After reading through comments, I've seen some people talking about my number of pauses and talking during the video. I recorded this with the mindset of pausing enough to avoid having to blur the video. The first time I tried uploading this it got blocked so I had to add the blur. In terms of pausing, I will always attempt to pause in between sections of a song for the best reaction experience possible. If I talk during the video, it's because whatever I have to say is not worthy enough to pause and interrupt the flow of the reaction. At the end of the day, I am only human and I am still very much new to being a reactor so please be patient with me and I will get better over time. Love all you Pentaholics!
Pause and talk about the video as much as you want, bro. The uninterrupted version is available on PTX's channel. Your viewers should expect your reaction and commentary. That's the point. By the way, props for skipping back 5-10 seconds after pauses so you don't miss anything from the stop-start. You said that Scott and Mitch's voice really work well together: well, you'll be pleased to know that those two had a side project (and youtube channel) called Superfruit for a few years. They have some killer covers/medleys/originals over there. I would suggest reacting to PTX's 90's Dance Medley soon. I think you'd really appreciate that one! They also have an older video where the cover Swedish House Mafia's Save the World/Don't You Worry Child, which I don't see many reactions to -but I think it's very well done.
@@sub4rctic ^^^^^^^^^Yeah, that.^^^^^^^^^^ Pauses are one of the things that can prevent reactions from being taken down. Another (the one I happen to favor) is a watermark that says "Copyright." But this *is* a reaction video, after all. We expect you to react, and that's why we're here, so do what you have to do.
True Pentaholics will tell you to pause and rewind as MUCH AS POSSIBLE 🤩 Do whatever it takes, so it doesnt get blocked, so that we can enjoy the experience with YOU
Not PTX related but if you're really into synths and a wide variety of genres check out Twenty One Pilot! They have a HUGE fan base just like PTX. They are ridiculously talented, dabble in almost every genre.. you will never get bored listening to them, every song has something for everyone to enjoy whether it's just vibing to the beat or getting lost in the lyrics.. For starters react to Ode To Sleep Then Car Radio, Lane Boy, or the live versions from fox theater of holding on to you or Trees They are even BETTER live!! And once you go down the rabbit hole buckle up for an adventure.. all the albums are connected and tell a story and once you're familiar with their songs you can get into some of their reconstructed songs where they strip it down, play around with the beats, tempo, ect.. it's seriously impressive talent, borderline genius.
This won them their 1st Grammy and actually the first ever Grammy for an acapella band! The recorded this in Avi's closet and the budget was $400. I saw them do this live in concert in Sept and it sounded even better live. They are angel aliens!! So much talent! Enjoy the rabbit hole!!
Just imagine. It's 2014. You've just been nominated for a Grammy for your arrangement of a jazz song or movie score. Feeling good, aren't you? So you go and check out the competition in this newly renamed instrumental or a cappella category. And find Daft Punk.
Kirstie and Mitch are the Chameleon’s of the group. Their looks change constantly, but it’s ALWAYS them 🎉❤😅 You are doing GREAT with your PTX reactions! I can’t wait for more 🙌🏼🙌🏼🫶🏻✌🏼 Oh!! And you HAVEN’T seen what Mitch can do ….yet. You will never be prepared 😅 ~Pentaholic from Louisiana
It's always funny watching people try to figure out if it's Kirstin. And nice job TYLR on getting her name right. So many reactors call her Kristin for multiple videos and it drives me bonkers.
Welcome to the Pentaholics family! The REALLY amazing thing about this video is that they did it entirely themselves on a very tight budget, about $400. They recorded it in the closet of the apartment Kevin and Avi were sharing, and they filmed the video in the kitchen. Seriously, there is nothing in this video that isn't them. Their talent is just incredible. Also, I think you're beginning to realize that PTX doesn't do covers. They do upgrades. Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch have been singing together since they were kids. But the whole group are a true family, they love each other and support each other. It's part of what makes them Pentatonix. Did you know that they never perform on Fridays? Kevin is a Seventh Day Adventist and their Sabath is Friday. He's deeply religious and struggled with breaking the Sabath. He told the others that he didn't want to hold them back and that he'd find another beatboxer for them. The other four discussed it and decided that they were okay with never performing on Fridays, what mattered to them was Kevin. I mean, imagine the amount of money they lose by never performing on Fridays. But that's just who they are. Avi left to be with his family, since the touring schedule was so intense. It was amicable though and they still remain a family, one the five have been happy to welcome Matt into. There's never been infighting or drama with these guys. They are honestly decent people who take their art seriously and have fun doing it. So... ''Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Amazing Grace', Kiiara's 'Gold', 'Mary, Did You Know?', John Lennon's 'Imagine' - have a box of tissues on hand for this one. It is literally one of the single best music videos I think I have ever seen. And one of their more recent ones 'Shallow' where you get to hear Kevin play the cello! It's just sublime. They've done some really great collaborations. 'Radioactive' with Lindsey Stirling, and 'Jolene' with Dolly Parton are both incredible. That's barely scratching the surface, you understand. The PTX rabbit hole is a deep one, and we're always thrilled to help guide other people down it.
