them for my grand-children. O But the original hard cover value is gone, especially if they had been 1st additions. Thinking about the collector of the original hardcover book. Can the book be returned and restored to its original condition?
@@danielseverson3173 There no way those book can be returned to their original appearance. But I doubt there's a lot of value gone because those books are no longer in their original condition. First editions aren't per se valuable collectibles. All copies of a book that don't differ from the first printing run are "first editions" from a bibliographical perspective. If you by a hard-cover copy of "the Catcher in the Rye" (which was first published in 1951), you're still buying a first edition, because the typeset was never changed. Copies from the first print are a different thing - those can be pretty valuable, but I'm pretty sure Martina and her boyfriend are too young to have read the novels in English (i.e. not their native language) when they were first published, so it is highly unlikely the books she used were first prints. And that's assuming she didn't buy fresh copies for the project, because those would be easier to work with than copies that sat on a shelf and gather dust for an undefined number of years.
Not gonna lie, I kinda wanna buy an entire run of Discworld paperbacks to do something like this to now. That's a series that truly deserves this kind of treatment.
Great idea! The finish should be slightly aged and distressed, with Orangutan finger (and foot-) prints on them, and a faint aroma of bananas. @Kate: If you enjoy this channel, there is a good chance you'll like the discworld series.
I just gave the hardest side eye to my hardback discworld series XD They’ve been passed down in my family since my great great aunt, so I don’t know if I’d want to take the risk…
Every time I see these leather bounding of books, it makes me want to try it out. How long did it take you to make books almost museum quality? It’s honestly so incredibly satisfying to watch, keep these coming! Love the channel!
I think (and can be wrong) that the "museum quality" was for "art piece that could be shown in a art museum" and not "antiquity that collect dust in a museum". Again, I can be wrong.
I was thinking about doing something similar to my Dungeons and Dragons books. This video has really helped my creative process and educated me on pitfalls I should watch out for.
When you started adding the gold I actually teared up a bit. The Harry Potter series is very close to my heart, and I feel like with the new covers the story comes leaking out on the surface of the books. Very well done, beautiful job.
There really IS something so satisfying about a matching book set like yours! It's absolutely beautiful!! I'd buy this and never ever read it (for fear of creasing the spines) -- I'd just happily treasure it as the beautifully handmade art that they are!

To tackle a project this big creating new covers is a huge patience and undertaking. I can’t wait to see what you would do with the Wheel of Time books in a future episode. Your leather book cover and beautiful detailing would make that series of books look like treasure 💜
I’ve watched old books being rebound on The Repair Shop and have always wanted the Harry Potter books bound in the finest leather, relief and gold embossing, but not until now did I see the craft combined to such a result of near perfection.
I really wish I had the ability to use all of these tools and create such amazing and beautiful works. If I had your workshop, I would never leave and never stop creating. Absolutely breathtaking.
I love how they turned out!!! (This mist have taken weeks to get all seven done) I never liked the colored version and always thougt that they should have been leatherbound :)
You're an INCREDIBLE artist and I love how satisfied and excited you looked when using the air brush technique. Also love how they all came out in the end!
Complaining about a process is a key component to improving the process. When you have a project like your castles, the complaints of the first led directly to improving the process that you used to make the second. This isn't simply whinging, this is identifying areas for process improvement. Keep kicking ass and complaining while you do it! Can't argue with the results!
Seeing the timelapse of her making the leather covers plus with a clock just spinning for hours straight makes me feel like these videos are entierly made from dedication, and lot of time consuming, but it was worth it in the end.
Tbh ignore the people calling you out for complaining. As an artist it motivates me and makes me realize that it's completely normal to lowkey dread the work and be unsure but to trust the process.
These are incredible! Imagine being able to just CREATE something better than anything a book company could ever sell you! 👌👏 Also, people complaining about someone complaining is a silly thing to concern yourself with! Keep being exactly who you are, unapologetically and 100% Martina!
The amount of work and effort put on these books is incredible, and the results are just amazing, I would definitely pay for your creation, I love it!!
BTW, which house are you in? I would say Ravenclaw for your creativity or Hufflepuff for the hard work that you make, but I only saw this video for the moment, let's see if you say it in another one :D
I would pay sooooo much money for those (if I had any of course), they look absolutely awesome! Also, loved your little smirks when you noticed something was working out as you planned it, very relatable.
The time lapse of stain airbrushing was properly gorgeous. Thank you for making beautiful things with such deep character, and letting us all come along.

