Torbin took the death juice not out of guilt, he was sexually assaulted by an old hag in a mountain as a kid as well as abused by his master that put him to labor all day every day for months without even saying why or what he's even looking for. Just to then nag and berate him when he expresses that he wants a reason for all the work he's been doing as well as missing the comfort of home. ( where he would have someone else to interact with other than the very master that seems dedicated to nag everyone she comes in contact with as exemplified by her interactions with squid game ).
I would go as far as to say that he is one of the people who suffer the most on this show. Second only to the viewer.

Ironically the writers in the Acolyte have created a servicable analogy for male grape in Torbin. @@chazzitz-wh4ly In the context of the story, he (Tomlin) has no real motivations that are either explicitly stated or shown to us (he wants to go back to Corusant).
After ep7 and 8, Tomlin has done nothing wrong to have swallowed the poison or even want forgiveness... The story told so far / up to the last ep (8) - it all rests on mostly Master Squid Game and some on Master Trinity (the escalation & resulting death of the Lesb. Witches - which was unfortunate but as Ploots & many others pointed out, what did the LSWitches expect?!). Unless the mind gRape power has long-term effects, hence Kilnaka (wookie jedi) hiding out & acting all bizzare? That sounds like lazy writing.
From a meta perspecive, *we know why Tomlin has to die. Has to do with his "skin care" and his dangly bits... Can we just be honest?*
This story was clearly the product of Leslie Headlamp's OCs from fanfiction, some poor tabletop games/campaigns (not sure if D&D fitted with a Star Wars supplement, homebrew, or the actual Star Wars D20 rulebooks which do or did exist, I remember them in '08), and a mishmash of ideas that don't quite fit.
It makes little to no sense. Tomlin did nothing wrong. If I had to guess, he was an NPC / GM boss character in Leslie Headlamp's tabletop game at one point.
      *Interesting tidbit:*
I forget where I heard this (8BitEric, Hypnotic, somewhere else online I've heard this?) but someone said (an alleged friend of Headlamp's) about awhile or so ago (perhaps not so long, as recent as the TFA premiere) Headlamp wasn't pozzed and she was like you or I; A True Fan, but then because she wanted to "make it" in the biz, she embraced those things.
I repeat, *Jedi Master Tomlin did nothing wrong.* There is no sense of conflict in The Acolyte and in modern writing in general. It sucks.

There's no evidence at all that the X-Wings scanning capabilities are in any way, shape or form exceptional, innovative or extraordinary. It's a fighter. And not even a particularly advanced fighter. The idea that it would have sensors superior to a Jedi ship (which likely would've been cutting-edge at the time because Jedi) even 120 years older is insanity to me. Especially in a galaxy that had practically stagnated technology-wise. There's nothing to indicate that there has been a large advancement in sensor technology in the time between The Acolyte and ESB.

I mean, not really? Like, contrary to what a lot of writers think, the Dark Side isn't some "cool darkness" that can be used for good or to turn you into a badass, it just gives you the path for the laziest life path: being a selfish dick. Maul was an angry monster, Vader would burn the galaxy in empirical rule just for his circle of loved ones, Tyrannus somehow thought that a horrific galactic war was justified by a _possibly_ better world, and Palpatine was a manipulator who cared for nobody but himself.
If the Jedi are like minimalist monks with too rigid limits on deviation, then the Sith are the school shooters of the galaxy.
Nobody who turns to the Dark Side can really be looked up to or envied. Or if they are, then the writer (and/or audience) utterly failed to get Lucas' point: that anyone willfully using evil for their problems is really just a sad, pathetic loner who deludes themselves into thinking that gaining power by backstabbing other people somehow equates to achieving true contented happiness.

