    I only live a few minutes away from the Boardwalk and have lived near it for over fifty years. I worked as a ride operator here in the 1970's and again in 2011 as part of the maintenance crew. This place has been a big part of my growing up from childhood on up to and through my adulthood. I'm glad you enjoyed the place. In the daytime the views of the Monterey Bay from the Sky Glider are gorgeous on a sunny day. Thanks for featuring this amusement park on your channel. Being a Santa Cruz local, I feel a certain pride about the Boardwalk.

      Kanao Kanegon Do you remember Wave Jammer?

    • @cayoooga
      @cayoooga 7 лет назад +4

      Yes, I do remember "Wave Jammer" which was next to the Sky Glider station. It was replaced by "Rock & Roll". I also remember before "Wave Jammer" it was the "Paratrooper" that was located there.

      Kanao Kanegon Your too ancient to be on the internet.

    • @MarcAnthem
      @MarcAnthem 7 лет назад +3

      Kanao Kanegon just want to echo your sentiment. I'm from Sacramento and I've going to Santa Cruz to visit the Boardwalk and Wharf have been a tradition in my family since my Grandpa came from Mexico in the 40's. Three generations have gone. The Boardwalk and Santa Cruz will always have a big spot in my heart. Nothing like a busy summer night enjoying some soft serve and watching Friday Night Concerts. Its the best.

      Lol! As a local, who hasn't worked at the Boardwalk as their first job? One of my only photos of my mom was when she worked there as a young teen.
      I'm not sure how many generations back I've got tied here, but I know my grandparents built their home downtown (the '89 earthquake destroyed) and my great grandparents used to live in a house downtown that is now a local business.
      I just recently saw some old home movies a relative gave me, in black and white from the early 60's of a drive pass the Boardwalk. So vintage!
      I drove by yesterday and it was cool to see the lights/people (as it's "Boardwalk Season"). I haven't been there this year but I'm going tomorrow night! Maybe check out the band on the beach (Smashmouth is playing next week), play some arcade games (I used to go LITERALLY ever day for a solid year, yea, even Christmas), carnival games, and hopefully win a cute prize!
      I love the dime toss, even though I don't ever need anything. hehe!
      I'm not much for rides, but there is a new one since this video came out for anyone interested. They MAJORLY re-constructed a section of the Boardwalk entrance and added the Shockwave Ride.

    I live in Santa Clara, California right behind the Great America Theme Park and Levi's Stadium. I have also been to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. I have been going to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk since my High School days back in the 1970's. It has always been a great place to go. During the Summer Months there are top notch bands that play at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. There is no fee to watch the bands perform. It really is a great place for food and fun!

      Coaster Seeker Never went on any of those. The undertow looks scary, the giant dipper closed before we could get on it, I’ve always wanted to go on the fireball but was too scared, the double shot is super high (125 feet exactly), and loggers revenge was too slow to be going at that height.

    I grew up in the Bay Area. I have countless memories of boyhood trips to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk (and Santa Cruz in general; and Capitola and New Brighton Beach - where I would camp with my family - all of which I highly recommend) and it's an AMAZING place! Very special. I just took a trip to the boardwalk this past summer and it hasn't lost one ounce of its charm or appeal - if anything, it's better than ever! Summer and Spring are the best times to go. To the creator of this video, I hope you got a chance to see Neptune's Palace, ride the Giant Dipper, and the Cave Train! I can't say enough great things about this park - it's truly iconic and one of a kind! Now that I've seen this video I really want to check out Morey's Piers! Thanks for the great content!

    When you take traffic in mind, the boardwalk and great america are NOT 45 minutes apart. 🤣

    • @marig16
      @marig16 6 лет назад +1

      It would take 52 minutes right now, given there is no traffic at 9:30pm. So it would depend when you leave. If you stay tl the park closed...it could be less time, as opposed to leaving earlier in the day when the extreme amount of people all go home.
      You can take HWY 17 all the way up to 880 to intersect with the 101.

    • @BackSeatJunkie
      @BackSeatJunkie 7 лет назад +2

      No. The name comes from the old days when they built wooden decks along the beach or out into the ocean on piers and called them boardwalks......sidewalks made out of boards. They were usually filled with any number of entertainments from dance halls, skating rinks, bowling alleys, movie theaters, food vendors, carnival rides, and roller coasters.

    For the "no boards at the Boardwalk" bit; it was originally a legit Board Walk (1907 was when it was founded). But the rides and buildings are they are now couldn't be supported by wood, as well as any underneath infrastructure. So the wood was gradually replaced with concrete.

    • @marig16
      @marig16 6 лет назад +1

      Maybe it depends. I took the highway 17 bus to San Jose Diridon Station before and it took 30 minutes. That was by BUS! Then you could take the VTA to Great America in Santa Clara.
      So maybe, you could hit it in 45 min if going by car. I mean...at this exact moment (9pm) in the evening...google maps times it at 43 min to get to Sunnyvale from Santa Cruz by car, but 1 hour 25 min via bus.
      OBVIOUSLY if it's Boardwalk Season and you're driving after everyone leaves the boardwalk, you'd never make it in that time, the traffic is stop/go. But if it's clear...at night...then yea you could.
      Take HWY 17 all the way up tl 880, then intersect with the 101 (near the clover leaf)

    I can't believe you only spent almost no time talking about the Giant Dipper. It's one of the oldest roller coasters still running

    There's a more traditional boardwalk (or is it a pier?..) with shops/ restraunts on the other side of the beach acarde area. you just walk down the arcade, cross the beach and you'll see it. like a 5 minutes walk to get there. The boardwalk is pretty long as well.

      I think what you might be talking about is the Wharf (aka a pier)? You can do fishing there, they have some (more highly priced but amazing) restaurants, some shops, Marianne's Ice Cream, and of course the sea lions that hang out under the wharf. =) They're so adorable to watch. Very talkative too. Sometimes you can catch an otter or other wildlife swimming nearby. It's a nice walk and a great view! You can see the Boardwalk from it.
      Yea...walking from one end of the Boardwalk to the wharf and back...is quite the "workout" XD
      Sometimes just walking back and forth on the walk alone is fun and you don't even realize how much walking you've done. haha! When I worked there I would literally run from one end to the other on my break so that I could go to the main arcade and play a game I was addicted to. =D

    It's cool how this has one of the few ring-toss carousels that still exist. *Tries not to Knoebels-fanboy*

    • @TheDrloboski
      @TheDrloboski 6 лет назад

      They took the rings away as they had people walk off with 50,00 to 70,000 a year, When they quit the ring grab and toss the riders went down to less that 50%, so they brought the rings back and are still tossing today. :-)

    Correct me if am wrong but isn't that the oldest all original carousel in the world? The fun house was the best. The reason kids didn't die in it is because you paid attention or you could.lol. The big dipper in the old days. It was a lot more scary then. It seemed like half the wood was rotten.. Yea, you thought you were going to die riding that,lol There was a good chance of it to.lol. Then they had the mouse or the rat it was called, One wild ride. The big brown spinning flat wooden wheel was fun, Plan on some skin burning on that to.lol. The big tumble wheel. No way you could stand up very long. Parents didn't sue, They just bandaged you up and sent you on your way again.lol And Ruth's burgers and oh man that taffy to. Great memories.!!

      No this carousel was built in 1911 by the Looff family. There's also a Charles ID Looff carousel that's older than the Santa Cruz carousel. It was built in 1905 by Charles ID Looff and operated at Luna Park in Seattle, WA from 1905-1911, then moved to San Francisco's Playland in 1913-1972 after Luna Park burned down in 1912