This is what they should have looked like all along! 😂Stunning! I would buy these and pay well, they are totally a collector’s item! In fact I feel all good books should be made like this.
When someone finds their talent and is able to practice it and share it with the world, it is pure joy. You are a joy to watch. I hope you consider creating your own Skillshare course on bookbinding sometime!
This is such a badass idea! I’m definitely going to attempt this with my personal novels once they go through their 1st printing so I have a unique copy to show off. You always inspire me to give things a shot even if I have no clue what the hell I’m doing, but I just have fun with the process
They look beautiful. The designs on the top add to the magic that the books emerge you in, the images on the front add a hint to what’s in store for the reader and the gold was a brilliant idea.
I know it's silly, but I'm actually impressed (and a little weirded out) by the original covers. They're so colorful! I'm Brazilian, and here the first Harry Potter edition (and most popular till today) is from Rocco, and each book has one prominent color (they have more than one color, but there's always one that dominates the cover). Sorcerer's Stone and Deathly Hallows is yellow, Prisioner of Azkaban and Order of Phoenix is blue, Half Blood Prince and the Goblet of Fire is green and Chamber of Secrets is the only one that's red.
I want to warn people about Skillshare: after the free trial, Skillshare sets you up with the YEARLY plan. So they literally charged me around a hundred for a years subscription. I just don’t forget to cancel.
I also had the same thing happen to me, but as long as you contact them within 3 days (I think it’s 3) explaining your forgot to cancel your subscription they will refund it back to you
I work as an artist and I totally understand that feeling of “what have I gotten myself into?” You can love what you do and still have moments where you realize you might have been over ambitious.
I would say it's an amazing job you did there but that would really be an understatement !!! Both for the project and the video about it (images, music, transitions, ...).
Somebody should do this with Discworld. Imagine combining The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic into one and then styling the cover to look like the Octavo. That would be cool.
@@Simsystwistedmind We could've got 20-30 more at least without the Alzheimers too. Given the hot streak he was on in the early to mid 2000s it's not a stretch to say that his best was still yet to come.
You don't complain. It's that natural stage of creating when you realize the scope of what exactly you've set yourself up for. Love your videos! Thank you for sharing
Quick suggestion with goldleaf and leather: apply the goldleaf before the stamp (on the whole surface) and stamp on top of the goldleaf. The gold will remain in the recesses and will be super crisp.
That was both horrifying and amazing, I almost died when you cut in the books, but my god, you certainly achieved the most beautiful set of HP books I’ve seen. Please make sets to sell 🙏🏻
I don't think it's possible - you have to use glue for goldleaf only in places where you want it to be, the leather have to be wet to stamp on it, and the glue for goldleaf is water-based. Water would make the glue less sticky and it would be one big mess I'm afraid
This is what I always wanted. Since many years I say that I'm hoping they do a leatherbound collection edition. Maybe one day.. I myself never could do what you accomplished in this video. Concrats for this awesome result.

A new NerdForge book build?! Great start to the weekend!! The final result was awesome, love the classic look and the gilded accents are gorgeous. Very fitting for the HP universe! Also, please bring back the zip hoodie! :)
Ah, what a great idea! The books look really great! I can recommend that next time you also design the end paper or buy a special paper, because in the bookbinding world they say that the end paper is like the red curtain in the theater.
I'm wondering what the designers of the original covers were thinking, I mean this looks like a dictionary or some kind of fiscal law encyclopedia that you might have on an office shelf. With all leather and the gold, that's what I would expect these books to look like! :D So pretty! And even if this is far to expensive to make for the masses, they could have at least colored the covers in a less agressive way.
They were thinking these are children's books and kids rarely keep their books in good condition. So they cut costs on book covers that are likely to be handled roughly anyways.
@@dawnchesbro4189 It makes sense to me that they would be made that way. I would expect mostly people 18 and under to make up over 90% of the readers of this series so I wouldn't splurge on the appearance of the books like this. However, since the series became so popular and has cult status, NOW, it would make sense to make a mega special edition version like this. The issue is that these would easily cost $90-100 per book! The only time I bought an extra volume was a black and white paperback of The Deathly Hallows. The cover was illustrated by Mary Grandpre and I thought the artwork was interesting, it looked like something that would be carved in a stone wall somewhere underneath Hogwarts, just waiting to be discovered.
@@dawnchesbro4189 My point was about the colors. Even cheap Donald Duck comic books look good on shelf because of their backs forming some picture. That doesn't have to be the case for the Harry Potter books but at least don't make them look like some color coded encyclopedia! Also there could be an edition of the books with better quality covers that is not targeted at childeren.
You do realise there's probably a hundred versions of the covers, right? I've never even seen these before. This is the set I have: m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71CQXSQnnyL._AC_SX679_.jpg
These are children books; if you want other colours than take the adult version; there are different collectors collection for several hundred euros or buy an ebook. I wouldnt buy these lether books- I dont see a reason for that. If you want a leather cover, buy one at the etsy store et voilà you have your special leather cover. I personally like the looks of the books I have and it is more eco friendly. I am more interested in the content as in the look. I dont buy books for the shelf but for me.

