Yeah but the Actor wanted his character's name to be Viktor.
It's a female name in some countries. Also, Vanya is a kind way of saying Ivan. And there is also a female name Ivana. And all of these names are originated from John or Yohanan, so if you really want to connect it all it will be Ivana-Ivan as a Slavic and Vanya-John/Ian/Yohanan as a European.

I liked how smoothly they changed the character in the show to be just like the real life actor. That was so cool and I can respect Netflix for doing that to make him more comfortable
Ellen Page or Elliott page you are still one of my favorites and I love you for that it's a lot to process but you are still the same person I know and love and that doesn't change my feelings towards you you're still one of my favorite actors that I've known since I was a kid

I might get a lot of hate, but this ruins Vanya's character. The sudden change came out of nowhere and so fast, saying "this is who I've always been" is a slap in the face for Vanya fans. To get this straight, I'm not against Transgender characters, at all, Jules from Euphoria and Kuina from Alice in Borderland are some of my favorite characters. But this was obviously forced cause of the actor coming out, if you're thinking I'm being unfair, take literally any character you've known for 2 seasons and suddenly gender swap them in one episode without any hints or buildup to it.

Well the actual actor transitioned in-between seasons, so they didn't really have much choice. They didn't exactly know Elliot Page would transition ahead of time. At least they made the change so that he doesn't have to play a female character. It also didn't really change that much, to be honest. He's the same character, but now he's a boy.
I don’t think it ruins the character, let’s give them a chance to flesh it out, but I agree it was storytelling whiplash (it was added post script lockdown. To be fair It’s often like that in real life though, people feel confident to come out as trans in one moment and not everyone can sense it coming.
Does it really change that much tho? Like it's just that he's a man now. All the experiences are still the same, the gender doesn't matter. Tua doesn't heavily rely on romantic relationships so i think it's not a big deal

This scene and the scene with Luther wanting to throw a coming out party for Viktor but Diego told him to not make a big deal out of it. It might weird Viktor out but they all just love their new little brother.
I think that scene realistically highlighted how a trans person coming out affects those around them. It is difficult to completely change how you see someone, or know how best to act towards that person, even if you do fully support and love them. As someone who has experienced two friends coming out as trans, these scenes are accurate in their awkwardness.

Trans individuals will always tell you “it’s who i’ve always been.” This is true, but also, the way they presented themselves formerly is essentially a mask. Although they remain in the same body, sometimes trans people look at theirselves as a “different person.” This could also even be a coping mechanism to escape any trauma or abuse or anything from the past they don’t like. So it really depends! And it’s not something people expect you to know either. It’s not polite to ask, and all you can really do is assume unless they correct you.
I love how they didn't make a big deal out of it. They've seen so much insane stuff they genuinely are just like "sure. Cool. Shut up still."

I'm pretty sure they had higher priorities than to give script writers a heads up about one of the most personal decisions a person can make. It's not lazy writing, if anything it's the epitome of what a trans person wants to experience when they come out.

The plot is actually fitting, considering how Viktor was always trying to find himself. And it was executed perfectly. That’s why TUA is one of the best shows.

This character didn’t “earn” this transition. Bc before Ellen transitioned to Elliot this was not the arc for the character. They did this to either appease Elliot or woke culture. That's the extreme side. I would have loved too see a few more questions about it. The acceptance felt too quick coming from diego/5 and Allison who generally have a hard time accepting changes. Klaus is character makes sense to react like that.

Plus Allison just got back from dealing with discrimination in the 60s, so I bet she didn't want anyone else to feel that. Even if Five had an issue with it, he's too tired to care. Diego has always cared for all of them and never wants any of them to feel unloved, even though he can lose his cool, this doesn't seem like the sort of thing to set him off.

My brother is trans, my ex partner is trans too and I've known both before they came out as trans. It came as a slight surprise, but I'm not upset with them or anything, I'm just happy they are comfortable enough with me to share that with me. I think it's nice that Elliot now plays a man, I bet he's more comfortable this way, and it's also just cool to see healthy trans representation. This wasn't rushed and it felt natural. Is the real problem not cishet people assuming everyone to be cis and heterosexual? As a queer person I'm not surprised at all when I meet another lgbtq+ person or see someone come out on a tv show, maybe I feel a bit excited, but most of the time I just find it normal. People who don't find it normal probably don't know many trans people (or lgbtq+ ppl in general) in real life

I think it definitely would’ve been Diego he offends everybody and doesn’t care. That could’ve been a fun moment of conflict that they would’ve had to work through naturally which would’ve been a great opportunity for viewers to see how things can be worked through when they’re uncomfortable. But no. Completely unrealistic instead.
I think part of it was for the plot to move quickly without making a big deal out of Viktor’s transition, and also because having any protagonists be transphobic would ruin the character. So it’s understandable that they would just write everyone to be super accepting. And also the Umbrellas a family with superpowers and much bigger problems so it’s probably not a big deal to them 😂
In my opinion it was a bit unrealistic that Harlan accepted it so quickly - “Allison called you Viktor, is that what I should call you?” - given that he grew up in Texas in the 60s. But again his character is meant to be loved and sympathized with and it wouldnt work if he was written as a bigot
@@MalissiaCreatesit would’ve been interesting to see some kind of growth from transphobia to acceptance yeah. Or I think maybe they could’ve at least shown other characters accidentally slipping up on the name/pronouns out of habit, which is really common and not malicious. But idk maybe the showrunners needed this part to not interfere with the main plot too much and wanted to move past it quickly, which is unrealistic, but understandable from a writing perspective

But then, again, I like the challenge to make my characters seem relatable and self-aware, and true to their idiosyncrasies. Especially when Allison lost it on victor, I think that would’ve been a great opportunity because Allison was stepping over the line and even the siblings were like OK “we don’t fight like this”.

The creators of the show (and the creator of the comic, Gerard Way) were all on board with Viktor being a trans man. There is absolutely no narcissism. Narcissism is a love of one's own self--Elliot Page did not tell them to change the character; the creators changed the character as a gesture of acceptance and love for Elliot.

maybe because he grew up in America? Russians know its a masculine name but to most people it definitely sounds like a feminine name
maybe he doesn’t like the name and he probably associates it with his identity pre-transition and before finding himself so he wants a new start imo

What bothers me about this is that an actor shouldn’t have to have a part tailored to their real life, then it’s reality tv. Gay actors have played straight men, straight men gay parts. Pages personal choice shouldn’t have had to change the character when it’s not canon. Either Paige should’ve done the job of an actor, pretend and act, or recast the role. This just reaffirms this whole generation who thinks the world should bend to them
The actor was actually 100% fine with continuing to play Vanya. The writer insisted on changing it and tbh I think it worked out as smooth as possible.

I def get the concern you have tho but in this instance it just kinda seemed like it was just a decision made. Announcements were made cause fans were genuinely confused and in the show it was kinda like “oh ur viktor now? Cool, ur still dumb”.

I love how they included Viktor in a subtle way, like, no big deal. Otherwise they would’ve created a whole “drama thing” like in other shows and it would’ve ruined both the show and the oportunity to include a transgender character in it.
Its stupid they changed the character if the actor/actress whoever wants to change theirself thats fine but adaptating something dont change it!
the actor transitioned and at least for me personally i wouldn't want to act as a woman because that would make me uncomftorable.
