- Longhorn was the development code name for Vista.
This happened on June 6th 2005, at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference. Steve Jobs was doing a recap of Mac OS X Tiger's features, just six weeks after its release. This is when he presented the third-party Dashboard widgets.

Longhorn was a OS by Microsoft with Windows Own File System, that system was so buggy and closed the project for later give us a fast maked OS called Windows Vista, so Vista's original name wasn't Longhorn.

Longhorn was the development code name for Windows Vista, which was mostly thought to be vaporware at the time, since it kept getting delayed. Steve Jobs was showing features that ended up being in Vista more than a year later, and jokingly pointed out the fact that Vista was so late. Therefore, it is accurate to say that this excerpt depicts "Steve Jobs vs Windows Vista". Is there anything else you need to get clarified ;) ?

And then Microsoft literally ruined all those excitement with Vista.
@@sriramsundar8388 Hardware manufacturers ruined it by very slowly providing working drivers for the new WDM after release, or none at all to enforce obsolescence. Vista itself wasn't that bad, it just felt painfully slow due to every small thing on the interface being animated or semi transparent by default.
@@michaelguenther3141 the drivers in Vista was very new and different from the XP. Thus, the hardware requirements for Vista was sky high.

@Knobcore Well, the posting I replied to had nothing to do with Longhorn, so...
@V. Sriram Sundar Right, it needed a graphics accelerator just to draw the desktop, which was ridiculous. On the other hand all those visual gimmics could be turned off, making Vista look like XP again and also give back a bit of a snappy feeling to the GUI. I never had a problem with Vista. I liked Windows 7, but Windows 8 made me consciously aware that I was having to think harder about getting my computer to do what I wanted to do. Windows 10 has been utterly awesome.
Yeah I wonder when control panel and options will become one thing but I guess we’ll have the new and the old slapped together forever.
Windows 8 was just all around a terrible design.
for a minute i thought we were looking at the windows vista desktop gadgets
windows vista was actually a massive leap forward from windows XP. The problem wasn't the OS- it was the shit ass computers people were installing it on. The Pentium 3 PCs people were loading vista onto would choke trying to run iOS7
Nah, Vista was just garbage. I installed it on a P4, 2GB ram, HD 4650 and it ran really slow.
The I switched to Win 7 and it ran almost the same as XP.
***** haha exactly.
***** may be, but everyone I knew who had Vista complained about bugs and crashing. Almost nobody I knew and know with 7 complains about bugs and crashing. they must've fixed the important things.
sure, it'd be easy to blame everyone else for the mistake of one. the problem wasn't people with old computers trying to upgrade to vista. the problem was vista. even the new at the time computers that had the "vista ready" stickers on them (which was a partnered idea from MS) came to a grinding hault because vista was a complete resource hog for the standards that it was released during. Why are you throwing a mobile device in there as if that's supposed to mean something, by the way? iOS 7 ran just fine for the hardware it supported (all except maybe the bottom fringe of devices about to be phased out). How is this a comparison to vista?
+memoraphile
The problem wasn't Vista. The problem was people trying to install Vista on computers with 2gb's of RAM and shitty Pentium 4's just like you said.
Vista required at the very least 4gb's of RAM to run properly, which never came into light until the time Windows 7 came popping around.
Then Windows Vista Service Pack 2 came out, and fixed a lot of issues with Vista over-all, actually making it better then Windows 7 even in a lot of ways.
People back then: holy shit this thing can count down dates

Really a lot of context is needed for this video to make sense. Widgets were a main feature for Vista, and it's codename was Longhorn apparently.
By the time the hardware of the time was able to run Vista properly, Windows 7 was on the cusp of release.
not really, it was really fine by 2008 (when 2go ram and dual core processors were standard), the cool thing is that vista's release multiplied by 4 the average lowend PC's specs within one year.

Funny thing is, Vista had active updates until just 4 years ago. That's like 10 years of support and a PC from that time can still run WIndows 10. OS X Tiger on the other hand was supported for like 2 and a half years and no Mac whatsoever form that period can run the current MacOS. Shows you the difference in attitude towards customers, eh?
1) nobody cares
2) we have two Mac Pro from 2008 and still using them for high requirement digital work, still working fine
Probably because at the time Macs ran on PowerPC hardware, whereas Windows computers were X86, but sure Apple bad.
I ran Vista in late 2008 and it was super smooth for me.
Same! :D
Nothing major was ever really wrong with it other than the original move towards it left some in the cold for drivers and a few other little unexpected things. Within a reasonable time, about a year, it was just fine. I saw a desktop running it in a doctors office not long ago. It was doing just fine. The uproar was more to do with people who wanted to bash it than how bad it supposedly was. Now they are trying to pull the same stunt with win 8, which again, has nothing wrong with it. My grandma can easily find the start, and knows how to shut down, and loves the touch on her laptop. I doubt she's more tech savvy than the complainers out there.

But that is exactly where and why the Apple Ecosystem shines. The KEXTs in OS X mostly are made by OS X Developers, so they know the system in and out. Most hardware makers don't care that much about their software. Since i use everything, i can tell: If you wan't a rockstable System with a lot of Power, that most of the time just does what you want it to...get a Mac. In Comparison, an iMac isn't that much more expensive, then for example one of those Lenovo AiOs. But you don't get some cheap Plastic with the Apple.
On the other Hand: If you like to tinker, get the absolute most out of your hardware and want to have the possibility for everything - just build that thing yourself, do some research what components are working together well...

Agreed. I went to a Microsoft developer conference several years ago, and they handed out copies of Visual Studio and Vista Ultimate. Vista was actually a decent operating system, the problems were that most people didn't have a computer powerful enough to run Aero theme, and Vista came bundled with a bunch of random junk that nobody ever used like MSN.
The problem with Vista was all the cheap component manufacturers that the typical PC OEMs use not doing their jobs to deliver Vista compatible drivers in time. Thus many off the shelf PCs having lots of problems. But MS gave all those companies more than adequate time to be ready for Vista. If you built a system with decent components from reputable brands, didn't even have to be the most powerful system in the world, Vista worked fine from day 1.
And don't forget about UAC which was the nightmare of these "powerusers". They were whining on every forums how to disable it, and they hated Vista because of the UAC (and now they remember "ah, it worked badly" - not, skillman, you were the bad). "Vista was just XP SP4"
That is crazy. The jump from XP to Vista is the biggest in the Win NT series since NT4. If anything, you could call Win7 a Service Pack to Vista, but that would be a huge stretch, too.
And still to this day, there hasnt been a better and cooler looking OS than Vista.
Even Windows fucked it up in later version. Aero, you will be missed dearly.
Another reason I am currently ticked at Apple. Windows is GREAT!
Windows 7 is the best OS on the market right now, simply because of compatibility, freedom but still with structure. Windows has give and take of knowledge of how to use it, so once you've used it a little bit it's like driving your car, it just feels natural. You can pick up how to use a Mac very quickly, but you've literally seen all it can do at a first user experience, it doesn't bring enough to the table.

Not sure why people love hating on Vista so much. The reason it "sucked" so much is because it was too ahead of its time. Most peoples' computers simply weren't powerful enough to run it, leading to all the crashes, instability, etc. I remember buying a brand new PC that came with Vista and a decent Nvidia graphics card back in 2006, and it ran perfectly fine for the few years that I used it before upgrading to Windows 7.
