Happy New Year everyone! We're catching up on posting some older videos from last year until our first press trip of the year on Jan 17th! The Kicks has the potential to be a really fun SUV but until Nissan adds AWD, a turbo engine, or a hybrid option, we find its competitors to be far more appealing.
Apparently it is already very appealing based on sales and for most people front wheel drive with snow tires does a good job of handling the snow without AWD. Likewise, for the vast majority of buyers, the performance is fine, especially around town. Of course a 250+ HP AWD model would be nice except it would probably cost $35k+ plus and not sell. That's one of the problems with reviewers. They only see things from their perspective which is almost universally about acceleration and handling.
So help me.... want a small SUV, remote engine start, heated seats, and the latest safety features, but don't want to spend over $30,000. Where to you?
Yes, we all know the 🆒 factor is not going fast but really getting all the tech and safety features (360 camera, full LED front + fogs on the SR trim, blind spot monitoring, heated front seats) at such a low price. Also, the 1.6L Versa engine I heard is very reliable. Lastly, since it is such a small engine, it sips gas so no automatic engine shut off at stop signals like some modern new cars (very annoying and unappreciated as a driver and rider).
Some folks don't need to go 0-60 in 3 seconds . Nor do they need to exceed the speed limit by 30+ mph . They are more interested in point A to point B as cheap as possible . Also these reviewers are all just stating their opinion . Nothing more .
merging on the highway shouldn't be scary or sketchy, having more power dose not mean speeding all the time, but it dose make a difference in day to day driving. More power means more confident merging, passing, moving up from a red light... It's literally safer for you and everyone around you for your car to not be a slow when your trying to make a turn or pull out onto the road from a parking lot where most accidents tend to happen... Not everyone needs a 500 BHP sports car but being scary slow in comparison to almost every other car on the road can be a hazard itself... You not needing to take more then 10 seconds to make a turn or pull out of lot could be the difference in causing an accident that didnt need to happen. The Hyundai Elentra Hybrid in Blue trim is about as expensive as this, has most of the same options, has WAY more power, better ride and gets over 55 MPG on gas consumption... This things just unacceptably slow for how much gas it drinks by today's standards.
I have a 22 kicks and have no issues with it's performance. It's comfortable, carries everything that I need, and is affordable. No car payment for me!
@@mieshiabrooks8209 - we paid 27k for the mid trim level. Also paid 3k for an extended warrenty for 10 years, bumper to bumper except for normal stuff like break pads and tires. It's red. Very happy with its android phone navigation integration.
I own a 2021 Kicks SR and I have no complaints. The car is slow, but I got no problem on the highways. Going up steep hills is a bit more of an issue though. This car is a good value and I'd take it over a Hyundai Venue, Jeep Renegade, Ford Ecosport, or Chevy Trax anyday. I am always annoyed at people judging economy cars like they are supposed to be sports cars. This car gets me from point a to point b safely and effiently. That is all I need.
Definitely love my Kicks SR.. Had it for a year now and zero issues. I don't need a fast car living in the city. Great tech features, great sound system and looks very stylish with black finish along with black rims and tints.
I feel like the kicks gets much unneeded hate just because it’s popular to hate on. People buying this won’t care about speed. It’s affordable and it comes with good tech. Objectively it’s slow but comes with good tech
The point is that there’s more to a car than just good tech. I’d take a more sophisticated engine and better build quality over a dumb speaker in my headrest any day. It just represents everything wrong with modern cars. All about the appeal and “standard features” but with no actual substance and quality. Nissan took away the Juke and replaced it with this in just the North American market. The Kicks was a cheap econobox meant for developing nations (because of the higher ride height) and they decided we deserved it too. It’s just BS.
We have had our Kicks for about 4 months now. We are very pleased so far. The car has very good fuel mileage and is comfortable to drive. Its not as quick as the Ford Fusion turbo that we traded in but its quick enough for our needs.
The reference point of this review of this is terrible. It's almost like he thinks it should be a $50k SUV and criticizes it for not being that. All the things he wants would push the price up to close to $40k. I bought one for a friend and she loves it. Acceleration is not a problem on/off the freeway. Most reviewers find the seats very comfortable. My C8s seats are firm and very comfortable. Terrible, negative review.
If you're paying $26 K for a nice decked out car, ya it should have more than 122 HP. That's a deal killer for me at that price. Fully decked out for $20 K... ok sure. Not asking for much, but they can't at least put in 20 - 25 more HP ?? How much more could that cost Nissan ? Would probably sell more and I believe be a little safer on the roads.
