  • The final episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi debuted on Disney Plus this week. Every one of its best moments was stolen, while the rest was a re-hash of earlier instalments - proving there was never a reason for this show to exist to begin with.

    Also, why does nobody point out the issue with how the Light and Dark side work here? Obi-Wan gains a huge boost of Force power when he thinks about how important Leia is to him, while Sidious says Vader becomes weak because of his hate and obsession towards Obi-Wan and should let it go. What the hell? I mean don't the Jedi train to distance themselves from their personal attachments to attain greater affinity with the Light side? And don't the Sith gain more power from their feelings of hate and resentment? Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think Disney totally forgot how the Light and Dark side should work in Star Wars...

    • @BDraftProductions
      @BDraftProductions 2 года назад +9

      No it's just that Star Wars never really set firm rules for itself and the fans have always been more intricate and consistent with the story than the creator and writers. But to your point, Luke's attachment to his father and Vader's attachment to his son are what turned him back from the dark side just as his attachment to his mother and padme drove him to the dark. I think this is why fans were wrong about being pissed that Luke tossed the lightsaber in TLJ; Luke realized the Jedi were always wrong and their arrogance led them to being blind to the dark side being among them the whole time. Balance between attachment and detachment is what was needed.

    • @Perehraad
      @Perehraad 2 года назад +18

      @@BDraftProductions Well I'm certainly not an expert on the subject and you do have a point that the rules are not set in a firm way - far from it. But I don't think the Light and Dark side are polar opposites and turning from one means turning to the other. Vader acting on his "good" side shouldn't mean he turned to the Light side. I don't know much lore about force ghosts but I believe it is not established that only Light side practitioners can attain it. And if we suppose that Luke did have a realization that the balance between attachment and detachment is the way to go, then I still don't get why throwing away the lightsaber was the natural course of action. He should have been quite attached to the sword and it was also a very useful item. If we wnat to go down this route then this shows 100% detachment if anything. Instead, I think the movie (TLJ) wanted to show us how Luke simply failed at reviving the Jedi order and lost faith in himself after screwing up horribly with his nephew, so he went into exile as a form of atonement but also because of his deep shame, and finally turned into your everyday gumpy, pessimistic old grandpa. But if you saw an enlightened old Luke, strong with his conviction in attaining the truth and having a higher perspective, then I might really have to rewatch TLJ...

      You're exactly right...at this point Vader should be absolutely trashing Obi-Wan in a duel. In Vader's eyes, Obi-Wan is the only reason he is now suffering inside that suit 24/7. To Vader, Obi-Wan is the only reason why Padmé is dead. To Vader, Obi-Wan defied him a pretty decent shot at killing Sidious and ruling the Galaxy himself. Vader positively LOATHES Obi-Wan at this point. He is a traitor and a saboteur, and he seemingly left him to rot on Mustafar for no reason. The feelings of anger and hatred towards his former friend & Master should channel EXTREME Dark Side powers into him, but we get this display of an emotionally unstable teenager finally mustering up the courage to talk back to his parents from Vader.
      It made sense that Anakin was scared, confused and in deep turmoil on Mustafar. But years later, Vader has cemented his position as one of the six Dark Lords of the Sith, the Emperor's Iron Fist. They essentially just carbon copied their duel on Mustafar without the weight, tension and set-up. Clown fiesta.

    I’m convinced they don’t hire bad writers. They hire “yes man” writers, those who are willing to give up the need to write something artistic and engaging and will say yes to whatever the executives need. We need baby leia to be the central character to set up our Teen Leia spinoff series. We need random ass Reva to occupy at least half the run time of every episode and not die at the end because we need to sell a spinoff. We need to have Hadyn Vader for the marketing. We can’t feature Owen too much because he doesn’t check enough woke boxes. The people who write for Marvel and Star Wars now have to accept that taking the job means you’re a commercial writer, not a creative writer. Any writer who adamantly disagreed with any of these caveats either wouldn’t have taken the job or would’ve been let go early on.