This song was actually filmed by Fifgen Films. Some of what you see in the video was Fifgens ideas. Doesn't make it any less awesome. Some people believe PTX actually filmed it.
I grew up Seventh-day Adventist. Sabbath, for Adventists, is the same as the Jewish Sabbath, or Saturday. But the beginning and ending of Sabbath is from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. Remember, the system was developed when people didn't have clocks; most people didn't even have sand clocks or water clocks, or see any use for them, so midnight had no particular meaning. Sunset, however, was very obvious, and therefore very easy to use as a marker. When I was a girl, we were required to take a bath on Friday before sunset, so we'd be clean for the Sabbath without having to bathe (a form of work) on the Sabbath (though I recall that my mother made an exception to the rule the time that our dog found a skunk on Friday night and then came inside and rubbed himself all over my brothers while they were in bed). We also had separate toys that we played with only on the Sabbath (so they'd be special) and we never watched television on the Sabbath. Some things have changed since my childhood - the prohibition against bathing on the Sabbath, for instance, was a hold-over from the era when "bathing" meant heating huge pots of water on the stove and pouring them into a portable bath in the kitchen, and it has disappeared. When I was a child and a young woman, Adventists didn't wear jewelry, not even wedding or engagement rings. My late husband bought me a watch when we got engaged and I wore it on my right wrist as a sign to other Adventists that I was engaged. I notice that Kevin wears several rings, and also bead necklaces, but has no piercings, including for earrings. So the prohibition on jewelry has changed, but not too much. But Adventists still keep the Sabbath from sunset Friday through sunset Saturday, and it's against the rules to work on the Sabbath or to ask anyone else to work on the Sabbath. So Adventists will make sure to finish the grocery shopping on Friday before sunset, and will make sure they have gas in their cars before sunset Friday, so they don't have to go shopping on the Sabbath and cause someone else to work that day (never mind that they're already working on the Sabbath - that's up to them - but they won't have to work on the Sabbath because *_I_* asked them to, so there!). And before you get the wrong idea, as a general rule Adventists are incredibly sane people. My mother taught me, for instance, that it's a good thing to periodically reexamine your beliefs, and adjust them as needed if you find that they don't match with reality. There are a few Adventist fanatics, of course - all religions have *some* - but Adventists tend to be very tolerant, loving people, and Kevin seems to fall into that category. I've seen homophobia among Adventists, for instance, but there's been less and less of it as evidence mounts that being gay is *not* a "choice" and that homosexuality occurs among animals, too, which increases the likelihood that there's a biological basis for it. And it's incredibly obvious that Kevin isn't homophobic.
I can’t wait to go on this Pentatonix journey with you! We Pentaholics live vicariously through reactors discovering their brilliance. They truly are masters at their craft and it’s 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
As a music producer, you will be aware of the tricks which can be added to a song in mix, you NEED to watch the "Private Performance" of this to see that PTX can not only do it live, they don't need anything more than balancing. This private performance is just them stood at the front of the room. Recorded on a mobile device. RAW talent.
If you love Scott and Mitch together, you will need to dive down the rabbit hole of their side project called Superfruit. I don’t even have the words to express how fun, excellent and mind-blowing they are in their creativity and talent… Super reaction by the way 😁
Just for the record, this cover won the Grammy for best production and was completed in one week on a budget of $400, using Avi Kaplan's closet as their sound booth.
Kirstie, Mitch and Scott have been friends since they were kids. They have been singing together through musical theater productions and through school and their own group they called The Trio. The know each other's voices inside and out, backward and forward.
This was the first PTX song I ever experienced. I just sat for a minute with my mouth open, stunned tears and joy of a child at Christmas. I never get tired of hearing this song even through a 20 minute reaction. Just kidding, I enjoy watching people get that same look of wonder, and appreciation.
PENTAHOLICS ARE VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT THEIR MUSIC. EVERY SONG THEY DO IS IMPROVED. THEY WON THEIR GRAMMY FOR THIS VIDEO. KIRSTY IS THE ONLY FEMALE IN THE GROUP. LOVE A CAPELLA, ALTHOUGH THEY SLIP IN A CELLO IN A FEW OF THEIR SONGS, LIKE "SHALLOW" AND "SAY SOMETHING" SO BEAUTIFUL. LOVE YOUR REACTION AND LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT REACTIONS. BILLY BOY
As one reactor put it…they are masters at getting out of each others way…you can hear everyone! You’ve gotta hear their cover of Gold, replacing like a gazillion dollars of electronics with 5 voices…lol…I’m getting excited for you😂
Yes! It's impressive that they are both great at blending and providing background buy also take center stage and stand out! Those are two very different skills!
Kirsty and Mitch always change their looks up but it's always them! Kevin is the beatboxer. This video cost them around 400 dollars to make and they filmed it in Avi's kitchen as their venue let them down. This won them their first Grammy and they actually created a category for them! In my opinion this is the best a cappella arrangement ever made. You can see how irritated the blue contact lenses made their eyes - particularly Avi's. Kevin couldn't take them so they gave him the glasses!
I'd suggest the evolution of Michael Jackson, either the official video or from the Pop Spring Concert (hell, react to the whole Pop Spring, it's 3 original songs and the evo of MJ), to show what they can do live!