Ideally casing the leather would have e helped with capturing the details of those stamps. Unfortunately due to the method used to make the books it makes it difficult to case the leather. You did an amazing job overcoming this obstacle and the end result is fantastic. Colouring leather is a difficult to master with a sponge or cloth. That fact that you went the air brush was a refreshing approach and a method a lot of people are only just starting to use.

Yes she is and I completely agree. My mother used to make her own books and bookbinding. It can take days to weeks
And yet she took it too well. These toxic trolls don't deserve to watch this channel.
I have one with a really nice, perfect side, and a side that looks absolutely atrocious! hahaha
trouble is i can't flip the mat over without all the clutter flying everywhere.
I'm the same way! LoL!
I should have done that haha I just have two ugly sides

Those are Absolutely AMAZING! Now, what I really want to do is cover a 3-ring binder in leather, without having to remake the whole cover, if that is even possible. Every tutorial I've seen they break the binder, and remove the hardware and remake a new cover.
Do it the same way she did this here just pick a fabric for the inside aswell. You may need to scuff the material with sandpaper to make sure the glue really sticks 😁👍

I love the designs you did for the fronts!! Leathercraft stamp tip from my husband: wait for the leather to dry on the surface so just the middle inside is wet! He says it'll take to stamps much easier and you don't need a lot of pressure, so you won't have to go over the stamps again by hand. ❤️
(Surface wetness is what causes the lines to not be crisp or deep, and look swollen. It's called "casing" your leather.)
Good tip! Thanks for sharing!
Extremely helpful, thank you!!
Was looking through the comments to see if someone already shared this tip 😊
And - it takes TIME.
Leather needs to be wetted thoroughly to take stamps nicely. That takes upwards of 8 hours.
Make the leather tripping wet, put it in a plastic bag over night, and before stamping let it dry till the outside is just barely moist.
I'm loving the visible clock, showing how much time every step actually takes. Also, the books turned out gorgeous, I really love the design.
I’m not a Potterhead, but these look phenomenal. I honestly thought the spines of the original looked ugly as hell.

One of the best hacks I've come across using an airbrush is to turn the leather so you coat all the minor imperfections on the piece.

You could then use gel antique to the surface - allow to dry for a few minutes then buff off to give an aged effect.
I think some of Neil Gaiman's books would look good getting leather bound, like Stardust and Good Omens. Perhaps other Tolkien books and maybe an omnibus of Narnia?

I am 100% going to agree with this

I bet it looked amazing!
It made perfect sense in her newly renovated room with owls on the wallpaper. And she was very happy about it.
Incredible. These look like something Harry and his friends would read, it's like you grabbed the books from Hogwarts and transported them to the real world. It's like the story is coming to life and taking over the entire book, it's practically oozing out. I'd call this upgrading rather than destroying the books :D

My favorite part about the design is that it feels like it could actually fitninto the wizarding world. What you've done is how the harry potter books should originally been done. Looks awesome.
But the original hard cover value is gone, especially if they had been 1st additions.
Thinking about the collector of the original hardcover book.
Can the book be returned and restored to its original condition?
@@largol33t1 Yes! So expensive... it's already really expensive to mass market paperbacks as it is.

Small imperfections in the cover of leather-bound books helps to make them look old and gives individual handmade appearance (which they are).
Quite a labor of love...loving the books themselves and then loving the artistic process.
These turned out great and what elevates them even more is the unique scene on the center of each cover.
I want to warn people about Skillshare: after the free trial, Skillshare sets you up with the YEARLY plan. So they literally charged me around a hundred for a years subscription. I just don’t forget to cancel.