Still, even if they had their arteries replaced with mechanized versions it wouldn’t be able to deflect lightsaber blows would it? Reva, in this case, would still need an extra set of aorta to keep her blood pressure up or most of her vital organs would shut down. On the other hand, I believe that the grand inquisitor would have survived if he got immediate aid which I assume he did since he didn’t immediately chase after Obi Wan.

I rolled my eyes when Beru "takes charge," in part because her plan is wrong (running away is the best course of action against a Sith), secondly that she magically knows when Reva will attack, and lastly, that Owen--who has always been shown to be the more authority figure in that house--has a deer in headlights look on his face. Leaving Vader broke canon beyond repair. The entire point of the OT was that Luke needed to be trained because Obi-Wan and Yoda failed to kill the greatest evil in the galaxy and it was his job to right their wrongs and bring light back again. But now that's not the point of the OT. Obi could've prevented the destruction of Alderaan, the death of billions at the hands of Vader, maybe giving the last of the jedi a fighting chance against the emperor who held no apprentice, and hence, the need for Luke and to wait almost 15 years for the Empire to fall wouldn't have been necessary. Now Luke had to train, millions more had to die, the rebellion had to be formed, all because obi wan was a fucking pussy who didn't have the balls to kill his friend WHO HE CLAIMS WAS DEAD at the end of their fight. This is where The Little Platoon is being disingenuous. He seems to want to avoid being lumped in with these other creators by proposing a "better" criticism of these "strong wamen" by ignoring the nuance of the criticism.
      The "strong female character" trope is not a criticism levied at all female protagonists or other female characters. No one is saying this of Sarah Conner. The criticism itself implicitly only applies to those female characters or leads who are "strong" for no reason supplied in the story or with no other defining character traits. They are often portrayed with masculine traits, such as physical strength, combat prowess, and stoicism but without any other character development. They just exist as they are and never change. Therefore, these being badly written characters is implicit in the "strong wamen" criticism.
      Yes, as you said, they are poorly written characters, but they are poorly written in a specific way and generally with a specific purpose in mind by their creators, which is also an accusation implicit in the criticism. The criticism is much more specific and detailed than simply saying they are badly written because you want to look like you're saying something different.
      The people who attack those that levy these sorts of criticisms aren't going to make an exception for you simply because you used different words. You're still criticizing their choices and that is already enough to be on the wrong side as far as they're concerned.

    Vader/Anakin is supposed to be - " the chosen one" and a master swordsman....... Yet he hasn't even mastered how to successfully poke someone with a lightsaber? You'd think he'd be pretty accurate with it by now? After literally decades of using it( killing people). As Anakin he failed to kill a defenceless unarmed little girl, even after she was impaled by his weapon that would instantly kill anyone else, and can turn a reinforced solid metal doors into dripping molten metal, within seconds? Then year's later you'd think - Ok, by now Vader has finally figured out how to use his lightsaber accurately (Nope.) He failed to kill her again? for the second time, and in the exact same way? And again the writers give no explanation for how something so impossible and improbable could happen, twice? Then "Reva" of course successfully and predictably survives to the end of the show, where she is lovingly embraced by Kenobi with open arms, and told she's great by him? Apparently only Caucasian and alien younglings can be killed by a lightsaber......It's almost like a bunch of complete morons wrote this show.👍

