  • Explains capsizing lever, angle of loll, what happens at AOL, examples & how to correct the situation.
    Note : Correction at 0: 33, underwater area referred is actually underwater volume and geometrical centre of same is COB

    if you discharge the high tank first the CoG also shifts to the lower side creating a moment in the undesired direction?!
    I cant imagine this would be the right approach, it doesn't feel logical either.
    Can someone elaborate on this please?

    I got 90% of the concept. 1 thing I couldn't understand? Why is it a dangerous situation? Since it will "oscillate" around the angle of LoL? How will the ship capsize since it will always return to angle of lol?

    Sir what will be the angle of loll on the other side when the vessel flips over to the other side by the action of waves etc.?

    • @sailorstube3259
      @sailorstube3259  6 лет назад

      Hi Harsh. As the vessel flips over it will go to angle of loll to another side. However as there is no stopping lever vessel may heel slightly more than angle of loll. However it will try to come to angle of loll by oscillating slightly. The danger with filiping over is that there could be sufficinet momentum gained and the absence of stopping means make it vulnerable to capsize.

    Good day sir,
    Sir I have doubt, pls solve it, as you have shown in your video initially that km is negative, with the small shift of COB, sir I have understood that with the shift of COB initially KM increases up to a certain angle of heel and then it start decreasing. so how is it possible that with small shift of COB, KM will get negative. because it shows that ship is heeled to the maximum angle of heel, and if it already reaches to maximum angle of heel, how is it possible that it will again start getting positive.
    I know sir am very junior to ask this, I had got a doubt so am asking this.

    • @sailorstube3259

      I can presume your are saying initial GM is negative ( you have written KM negative), that is KG is greater than KM or COG is quite high, the ship is in unstable equilibrium. As the vessel heels, KM will increase and will coincide with KG, that is the situation of angle of loll. KM is the function of metacentre which depends upon on COB. The COB is nothing but geometrical center of underwater volume . So if a vessel at angle of loll heels further, geometrical centre of underwater volume will also shift towards lower side .This will create small righting lever. Please watch the video two three times and pause a while when you do not understand .

    Thanks very much Sir. Ballasting lower side tanks first will also create a listing lever and the ship may list over the angle of lol, but with righting movement. Please add that with a help of GZ curve and will be very beneficial.

    Centre of buoyancy is the centroid of the under water volume and not area..

      Thank you very much for pointing the same. Yes , COB is geometric centre of underwater volume .