Yup..please do the concert: PopSpring 2016. It's about 20 minutes long, but we Pentaholics don't mind that. It's filmed and hosted by MTV, so audio and video are really good quality.
Great reaction! Kirstie and Mitch's looks change all the time. Because of that, some people think the members have changed, but their vocals NEVER change, they just get better. Yes....their vocals are very complementary. The only change in 11 years is when Matt came on board as the bass when Avi left in 2017. Kevin is the beat boxer. Not all a cappella groups allow all members to have solos. They are talented when it comes to knowing which singer will sing which part perfectly...you are so right. They don't fight for those parts either. They consider each other family, and just like family, they have their disagreements, but they also have a ton of love and respect for one another.
Mitch, Scott, and Kirsten pretty much grew up together. They found Avi through a friend of a friend and Kevin through his RUclips videos where he was cello boxing (playing cello while beatboxing) and joined together for The Sing-Off competition, which they won. Mitch and Kirstie change their looks a lot through the years. I don't know why people say they're chameleons as they definitely do not blend into the backgrounds but shine brighter with each look. Scott and Mitch formed their own duo a few years ago called Superfruit. You should definitely check out that channel, even though they haven't posted in a long time due to their extremely busy schedules. Loving your enthusiasm and appreciation of Pentatonix and each of the members. Looking forward to seeing more reactions!
Medley recommend: Evolution of Michael Jackson for starters. Christmas songs: O Come All Ye Faithful, Mary Did You Know, Little Drummer Boy...this list could get very long. What type of music do you prefer? Let us know. If you cover Pentatonix, you will have a jump in views and subscribers. Thank you 😊.
Pentatonix won their first Grammy for "Daft-Punk" . Kevin is the beatboxer, Matt is the new bass singer that replaced Avi. There is so much more of Pentatonix to listen to. They do not do covers, they do enhancements. They put their PTX spin to every song they perform. Check out their 90's Dance Medley. BTW 'Tis the season to begin reacting to Pentatonix's Christmas music. When was the last time you danced to "O Come All Ye Faithful" or "Joy to the World"? They can take an instrumental such as "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy" and "Carol of the Bells" and do it a cappella.
When you addressed how well they all blend together and play off of one another, you pretty much nailed the secret to their success. These folks are masters of teamwork, every one of them constantly aware of dynamics (when to lay back and when to shine). Tony Banks of Genesis once said “We serve the song, not ourselves”. PTX apparently live and breathe that same philosophy when it comes to putting arrangements together. It doesn’t matter if you’re taking the lead or backing the lead: Every single member’s perfectionist approach to their own part is a crucial element toward serving the song properly. Thanks for yet another great reaction, bro. Can’t wait to see your take on “Hallelujah”. (P.S.- Don’t worry if you cry a little. We Pentaholics will certainly understand. We’ve been there, too.🤘🏾)
Agreed. This is everything I would say if I didn't have to one-finger type it all out on my tablet. Or just tl;dr everything they do is in service to the song.
You picked up on a couple of things that makes PTX so wonderful. Despite having 5 world-class performers there are no egos. They do what's best for the song. The other is that before PTX, acapella groups either mostly sang choir style or there were one or two lead vocals. Here you can have any one of them take the lead and they often do even in the same song. Keep the reviews coming. Try Can't Hold Us and the sing off season 3 to see the birth of PTX.
If you ever find yourself wondering if it's Mitch/Kirstie then the answer will be yes, yes it is; the two of them do change their looks a lot. As others have said, very much recommend Love Again (original). And also Gold (Kiiara cover), for some Mitch slaps. And if you want to see more goofy fun from Mitch & Scott then check out Sup3rfruit, which was their side project (sadly they don't upload to it any more but there's still so much good stuff on there) from vlogs and skits to music covers & medleys (Beyonce, Lady GaGa, Taylor Swift, and the excellent Hip Hop Goes Broadway 1 + 2, etc), and they have a full album of original music, it's the more adult version of PTX lol. You might also enjoy Mitch's solo project under the name Messer, (his first song was Love Supply, there's also Machine, Angel's Pray & a few others), which is a more synthesised sound.
this was fairly early on in theiir journey, so it was before they had big budgets for anything. the audio for this was recorded in a closet and the video shot in Avi and Kevins kitchen. the budget was around $400-500 and it ended up winning them their first Grammy Award.
Love your enthusiasm. Ignore the complaints about stopping and talking. Most of us are here for the joy of watching a newbie find and starting to share our obssession!.
Watching your excitement is really great. I love specifics you decide to draw attention to. For a beautiful five part harmony, I suggest you watch "Run to You" the original song Avi referred to in the outro. Thank you for going on this journey.
I am so enjoying your introduction to PTX! And we are a very supportive community, so welcome. I think they excel at listening to one another, which is key, of course. Peace from Ohio …
If you really want to hear Mitch do his high notes and Avi's low notes that blew several speakers out watch Aha - Singapore. It's a fan made video so no copyright issues.
