  • Old drill press restoration upgrade, I take my 1940 Walker Turner drill press and update it with a 1hp 3 phase motor, VFD for variable speed, and also add a digital tachometer and a LED work light. It's a old tool restoration!
    Here's a link to Amazon for the VFD to control the speed of a 1HP 3 phase motor amzn.to/2ALLLYZ
    Here's a Link to the 8 to 24 volt tachometer amzn.to/2VTysP6
    Here's a link to the small LED light I used on my drill press amzn.to/2STh2jv
    If your planning on running the light from the same 12 volt power supply that your tach is on you will need this 6 to 24 volt buck down to 5 volt power supply amzn.to/2t6e9ko
    One thing to note is the tach runs off of 8 to 24DC volts and the light runs on 5 volts USB power but comes with a 120 volt wall adapter.
    Now back to the drill, I repainted it and repacked the spindle bearings while I was in there. It was a fun project that has refreshed this old machine and I should get many more years out of it!

    Ok, this is the best old drill press restoration video I've seen. Why ? I don't need to see how to remove rust. Or paint.
    But I DO want to see swapping out a 1 phase motor for a 3 phase and adding a VFD.
    Great, excellent job. My 1953 Atlas 1425 drill press will be better because of you.

    • @Mikefestiva
      @Mikefestiva  5 лет назад

      Thanks for checking out my project! Yes I ordered mine on Amazon prime, it had great reviews and after getting it I can see why. I have installed some VFDs at my work and the ones with the digital displays are kind of a pain to setup and get all the settings right, this one was extremely easy to set up and I feel it was well worth paying a little more for a quality VFD. Keep in mind this VFD is designed to power a 1/8 to 1hp 3 phase motor. I’m planning on doing these same mods to my milling machine in the future, I’m going 3 hp on that one so I’m going to need a bigger VFD for that project. Have you been Milling much this winter? I have only ran my sawmill a little bit, but I’m thinking of firing it up soon, the weather has been extremely mild in the Northwest this winter, no snow and it’s been fairly warm. Take care!

  • @jd70HJ19

    I installed a tachometer on my 120 3/4 hp Aico 14 inch swing heavy duty bench drill press ..but chose the Digital LED Tachometer, Icstation RPM Speed Meter AC 110V 220V Digital Motor Tachometer with Hall Proximity Switch version from Amazon which requires no low voltage transformer , used the light work circuit to power it , works well. I also set mine up with a momentary foot operated switch as well as a conventional on /off toggle .The nice thing about adding a heavy duty shrouded foot switch is that you can do immediate stops for any reason at all if necessary . The three phase package that mike did is nice and above all simplified versus other approaches , the controller is especially worth its price.
    The three phase variable may be my next upgrade, but so far the fixed speeds at which it mine operates seem more than adequate ..for the materials I drill occasionally on it . Cost for this conversion is not the issue, since quality used 3 phase motors are very much still "obtainiumable " still however needed or not I might do it anyway .
    Great video, well explained in detail , nice job 👏👏👏👏👏

      Joeak74 Thanks for checking out my drill press video! That’s great your running a VFD from the same company, it really seems well built! What kind of lathe do you have? I have a 3 phase 3 hp lathe it’s from the mid 1980s from Overseas, it can spin 14”X 40” it works good for my needs but I’m sure lathe snobs would turn there nose up at it Haha
      About the thumbs down, I’m sure I have a faithful disgruntled subscriber! With in a few hours of posting any new video he will make a point to thumbs down every video I post, people are strange, I noticed this started about a year ago. But hey he clicks on every one of them so that still probably helps my videos.
      Ps I ran the Omnipro last week on a welding job and it was awesome! I did a test where I ran it on 1/4” plate steel at 155 amps and welding 4 inch long beads for 15 minuets continues, only pausing to move to the next weld, no over temping! This week the Titanium will be getting the same test.

