Hi. Thanks for the great tutorial. Does the Tether App give us the option to browse back to previous images? Or do I have to go into Lightroom for that?
the USB cable is labeled for USB 2.0. It is good info. to see the tethering system works with a certain USB 2.0 cable but using USB 3.0 cable should be safer.
6:07 I had to watch the video just so I could find the little LV button which I had no idea was how to bring the bloody display up LOL! Nice tutorial dude. Love your work.
Thank you for this. One issue with this might be that if you manage your Lightroom catalog by importing to various different directories on your drive (as opposed to "folders" within LRc,) , you'd have to change the auto import settings with each shoot. Say you do product shots, portraits, and landscapes, and want to manage them in different directories, you'd need to set up the import target at each shoot. Something I'd be likely to forget to do. And then I'd have a mess. Am I incorrect?
In general, NLEs aren’t designed to capture video in realtime. You can certainly eat software to do that (Blackmagic’s Media Express comes to mind) but then you need a proper HDMI to USB or Thunderbolt interface; not just the USB cable.
@@photojoseph what about Panasonic's new Tethering BETA software? It seems you can capture to a card and then after you stop recording you can transfer the files over to PC. You can monitor and control focus etc... I have been testing and it seems to work but I'm just want to make sure it's not dropping frames or something.
I would not trust it to be not dropping frames. It’s not what it’s designed for. And the image coming over USB will be highly compressed compared to what comes over HDMI. Just get the hardware; an HDMI to USB converter.
@@photojoseph Thanks for your fast response really appreciate... but it's not pleasant to work with. Capture Ones has a tethering with Canon camera without a lag..!
awesome thanks,, wow I updated my GH5S firmware to 1.6 this morning and I got this to work with my Macbook. Very cool. Can this be done with an iPad Pro ? All I'm trying to do is control the camera with my iPad and the Image App WiFi method has been extremely frustrating for me. The connection cuts out and disappears and is just very slow and makes shooting a nightmare.
Have you done any updated videos tethering through Panasonic’s new LUMIX Webcam Software (Beta) for live streaming? I have a GH5 and my PC recognizes and captures the live feed just fine but there’s a lag and the feed isn’t smooth (jitters). I suspect it’s my cable but I don’t know which specs to look for in a cable. USB-C to USB-A? USB-C to USB-C? 3.0? 3.1? 100w or 60w? Etc.
I Pretty sure USB 3.0 is enough and it’s not powering so wattage shouldn’t matter. Connect directly to the computer, not through a hub, and see if that helps?
Absolutely fabulous show today. I take my hat off to you. Well done.i have learned so much from you since I found your channel. I have a question. What would you consider as the best selection of settings for great video (Cinema) look . I have a GH5S, ninja inferno and Zoom F4. I Need a little help, just learning this format. Thanks again James
Thanks! There are no settings to give you a cinema look. Traditionalists will say to shoot 24fps (and if you do, be sure to shoot 23.98, not 24.00) but with more and more Hollywood directors opting for 60p and higher, this is no longer the norm. A “cinematic” look is more about lighting, camera moves, color grading, etc. than frame rate. However for the best quality and control in post shoot as high a bitrate and color depth as possible. If you are using the inferno then you can do 10-bit 60p, which is awesome! Good luck and watch lots of RUclips videos, taking everyone’s advice (including mine) with a grain of salt.
Hi, have Lumix G9 trying to tether via Lumix tether to Lightroom. Lumix tether is working, but I can only see one picture at the time/the last taken, wich I dont like. Is that right? Lightroom can not find/detect my camera; trying everything in the book! Do I have to add Lumix tether plugin manually in Lightroom? It is not there in version 9.0?? And where to find the plugin? Thanks!
PhotoJoseph when you use the fine aperture control in the software, does it actually change the physical aperture for those “in between” settings.. or does the physical aperture stay at the camera defined value and the software just underburns/overburns the image digitally? Thinking through it.. if the software is performing the fine adjustment instead of it actually physically changing the aperture, it would seem that your RAW images saved to the SD card might have a slightly different exposure than the ones saved to the computer. Alternatively, if it does make fine physical changes to the aperture, it would make sense that Panasonic “could” give you these options in camera.