People need to stop calling this car an SUV or even a CUV. It's a HATCHBACK. It's a modern formfactor hatchback which is just a little bit taller than the traditional height of a hatchback, such as a VW Golf, or Mazda3. 10.9 second 0-60 is still faster than my Chevy Spark, and I've never really had any complaints about its acceleration performance. Crazy to think 40 years ago, it wasn't uncommon to have 0-60's in the upper teens or 20's.
I test drove one a few months ago, and I thought it was fun to drive! Yes my '06 Frontier will run circles around it, but it's a fun little vehicle to cruise around in! Maybe Nissan could offer some type of chip upgrades and tranny options, which could definitely put some more "kicks" into that car!
It has a ctv transmission. It's a belt drive transmission. It can't take lot of power. My 91 nx2000 was a far better vehicle. More power the same amount of room.
Why do people judge this car so much its a vehicle it does what its supposed to and has good features for a cheap price. If you looking for power them get a model that has that. But don't downplay this is a good starter option for someone who is just getting into cars
Nice review! Although I don’t know if you specified that blindspot warning, lane departure warning, and rear parking sensors with automatic reverse braking come standard on all models including the S, which is pretty impressive considering the price point. It’d be nice for it to have some more power though.
Sofyan, it’s a bargain car for people who don’t care about powerful engines and expensive interiors. What competitors offer AWD and turbo engines for $20-26k? $30k+ cars are not competitors
And Nissan was offering the Turbo Sentra just a few years ago for about $23 K... how do you like that ? Has the economy gotten that rough for them lately in their pricing ??
The point of this car was missed in this review like others have said. Anyone who feels this should watch Savage Geese's review of the Kicks. Comparing the Kicks to others at higher price points is not fair to this car. It offers amazing tech and features for the price of this fully loaded model. It's a shame this review wasn't more positive for what the car is and who it's actually meant for.
I totally agree your perspective. This review keeps mentioning the slowness of kicks'performance. For the people who live in urban area where always stop and go, this is a car they want. Kicks is cheap and a lot lower cost to maintain. I know higher power engine is faster, but that doesn't mean fun to drive sometimes.
I share your opinion. The review doesn’t take into consideration the majority of individuals who want the most bang for their buck and cannot afford enthusiast level cars like he could.
It’s funny how he kept talking about the price point. For the price point it’s a very good car. Not to mention how he said that 31 in the city is bad.unlike Other SUVs I’m not paying 60 or $50 to fill up the tank
This is not bad at all. I rented one (fully loaded SR) in LA and battled it's infamous rush hour traffic... it does everything well, safe, nimble with a nice stereo. It's fast enough and got good MPGs. Under normal driving, it does not feel like aCVT. They did a good job. I wish it was a little cheaper but the performance economy balance is good.
Nissan Kicks is an ok vehicle/suv ... Nothing special, quite ordinary ... Was surprised to see media/controls screen integrated into the dash itself. Many more expensive vehicles just have screen protruding up from dash, which just looks cheap, IMO ...
gotta appreciate the condescending, sarcastic chuckle that this 20K sub-compact-in-an-SUV-body doesn't conform to the high and mighty standards of the 50-70K decked out vehicles. how dare that car.
Exactly I've been saying this for a long time, this guy is biased against anything japanese, so I always take a HUGE grain of salt when watching his videos.
The kicks isn't that bad. People buying this aren't concerned with wireless car play, AWD, and other premium features you keep referencing. That's why there's a Rogue Sport.
Nice enough car, but I dont get the dig on halogen lights. There are LED replacements available and if things break, you are not on the hook to replace the full light kit for 500$ a pop.
@@philsalley3278 I think the design elements and overall look of a modern day full-LED headlight assembly is popular these days. While you can usually replace a halogen bulb with a LED bulb, these days the style can be valued more than the cost or practicality.
@@philsalley3278 Right... Probably not the person in the market for a $20-26k entry level vehicle doesn't care. Not that they don't want nice things, more that its a cost conscious person likely getting that car. Having either option is fine, but the negativity for what the car is doesn't match. Its like a Mirage with a bit more to it.
I think LED bulbs are one thing. It's just a bulb and is suppose to last longer and is very useful. But I really dont get thos led strips and stuff they look super cool. But I have no idea how your suppose to replace those. And then there is my 4Runner. Each tailight has like 12 led bulbs. I dread the day when those go out.
