Segment 2. Ugh! Hiking through such an open area and when it's hot. Great idea for the umbrellas. I didn't realize there wasn't any water at all until you got to the fire station.
Yeah, super exposed area. There are areas that are still wooded, but plenty more that are not because of an old forest fire. Best to hike segment 2 as early possible. Especially because there is no water between the Platte River and the volunteer fire station. We used our umbrellas mostly for sunny, exposed areas and only a few times for rain.
Last summer was our first CT (me and my 🐾). We had to start on segment 2 because of the Bighorn sheep and we were not prepared for that heat and dried up intermittent streams. My poor dog searched frantically for water. When we reached the firehouse, I think he drank a keg of water. Aside from the scare, it was both challenging and beautiful. We quit for 2021 because of his burned out paws but we’re coming back this summer!
Those first few segments can be quite challenging when it's hot and dry, especially for our fur friends. The Indian Creek Trailhead is a great alternate to Waterton Canyon if traveling with a dog, we really enjoyed it. We remember getting to the fire station and drinking a keg of water ourselves! It gets much better after Segment 2. Such an amazing trail and experience.
People from outside of Colorado don't realize how blistering hot the sun is here. My bro will be starting this week. He has been warned!
It's definitively been super hot in Colorado lately. Segment 2 in the heat of the day with all the exposure, yikes! Truth be told, it was our least favorite segment, nice to get it out of ther way early on.

So Yesi have tagged the segment 2 tree at 63 I will be enjoying the most beautiful tree in Colorado..
It was a great tree! Perfect shade, level area. It was a very hot week, mid 90s, so we definitely took advantage of a cool spot to relax, have some lunch and hydrate before continuing on.
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast as the saying goes. I wish I had eight weeks instead of the five weeks I took to hike the CT. And yes you are right about the fire station, it is an oasis that every hike should gladly donate too.
That fire station was such a welcome sight. Not sure if it was the water (which we needed) or the fact that we were done with the burn scar.
How did you rig up the umbrellas so you had your hands free?
Hi Barbara, we used velcro strips to hold the umbrella to our packs. It can be found in just about any craft section of Target, Walmart or any craft store.