I need to test this as it’s a great question. Since the newer lenses have smooth iris control for video purposes I’m going to assume that it’s actually moving the aperture very slightly. But I’ll have to test. Don’t think I’ll get to it though before I leave
GH5S Update: I have been having issues getting the GH5S and Lumix Tether to work on my 5K iMac. I have tried the GH5S and Lumix Tether on my MacBook Pro and all is good, the connection opens up the software and I'm able to control the GH5S. The iMac and MacBook are using the same macOS 10.13.3 High Sierra. Oh yeah, I do own a G9, I use a nice desktop PC, and I just picked up a Tethertools 15' USB-C 3.0 to Micro-B 3.0 with a Jerk stopper the day before last, shortly afterwards, I found your tutorial. I have heard rumor of certain cameras loosing signal or creating poor, noisy connection through the USB-C option of cables. With you're experience while shooting the Lumix G series cameras while tethered, have you had a problem with these problems? Thank you.
Joseph, Have you looked at your import files? Every time I've used Lumix Tether, shooting just RAW (Only mode I use), my files are saved to PC as 1920 x 1440. But still saved on camera card as 5208 x 3904. It seems that the software is only transfering a copy of a resized image that the LCD uses? I've tried 2 PC's now, both act the same.
@@photojoseph Never mind. Tried on a 3 CPU, it's fine. Deeper look, my other 2 laptops are not showing the proper info for the files. So false alarm on my part. Just crappy Raw codecs. Thanks for the great vids BTW!

Is there any duration limitation? Hello. I tried to stream with my Nikon D5600. Unfortunately, after 30 minutes the liveview auto shutdown making it unusable on OBS via HDMI link. The Nikon Webcam software provide such poor quality so it's useless. I want to buy the Lumix G9, but it has 30 min video recording limit. Will I have the same issue? Does it auto-shutdown? Or I'll be able to use the G9 for livestreaming to OBS via HDMI/Tether without auto shutdown? Or should I go to GH5? thanks guys
Great question. The 30 minute limit is ONLY for recording. You can have HDMI output enabled indefinitely. I use several G9 cameras in a studio environment where recording is all done on the HDMI output, and the cameras never shut down. In fact, I had a GH4 running for a couple of years without ever turning it off!

Yeah… but it’s not very reliable. There’s a way to do it wirelessly but I’ve never tried this; read this thread www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3689046 plus there’s an app from a company called Promote Systems. Watch this m.ruclips.net/video/CyqCbsysgFM/видео.html
Hello. Long time listener, first time commenter.. lol. Quick question, been using Lumix tether for a while now using GH5. currently using latest firmware and tether software using TetherTools cables, etc. Do you have inside info on if transfer is faster if shooting JPG+ RAW. I only shoot in RAW, but would be intersted if you or anyone has any insight on this. Usually I get a long lag about half way through a long shoot. Thanks for all that you do for our community :)
Hi Rick. Shooting RAW+JPEG would definitely be slower than just RAW, since there’s more data to transfer, but what you MIGHT get (and I haven’t tested this so I’m guessing) is if you shoot RAW+JPEG, especially small JPEG, then the image may appear on the computer faster because the smaller JPEG file could be transferred first. It’s an untested theory but it makes sense. Give it a try!
PhotoJoseph Thank you!!! That was my thought as well. I’m going to do a shoot tomorrow and test our theory. I searched high and low for info about lumix tether w this and dead end. I appreciate your quick response :)
@@photojoseph Howdy. I've done a few sessions with RAW + SM JPG enabled, maybe its a placebo effect, but I think its displaying quicker in lumix tether. I'd be curious if anyone else has experienced this. Hope all is well :)
have updated to 2.2 latest firmware but gh5 does not ask mode in usb. lumix tether doesn't find camera even though cards are accessible with pc. any thoughts? thanks
Thank you great demo. I'm tethering to Capture One version 11.3.2 with lumix Software. The files import to my selected folder(Hot folder). The issue I'm having is any adjustments i make in Capture One do not apply to incoming files. I've saved adjustments as a Style and no luck. I've also tried every setting in Next Capture Adjustment tool. Any setting I'm forgetting to change?
I really don’t know, sorry. It’s been years since I played with tethering on C1. On Lightroom, the ability to apply a preset on tethered capture is a setting in the tethering menu. It’s really cool to do. But I don’t know what would be different in C1, sorry.
No, the LUMIX tether is for GH5/G9 series only. I don’t know of a way to tether the FZ300 sorry. You may be able to get it working wirelessly if you’re on a PC though. I never have but I’ve heard it works reasonably well.