Since you're a music producer, I think you might enjoy watching this latest video from Avi Kaplan - "When I'm a Fool", this version of which was filmed at the legendary Sunset Sound in LA. Watch for the man in black playing the black Gibson SG. That's Shooter Jennings, who produced Avi's entire 11-song, all-original album "Floating on a Dream", which has been called a masterpiece that crosses styles and genres. The musicians in this video are some of the best in LA, and they all get into a mini jam session toward the end. (Avi's is a whole new rabbit hole for you, as he has nearing 50 solo songs he's produced since leaving PTX.) ruclips.net/video/LE24UTH3pmQ/видео.html
Yes please!! Avi is my fave period! But I love them all! You can’t go wrong! I agree you should check out Avi’s independent work! They’re so chill and you’ll be singing them in your head hours later! Not poppy or anything, more folk music and amazing! Great job!! Can’t wait to see more!
I think you have a great understanding of who they are as artists which is pretty remarkable this early in. They’re on tour starting this Thursday in Oakland. Look and see if they have a show near you.
I enjoyed this so much! I’ve seen this video dozens of times, but I learned some edm and daft punk things I’d never known before. Really looking forward to where the rabbit hole takes you next 😊
Another song where Mitch goes very high, and where they showcase their voices only (no lyrics), is “The dance of the sugar plum fairy” 😊 Enjoy. They have soooo many good ones. I really love “Mary did you know”, and I also love how they convey the message of “Imagine”. You have a lot of treats to look forward to 😊
if you want to hear them crush it live react to their private performance of this, no mics just them in a room. as for the next one i recomend bohemian rhapsody for another mitchslap or hallelujah
Since you're a music producer you might enjoy their behind the scenes video recording of their Christmas Album last year called Evergreen? It shows how they work and record in a studio setting! It's very good but very long so most reactors cover it in 2 parts 😊
Watch Havana, you will see the blending of voices yet can still hear each one individually. I tell people they should start where they got THEIR start and watch The Sing Off season 3. You will see their growth and how insanely talented they are. Welcome to the world of Pentaholics!
One of the things I love about Pentatonix is that the main focus is the musical piece, second is trying to make sure every member gets a part where the focus is on them. Another band I greatly respect for the same reasons is Rush. Even in the live performances, the mix is so evenly balanced that you can easily discern each performers contribution separately, while enjoying the whole.
Please try Avi's solo music like Change on the Rise, b/w video of I'm only getting started. 7 layer songs and live at Sunset Sound are all amazing. Totally different Avi but awesome.
This was very early in their career, before they were signed to a recording contract. The band formed in 2011, and they released this video in Dec 2013. There were signed by Sony in 2014 and won their Grammy (Best Arrangement, instrumental or a cappella) in Jan 2015.
To get a good background of Pentatonix, I highly recommend you watch their performances on the A Capella singing competition called The Sing Off. This is literally where they formed the Pentatonix. Scott, Mitch, and Kirsten when to the same school. To be on the Sing Off they needed a group of 5. So found Avi, and Kevin, just before the show started.
I definitely agree. Once you're hooked on them The Sing Off journey is great to have towards the beginning of the rabbit hole.🥰 Besides, it helps to enjoy it with the "original pentaholic" before people start making you wonder "what's up with the🍖&🥔s comments " 🤣😉
Welcome to Pentatonix. At this point, they have a rather extensive catalog, so you will always have something cool to react to any time you want another Pentatonix hit. You talked about how well they worked together and covered each other, so I'll give you a stumper. They like to do songs where each one has a part to sing. Who fills in on bass when the bass sings the main part? Think about that a while and then watch their The Sound of Silence cover.
Yes, you correctly identified Avi (you even pronounced his name correctly - congratulations!). He seems to have had some trouble with the contacts, judging by the redness in his eyes. (Kevin, the beatboxer, couldn't handle them at all, hence the visor he was wearing.) You also correctly identified Kirstin, and pronounced her name correctly. The mnemonic is that she's also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty. As for Kirstin's looks, well, in this video she's obviously wearing a blue wig and some extreme makeup. But beyond that, this was their first Grammy so that would make it what, 2013? 2014? So Kirstie was 21 or 22 years old in this. (We tend to refer to Pentatonix at this time as "Babytonix.") Kirstin is now, in 2022, 30 years old, and a new mother. (Elliana Violet, Evie for short, was born on June 28th. Mother and daughter are both doing well.) Kirstie's figure is more mature now. She's had surgery that I believe repaired some nerve damage in her upper lip, so her smile has changed - it's no longer the half-smile we remember. And she's *always* had frequent changes to her hair color and style. Mitch also frequently changes his hair color and style, and his weight tends to be variable. This will sometimes confuse people; they think they see someone new in the group when it's really Kirstin or Mitch. To be clear, Avi is the *only* member of Pentatonix who has ever left the group, and Matt is the only new member, replacing Avi as the bass. Regarding the way Pentatonix makes sure that each member has time in the spotlight, there are a couple of things you should remember. First, the trio (Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch, so-called because they did in fact have a trio in high school with the unimaginative name of "The Trio") are childhood friends. They remain very dear to each other. And as they've added new members to Pentatonix, Avi, Kevin, and now Matt, those new members have also become dear to them. Think of Pentatonix as a family of choice and you won't be far off. (And yes, they *do* have other families outside of Pentatonix, hence Kirstin's new baby and Scott's recent engagement, just to mention two.) But beyond that, Pentatonix has only five members. Consider what that means for a band. If one member has a bad cold, the performance suffers - it's not like someone else can fill in. Anything that hurts one of them, hurts all of them. And conversely, anything that benefits one of them benefits all of them. So every time someone gets Mitch-slapped, that same person is also hearing some beautiful harmonies around Mitch, and thinking "Wow! Listen to that angelic voice! And those harmonies? How do they *do* that?!" and the same applies when they hear Avi's low notes, or Scott's baritone, or notice Kevin's percussion or how wonderful Kirstin sounds. And these little moments in the spotlight bolster the confidence of the individual, making that individual feel more secure in the group and therefore more ready to share whatever insights he or she may have about the next song they're working on. It's a darn good system, and it's been working for Pentatonix for 11 years now. Every member of Pentatonix is incredibly talented, and Pentatonix itself is greater than the sum of its parts. And Pentatonix knows it.