@@baronvonjo1929 When is the last time most people have replaced a front or rear light on their car? I think LED lights will last a lifetime but other than headlights where they do a much better job, does it matter. Yes, they look better, but when is the last time you looked at your cars lights coming or going.
Nissan needs to be selling e-POWER cars in America. They totally missed the boat on hybrids and basically gave that market to Toyota over here. With e-POWER being a series hybrid, it's different enough to make it stand out from the Toyotas. I'd like to at least have that option, while EVs are still pretty expensive.
it is sad because it actually rides nice and is easy to drive.I rented one for a trip and you literally had to plan HWY passes--BTW a CVT does not give an advantage in fule mileage on the HWy--especially if you go with traffic that is usually going 70 plus mph.I bought a CX-30 and it is by far the best in the class--def worth the extra 7k or so over the price of this--the MAzda is also faster and better equipped then an Audi Q3 and those are 45k plus.
they definitely missed a big opportunity by not offering a model with the 2.0L turbo-four or the new 3 cylinder turbo. As for me I'd only be interested if they offered a nismo rs 😜
I see a decent amount of Kicks here in Florida (Land of the "Every 9th Car You See Will be a Black Smoot Spewing Bro-dozer"). I mean, people must see some value in the car despite it's cheap interior touches (but also, I mean... it's meant to be an affordable and nice car...)
Probably because it is easy to drive and cheap on price--insurance and gas.I just bought a CX-30 and I see why folks like these type of cehicles--sitting up High and being small with a good view and ground clearance so if you make a minor mistake or come to a big speed bump you will not scrape or ruin your front skirts or undercarriage.Sadly it is not a great HWy cruise simply because it lacks any power--I rented one and you have to plan on passing folks on the HWY.My CX-30 can easily hit triple digit speeds with no effort which makes it perfect for the class.
@@khronin I mean, for my state Florida, if you don't plan to spend a ton of time on high speed roads this isn't a bad value. Yes, it's underpowered but it's fine for off interstate roads (or even decent if you just need to drive 2 or 3 exits down (in other words, a typical urban city/county)). I disagree with this channel, the interior is good value for the price (but then again in Florida you don't really need heated seats, so what do I know). I do know the Kona is growing in popularity around here, along with this. And we're not exactly a state known for liking small affordable cars that offer good value.
This video missed the purpose of the Kicks: The Kicks is a perfect Grandma car. Its one of the cheapest cars you can buy, so Grandma can buy more hair nets and puppy chow with the savings. The trunk is surprisingly large too, so she can fit a month's worth of Depends in one trip. It's stuffed with lots of safety features like Lane keep assist and emergency breaking. The viability is amazing, and the ergonomics are really comfortable for the driver; as getting in and out is a perfect height for Grandma's bum knee, with comfortable seats. Grandma DGAF about being 1 second slower off the line. When it snows, Grandma stays home anyways; she doesn't need AWD which is really a performance feature and not a safety feature. If I'm riding shotgun with Grandma, the Kicks is just fine with me.
@@RamblingOmarr surprisingly I see people who have extra money spending money on Priuses and the Kicks. Luxury cars are marketed to people who can just barely afford it. That's why we have the A class, A3 and so on.
@@joshuabenjaminscott2365 I disagree, they are marketed for people who don't mind spending extra money for extra luxury....It's incredibly fucking retarded to think that an entire car manufacturer built an entire brand of cars just for people to not be able to buy it. That makes absolutely no sense. My parents can afford it🤷🏾♂️ neither of them are broke. The price is the price, now whether you're trying to live above your means has nothing to do with the damn car, that's a YOU thing.... Get your shit together, and you could actually afford it. Why the fuck spend "Extra Money" on something that cost 20grand? WHAT EXTRA MONEY? 20Grand is No money lol
A change of tires to winter from all season would do more than AWD ever will for snow/ice conditions. FWD has a majority of weight over the drive wheels to begin with. I've never wanted AWD and would prefer not having it (if it was offered all the dealers in this area would get that only, needlessly increasing the price of the vehicle).
I have my first awd vehicle and it just became VERY useful in Northern Virginia with the wild snow storm that just hit. I'm driving circles around every other vehicle that's stuck (not literally, I've been helping others). FWD cars and 4wd trucks are all stuck. Not me in my AWD 2010 Toyota Venza.