Due to him just being incompetent? And Anakin may have had his arms and legs severed and turned into a burnt piece of toast, But he was basically magic, and also literally saved by the Palpatine and had a suit constructed for him to live in? So where is the explanation of how Reva survived being impaled by a lightsaber, two different times by the same person, and all she needed to do is just rap a bandage around her waist and she's fine? Then next time they only break the very top of his helmet? I wonder how many ways can you break Vader's helmet. Screw this series. Vader orders the entire ship to turn around for Obi-Wan, letting the rebels go, (instead of using a magnetic beam, or sending tie-fighters, or just keep firing...)... but ends up getting into his shuttle and flying after it himself , thus missing out on the rebels for no reason at all. Obi-Wan trusts Leia to some random rogue who has already seeded his transmitter...
    The duel with Vader is miserable. They wave their swords like baseball bats in episode 9, and the Force has generally turned into an anime - they crush rocks and make craters in the ground, but they can’t break each other’s bones in the same way ... they can withstand the blows of multi-ton boulders ... Obi-Wan, without jokes, becomes a god thanks to the power of friendship and lifts weight much more than Yoda ... at some point he hits Vader with the HILT of the sword ... cuts his back, but that doesn’t paralyse him ... and most importantly, he doesn’t finish him off for the second time, although he himself said his friend is dead...
    Vader does not call the cruiser to shoot down Obi-Wan's ship, but it turns out that he has a hyperdrive, which makes the whole last episode even more pointless, since he and Leia could fly to Alderaan on it all this time already at the end of episode 4 .. .
    Owen and Beru do not set any traps for Reva in the doors, they only shoot her one at the time, do not catch up with her on a speeder, do not evacuate on the speeder, do not call the local police, the same Jabba the Hutt (with the promise of money), and Luke is advised to run on foot into the desert, to the Tuskens...
    Reva with a hole in her HEART can easily fight, run and carry weights ... And finally, she, who cuts off the hands of all those who disagree, throws knives at people, kills everyone in her path, hunts the Jedi trying to kill them, tortures a 10-year-old child , suddenly cannot kill Luke, because he sees himself in him (but not in Leah) ... by the way, why? Does she know he's Vader's son? How?
    And Obi-Wan forgives her, although he saw what she was doing and Tala died because of her...
    Now the whole Empire knows that Bail Organa communicates with Obi-Wan, they are looking for him all over the galaxy, but at the same time Obi-Wan quietly flies to Alderaan to chat with Leia...
    Obi-Wan communicates with Luke, although Owen told him in A New Hope that he died at the same time as his father ... Qui-gon, it turns out, can appear without any meditation, but the whole series did not do this ...
    As a result - Obi-Wan, Owen, Beru, Bale failed their missions to protect children, and they are only alive because the Empire and Vader are even more incompetent, and Reva suddenly became kind ... and now we are waiting for a series about her ... Thank you Disney, now you've ruined every single character in the original trilogy. Star Wars is long dead, and there's no more room for nails in the coffin.

    I can imagine the theme of this episode is that fee fees are more important than one's professional duty. Obi-Wan and Darth Vader letting the other escape is the quintessential example. But also, Obi-Wan lets Reva go despite her cheap redemption and the fact that telepaths exist in this universe. There is no guarantee that Reva is the only one with that ability, nor is she beholden by some oath to keep the secret of Luke to her grave.
    I can't overemphasise how much Obi-Wan's character has regressed thanks to this final fight with Vader. As part of nostalgia, he says "I will do what I must". In ROTS, this is the climax of his dilemma when he learns Anakin has turned to the Dark Side. He is torn between his duty as a Jedi and his emotional attachments towards Anakin. He even tried to trade targets with Yoda. So when he said this line of dialogue, it was him affirming where he stood on the subject and thus his intention to kill Anakin. That carried him all the way to the lava banks of Mustafar. The duty of serving the greater good outweighs one's personal feelings.
    But here, thanks to how the fight ended, it effectively turned the message over its head. Although poorly established, the writers seem to suggest that Obi-Wan's guilt in killing Anakin is what has thrown him into his "depression". Now that he has a "second chance", he has chosen his *personal feelings over* his own duty. Sure, people may argue about mercy and not striking down a downed opponent, but mercy was what left Anakin burnt to a crisp and transformed into Vader. Mercy in this case is entirely selfish since its beneficiaries are only Obi-Wan and Darth Vader. The true cost of this mercy will be borne by the galaxy for the next 14 years. But that doesn't bother Obi-Wan since only his fee fees matter, and he has completed his "journey"(?) of not giving a hoot. And remember, nine years from now, everyone will return to their starting positions of wanting to kill each other. Except Luke is now involved and -groomed- trained for that purpose.
    When taken in its totality, this is a story of lazy Obi-Wan Kenobi. He is too lazy to protect Luke to the point of burying his lightsaber and forgetting to train. He is lazy in his duty as a Jedi, if not just a decent "hero" in sparing Darth Vader. His power-up moment is memories of Leia, implying that his 10 years protecting Luke came and went in tepid boredom and apathy compared to the few days he was with Leia. He is lazy in letting that loose end Reva run off. And now he is lazy by dumping the task of protecting Luke completely on Owen and Beru's shoulders despite the fact that 12 hours prior, they were about to get him killed. It's a surprisingly flat character arc with a slight downward incline for Obi-Wan despite what this show tries to argue to the contrary. And it just doesn't mesh with Ben Kenobi we see in Rebels or ANH.
    I would like to hear your final summary next week, though I have a particularly dim view of any "average" rating. Make no mistake, at least one sober Disney exec saw this product and thought that "average" was the best they are going to achieve. And so 5/10 might as well be 10/10. Worse, it reaffirms the formula that memberberries are all that is needed to placate SW fans. The instinct to praise mere "ideas" despite the rubbish execution is the twin brother to the legions of fans desperately writing over plot holes in an effort to maintain the illusion of "positivity", the mirage that the product is much better than it actually is. Until people stop compromising rubbish like this show because they cannot control their thirst for more SW product, SW will never improve. Be like Obi-Wan Kenobi in Mustafar, who upheld the greater good over his own feelings.