I know this is late: Daft Punk in the early 2000s had a series of music videos where it was a blue alien band singing their songs. So I think that's most of the inspiration for the outfits. Kevin has got the Daft Punk robot look they usually they do. But sadly, Daft Punk is broken up now
Yes, it's Kirstie. Avi Kaplan left...and the new bass is Matt Sallee. I've been a Pentaholic since 2012. Mitch is a counter-tenor. He's just amazing. This video won a Grammy.
I had to subscribe….I love your reactions! Well, I don’t know a thing about KPop but I have been around a lot of PTX? 😂 All the way back to when they won the Sing-Off, yes you will eventually be going back that far. Scott, Mitch and Kirsten were only 19 years old? From Arlington, TX and singing together basically their entire lives? They have a wonderful story of how this all happened….how Kevin and Avi joined the group….Avi left and now we have Matt! Wait until Kevin plays his cello beautifully and when with PTX plays cello and beatboxes at the same time? You have a lot to experience with them and I can’t wait to see your reactions. And they can do all of this live too. Just incredible! T ❤️
The answer to the question “Is that Kirstie/Mitch?” is “Yes!” Always. Thanks for subbing to PTX and you got my sub too. Thanks for posting. Keep them coming.
There is a video of Mitch imitating marker squeak. There is a fan recorded video of them doing this. It is a private performance. No effects at all and still astoundingly good.
you mentioned mitch and scott sounding good together and yep mitch and scott are a power duo, they have a youtube channel called superfruit with comedy skits, vlogs, and the occasional cover. oh and also a full no skip album with music videos for each song lol, they are so good together
Actually, the reason that Kevin is wearing the visor is that the blue contacts irritated his eyes so badly that he could not function. You can actually see how red Avi's eyes are during the performance. And Avi Kaplan has actually blown out speakers during live performances.
Shhhhh…I’m going to tell you a secret… There are a group of people who watch reaction videos that can get assist you in expanding your RUclips channel immensely! They are the folks who are fans of Pentatonix aka PTX (Pentaholics,) who, using a high school analogy are the “Popular Kids.” Then there is Home Free (Home Fries,) who are the kids having a kegger in the back 80!! And last, but certainly not least, is, Voiceplay (Voiceplayers,) who are the Theater Kids to the core!! This is THE TRIFECTA of A Cappella!! If you spread them equally through your reactions, you will go VERY far!!! P.S. They aren’t in competition and several have collaborated throughout the years.
PTX are something else. Their talent is almost inhuman. Like literally, they can remix themselves. They can make themselves 'skip' as if being played by a DJ.
Hi Dude - Kirstin is awesome - (of course all members are super good singers) - but Kirstin, man oh man. She can not only sing and perform fantastic - she also looks sooo damn good. I spontaneously fell in love with her, especially when she lifts the corners of her mouth sideways. Man, I'm going crazy...
You mentioned the simplicity of the video and what they were using, I believe I read somewhere that this was filmed in Avi''s kitchen and recorded in a closet. I'm sure other pentaholics can clarify that.
This was their first release & was filmed in a closet...a testament to their creativity. Check out Kevin Olusola's solo stuff, he's amazing. Highly recommend Down.
There's that Mitch-slap 😂 20 min video for a 4 min track... That's a great reaction! 😊 I'm definitely here for your thoughts and reaction, as a music producer. It brings another dimension to how I listen to them. So ramble away! Yes, Kirstie and Mitch change their look regularly... New reactors often get confused, but yes the bass is the only member that had changed. Lol
There's only one female in the group (Kirsten / Kirsty...sounds like thirsty) and she's one of the original members. 🙂 All the members of the group have multiple singing ranges. There's video of them singing this song live at a private concert not using any type of mic and they sound like this recording.🤩
Yep! Mitch has the highest male singing voice, called a "countertenor". Which actually works well with Avi's voice because Avi's on the other end of the scale, a "basso profundo", the lowest male voice. Since we've got Christmas coming up, a good example of the two of them singing "together" (I mean, they're all singing together, but Avi and Mitch are mostly in the front for this one) you might want to hear their live performance of Silent Night that they sang in the hallway of an old German church. Being a medieval church, the acoustics are GORGEOUS.
