We took our first turns at Powder Mountain, one of the hidden gems of the Utah ski scene. But a bit of lightning threw a wrench in the day.
    Filmed on March 13, 2022.
Powder Mountain is a ski area in the Wasatch Range north of Salt Lake City, Utah. Our full review will be out before the 2022-23 season.

I was there that day and got stopped at the top of paradise lift for lightning. They had us ride to the bottom through all the fresh pow and then we got snowcatted out of there. Unexpected but crazy fun.

You are leaving out some very essential information. Powder Mountain has 8,484 skiable acres the largest in North American. 3,000 of that is lift serviced. You didn’t mention that skiers can access Woody’s World and Powder Country which drops you off on the Mountain Road where you catch a shuttle bus that brings you back up to the main parking lot. For an extra fee of about $25 per ride you can ride the snow cat which takes you up and drops you off at the top of Lightening Ridge a vast backcountry area. You ski down back to the resort. I am fortunate to lived in a condo ( Wolf Creek) at the bottom of the mountain road and skied Powder full time for 3 seasons 2011-2013. It’s a great mountain to develop your off piste powder and side country skills. However on the downside they have slow lifts and much of the terrain is low angle compared to Alta/ Snowbird. So if you’re looking for steep terrain they don’t measure up if that is what you want.

powder mountain seems like fun, there's several green and blue runs off every lift for newcomers to the sport. The upside downed-ness seems like a challenge to navigate though especially when lightning closes the lifts though. Not to mention that a lot of areas will require you to hike to the nearest lift, or ride all the way down the mountain because most of the runs meet at the Paradise lift at the bottom of the mountain. I'd still recommend it to beginners over something like Snowbird Or Alta.

It needs to stop being referred to as a “hidden gem.” It isn’t hidden when it keeps topping lists over the past few years.

They closed the lifts because of lighting there when i was there. I was one of the last people on the mountain they had to ride a few of us up on snowmobiles. It was really fun.I almost moved to ogden and got a job removing snow there. maybe one day...wait what day were you there. i was there march 5th 2022. i guess they get lighting a lot

Nothing adventurous about standing around waiting for a ride because the antiquated chairlift is shut down. This sort of thing would never happen in Europe, and if a France resort tried it they'd have another revolution on their hands.

Powder mountain sucks. Don’t bother visiting. Unless you know how to ski the toughest back country terrain and have avalanche beacons you can’t ski there. Just let the locals ski there!! Best to go to another state to ski/board, Utah is the worst state to ski in. They charge three times the normal lift ticket rates in Utah for out of staters. Don’t bother planning your winter ski/board vacations in Utah.

For an alleged first world country like America, the ski infrastructure and organisation resembles that of a third world country.
