- There's a few variants of this jingle - this is one of them, "Softest Hardware." Long version (1 minute) with lyrics centering on women's clothes and accessories masquerading as hardware! Pretty catchy!
Jake Holmes wrote and sang this, as has been reported. Holmes is known for being the voice of "I'm A Pepper," and other terrific campaigns. Respect!
As a kid I always liked this ad. Something about the song was unique.
I know right!
Helayne Spivak is the creative genius behind The Softer Side of Sears ad campaign. There is a podcast where she speaks about her time in advertising and more specifically talks about the Sears campaign. I tried posting the link to it but youtube blocks it. Just search youtube for JMKast 2023: Episode 6 Helayne Spivak. That should take you to it.
This is really cool, and I hope RUclips doesn't block this: sites.libsyn.com/427256/jmkast-2023-episode-6-helayne-spivak-chris-palmer
@@TheTVMadman Thank you soooooooooooooooo much!!! I actually listen to that episode dvr it , and posted a message to them to thank them.❤❤❤❤!!!
I liked the Sears ads in which the sears logo became a door that made a closing sound. I found it enchanting for some odd reason that I can't put my finger on.
I was working in management at Sears in the Shoe dept of one of the stores when this came out. I remember it specifically when it came out. There was soooo much hoopla going on as we prepared for the aftermath of this campaign. It clearly worked as we did start getting more 'foot traffic' in the months and years after. Those were the days.
I really like this campaign (with the Male vocal). But I have to go with the "more for your life" campaign for 1st place.👍

foot traffic in a shoe store, sounds about right. The shoe salesgirl asked me if I wanted to wear the shoes out. I replied, 'no, I want them to last a long time.'
The voice of the legendary Jingle Jake Holmes.
Thank you so much saw him on a talk show once and he was just as awesome
I was in the 6th grade when this commercial came out and I remember singing it and wanting to be an adult so I can shop at Sears! LOL!
DreSully how about now?
Same here
With this SEARS got back on its feet in the early 90s with its softer side and many sides
That "come see the softer side of Sears" line is murder to sing; those chord changes are chromatic as hell.
The genius (and talent) of Jake Holmes!
Ah another music nerd. Amazing talent here
it might be time for a vocal cord change, just sayin'.
@@spectrum10Amen. This dude's voice is hideous.
This male vocalist had a longstanding friendship with Randy Newman. I can hear the similarities. It’s jazzy. This was the better of the Sears “comeback” commercials of the mid 90’s.
This is such a creative ad campaign. I remember the song from when I was a kid, but back then, I didn't pick up on the gimmick of it: describing clothes and accessories in ways that make them sound like things in the hardware department. Very original!
This was composed and performed by Jake Holmes, a singer-songwriter known for his catchy jingles, which include "Be all you can be" for the U.S. Army, "Raise your hand" for Sure deodorant, "While you're at the Marketplace" for Winn-Dixie, and perhaps his best known jingle, "Be a Pepper, drink Dr. Pepper".
FACTS.
I'm pretty sure Jake also did "Be Cool About Fire Safety" in the late '90s.
And, Jake also did a commercial jingle for Thomases English muffins in 1984 along with Stouffer‘s pizza a few years later.
Jake is a treasure. I'd love to talk to him someday, but I fear speaking at length about his amazing jingles might turn him off!
The TV Madman he might be astounded. You never know. I even love his Lego maniac jingles too. But my all-time favorite is the softer side of Sears campaign.
And was also the original songwriter of Dazed and Confused, performed by the Yardbirds and made famous by Led Zeppelin (initially without any attribution to the original songwriter).
0:13 "Denim seat covers with a real comfy fit" with the lady in the Levi's :)
I love this version over the female version of the softer side of Sears. I love Jake holmes. He created a lot of jingles back in the day. Including Stouffers Pizza in 1984. And, he created a radio jingle commercial for the $5000 bar from Nestlé.
I always loved that Stouffer’s Pizza jingle! It took years to realize Jaje Holmes was singing both; when you’re young that stuff can fly over you head.
@@jwavada I love it too. Did you also know that he did a jingle for Ovaltine? He did way too many. and he did the army reserves commercial jingle that was written by Luther Vandross believe it or not.
Yep. I liked it better than the female vocal version too.
It was before Kmart merged with them and recked them.
What wrecked K-Mart AND Sears was an idiotic Wall Street cannibal named Eddie Lampert. Every time he closed a store and sold the real estate, the loot went right into his pocket. There are plenty of online articles you can read about this jerk.
Love the "electric pumps" part. Would love to date a girl who wears cute shoes.
My god, how did anyone tolerate that crappy sound quality in 1993? I'd already had TWO Hi-Fi VCRs for 5 years at that point!
I never understood the obsession with SLP/mono VCR usage.
I don't mind it, it gives me nostalgia
walt disney
Personally, I would not wear a muffler while riding a bicycle. It could get caught in the spokes. Just sayin'.
True facts
I feel sorry for the guy singing this song. I bet as a young aspiring artist he envisioned his life going in a different direction.
He wrote a few well-known rock songs but is mainly known for commercials.
I don't want to sound racist but (for give me) isn't that an African American woman voice
Marco Macias I think it’s a white dude, but he certainly learned a lot from the phrasing and singing of black women singers
No it is not. It’s a guy. The famous voice is Jake Holmes.
Charles Barnes yes he is white. But it doesn’t matter. I like it.
I was thinking the same thing
He sounds nothing like a black woman