One reason why they're so good at replicating songs that most people would just rely on computers to accomplish is their vocal dexterity. It's hard to describe, but a good example of it is their cover of Kiiara's "Gold", that they do totally on their own, while Kiiara relied on looping. It's just mesmerizing to watch, especially Mitch. That man is just superhuman. I saw one reactor guessing that maybe PTX had some clever edits in this song, but no. They do this song live and from what I've heard from people who've attended concerts, it doesn't sound any different.
I’m very impressed with what you know. You’ve properly pronounced names. Beat boxer-Kevin, new bass-Matt. I personally like your rambling, for now..😉 also, keep it short 😂 it’s 22 min, which by the way I like. Everyone else will fill you in on them. There are some things you should know. Try to ignore the trolls, they will come. Be YOU and those who enjoy will stay. Those who don’t can move on, there is only like a gazillion reactors out there. If they don’t want you to pause, they can go watch the official video. We come to enjoy YOU discovering them. Most of us can see the videos with our eyes closed, so don’t worry too much about what you might have to do to tweak it. I personally can’t stand slicing it up I’d rather have no video. 😏 Although I think sometimes that it is actually RUclips. See you on the next Pentatonix video. I’m on a PTX binge right now, so no new music for the moment. 👋🏼
Pentatonix and their friend, Ben Bram (the guy who filmed, mixed, edited etc) won their first Grammys for this one! Ben has been with them from the very beginning. Oh, the beatboxer is Kevin! You almost got them all and that's impressive!
Ben didnt film, that was a company called fifgen! He does arranging and producing. He did help with sound at concert and film some other of their early stuff but not this one.
@@hernameispekka_Rebecca Oh really? Never heard that before and it's been a long time since this video was created. I feel bad that they never get mentioned and didn't get a Grammy too. Is it always that way for a music video? The people who film it don't get any recognition? Thx for the info! 😊
Adding my voice for Love Again. IMO, it's better at pretty much everything than this was. And this was so good it changed the definition of a Grammy Category And one of the really interesting things that I think you hit on that really puts PTX on a different tier is that almost everything that's being sung at a given moment could be done by more than one person. Which means almost every note, they can make a choice for a certain voice style.
I recommend sometime checking out Scott and Mitch’s side project, Superfruit! They have an amazing original album and a lot of other fun videos and vlogs ❤
Mitch - tenor/counter tenor Kirstie - mezzo soprano Scott - bass baritone/lyric baritone Avi - bass/bass baritone Kevin - beat box/tenor/cello Matt - new bass/bass baritone.
I went down pretty far on comments, but didn't see anyone mention that they met for the first time and sang together just for a competitive TV show. Someday, if you fall down that rabbit hole, you may look up that video of the Sing-Off and see how young and unconditioned they were (the majority were JUST out of high school). A lot of mentions of 'The Evolution of..." series and I fully support it. They have a TON of Christmas music and it's getting close to that time.... Also, keep in mind their arrangements highlight keeping the original song true to itself while still making it acapella, so when they sing songs from other countries, they go out of their way to learn how to pronounce the song in its original language. They've sung in Korean, Latin, Spanish, Japanese, French, and maybe more I might have missed. Never apologize for being a reactor, you're a musician first and break down the details you notice, which makes perfect sense. This is why people are tuning in to hear what you have to say. Good luck!
Just remember if your ever ask Is that Kirstie or Mitch? The answer is always YES! Matt is the current bass (not new-he's now been with PTX as long as Avi was) and the band is as great as ever! Welcome!
Just wait till you hear the effects Mitch can make his voice on Bohemian Rhapsody! It's a Mitch slap twice! Someone must have said, but they did this on a $500.00 budget in a CLOSET with a ring light in Avi's apartment! Won their first Grammy for it. Great reaction. I love seeing folks discovering them for the first time.
Check out their Bohemian Rhapsody - be prepared to be blown away! I'm so glad you joined the world of the Pentaholics! The beatboxer is Kevin. This won them their first Emmy and they filmed it in their closet for $200!!
Yeah, they are an amazing group of people. Each one of them has a prodigious talent! Because everyone is blown away by their singing, Kevin often gets left out a bit, which is a shame, because he is the structure the others need to be able to shine as much as they always do! He is an absolutely amazing, jaw dropping talent! Of course he also sings beautifully, but his talent as a beat boxer is honestly unbelievable!
In case no one has said, Mitch is a counter-tenor and yes he can hit higher notes than most female vocalists. Check out SuperFruit (Scott and Mitch) and their version of Defying Gravity.
You do an amazing job reacting to the videos and analyzing them! Its your channel! Pause whenever you want and feel the need to! You're never gonna make everyone happy! Do what is best for you! Keep up the great work!
You should listen to the live version of this. Please be aware that both Kirsty and Mitch always change up there look. Only Avi has left. Matt is the new base.
A real Mitch slap is Carol of the Bells - more commonly known as "Breathe Mitch!" My favorite is their live performance of it at their Christmas With the Stars - a BYU concert in maybe 2019? There are actually a lot of great Christmas songs from that concert. One of their recent ones is the live performance of Joyful, Joyful.
