I don't know all the technicalities but when Avi was making that noise it had the rumble like a vocal fry. And I'll be made a lot of technical sounds and electronic sounds and like I said I don't have a clue about the name is there anything but it did have that fry sound? @@mecfstraveler it was a "Growl" note. It isn't exactly the same as vocal fry. Imagine it as a vocal fry with voice added to it and intonation. Basically the rumble you get when coughing and use just that rumble to lower the note
It’s using fry or growl to achieve an effect. It’s not like subharmonics when it it moves things down below your technical range, but it produces a sound he was trying to achieve.
Kevin has some solo stuff you would probably like. He loops his cello, beatboxing, and vocals to make entire songs as you watch. Search under KO and Kevin Olusola. He also beatboxes and plays cello for a group called Triptych. All the Pentatonix videos are awesome too!

I think Kevin taught them all at least the basics of Beatboxing, but I'm not sure if they've ever swapped parts in actual performances, the way they do semi often with the Bass part (where Scott takes it over for Matt). A better example is Citizen Queen, where their Beatboxer taught one of the other girls to totally take over, because she wanted a few singing parts where there was still a beat.

Great reaction. I love it. I am curious... as a beat boxer do you find it impressive how Kevin can beat box to an entire song and essentially keep time for a live (or recorded) singing group? He does these same things live on stage night after night. I know there may be more technically proficient beat boxers out there but Kevin's consistency and reliability along with his musicality really seem to set him apart. Thanks for the fun!

It's rare to have a reactor focus on the talent of the base and beatbox to this extent. I LOVE it!! Pentatonix is truly my favourite band and I love your perspective
Man, you are incredibly talented. This is the first reaction to a Pentatonix video that I’ve felt like the reactor is talented and educated enough to critically speak about them. Excellent!
Hi! Love your reactions. It's interesting to hear a beatboxers perspective, I think out of all the reactors I've watched over the years, I've only seen one other beatboxer react to PTX. "love again" is an original song by Pentatonix. It's has a more EDM feel, and Kevin and Avi are great in it. Maybe that would be a song to have a look at, if you're interested.
This is the first reaction I've seen by someone with beatboxing skills, and it was great to see and hear your take on what they do. I loved that it seemed as though you couldn't help but "get in on the act" a couple of times. That was great and showed you were really enjoying it. You mentioned how Avi and Kevin played off of one another. If you like hearing them do that you should listen to their cover of Gold. The two of them are insanely tight in that one.
Bro....the bass sound you are doing with the fry is redic clear and strong. Sounds fkn great. Im pretty sure Avi was just singing straight tone, but whatever you are doing with it is sick.
Love your reaction. It’s great to hear everything you notice. I’m a vocal coach but know nothing about beatboxing. Very interesting. Your demonstrations are SICK... lol 🤗
yeah, he has some insane lower registry range. Avi doesn't really use vocal fry or growl, he mainly uses chest. He might have gone to chest-fry at some point, but the tone is clearly coming from a chest. It's just so low that the frequencies might clash with the subtle amplification they do in studio.
The Real Sourc3 the amplification isn’t subtle. There’s a couple recordings of this off-mic and Avi is barely audible on his low b’s, which is fine. But remember he’s a normal low bass, so realistically he should only be able to pump out loud E’s or F’s.
Yeah it's not a vocal fry note. It's a chest voice B1. With a little bit of fry sound to it. But the fry sound is quiet and almost not noticeable, I'm actually surprised Reck even picked up on it. Anyway, for anyone confused, having a little bit of fry sound doesn't mean you're singing a fry note. Otherwise, um, notes like these would also be fry notes: ruclips.net/video/I1-Yl50nCX4/видео.htmlm36s. Notice how you can hear some crackling on many of her sustained high notes? That's fry. Yet she's not singing a "fry note." It's possible to be singing a chest note and just have a fry effect/distortion in your voice. So, yes, it's indeed a *chest voice* B1 from Avi. Also, for the record, when Reck does his B1 (while impersonating Avi), he does what most singers would actually *not* call a "fry"; rather most (knowledgable) singers would call what Reck does a _subharmonic note._ Even when Reck is demonstrating fry in the beginning of the video after hearing Scott do it, Reck is actually doing a _subharmonic note._ It sounds different from what singers would normally call a _fry._ It's the same thing bass singer Geoff Castellucci does to sing many of his super low notes in his _a cappella_ group VoicePlay. For those who aren't familiar here are some other examples of subharmonic singing: ruclips.net/video/AK4LmhMHU8o/видео.htmlm31s, ruclips.net/video/XKLaYGHJoJM/видео.htmlm27s, and here David Kahn starts by doing a vocal fry note but then transitions into doing a subharmonic note: ruclips.net/video/f-4eYJFK87Y/видео.htmlm55s. (I get that what Reck is doing may be called a "fry" in the beatboxing world, I'm just saying in the singing world that's not the term that's generally used for it among knowledgable singers.) In your examples it sounds like you're doing subharmonics rather then vocal fry. It's a technique that basically mixes your voice and vocal fry together to get this cool sounding low note and it's a lot bigger and louder then vocal fry alone. Essentially you sing a note and the subharmonics will bring the note down an octave. When you do this technique if you listen carefully you can hear the original note hiding within the subharmonic note

