Little Richard as a street preacher, Bob Balaban as an investigative journalist looking into Iran Contra in real time, G. Gordon Liddy as a black ops dealer, Liam Neeson as an IRA bomber, Brian Dennehy as a televangelist, Bill Russell as a judge who gets into corruption, Bruce McGill as an ex-cop gone rogue, John Heard as a crooked lawyer, and, in perhaps the most brilliant casting scheme ever conceived, Phil Collins as a two-bit game show host who gets in too deep trying to become a player in Miami...

Ed O’Neill is one hell of an actor. He really pulled off scary and psychotic in this episode and as much as he is hugely associated with the Al Bundy character, Al Bundy is quickly forgotten here. The character was really well written. He was scary and tragic. The perfect representation of a cop who has gone off the rails. Deep cover for too long must take a toll on a person’s psyche regardless of how much training he’s had. It’s this realism that defined this amazing series. Right up there with the sopranos as far as quality television. Without a doubt my favorite guest star in my favorite television series!

The phrase “would of/should of” seems to be coming more and more common. I have heard it used in a number of films and have also seen it used in print when the author is depicting direct speech. However, I was amazed to see it used outside of the direct speech context in a novel I am currently reading. I appreciate that “would’ve/should've” could be heard as “would of/should of” but the increasing use of these phrases are damning testimony to the malaise that afflicts our language.

What? The #1 guest star on Miami Vice is also in the #1 greatest Miami Vice episode: “Out Where The Busses Don’t Run”…Bruce McGill is the greatest Miami Vice celebrity ever. That deranged mental nut case that he played, Hank Weldon, was brilliant. I believe that episode won an Emmy. How could it not be Bruce McGill? That episode was my personal favorite…I also liked the one episode called “Bashido” in the second season. Martin Castillo, Edward James Olmos, has to choose between his friendship with his Vietnam buddy Jack Gretzky, and his duty as a Vice Lieutenant. That was a great episode, but it was missing a celebrity cast, excellent episode anyway.

I was too young when Miami Vice first aired. I remember my parents watching it with pleasure and 30 years later I watched it myself and recognized so many now famous actors and other artists. Amazing show. I love every episode but my favourite one is still the one with the mindblowing performance of Bruce McGill and the awesome shot when they followed the Ferrari through a dark and deserted Miami with the camera on another car (all shaky and that but iconic) and Brothers in Arms from Dire Straits is playing. "Out where the buses don't run". I think McGill got the role a few days before they shot the episode because the original actor Dennis Hopper pulled out and so McGill had only days to study his lines. Still one of the best scenes from Miami Vice and all series ever made. This episode was also co-written by John Mankiewicz (grandson of Herman J. Mankiewicz - Mank)

What Frank Zappa's character revealed (that Crockett and Burnett were one and the same person) is what always bothered me about the show. How could all of the dope dealers, pimps, and other bad guys never figure out that Sonny and Tubbs were vice cops and should be shot on sight? They never tried to disguise themselves, and kept appearing week after week as mid-level dealers. What's funny is that they never did any prison time themselves; they were always right back out on the street. Word should have quickly gotten out via the grapevine about who they really were. For Christ sakes, they also had to appear in court to testify to send the bad guys to prison. Members of that dealer's crew would have been in court and could immediately identify them as the vice cops their boss trusted. They wouldn't try to kill them then, but could pick a time of their own choosing to exact revenge a month or two later. Or hire a contract killer to do the job; someone from L.A. or N.Y, who would be unknown to them. Could nobody in Miami put two and two together?

It's a television show and Michael Mann is not known for being logical. He's all about looks and style coupled with pop music.

Ok but do you really want to know what's really "dumb"? In comics, movies or series nobody realizes Clark Kent & Superman are the same person.

Any list like this must begin with Dennis Farina as Al Lombard. Farina is tremendous in all of his acting, but he had multiple appearances on Vice over the years and Lombard always hit the bullseye.

Funny how Frank Zappa played a drug lord, yet in real life he was against drugs and an advocate for the "say no to drugs" . This was most evident in his appearance on Saturday Night Live where he refused to do "drug humour" which was popular at the time.