Kirstin and Mitch are original members and still are. When you go down the PTX 'Rabbit Hole' always remember when you ask 'Is that Kirstin or Mitch?' The Answer Is Always Yes...
In my opinion, one of the things that sets them apart from other vocal groups is that they don't just have five people who sing different parts, but they all have such broad, overlapping ranges that they can effectively HARMONIZE at just about anywhere on the scale.
@@sub4rctic ^^^^^^^^^Yeah, that.^^^^^^^^^^
Pauses are one of the things that can prevent reactions from being taken down. Another (the one I happen to favor) is a watermark that says "Copyright." But this *is* a reaction video, after all. We expect you to react, and that's why we're here, so do what you have to do.
True Pentaholics will tell you to pause and rewind as MUCH AS POSSIBLE 🤩
Do whatever it takes, so it doesnt get blocked, so that we can enjoy the experience with YOU
Not PTX related but if you're really into synths and a wide variety of genres check out Twenty One Pilot! They have a HUGE fan base just like PTX. They are ridiculously talented, dabble in almost every genre.. you will never get bored listening to them, every song has something for everyone to enjoy whether it's just vibing to the beat or getting lost in the lyrics..
For starters react to Ode To Sleep
Then Car Radio, Lane Boy, or the live versions from fox theater of holding on to you or Trees
They are even BETTER live!! And once you go down the rabbit hole buckle up for an adventure.. all the albums are connected and tell a story and once you're familiar with their songs you can get into some of their reconstructed songs where they strip it down, play around with the beats, tempo, ect.. it's seriously impressive talent, borderline genius.
"I don't want to make this a 15 minute video"😂
Surprise 💃💃💃
This won them their 1st Grammy and actually the first ever Grammy for an acapella band! The recorded this in Avi's closet and the budget was $400. I saw them do this live in concert in Sept and it sounded even better live. They are angel aliens!! So much talent! Enjoy the rabbit hole!!
You’re just scratching the surface, but I can tell we have created ANOTHER PENTAHOLIC!!!! BWAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAA😱
Welcome to the family!!!! We welcome any and everyone into the Pentaholic fam
Always. There are few people who can resist, and i am related to them, lol.
Their looks change constantly, but it’s ALWAYS them 🎉❤😅
You are doing GREAT with your PTX reactions! I can’t wait for more 🙌🏼🙌🏼🫶🏻✌🏼
Oh!! And you HAVEN’T seen what Mitch can do ….yet. You will never be prepared 😅
~Pentaholic from Louisiana
I can't wait for when he's far enough to do the Singapore concert. That's gonna be a good time.
@@jerolddavis YESSS!! That will be a fun reaction, I’m sure 😂🫶🏻
RAW talent.
The kings and queen of the mashup. Started with the Sing Off when they won the 3rd season. Their arrangements are ridiculous.
If you love Scott and Mitch together, you will need to dive down the rabbit hole of their side project called Superfruit. I don’t even have the words to express how fun, excellent and mind-blowing they are in their creativity and talent… Super reaction by the way 😁
Lol scott and Mitch’s voices work well together 😂 who’s gonna tell him about Superfruit 😂😂
Are we going to send him down that rabbithole already??? Maybe give him a bit of time to get used ti the group before he gets tossed down that one!🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Mitch-slapped!!!! Lol
Just for the record, this cover won the Grammy for best production and was completed in one week on a budget of $400, using Avi Kaplan's closet as their sound booth.
Best arrangement, instrumental or a cappella.
@@akinpaws and the recording academy added the ' a cappella' to the award title so they could be eligible
BILLY BOY
They won their *first* Grammy for this arrangement. They now have three
@@UserHorologium Correct. I failed to mention that. Their first Grammy. Thank you
As one reactor put it…they are masters at getting out of each others way…you can hear everyone!
You’ve gotta hear their cover of Gold, replacing like a gazillion dollars of electronics with 5 voices…lol…I’m getting excited for you😂
Yes! It's impressive that they are both great at blending and providing background buy also take center stage and stand out! Those are two very different skills!
Pentaholics are as awesome as the group. Welcome to the world of Pentatonix bro.
Pentaholic here!! Welcome to the rabbit hole!! You are gonna love it! And Christmas is coming and they rule Christmas! 💞
I think you would enjoy their 90's Dance Medley. For a great mashup of 2 songs try New Rules X Are You That Somebody, or Butter X Dynamite.
That's Christmas To Me is almost never mentioned, and it makes me sad. I love that song and it's original.
Yeah, we Pentaholics are pretty rabid! LOL I love seeing new reactors discover their talent and "magic!"
Yeah, this is about 9 years old. Kevin and Avi were a very good song writing team. Ben Bram touches up everything to make it polished.
We’ve been there, too.🤘🏾)
This!
Agreed. This is everything I would say if I didn't have to one-finger type it all out on my tablet. Or just tl;dr everything they do is in service to the song.
You have to react to their original Love Again if you’re EDM!!! How it wasn’t played in clubs is beyond me!!