Same as the witches who gave themselves strokes mindjacking a wookie, same as Ma Weave “letting Osha go” by speaking antagonistically at all opportunities and trying to bodily kill one of her children in front of an on-edge Jedi, same as Ma Horns abusing her child AND starting the fight in the first place because “I’d rather die than lose them” only to run away and let everyone else die, and Mae deserves double callout for being a stupid brat playing with matches after breaking the only door out of the fort (so everyone was gonna die anyway). I have a theory that might explain the seemingly random and rapid changes in motivation of the characters in this thing. It could be that they are using the method espoused by Luke Rhinehart in his book “The Dice Man” in which the protagonist literally rolls a dice for every decision he makes and goes along with the outcome of the roll, whatever it is. Of course, the viability of this theory is dependent on the proposition that Leslie Headcase has read a book, so.

What was insane to me was that I had no idea where they were going after this episode. So it made me even more shocked and angry (I didn't even think I could still get angry at Star Wars, those OG and games have a tight hold on my soul apparently) when the 'climax' of the show was 'tricking' Saul into revealing that he killed one of her mums and then letting himself be strangled.
The entire time I was shouting "HE WAS LITERALLY SAVING YOUR SISTER'S LIFE YOU UNGRATEFUL BRAT!" at the screen.
I also wish a Star Wars show would make it more obvious that using the force on another force user is *hard*, and especially anything to do with the mind. I can even buy that a Padawan can keep from being possessed if he knows it's coming, but a master who wasn't aware can got if not careful.
What annoys me about Kel'naka's fight here, is it is literally the *perfect* opportunity to show that. Saul and the Padawan should be so *badly* overmatched in close combat that it should be a joke, but the entire time you should be able to see Kel'naka stopping his attacks and 'fighting' against control, going to rip someone in half, then tossing them away so he can't actually do that. And then Saul and the Padawan switch to using force powers because although a Jedi would normally block them fairly easily, his concentration is elsewhere and he can't right now.
*Then* Trinity can come in and maybe not even try to bring him to the ground, maybe just trust Kel'naka with a "My old friend isn't so weak at to let others control his mind." trying to show a bit of character history, then put a hand up to the side of his head and give a remark about helping him clear his mind before all the witches fall down dead like we see in the show.

I also thought the Jedi Wookie should have been resisting the witches' control, instead of being a complete puppet.

The way they were making a big deal about Osha putting on the cortosis helmet at the end of episode 6, I honestly thought the writers would be cool enough to pull out "Squid Game used your untrained power to warp your memories."
By putting on the helmet it severs his connection to the cantrip he was using to keep the false memories in place (and also his tracking beacon connection to her), and so episode 7 would be the true memories he'd manipulated to make himself look good and more of a reason for Osha to side with Smilo...but I forgot they were Acolyte writers for a brief moment.

There is, yet again, more than the germ of a good idea for Torbin's motivations here. Torbin's bored _because what the Jedi are doing on Brendok feels unimportant._ The only major clue we're given about Torbin's background is that he was born a peasant; it's possible depending on how old he was when he was discovered by the Jedi that he has some fleeting memories of this extreme poverty, and perhaps like Anakin, he sees his duty as a Jedi to help the poor and downtrodden like his family...which is why he balks at the idea of playing in the dirt on some backwater planet outside the Republic. If what the Witch had manipulated was Torbin's desire to be special, to be a hero, that would have been a powerful motivator for him to kidnap Osha, especially if the show had actually acknowledged the Prophecy of the Chosen One: Torbin may believe Osha is that Chosen One and would see finding her as enough for him to get the clout he needs to pass the Trials and become a Knight so he can help the Galaxy as he sees fit.
Torbin also should've been the one to kill the witches, not Indara, and we _definitely_ should've dealt with the consequences of her basically doing nothing while her apprentice was violated. Torbin could've seen what was happening to the Wookie (who I'm not looking up how to spell the name of), seen his Master again doing _nothing_ to help his fellow Jedi (I'd have made the Wookie a Knight, not a Master; only Indara should be a Master since this is her show and it doesn't make sense narratively for Sol to be one when Indara spends so much time talking down to him), and taken matters into his own hands. Whether Torbin is wrong at this point is up to the audience, but it would at least give him a believable amount of guilt to feel when the _child of his abuser comes along later to make him feel bad he killed his abuser, her mother._ That's still an unforgivably disgusting take for the show to act like is somehow justified but looking at who wrote this and who it's aimed at I'm not at all surprised.
