Theater South's production of The Outsiders

  • I was plenty optimistic that Bloomington High School South's theater group would make January 30, 2016 a night to remember. I was half right, because they actually made it a night to hardly ever forget. Now, for the purists out there, I'll warn you; this stage production was cleverly modernized, and rightfully so. This became a tale originally set in in the latter half of the 1960's, told through a book and sold for movie rights, both making an iconic impact after their publication, with a theme that's never been diluted in school systems abroad: The almighty class/clique conflict. But you'll see the same characters, just donning skinny jeans and cell-phones, still delivering the original poignant message from the first time you took in the book and/or watched the movie. From crew to cast, phenomenal job last night.
P.S. Another reason I was elated to take this in was watching Hayden as Darry. Anyone from my closing teen years, some family included, might remember how many times I got approached by people saying 'You look like General Orry from that show on TV" (The civil war series, "North and South"). Red Dawn, Youngblood, Dirty Dancing, any time Patrick Swayze put out another flick, I would get double-takes. So you can imagine how it profoundly resonated in me when I found out that Hayden got the role of Darry, the role Patrick Swayze was billed for in The Outsiders.
As I left Carmichael Hall, I only had two thoughts on my mind: Rendering this video tonight and whether to pick up Starbucks on my way home...

"When I want my kid brother to tell me what to do with my other kid brother, I'll ask you, Kid brother"
    -Darrel
    "Stay Gold" - Johnny
"It seemed funny to me that the sunset she saw from her patio and the one I saw from the back steps was the same one" -Ponyboy
"Things are rough all over" -Cherry
"You get tough like me and you don't get hurt" -Dallas
I can't think of anymore but these are some of my favorite quotes😌

Unpopular opinion- this is actually decent. Pony acted pretty well, the characters were likable, and the narrative is still solid. Plus, this gives me early 2010 vibes, so there you go.

I love Green Day’s 21 Guns and I enjoyed the modernized version of the Outsiders. The song kinda fits because it’s about depression and being bullied.
And the Socs are bullies towards Ponyboy and Johnny.

The acting for the most part is great but the clothing choices, music choices, and sets are very questionably anachronistic