Im finding the app to be a but choppy , despite being plugged into my fasted port. Ive closed all other apps and Im still not getting a consistent 24 fps
Hey Joseph, Giacomo from Italy here, thanks for your great content, I really appreciate your videos. I got a question, since I don't know where else to go...With the latest Catalina update, Lumix Tether stopped working either on my late 2012 27" iMac, and on my newest MacBook Pro 16"...same behaviour on each one...Lumix Tether is latest versions, 1.7...anyone can help? Thank you!
I just looked this up, there are some known issues noted here av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/info/macos_tether.html but that's probably not what you're running into. I just updated to 1.7 and tried it and am getting the error "operation can not currently be performed". Is that what you're seeing? I'll dig into this.
@@photojoseph Thanks Joseph. Yes, I got to see that page...and since it's from a couple months ago I wished something was done by Panasonic by now...The issue is quite random...sometimes I do not get any message, the app simply doesn't show up, the interface is missing at all, I can only quit the app which doesn't seem to be frozen or anything.. Sometimes I get this message: "An internal error occurred during camera connection", mostly when I open the app with my G9 already connected on the tether option. This is a real bummer...
@@GiacomoArdesi A few questions for you. First, can you please test with the USB cable that came with the camera? If the issue still persists, I need all the usual suspect info… what firmware your camera is on (obviously if it's not on the latest, upgrade that and test again first), and then specifically what Mac you are using, what exact version of macOS. Thanks.
@@photojoseph So, yes, the cable is exactly the one that came with the camera, and before the issue came along, I could use it with a long extension USB cable attached without a problem on my late 2012 27" iMac. I guess it's all about the latest Catalina updates. Now the issue is the same on that iMac AND on my latest 16" MacBook Pro, that just came in with the latest OS version. Firmware on the G9 is 2.0 and Lumix Tether is 1.7. Thanks for the follow up Joseph.

Using the G9, a 12-60mm Lumix Leica f / 2.8-4, an 8-18mm f / 2.8-4 or a Lumix 30mm macro? Or should I try ro rush and rent a different lens. Thanks Joseph.
Am I the only one who can't get their gh5 and Tether app to work? Macbook Mojave 10.14.1. The app simply doesn't work. All screens are just solid black. I've reinstalled and can't even get GH5 to communicate with both classic and new Lightroom. Any help?
there were some issues with specific versions of macOS. Check the Panasonic support page here for details: av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/soft/download/d_lumixtether.html
You’re right. Thank you. I updated to the latest version of Catalina. It works now. Their site is confusing. It made me think Catalina in general was the problem. But it was only one version of Catalina. 10.15. - 10.15.4 works.
Sure, but it'd also be a LOT slower by wireless. It is apparently possible to tether wirelessly but I think it only works on a PC, not a Mac. I tried setting it up once and got nowhere fast.
Have been shooting Wireless at events for years since the GH4 and it's not slow. Have done a video showing how to set the WiFi up on my channel. Slightly faster using a cable, but restrictive.
@@SpoonerStudios I would guess that you're only transferring JPEG. Transferring RAW would be much slower over wifi than using a cable. Wifi is also a pain to set up, and I've never managed to get it working successfully with my Mac (and I've worked in IT for 20 years so I'm fairly sure it's not PEBKAC)
I have connected my camera, the dialogue asking me to connect the camera disappears after saying its connected. Then I wait, and wait, nothing happens.

4:18 I plugged my G9 into my Surface Book, and it says to turn off charging over USB. I checked G9 menus, found a setting that looked relevant, turned it off. Still the same result. The G9 has the November update. Any hits?
Do you have the latest LUMIXTether app? It's been updated a few times since its release. There is a known issue right now on macOS but you said "Surface Book" so that's not the problem… I'd start by making sure EVERYTHING is on the latest version, and take it from there. av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/soft/download/d_lumixtether.html

Great video! Does the Lumix tethering work with GH4? If not, can I directly tether the GH4 into the Lightroom?
Unfortunate no to both questions 🙁
Thanks for replying. Is there any other way to tether GH4 then?
Sure thing and please let me know what you find!
@@photojoseph Howdy. I've done a few sessions with RAW + SM JPG enabled, maybe its a placebo effect, but I think its displaying quicker in lumix tether. I'd be curious if anyone else has experienced this. Hope all is well :)
Rick Campbell The JPEG is probably sent first, so that makes sense.
have updated to 2.2 latest firmware but gh5 does not ask mode in usb. lumix tether doesn't find camera even though cards are accessible with pc. any thoughts?