Glad to see you back with us! You may enjoy La La Latch and 90’s Dance Medley. Look forward to more reactions. Best wishes from Tennessee 😊🇺🇸
Oh mannnnnn I really think you should dive into the superfruit rabbit hole which is Scott and Mitch’s side project. SO GOOD
this was fairly early on in theiir journey, so it was before they had big budgets for anything.
the audio for this was recorded in a closet and the video shot in Avi and Kevins kitchen. the budget was around $400-500 and it ended up winning them their first Grammy Award.
Kevin couldn't handle the contacts
You say you like Scott and Mitch's voices together, so you'll want to check out their side project, Superfruit! Great reaction!
Need to check out their 90s dance medley its amazing!!!
Great suggestion! That video is amazing!!
I agree Avi is a great artist and worth a dive into his solo work!
YESSS! Great recommendation 🤩🤩
He's done Sound of Silence. Hallelujah would normally be next, but with so many choices, who knows!!
@@Gwennedd oh my god I completely forgot I Thought he had done hallelujah instead of sound if silence I’m so dumb thank you for telling me
@@brunettealesoda please don't depreciate yourself like that. You're not dumb at all!
Once you're hooked on them The Sing Off journey is great to have towards the beginning of the rabbit hole.🥰
Besides, it helps to enjoy it with the "original pentaholic" before people start making you wonder "what's up with the🍖&🥔s comments " 🤣😉
@@reneeg9406 😂😂😂 You got *that* right! 😂😂😂
If you want to hear Mitch going to high notes check out Can you feel the love tonight
(Kevin, the beatboxer, couldn't handle them at all, hence the visor he was wearing.)
You also correctly identified Kirstin, and pronounced her name correctly.
Recommend the 90’s Dance Medley! It’s excellent.
Great to see you react, gave me an excuse to watch daft punk again 🆒️ 😊
To help you remember the beatboxer's name, just think of it like you got KOd🤣 Kevin Olusola ❤
The human 808🥰
I’m excited to find a reactor at the beginning of this journey. Thanks. Can’t wait for the next one.
you mentioned mitch and scott sounding good together and yep mitch and scott are a power duo, they have a youtube channel called superfruit with comedy skits, vlogs, and the occasional cover. oh and also a full no skip album with music videos for each song lol, they are so good together
PTX is the pinnacle of a cappella, this is their first Grammy for the arrangement
It was recorded in a closet in Avi and Kevin's apartment and filmed in their kitchen for $400. Hey fellow Pentaholic 👋
This was their first release & was filmed in a closet...a testament to their creativity. Check out Kevin Olusola's solo stuff, he's amazing. Highly recommend Down.
There's that Mitch-slap 😂
20 min video for a 4 min track... That's a great reaction! 😊
I'm definitely here for your thoughts and reaction, as a music producer. It brings another dimension to how I listen to them. So ramble away!
Yes, Kirstie and Mitch change their look regularly... New reactors often get confused, but yes the bass is the only member that had changed. Lol
To hear Mitch (a natural born countertenor) and Scott blend, check out "The Prayer".
There's only one female in the group (Kirsten / Kirsty...sounds like thirsty) and she's one of the original members. 🙂
All the members of the group have multiple singing ranges.
@@mecfstraveler Well, the grammy was for the arrangement and not the video. They have two grammys for arrangements and one for performance.
If you really listen when Avi is singing Television, you can hear Kirstie singing Around the World.
Adding my voice for Love Again. IMO, it's better at pretty much everything than this was. And this was so good it changed the definition of a Grammy Category
And one of the really interesting things that I think you hit on that really puts PTX on a different tier is that almost everything that's being sung at a given moment could be done by more than one person. Which means almost every note, they can make a choice for a certain voice style.
Love Again, Popspring 2016, Amazing Grace….. anything you choose will be your favorite until you hear another one. 🔥💜
him: i dont want to make this a 15 minute video
also him: *makes a 20 minute video*
I recommend sometime checking out Scott and Mitch’s side project, Superfruit! They have an amazing original album and a lot of other fun videos and vlogs ❤
Did you enjoy your first Mitch slap LOL 😂 Great reaction!!!
Mitch - tenor/counter tenor
Kirstie - mezzo soprano
Scott - bass baritone/lyric baritone
Avi - bass/bass baritone
Kevin - beat box/tenor/cello
Matt - new bass/bass baritone.
Mitch Grassi's voice spans 6 octaves and 1 tone, from A1 to B7.
Kevin Olusola - KO - will knock your socks off, within the group and solo
Love your reactions to PTX!
They do this Daft punk live at the Hollywood Bowl 2022 recently you can watch it on Miles Reuben Chanel.
Have you seen the new behind the scenes making of prayers for the world? Just saw it. So cute
@@bonnieflynn4798 haven't seen that yet. Looking forward to it
Kirstin and Mitch are original members and still are.
When you go down the PTX 'Rabbit Hole' always remember when you ask 'Is that Kirstin or Mitch?'
The Answer Is Always Yes...
In my opinion, one of the things that sets them apart from other vocal groups is that they don't just have five people who sing different parts, but they all have such broad, overlapping ranges that they can effectively HARMONIZE at just about anywhere on the scale.
