"[Nomi's] gaunt face and sunken eyes reveal the suffering of a dying man. However, at the moment Nomi sings the word “death”, his eyes widen, suddenly infused with vitality and defiance. Through sheer will, Nomi wrestles with the note, refusing to let it defeat him. At the end of this feat, the slight and dignified upward inflection of Nomi’s head indicates to the viewer that he has won."

He's dying, walking with difficulty. He knows that, nobody else knows, singing for the last time, giving all of his astonishing talent, alone in the lights. Every frame breaks my heart : the song itself is wonderful and he sings about his own death. What really makes me cry is the last frame : his eyes are dead, and Klaus Nomi shakes his head, suddenly alive, expressing "I did it".

    What Power art thou,
    Who from below,
    Hast made me rise,
    Unwillingly and slow,
    From beds of everlasting snow!
    See'st thou not how stiff,
    And wondrous old,
Far unfit to bear the bitter cold.
    I can scarcely move,
    Or draw my breath,
    I can scarcely move,
    Or draw my breath.
    Let me, let me,
    Let me, let me,
    Freeze again...
    Let me, let me,
    Freeze again to death!

It's almost too much to watch. You can see the disease taking over, the fragility of Klaus and the careful steps he takes, and hear the pain and longing in the performance. AIDS was a mystery disease at the time, and this song so beautifully reflects the feelings and mood of that time (even if it was written centuries before).
    All in all...breathtaking.

I see Klaus Nomi had a strong inner drive to perform and sing 'The Cold Song' from Purcell. Though fragile and at the same time a strong man, he wants his audience to know in a very powerful way what is right in front of him. Death! It is showing his courage and vulnerability. In my opinion he is an example for everyone. Live and express yourself with your abilities and creativity. No matter what people might think of you.

This is my favorite performance of Nomi. The anguish and sorrow I see in his eyes... truly, seeing this performance brings me tears of joy and sadness. I believe this was filmed mere months prior to his death. He didn't exude talent, he was just him, being the triumphant, simple man that he was personified in Nomi. A tragic loss to arts and music and the world... If you turn his name 180 clockwise, it reads 'I WON'.

I can't be the only person physically bothered by this performance. The guy died months later from AIDS, which becomes painful only weeks after it starts to "hit". This guy is as skinny as a rail, his face looks like its carved out of stone, and the failures of his breathing techniques and the desperation to hang onto the notes like a hero all show a dying man singing about a dying slowly and agonizingly. You just can't write this stuff. My favorite performance of all time, hands down.

Absolutely amazing. I'v only just heard about Klaus a few days ago and his music was before my birth but hearing his voice especially during this performance is chilling. What a beautiful set of vocal chords he had!

This is such an incredibly powerful and sad performance. Around this time, he had new management that separated him from the people that supported him from the beginning and had him, at his sickest, on a grueling schedule. They clearly wanted to wring every drop of performance they could get from him before he died.

  • @binky25

Most amazing male vocal performance ever! The passion and sincerity of Nomi's performance are extraordinary! He not only understands the lyrics...he was living them and shared them with everyone through his voice. Perfection!

I have posted here before, but can't watch this video without further sharing of thoughts. This man was so incredible, even on the tinny, ill-suited video technology available and used to record him. This man was a master of voice, this man stood and looked out to us with mysterious demeanor. I wish I could have seen and heard this man. My extreme, sorrowful loss.

Right on the final "death" line, his look starts like he's detached from the performance, introspective. Halfway in, his eyes fleet, glancing, back to performing. There's something in that moment, its tender, pure, mournful.