@@photojoseph Thank you! Will upgrade Capture One soon, maybe new version can keep settings.
is it possibleto tether with a lumix Fz300 aswell? if i cant what software do you think i can use to tether with my camera?
No, the LUMIX tether is for GH5/G9 series only. I don’t know of a way to tether the FZ300 sorry. You may be able to get it working wirelessly if you’re on a PC though. I never have but I’ve heard it works reasonably well.
Im finding the app to be a but choppy , despite being plugged into my fasted port. Ive closed all other apps and Im still not getting a consistent 24 fps
Shoot raw.
Set camera to black and white
Use imbedded oreview.
I did wonder as you were doing it.
Have tried this shooting high res?
Not tethered, no.
i installed the lumix tether software but lightroom cc classic still does not recognize my gh5 what is wrong?
It sounds like you haven't watched the video yet… you use the LUMIX tethering app, not Lightroom. This video explains how to connect the two.
PhotoJoseph i found the mistake myself l. did not watch enough. i thought the lumix software was kind of a driver with extra features now it works
I teathered for years ! Now its Bluetooth and wifi ! G9 has wifi !
@@photojoseph The official page updated...but no good news...av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/info/macos_tether.html
Is your laptop a Mac I book?
MacBook Pro, yes. But the software is available for Mac and PC. Check the download link in the description.
Hello. It's me again. I'm trying to prep for my first shoot in 2 days, and amongst the nerves, I would like to know which lens that I have, other then the super-telephoto, would suit best. I would like to try some post focus and blurring to accentuate the the products. It is a mens grooming supplies product shoot.
10.15. - 10.15.4 works.
glad to hear it. And yes, the Panasonic site there can be a little confusing.
If it was wireless! But...by cable? Kinda restrictive.
Really! This I need to see. Link please!
Spooner Studios yes a link please. I had a look but couldn't find that video easily.
Has anybody managed to get this working for the GH5S on a Mac?
I have connected my camera, the dialogue asking me to connect the camera disappears after saying its connected. Then I wait, and wait, nothing happens.
I actually haven’t tried on the S but I can on Monday… but to be sure; have you already launched the app on the Mac? It doesn’t automatically launch.
PhotoJoseph Hi yes started the app waited for the dialogue window to ask to connect camera. I’ve also tried connecting the camera and then starting the app. As soon as I plug-in the USB C lead the camera asks me to select an option, I select PC Tether... I’ve also sent a request to Panasonic for support. Thanks in advance.
Colin Walker
Ok I’ll try this as soon as I can.
Oh and are you sure you have the latest version of the tethering software? GH5S support was of course just recently added.
PhotoJoseph Hi yes, used the link above. I noticed that support was added in the middle of January, I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Don’t spend too much time on it his, I’ve got a support request in with Panasonic. I’ll post what they say when I hear back... Take care. Colin Walker
Would you know if the "PC Storage" option is for plugging in a hard and using that to store the captured images???
It’s not.
Man I love your content, but please slow down a bit.
I can’t. It’s my nature.
@@photojoseph I suppose it's also mine too, when I speak about something I'm passionate about. I still love your content!
@@photojoseph We're not ALL English ;-)
i wish the tether would have wavemonitor not just histogram
DMC-G7? :(
Sorry, it doesn’t have the hardware to support this.

Lumix Tether locks up to much... I really wish I had the ability to shoot straight in to Lightroom.
Does it? I haven’t had a problem. And I’ve used it on several studio shoots.
PhotoJoseph I normally shoot all my photography with a D810 but wanted to use that monochrome D profile. My default work flow is Capture One but it’s not supported for tethered shooting so that left Lightroom as my solution ... LUMIX tether just locked up on me ! I switch to the D810 because I was in the beginning of the session and didn’t want to trouble shoot with the client present. I really want to figure this out because I really like the 42.5 1.2 it’s just something about the Image.
Not sure what to advise to troubleshoot. Standard stuff like make a new user account, see if problem is reproducible.
@@damionmiller1 Capture One supports hot folders. No help though if Lumix Tether fails.
I think that is the wrong cable for a G9.
If you skip the first four minutes you won't have missed any anything to do with the title.
gosh, so much empty talk