      I believe I mustered a whopping great 1.5/10 on a livestream recently. The fact there *are* some ideas worthy of praise actually counts against the show, because it just further emphasises how much potential was squandered.

    The saddest shit is that Obi-Wan on Mustafar clearly acts like Anakin is gone, and Palpatine is at least partly responsible. We previously saw him calling Anakin arrogant, and we saw Anakin being arrogant and impatient. He talks about Anakin in past tense before leaving him to die of his burns. There was some nuance because he admitted his failure, but also knew Anakin had been consumed by Vader, i.e. more than one emotion; guilt, anger, disappointment, resentment, pity were involved. But screw all that, here we need to resort to merely guilt and self pity, which both get magically resolved by a single line of dialogue. And then he says, "Darth", and people like Stuckmann talk about how it connects the trilogies, improves the prequels for him, and explains the expressions Obi-Wan uses in ANH.
    How are there people who claim to love Star Wars that are impressed with this? Did they not understand ROTS? Did they not understand those characters and the choices they made? Deborah Chow said that the prequels were a love story between Obi-Wan and Anakin, and that implied there might be some degree of thought in this, at least more than the sequels. But it seems like she (and Harold) didn't even understand or didn't care what the CLIMAX on Mustafar had to say about these two men and their complex relationship. I'm baffled. I can only assume that these people actually dislike the prequels, and think the people who watched them are stupid, and therefore anything can be stupid and nobody will notice or care?

      "Deborah Chow said that the prequels were a love story between Obi-Wan and Anakin"
      Good Lord, now I realise why this whole scenario looks like two lovers falling out. I think the point where you can see that the writers didn't understand ROTS was when Obi-Wan said "I will do what I must". In the movie, that's the watershed moment where Obi-Wan's dilemma between his duty as a Jedi and his emotions and attachments towards Anakin had ended. He chose duty, and that carried him through to the lava banks on Mustafar. It was painful, but necessary. The greater good had to be served over his own personal feelings. That message was repeated in TCW with Satine's execution.
      Now in this show, it dares to reverse the message. By leaving Vader alive, the message is that one's personal pain supersedes the greater good. That if given a second chance, one should choose their own feelings and attachments. How very anti-Jedi. And extremely selfish. Obi-Wan and Vader are the only beneficiaries of this mercy (which many fans seem to fawn). Meanwhile, the actual cost is borne by billions across the galaxy for the next 14 years.

      All they had to do was to bring reinforcements in before Kenobi kills Vader. Either that, or have Vader collapse a couple of those stone pillars, giving him time to escape. There were so many other stupid moments like that, where a small change would have made it so much better. For instance, why did Reva wait until the ships were gone before attacking Vader? Why did she scream like a maniac before striking, instead of simply sneaking up behind him and igniting her lightsaber through his chest? There was literally no reason for that, and yet, they chose the most moronic option available. It just feels like it was stupid on purpose, tbh.
