Inmotion V11 vs V11y: Review by a daily commuter

  • I upgraded by v11 to a v11y and learned several things that weren't on other reviews of the v11y, so I made my own video.
    Benefits of each:
    V11 has better headlight (IMHO), is more compact, looks better, has a USB charger, and is actually faster! This last point is counter to Inmotion marketing -- see below for more info.
    V11y has better (but still not great) pedals, lower pedals, bumpers (though you could stick these on a V11), a better mudguard. Most importantly, the internals are safer -- bigger MOSFET, Smart BMS, more water resistant so (theoretically) less likely to cut out due to a failed board, bad battery cells, or water entrance. It also seems to have a more conservative safety margin for speed than the V11, so you go slightly slower but you are theoretically safer.
    The safety upgrades make it worth it for me. I'd rather lose 1-2mph and not fall on my face. See • Do NOT Buy These EUCs! and wrongway.info/comparisons-1 for a great safety overview of all wheels out there.
    *Note on speed: when you unlock "fancy mode" on the V11, I found that I get tiltbacks at around 34 and I can ride at 37 fairly easily. However, on the V11y tiltbacks start at 52kmph (32mph) and get most aggressive at 58kmph (36mph) (I confirmed these numbers with Inmotion directly). In practice, I find it difficult to get past 36mph on the V11y and am usually around 34 on it. Whereas I would often ride the v11 at around 35-36mph. This was a bummer to me because I was expecting the V11y to be faster. However, I'd rather have safety than speed, and some people were getting high-speed cutouts on the V11 (yikes!). I commute daily on these wheels, with a full face mountain biking helmet and wrist guards. I don't think I should go faster than 30ish without wearing full ice hockey/motorcycle gear, and putting on all that armor getup just isn't worth it to me for 20 minute trips around town, especially if you need to dip into stores without looking like a tank.
    What I love about either V11 or V11y is that you can get anywhere fast enough, and you can also take it into stores and up and down stairs without it being a massive eye sore or terrifying contraption. The V11y is one of the safer wheels, and the shocks are good enough to make it a smooth ride. It's fun and does well enough off road. I wouldn't want a bigger or a smaller wheel. It's the all-arounder. It doesn't do trails or speed as well as some others, and its not as nimble/light some others. But people who go faster than this are just pushing the envelope too far and they will make society think that EUC's are not safe (which will result in tighter legislation). For daily everywhere use, it's just right. It's the wheel to get if you just want one wheel.
    Oh, I should mention that it's fairly awful to work on. Expect about 6 hours lost when you need to change the wheel. I wish they made an EUC that was designed modularly like the V14 but similar in speed/size/looks as the V11 (not all orange and ugly)- that would be the perfect wheel. Until someone makes that, I think the best wheel out there is still the V11y.
    While I'm on a wishlist: I also wish someone would make a modular, safe wheel with shocks like the v14 but at a form factor that's even smaller than the V11y. The V11y is too heavy for some riders (maybe if you weigh less than 130lbs?) but unfortunately, the v11y is currently the lightest wheel with shocks that meets high standards for safety.

    I LOVE that this isn't a comparison by some "seasoned" well known youtuber and that it is done by a real world casual euc rider. Thank you for the video!

    Great video. I've put 5500 miles on my V11, it's a very reliable machine. It's well balanced across the board as a smooth commuter that offers just enough performance, comfort, and utility for novice riders. The pedal height makes it a little hard to learn on, but anyone with balance can adapt to it quickly. My only gripes about the V11 are the amount of time it takes to disassemble and change the tire, and the fact that almost every V11's tail light dies out after a few thousand miles. It's a lovely upgrade from any ebike.

    Haha, man, I have the same exact opinion regarding the orange stripe and bumpers. Its really off-putting to me, I dont understand why so many EUC manufacturers are using that damn orange^^ Keep em black! So I will be doing the same thing as you, spray painting the shell and bumpers.
    Thanks for the review, Ive been waiting for a V11Y review^^

      Top speed I got to was just under 37 a couple times, going downhill. Usually max speed is around 34 because tilt back is pretty aggressive

    What tire did you put on the V11? I'm still new but felt like the V11Y's tire wants to fall off that center strip/tread. I'm used to it now but would like something more neutral.

    Desperate to find an answer to these questions…
    1. Can you put the V11Y pedals on the V11 ?
    2. Can you put the V11Y pedal brackets on the V11 ? If not, can you put the V11Y sliders on the V11 (which would allow you to put the Y pedal brackets)?
    I own a V11 and overall, that’s my only gripe (pedal height). Thanks :-) !

    The suspension for me is why I’ll. Ever buy the v11 again. If they just fix the suspension it’s a great wheel.

      It's good enough for me as I'm not a trail rider. One benefit of the way they've done these shocks is its less weight, which is important to me as I commute with it daily

    I didn't notice any tilt back while I'm over speeding my V11 sometimes. It just beeps and stays behind me, so I immediately know it has been overpowered. Also, V11y with this orange straps looks awesome in my opinion not as boring as v11, but it is just me.

    Check please if the Y has its speed limit unlocked in the app, that might be the reason for early tiltbacks..

    • @lukewarming
      @lukewarming  24 дня назад +2

      Yes speed limit is fully unlocked. Max speed in app is 37mph. There is no "fancy mode" on the V11y.

    • @lukewarming
      @lukewarming  24 дня назад +2

      I had inmotion analyze my trip data and they confirmed that the tilt backs I mentioned were how they designed it.

    • @WeiFinder
      @WeiFinder 11 дней назад

      Why would they lie about the speed being higher? Kind of a crummy thing to do.

    • @lukewarming
      @lukewarming  11 дней назад

      I think the deal is that it's technically true if you ride the v11 in normal mode, not "fancy mode." I also think the tilt back on the v11 in fancy mode probably isn't aggressive enough as it should be for safety (why some people were getting high speed cutouts, and why I'm probably too easily able to get up to 37 on it). Vs v11y top speed really is 37. And in practice more like 35 with occasiona 37s

    So basically, it's the same wheel- with a few add-ons. Using a few parts that everyone in the community is already making. Just like all the "new" Inmotion wheels...smh. I guess it's a good way to get rid of old stock.
    Bob Yan left, so did Inmotions soul. The V13 didn't blow us away, and he left.
    Now they just copy. The V14 is basically a Begode wheel. It seems they've absolutely given up....smdh