@@666cemetaryslut This model here is over $26k and the awd altima is 27k. More comfortable, roomier, quieter and refined than this. Now the kicks does start at $19k but a sentra starts around there as well. That's what I was pointing out lol
@@toyota420xp for me it shouldn’t be called a utility vehicle if it doesn’t have a 4wd option. This should be just a hatchback car then. And what do people do if they don’t want a bigger size vehicle but want a Nissan? And like I said before if you don’t want or need awd buy the fwd. Why not open the customer base as wide as possible? I’m not trying to argue just support my opinion.
I’m still happy with my Juke, which has a turbo engine with 188 hp, a sunroof, and especially AWD (a must for snowy winter weather). Pity Nissan didn’t sell enough to bring the new generation Juke here, but the Kicks is too much of a downgrade. I’ll have to try my best to keep my Juke as long as possible.
Good winter tires, or even all seasons, is way more important than AWD. If the snow is bad enough to where snow tires alone can't get you moving then chances are you shouldn't be out in that weather to begin with.
I drove these as a rental with 3 people and luggage to Austin Texas scariest drive of my life when I had to pass or merge imagine putting your foot down and feeling like the car is floating and isn’t going anywhere when cars flying up behind you at 70+ MPH lol plus going up. Hills I was revving 4500 RPMs at only 30 mph
In addition to "cheapening the look" as you say, the absence of leds in favor of halogens is more dangerous. Perhaps the superiority of leds in seeing the road ahead, vs. halogens, should be mentioned in your reviews of all vehicles. Imo, the minimal extra cost of leds over halogens is well worth the added safety factor and in 2022 NO vehicle should be equipped with led headlights.
Dear Redline Reviews, Can you please review an Alfa Romeo or a Maserati? You haven’t reviewed those cars for a while now and you should definitely start out with the Giulia and the high performance Quadrifolgio Variant. Also, talk about the future of those Italian Automakers in one of your videos. Alfa Romeo will go all-electric by 2027 and Maserati has announced an EV version of its GranTurismo sports car. I really hope that someday, you will review an Alfa Romeo or Maserati.
Alfa Romeo last all new model was the 2017 Stelvio Q. I’m an Alfa/Maserati supporter, but trust me, there’s nothing interesting in the current Alfa lineup other than what you’ve already seen 3/4 years ago. Maserati however is going to sell some new interesting models in 2022/2023: MC20, Grecale and the new Gran Turismo, also available as an EV.
@@MeowMochi3 Alfa Romeos def aren't shit. The Giulia QV and Stelvio QV are the best driving cars in their segments. The upcoming MC20 is gonna be great too.
@@kristians2704 depending on your definition of shit, they may/might be best driving driving cars (in top trim) in their segment, but they most of the time like all Italian cars, spend majority of the time in shops for repair. This car is meant for someone who wants to commute to and from work. If you want to race get a Lamborghini or something. Y’all are lame. I love my car and I have no problem going the speed limit or above. Maybe some people don’t know how to drive…
Nissan should have at least given the redesigned Kicks, the same engine that's in the new Sentra. And for comparison, the 2022 Civic lx gives you the 2.0L 158hp engine, full led headlights, and all the latest safety features for about $22,000.
Mine Flys, I removed the air box and replaced with a pod filter. I got my doors blown off by a Volkswagen GTI, but that's about it, gets to 90mph pretty quickly.
Nissan made a perfect small entry level vehicle that's modern and elusive enuff to stake a second glance. Nailed it on the features and equipment. AWD MATTERS ABOVE 150HP!!!! GREAT JOB NISSAN AND I SEE MORE OF THESE ON THE ROAD NOW HERE IN NYC...IN SR TRIM...WITH ITS PREMIUM PRETTY BIGG FACE FACE LIFTED BY DR.HR Rubenhandswoth by way of 2nd Gen...it's looks sharp and fun in tri-state kinda way....NISSAN KNOWS WHAT THERE DOING TRUST ME 👌🏽😊❤️
Still no paddle shifters, I feel like nissan should really make a nismo/awd version like this would be the forthcoming of the juke that would actually sell
The mistake is CVT, I would prefer a five-speed auto. I had a Versa Note.. and it seems like nothing has changed, a real elastic driving experience, the motor roars and then the car accelerates, extremely annoying. I like my Micra, but it's really small.. a classic 4-speed auto (like the Toyota Tercel of the time) you step on the gas a the tires squeal.. but now it's no longer available here in Canada.
