  • After an engine rebuild there is always the question... "There's fuel, there is a spark... Will she start now ?!?" LOL
    So let's see what the answer to the question this time is...

    First starts are so nerve wracking! But she turned out OK. Leaks are expected. Good to see 'the chef' there for comedic relief from the stress! I bought a Stella Artois to celebrate the occasion tonight :)

    Good job you guys. Thanks for including all the little bugs and things that always seem to crop up during a typical first firing up. Most TV and RUclips shows would iron out all the reality and just show everything working perfectly first time. What you show is what really happens to all of us when we are working on our engines/cars.

    I liked the observation on temperatures - if you can hold your hand on it, it is less than 50C. We used to scald pig carcasses here on the farm so here is another : If you can stick your little finger in the water twice but cannot bring yourself to do it a third time, the water is ready for the pig (around 62C).

    Great job! Nothing much more satisfying than getting an engine you built running for the first time. I can almost smell the paint curing. 😄👌

    Well done to both of you for getting it going👏👏
    The engine sounded really smooth and will be great once you get the fine tuning done.
    Interesting that this car didn't have a thermostat perhaps they already detected the problem with the sender. The other thought that crosses my mind is if they are affected somehow by the polarity change, can't see why but you never know.
    I don't remember seeing it on the timing cover but are there indications for setting the timing apart from TDC, all will become clear in the next episode I'm sure.
    Can we have a clip of Cheftush's fan club next time please ..... and I don't mean Rusty😆😆😆
    Well done and good luck from Spain!!

    Well done.👍The temperature issue could also be the gauge voltage regulator...

      We thought about that but the fuel gauge seems to be working…normally they would both not work with a bad voltage stabilizer.

    To prime the lubrication system its far better to ensure that: A) the oil filter housing is filled before installation and then B) to take the plugs out and crank the engine on the starter observing the oil pressure gauge.😉

    • @nigelbarton8350
      @nigelbarton8350 Год назад

      Usually I would disagree and say it is better to prime the system by spinning the oil pump directly as Elin did here- on engines where that is possible- as it avoids the engine turning with zero pressure while you wait for it to build. But on this occasion if he had tried spinning it on the starter he would likely have cleared up those problems getting it to turn over properly before going for a start o it may have worked out better for him 😗

    Congratulations on your great work so far Elin.. I seem to remember that the stat housing had a thermostat blanking plate inside when you first stripped it down.. I wonder if that's a clue to the erroneous gauge reading now it's got a real thermostat fitted ?

    Elin, congratulations on a successful first start!
    I wonder if the temperature gauge sender might just be responding to a higher supply voltage due to the charger being in the circuit?
    The engine choke needing to be engaged for it to keep running seems to indicate some carburetor initial settings need to be adjusted?
    Looking forward to watch the 'fine tuning' episode(s)!

    By wrapping PTFE tape around the temperature sender the body of the sender may not be making a good enough earth. Unlikely but worth checking.

    Another excellent andfascinating episode. Just curious to know why you don't use electronic ignition instead of points. It can't be for originality because you've gone to alternator and -ve earth. Also, where and how did you acquire all your knowledge and skills in bodywork and mechanics?

    • @RustyBeauties
      @RustyBeauties  Год назад

      I might suggest that to the owner. I have points on my Spitfire and I am quite happy, but with this car I have the feeling there is something wrong with the distributor. Maybe an electronic ignition might help it run better

  • @RichardHeadGaming

    Test light to temp sensor wire should show a low temp due to resistance, and touching the wire to ground should max gauge for a fast gauge test. Not sure what your particular sensors resistance per temperature is , but if you test the resistance and compare to a known good it ill tell you if it has an internal problem. The sensors should be same resistance when they are at the same temperature.

    One thing I always find is no one ever checks the wipers they just replace I'm guilty of that myself and then later you find that some type of adjustment was needed.
    No one ever thinks check and use the wipers. Lol.

      LOL, I know people would have been anxious at that point to see if the engine starts and I didn't want them to wait for me to check wipers...:)

    I wonder how the ignition timing was set, no strobe light after running for the setting. That is ever the first bevor you calibrate caburator or something else.

    • @RustyBeauties
      @RustyBeauties  Год назад

      The tuning comes in the next episode. This was just the initial start and 30 min run to break in the camshaft. However a strobe light doesn't work very well on these engines because of the vacuum advance and retard at higher RPM. I prefer the vacuum gauge. However on this particular engine I don't have a vacuum port that I could use so we will see how exactly we will set the ignition.

    No pressure Elin but if everything is set up right and double-checked, it WILL start. I hate these videos where people grind on the starter for ages while turning the distributor to find the sweet spot- take the time to set it right first time, and learn how to if you don’t know. I’ve just finished my latest rebuild - 1972 MGB GT- it started first turn. That took me to No 11 consecutive engine rebuilds that have started first time. It’s all in the prep. Good luck!

    • @RustyBeauties
      @RustyBeauties  Год назад +1

      Well, I don't know if you want to watch this one then :) I had some that started the first time, on some I had to grind the starter and some didn't start so.... I don't know which group this one falls in to LOL

      @@RustyBeauties sounds nice once it woke up, I reckon it would have started a lot better if it had just turned over a bit faster. It also kept trying on 1 or 2 cylinders only - I wonder if only one carb had filled up? I’m sure it will be much better with those carbs sorted out properly and balanced. On the temp gauge- it’s not connected to the wrong side of the voltage regulator is it i.e. it’s getting 12v instead of 10.5v?

      Yes, I went through the entire wiring behind the dash before in the early episodes of this series. The temp gauge was working just fine. I am only not sure if I checked it after I reversed the polarity. It shouldn't affect the gauge, but I will have to investigate further.