Actually by using this "vocal fry" youre doing the subharmonic technique thats often used by acapella basses but is really hard to learn. So congratulations that you can do it so smoothly!
The tecnique known as "subharmonic register" or "subharmonic singing" is actually made with M0 mechanism, so with vocal fry. In pulse register, the vocal folds are close but loose, and this lets the air popping through them. But there's another difference with modal voice, that is the vibration cycle: in M1 mechanism, the chords vibrate with a periodic cycle, while in vocal fry they touch each other twice and then they take a short recess; so, they vibrate with an aperiodic cycle. When this aperiodic behaviour become constantly accurate, the chords will produce two notes at the same time: a fundamental and a subharmonic (one octave lower than the first note). This two notes are compatible, and so their overtones add togheter, creating a fundamental with a very clear sound. A recent study has shown than in subharmonic singing the folds don't actually vibrate at different frequencies but with this constantly accurate aperiodic cycle. So, subharmonic singing is just a very accurate vocal fry. For this reason, I prefer calling it "strohbass", also to differentiate it from kargyraa, that is a subharmonic singing tecnique too where the vocal folds vibrate togheter with the false chords. So, I just wanted to tell you that Reck was right when he called it vocal fry.
@@gianlucaranucci_ All true, but Avi did not use vocal fry in this video. That is how low his natural voice is without vocal fry. He is a basso profundo.
I highly recommend you to listen to a capella group Home free. These guys are amazing. Many people says that their beatboxer Adam Rupp is one of the best. And their bass Tim Foust is the best. I want to recommend you to listen to Ring of Fire by Home free ft. Avi Kaplan from PTX. The lowest note is Tim's work.
What's really brilliant about your videos is the extra dimension of of insight you bring to the table. I'd always heard Kevin doing his thing in the background, but a part of me always assumed they put some level of 'production' over the top of his beat-boxing to make it sound like it does - because surely an actual human couldn't REALLY sound THAT good, could they? But you proved it's possible by just... well, doing it, right there in the moment! And it sounded just as amazing as in their video.

