Just like any metal/concrete structure, when exposed to the elements and attack from the environment (in this case, fire and earthquake), it will weaken the structural integrity. Eventually, it can't hold its own weight anymore and gravity will take it down. Supporting beams and colums on the base tend to be the thing that gives way since all the weight is on the base. Weaken beam=cause for collapse
