  • It's a question that's been asked for a long time, and it seems like it could be problematic. But is it? Does it really even make sense? Let's answer the question, "can God create a rock so big even he couldn't lift it?"

The question is a problem for physics also. To lift something implies a stable base on which to stand, but unless the base has a greater mass it is the base that would move not the rock (quite apart from the fact that the amount of gravity being exerted would mean the two things would just crush together and anything in-between be squashed between them, unless either it was immaterial (in which case how does it 'lift' or having a greater mass than the rock meaning the rock is not the biggest thing after all.
Years ago someone tried to talk about whether God could make an immovable object... and then move it. I replied by asking immovable with regards to what, which flummoxed them since they assumed the Earth. But if an immovable object were placed on Earth it would immediately shoot into space or drill through the Earth depending on where it was placed, since the Earth is rotating around its axis and orbiting around the sun and moving away from the centre of the universe. A blink of the eye and the immovable object would be gone.... but would it be immovable since it was clearly moving relative to everything else, except perhaps the centre of the universe, but we are not at the centre of the universe. Thus an immovable object is always moving relative to other things.

The question is flawed because a rock cannot be infinite and finite simultaneously. It's like asking about the existence of a Married Bachelor or a square triangle.
