As a doctor with tinnitus I always have the "japanese garden" sound from Mynoise playing in the background of my consultations, I'm pretty sure my patients don't even notice but it really helps me to focus.
Apple recently released a background noise option that can play different types of white noise, rain sounds, stream sounds etc... it's in accessibility settings.
Thank you so much for this. I have tinnitus since 2011. It began after I visited a construction work. It was a nightmare in the beginning. But now its only bothering when I am sick. I can hear it when its silent around me, a tonal tinnitus. My tinnitus got better after a few years, and the time I am aware of tinnitus has reduced. I dont need sound enrichment any longer, and I sleep well. I only have hearing on one ear.
I have tinnitus for around 2 years now mines due to hearing loss im level 2 deaf mines due to age in the beg was very hard to focus with the noise but after reading about it seeing your videos helped me to understand whats going on thank you i find campfires crickets and rain and waterfall sounds help a lot.
That really helped ! I was missing a couple of points. I didn’t realize that during the day I should be able to hear the tinnitus along with the ambient sound . Also l always thought the AirPods were overkill so I’m glad I listened to my intuition. Thanks again🙏😊 I appreciate your dedication, experience and education on tinnitus.

Thanks Dr Ben. I wish I would have watched this video a month ago. I recently tried a pair of Apple Airpod Pro (2nd generation) Earbuds. You're correct. They were not the best choice for tinnitus treatment. Today, I ordered a pair of open ear bone conduction headphones based on your recommendation. Hopefully, the open ear design will eliminate the excessive ringing I hear when using ear buds that block my ear canals. I appreciate your advice and, please, keep the videos coming. 🙂
I have the More Level 1 hearing aids and use the "Speech in Noise" channel all day which plays an ocean wave sound just below the level of my very loud tinnitus. My former audiologist prescribed aids with domes that occluded my ear canals and my new audiologist recommended an "open" dome so as not to occlude my canals, allowing more sound and natural sounds to enter my ears. This seems to work great and I'm hearing better with the More 1. However, at night, I've used an Amazon Echo to play a similar ocean waves sound all night and this is helpful, but when I roll my head over on the pillow, obviously it blocks one ear and the tinnitus is louder or more noticeable. I'm trying the Bose Sleepbuds 2, but I don't think they're going to work out since even though they're tiny, I still feel discomfort in my ear when I lay on one side on a pillow (I'm going to try a softer pillow to see if that helps). Also, they totally occlude my ear canals and I think they indeed make my tinnitus louder. I see you recommend them but wonder since they're occlusive, why do you recommend them for sleep and then say the ears need to be "open" during the day? Seems to me the bluetooth headband you suggested would be a good method to prevent blocking an ear when you lay on your side - if they're comfortable when the ear is on the pillow. That may be next step if the Sleepbuds don't work out.
Hi Dr. Ben, Just discovered your channel while shopping for Airbuds Pro to help with tinnitus. Very nice! Thanks for the empathy and support. A sidebar: I know that Tinnitus is still somewhat of a mystery. If I can throw in some of my thoughts. I have had this problem as long as I can remember. It is annoying, but through habituation have learned to live with it. Now in my 60's It seems to be getting louder and blocking some of my normal hearing. I guess this is normal, and I look forward to trying your suggestions for sound therapy. But here is the thing: ever since I was a kid, I could 'hear' Traffic radar (from stationary traffic light changing fixtures) and ultra sonic alarm systems (and store door opener) sensors. I could close my eyes and know exactly when I was passing under them. I could sense the higher-frequency waves in the back of my head almost running down my spine. (I used to think of it as my Spidey sense). Weird huh? It always sounded like my tinnitus, but a bit different. I would tell doctors and audiologists but they would just give me the fish eye and ignore my claims. When studying Bio-Physics in college, I came to the conclusion that maybe my tinnitus was just universal environmental background noise (that I (and others) might have somehow been 'privileged to. What do you think? I am nuts to think that tinnitus is some kind of Wilson/Penzias radiation that is beyond the parameters of normal human hearing? I would appreciate your opinion. Thanks.
Your situation is fascinating! Following the neurophysiological model as defined by neuroscientist and founder of tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), Pawel Jastreboff, Ph.D., Sc.D., tinnitus is the perception of a sound that results exclusively from activity within the nervous system without any corresponding mechanical, vibratory activity within the cochlea, and unrelated to external stimulation (Jastreboff, 1995).
Hey Gabriel, sound therapy is not a forever recommendation. Once you habituate, you may not need sound therapy. That's what usually happens. Sound therapy is used for a time. Not forever.
Is it bad I have pulsatile tinnitus at 22? And how long do I need to do sound therapy? (Edit: found the answer in another comment) And wow! I definitely need to use my airpods less. I’m always listening to music during the day. Thank you!!
Thanks for the video. You didn't mention about the Notch sound therapy, which modern Signia hearing aids have on board. What do you think of that technology? Does it work?
@@treblehealth hi Ben how can you be so shore that these treatments drugs will silence tinnitus you might be wrong but if thay don't completey silence tinnitus then the noise in your brain will be very low soft noise in background close to silence well that brilliant freedom
Thank you so much for this helpful and informative video, Dr. Ben. Just one question, do you think using earbuds line Air.Pods to sleep at night could make tinnitus? I like falling asleep with ear buds listening to soft music or natural sounds in a low volume, but I'm worried this could make my tinnitus more severe. Thanks!
I’m new to tinnitus (1 month in, 24/7, it’s nerve wracking), and I just ordered both bone conduction headphones and a bluetooth headband (before even seeing your video). Guess I’m on the right track. I think I’ve also become sound sensitive. I realize that if I wear ear plugs, my tinnitus bothers me less (nb I “hear” my tinnitus bilaterally in my head, hardly ever in my ears). But I’ve heard you state more than once that wearing ear plugs is detrimental. I was thinking of purchasing noise reducing ear plugs but don’t want to worsen my condition. What would you suggest? Thanks!

Thanks for this summary Dr Ben. I have recently (3 weeks) got NHS (UK) hearing aid. I have tinnitus in my left ear and also a perforation in that ear, which ENT said is unlikely to heal. Also significant hearing loss in that ear. I have been provided with hearing aids - the right one is a thin tube design but the left one is a mould design, because of the perforation. So far I've not had much relief of tinnitus from the hearing aids. Based on what you said about blocked ears I am wondering if I'd be better with some bone conduction headphones for retraining therapy.

Are the hearing aids programmed for hearing loss purposes / amplification only? I recommend your audiologist create a program(s) using sound therapy that plays through your hearing aids, if possible.
It's not uncommon for the tinnitus to fluctuate for a few weeks after starting to use sound therapy consistently. We recommend following up with your Audiologist to discuss further and make any necessary adjustments.

Can I just ask I have a cold which I have had for a week and a half it has caused a sound in my left ear an unusual one on top of my already high ringing in my right which I very loud all the time, is there a chance it might go in the left as I know ENT is all linked etc only come on since my cold and the tinnitus already a 10 is about a 15/10 since I have the cold. There is no science to support Airpods will cause tinnitus. We recommend listening to soothing sounds at a low volume.

i have the same. i have to be in silence. i heard lay people call it reactive tinnitus. i realised not a lot is offered for that type.
Is it true that tinnitus masking sounds would worsen the condition in the long run? I have read it some where. Please respond.
We find the opposite to be true. Patients tend to find tinnitus relief from using masking sounds and it can help to guide them toward habituation.
