THE SIGHT & THE SOUND 3/6 : Bouraq Indonesia HS-748 PK-IHV inflight documentary from Bali to Lombok

- This inflight documentary features a short 23 minute flight onboard the legendary Hawker Siddeley HS-748 from Denpasar (Bali) to Mataram (Lombok island). This flight was part of a trip with my family to Indonesia in March 1998.
Yet, my brand new SHARP camera broke down frequently, not to mention the batteries. This camera was the first generation of video cameras with digital recording. Obviously the digital recording technology 18 years ago was still at an experimental stage. The video head got worn out immediately. After a few seconds the camera turned hot and taping was interrupted, especially during the most important phases of taping : Take off and landing. Eighteen years later, I tried to assemble the fractions of this puzzle of video fragments as best as I could.
This is the result. This trip is also the last time I had "the pleasure" to use this disastrous camera.

Love the HS-748. I flew her last back in 1972 on a trip from Manila to Zamboanga Philippines. I was 8 years old then. The sound of those Rolls Royce Dart engines brought back a lot of memories. Thanks for posting.
finding this video on youtube feels like finding a hidden treasure. thank you very much daniel for sharing this video. i've never been onboard bouraq hs-748, and only got the chance to board bouraq b732 once they had already replaced their props fleet. so watching this video is like being onboard on hs-748 myself. and it's really priceless because sadly bouraq was already part of indonesian aviation history. i also enjoy the part 2 of the video.

Great filming. Loving the sound and whine of those Roll Royce Darts …… one of the most successful engines ever built. I had the pleasure of a Royal Nepal Airlines HS-748 flight in 1979 from Kathmandu Nepal to Patna, Bihar, India. It was a real thrill!
Good to see some of the Indonesian classic airliners and airlines flying back in the day (when I am still a small kid back then, i was born in 1995).

Mengenang masa laluku tahun 1990 mulai kerja di Bouraq airlines di bagian Teknik sampai punya ijazah dan licence pesawat HS748. Dan tahun 1994 aku hijrah ke Airlines lainya. Love you Bouraq airlines.

28 years ago im fly with bouraq from tarakan to balikpapan use this type of aircraft. the sound of the engine remind me. i always wait the engine running. My father always let me sit side of window... that the amazing experience flying with bouraq airlines. im sure that this airlines will come back again...i hope

Sound like a Saab 340's CT7 turboprop engines! I love HS748, i missed those planes back to those old days. Calm Air, Air North, Air Creebec, and First Air, they all Canadian airlines. Calm Air has been long time to operating their HS748 since 1970s until they were scrapped in late 2015. I surely Roll-Royce Darts are the best!
That aircraft was the original bird of the Caribbean. LIAT was one of the operators of the HS 748 and I remember calling them 'Avro LIAT' as a kid growing up in St. Vincent. I miss those deafening but sweet sound of the RR Darts. 😃
With the passengers boarding from the rear, it's possible to "Hot Load" with both the port and starboard engines running. This aircraft must have the famous "Rolls Royce Dart" engines, which have a distinctive sound to them. To me, they sound like vacuum cleaner engines, like my families Hoover Convertible that we had when I was growing up. I've read that many people love the sound of the Darts. The Darts seem to produce a significantly louder ear splitting jet whine than the Pratt & Whitney engines of the DeHaviland Dash-8. It's my understanding that the thing in a jet engine that produces that whine is the centrofugal compressor. Another name for these engines is "Gas Turbine" engines.
In this video, when the engines are spooled up to high idle, the props make your 'basic box" fan sound. In takeoff, when the props are rotated at 1,500 RPM, the props make what I call the "Bumblebee" sound, creating the bass hum and vibration, heard inside the cabin of your typical turboprop airliner. In this video, over the bass hum of the props, you hear the whine of the jet engines. This video reveals that the turboprop engine is indeed a jet propeller engine, and not a turbocharged piston engine.
The Vickers Viscount had the Darts, and in videos that I've watched of the Viscount, it's interesting that the sound of the props is virtually inaudible over the whine of the Rolls Royce Darts. It must have to do with the design of the props, and the tips of the prop blades.
i flied bouraq from manado to jakarta, 6 hours with multiple stops and turbulances. it was great experiences, i always kept the peanuts for my kids.😄

Pernah sy jg naik bouraq rute jkt-pgk pinang th 95... yg vickers viscountnya itu (mesinnya 4).. papa aja ada bilang, kalau pesawatnya bising bukan main.. di mana saat itu kursi 2 baris diisi 3 org, dan kursi 3 baris diisi 5 org... itu bs dibilang pas bouraq lg gawat2nya...
Bagasi penumpang taruh dimana? Pastinya tdk di ruang bawah sperti seperti pesawat umumnya, kalau taruh di ekor belakang itu kecil sekali ruangnya
Bagasi penumpang disimpan di cargo compartment, letaknya antara cockpit dan kabin penumpang. Sama seperti Fokker F27 atau ATR72 yang sekarang dipakai maskapai Wings Air, NAM Air, Citilink.