    Excellent video thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have a 40's era Walker Turner, my style is to keep the patina of age on my old machines and this begs the question: Can I use a VFD on the original motor of my Walker Turner?

      @Mikefestiva  5 лет назад

      Thanks for checking out my video and commenting, I appreciate it! Yes I do like the old patina of these tools, and thought about leaving the paint old but decided to freshen it up. That’s great you have a old Walker Turner drill press too! They have definitely faired well considering the age of these machines. So the original motor on my drill press was single phase and single phase motors can’t be controlled by a VFD, that’s why I had to convert it to 3 phase.
      I hope this helps :) take care

    Hey Mike, thanks for sharing! When you demonstrated the finished product, I didn't see you running the drill outside of the "normal" range you'd get from a stock woodworking press. Ive seen countless videos on variable speed motors for vintage drill presses but for the life of me, no one shows EXACTLY how to CONNECT the motor being used and which controller to get for a given motor. I have a vintage band saw sitting in storge for years because it's confusing as hell trying to make sense of speed controllers. you would think that someone like grainger would have available a motor and controller sold as a kit with simple wiring instructions and with, say, 3 or 4 motor HP versions.

      I would do a little research on the web about your make and model to see if anyone has posted the bearing sizes on RUclips or a tool forum.If you can’t find that info I would probably just pull it apart if it’s really bad and look over the bearings, they should have a size on them and I bet they will be very common. If there is no size then take a set of calipers and check the measurements of the bearing ID,OD and thickness, for instance a #1616 bearing is 1/2”ID 1.1/8” OD 3/8” thick.look up bearing charts on line and you will find the size it is. The last part of a bearing # 1616-2RS has rubber seals on both sides, or 1616-ZZ has metal seals on both sides so don’t worry as much about the -RS or the -ZZ. I hope this info helps

      You can take the bearings out and take them to your local bearing supplier and they should be able to hook you up with new bearings

      The bearings have numbers. Get them from Amazon. I have a 1425 I'm restoring. Good luck.

    Why use a three phase motor on a single phase 110V application? Wouldn't it be simpler to add a variable speed controller to a single phase universal motor?

    • @Mikefestiva
      @Mikefestiva  4 года назад +2

      Eric Killorin You have a lot more control over 3 phase, I can run this on 120V or 240V you have full variable speed and you can control the the direction.
      A universal motor has brushes tends to run at higher speeds and are fairly noisy. But if you plan to use one on your drill press more power to you 👍

      @@Mikefestiva Thanks for the clarification. I'm looking at 110V treadmill motors and controllers but, in the end, I'd go with whatever setup gets the job done. Can an industrial 3 phase motor be adapted as per your instructions for the purposes of running a 110V drill press at variable speeds?

      Eric Killorin I would go with the treadmill motor and controller, they can be bought it second hand stores for about $15 and I think they will work just fine on a drill press 👍

    Does that speed controller control a single phase AC motor?

    • @cablemanagement1524
      @cablemanagement1524 Год назад

      it can only run three phase, but there are speed controllers out there that can run single-phase motors, i think. it's easy to alter the speed of a three-phase motor, you can just change the input frequency. but it's difficult for single phase because of the capacitors involved sadly :/

      @@cablemanagement1524 Is the capacitor still required for a single phase motor? I mean, you can soft start the motor and get rid of the capacitor isn't?

    • @Farm_fab
      @Farm_fab Год назад

      @@done-damned the capacitor is required for the motor to start, then when it's running, flyweights on the armature cut the starter of and the motor continues to run.

    I have a question for you! From everything I’ve read if you want to go from one single phase to three phase USING A VFD, which I’m not sure that’s what you’re doing, but you are adding a VFD for your three phase motor that is extremely old. So how can your motor be VFD compatible???

    • @Mikefestiva

      Did you watch the entire video? I’m not using the original motor. I installed a 3 phase motor with a VFD.