Dude you sound so good! Good for you of a man! Pursue your passion because you got the skill! Thank you for analyzing what Kevin is doing because I'm a huge Pentatonix fan but I've NEVER heard any breakdown of Kevin and what HE is actually doing!
@@michaeltaylor5939 Yes, I know.
Whoa!!!! First time on your channel and I am blown away by your abilities and your observations. I am excited to see more of your videos.
Omg WHAAAT!! 7:12 that was awsome! Great video keep going, you are as good as Kevin 💯 btw your dimples are bigger than my head lol, so cool!
This is amazing! And you're right! Kevin deserves more recognition 😊
Avid ..aww hi he's the bass. Kevin beat boxer & percussion.
Actually, he’s singing that bass note with full voice, not actually using a vocal fry or a technique, like a subharmonic technique, all full voice
Damn, you just casually ripped out those beats to demonstrate. You're really good
they recorded this in Avi's kitchen and closet for $400 and won a Grammy for it
dude, i was floored with the example! new subscriber here. Unfortunately this is an old video. Avi is no longer part of Pentatonix and he was replaced by Matt Sallee. Continue with your content. Shoutout from the Philippines!
you are AMAZING!!!! keep up the good work i love it
I love seeing people who do reactions that actual know something about music. You are the first beatboxer I have seen do reactions to PTX. I really enjoy how you try and explain things to the people who don't understand beatboxing. You have a new subscriber here! I am a classically trained lyric soprano.
It’s awesome that you know how to beatbox, you are REALLY good at it!!
Xureck...... there is a quality of mastery watching you react and what looks like mentally processing the beatboxing through a specific filter...... you’re quite the talent yourself!
I life for this moments: Pentavirgins first time. Love it. Made my day! Welcome in the rabbit hole
That's "example" was amazing
Wow. Thanks for breaking that down. I feel Kevin gets overlooked sometimes but if you really listen hard, he's doing so much work.
You're right! Kevin deserves much more recognition
Wow! You are an amazing talent in your own right! Thanks for sharing!🙏
Your beatboxing is amazing, dude.
Great reaction with a bit of entertainment!!! Awesome Beat-Boxing!!! so cool to watch you do it!
I just had to repeat the part where you beatbox for a couple of times. That was so good!!
Welcome to RUclips Reck! You’re extremely talented and you seem like such an amazing person. Sending you positive vibes 🙋♀️🎵🎶🖤❤️
“An example?!” I’m in awe of said example, it was amazing and I’d love to see more 😍🤩
Beastmode man. You rip. Incredibly talented bro
I absolutely LOVE your reactions and your analysis and explanations behind the beat boxing techniques. So glad I found your channel and I look forward to further reactions from you. 🤗👍🥰
I really enjoyed the technical breakdown! Thanks for that. You said you used to be a drummer, looks like you ate the whole set of them before moving on! I will definitely have to check out your stuff.
Beat boxing is so cool. You ought to check out Home Free. THeir cover of 'Man of Constant Sorrow' has some pretty well done beatboxed instruments beyond drums. I think you'd enjoy it.
"that's just an example" BROOO 🔥
Can you do Home Free? You will love Tim Foust vocal fry and growl. Tim also has a 5 octave range. Adam Rupp, their beat boxer, is amazing vocal percussionist.
Where to start... maybe "Do You Hear What I hear" or "Can't Stop the Feeling."
Adam Rupp also does a solo every show (look for one of his recent ones.) He was recently featured in a drumming magazine AS a vocal percussionist!
Dude you sound so good! Good for you of a man! Pursue your passion because you got the skill! Thank you for analyzing what Kevin is doing because I'm a huge Pentatonix fan but I've NEVER heard any breakdown of Kevin and what HE is actually doing! We have people analyze the three main singers but since we don't know about drums and the Art of Beatboxing we're left with what we know and that is that Kevin sounds so freaking amazing and he's so talented! I really appreciate the spin you are bringing because I want to learn about what Kevin is doing instead of just sitting here with my jaw hanging open like an idiot. I'm going to make a request in a separate comment so it's easier to like or not like for people that read it.
on a side note, the absolute love of my life is a classic rock drummer and I appreciate a good drummer. Hearing your personal story about having begun as a drummer and then discovering that your passion lies in beatboxing was really neat to hear! Thank you for sharing that & keep it up because you sound great!
I look over and over again, it shivers !!! This is definitely an argument!
You should react to "Cologne" it's a cover on their new EP "At Home" the beatboxing is insane in that song!
Or.. wait for them to drop the official video of cologne? It's on their recent EP and they're dropping a new official video every Wednesday for each track and there are only six tracks with cologne being, I believe, number 5?
@@mecfstraveler they're not making Cologne music video sadly
You're so right the song is massively 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥
@@raisachaerani7273 😳😳😳 why??? I was waiting for that one!!
@@kaygirly19 i don't know but cologne deserves music video 😔
Dude wtf, your beat boxing is so sick🔥🔥
5:37 that's not fry, that's chest (of course a bit bass boosted)
That’s either chest or sub-harmonic. I don’t know exactly but to hear it you need to turn the bass volume up.
@@windlesstar103 Avi hasn't ever shown a single subharmonic note. He's "the king of low chest"
DANG! You are AMAZING! Your examples of Kevin and Avi are so good!❤
Xureck you did a wonderful job in breaking several parts of this arrangement down from an angle usually ignored. Much obliged.
Always a bit scaeptic when i see beatboxer/ drum teacher/ vocal coach and so on reacts. I need proof and holy shit i got it xD good job man! Some serious talent!
So...I enjoyed the reaction and the dimple . Probably the only reaction from a beatboxer. You have skills! And quite possibly the most awesome head of hair I’ve seen on a human being. 😍
Whoahhhhh. You're so cool dude😁
You're amazingly crazy
7:10 that was excellent
you are a very good beat boxer-i could listen to you more!
Very good analysis. You hear a lot more than most people hear when listening to this video. You delight in the amazing parts that most people aren't aware of.
Love that you speak of the beatboxing from from a point of knowledge, and that you provide examples from your own abilities. Great review.
Thanks.
Another great beatbooxer to check out Adam Rupp of HomeFree. There is a live performance performance video where he does a 'drum solo' that is just amazing!

Home Free: Drum Solo [SPM ST15]
I love this by Pentatonix........but what I loved most about watching this video was watching tour facial reactions during the video!!!! I am a PTX fan.....now I'm a fan of YOU!!!!!!!!
Xureck... you have such amazing talent. I’ve never heard anyone with so much versatility of sound as you. 👍🏼
Thank you so much!! 😁
Dude!!!! You are an amazing beat boxer, just from those little samples! When will you start making your own videos of you beat boxing??? I mean, I already subscribed, but I wanna see you make your own sounds!!
I just discovered your channel. I love Pentatonix....and I have to say, your beatbox skills are amazing too!❤️🇺🇸
You should see little drummer boy, really highlights kevin
I'm really glad I found this. i always feel that other react youtubers always undervalue what Kevin can do because they always focus how great the people who sing are. While you on the other hand can also appreciate the talent behind beat boxing.
Yooooooo you are fireeee sirrrrrrr!!!! Yooo i didnt see that comingggg😂☺❤❤