Would it of been hard for Nissan to put at least fake exhaust tips or nothing, that cheapy looking little teeny chrome tip just ruins it imo. That looks like something from the 80's and 90's. I dunno if I'd buy it for that reason alone. Such a lovely little vehicle and then that tailpipe! . Wow and 26,000 fully loaded, uh no. 23,000 is still a little much even if you could get it for 23,000 fully loaded. Now 19,000 fully loaded would be a fair deal. Come on Nissan you used to have your cars priced nicely but these days not so much. Nissan used to be my favorite car company but they have lost it with the nicer vehicles the competition has to offer.
do you wanna make it a more fun and fast after brake in just use royal purple oil with k&n air filter and after market oil filter and won’t be underpowered anymore. Royal purple oil increased torque and hp by 5%.
Also 11 seconds 0-60 with no one in the car except for the driver is pretty awful. Imagine what would happen if you had a couple of beefaloes in the car with you and needed to accelerate up to freeway speed?
I guess American roads are quite different, maybe slip roads (on ramps) are shorter, but there are people in Europe buying and driving cars with 12, 13, even 15 second plus 0-60 times and they seem to manage. I've heard people describe 11 second cars as nippy! I wouldn't want a car like that, but some people don't seem to mind.
I’m looking at this car for my 16 year old daughter. One thing I thought was interesting; my BMW M340 xi , 0-60 under 4 sec. actually gets better gas mileage. Lol.
Why are all these car reviews people all about power? If you want to go fast car then buy a go fast car. If you want a small economical car that’s good on gas this is perfect this is what these vehicles are made for not for racing somebody to the red light. I’ve had a 2008 Tacoma for the past 13 years I’m getting ready to trade it in and I am liking this car I don’t care about going to 0 to 60 in five seconds it’s kind of pointless to me.

Sofyan, it’s a bargain car for people who don’t care about powerful engines and expensive interiors. What competitors offer AWD and turbo engines for $20-26k? $30k+ cars are not competitors
chevy trailblazer and buick encore gx, toyota corolla cross, honda hrv, etc
"What competitors offer AWD and turbo engines for $20-26k?" The car they killed off and replaced with this one, the Juke.
SEA'FOAM is all about speed !!
Fact bud
EXCUSESgeese doesn't review anything
Sofyan always acts like he is above driving these cars he reviews yet he calls himself a journalist. I unsubscribed
It’s funny how he kept talking about the price point. For the price point it’s a very good car. Not to mention how he said that 31 in the city is bad.unlike Other SUVs I’m not paying 60 or $50 to fill up the tank
I love my 2018 Kicks SR I don’t care about horsepower. Great deal with price it was worth it. I would trade new 2022 Kicks SR.
Just traded my 2018 SV for a 2022 SR. Pretty happy with it lol
155hp & a 6speed I would definitely buy
I believe a car that gets 6 to 9 seconds to 60 mph is what we all need, great if it is faster but it should not be slower
I agree, as long as it can do 9 seconds and it’s fuel efficient it’ll be a good enough commuter car
Exactly. At my age, anything that happens in 9 seconds is good enough for me :)
You’re giving yourself too much credit. More like 3 seconds ;)
Well i see these everywhere and apparently it works for more than we think. Aint takin up for it just statin what i see on the road.
Nissan Kicks is an ok vehicle/suv ... Nothing special, quite ordinary ... Was surprised to see media/controls screen integrated into the dash itself. Many more expensive vehicles just have screen protruding up from dash, which just looks cheap, IMO ...

Mind blowing that the old Juke had 188 HP, and this thing has 122 miniature horses.
The problem isn't that it has 122hp, it's that it has a crappy CVT. My Jetta only has 115hp and a 6 speed auto, and it's still peppy.
My Hyundai Venue's CVT feels much better than this.
Nice enough car, but I dont get the dig on halogen lights. There are LED replacements available and if things break, you are not on the hook to replace the full light kit for 500$ a pop.
I always love the criticism of non-LED turnsignals. Who on earth cares.

The ePower version of kicks is awesome.
I test drove this car and you are absolutely right about the power. It’s atrocious
it is sad because it actually rides nice and is easy to drive.I rented one for a trip and you literally had to plan HWY passes--BTW a CVT does not give an advantage in fule mileage on the HWy--especially if you go with traffic that is usually going 70 plus mph.I bought a CX-30 and it is by far the best in the class--def worth the extra 7k or so over the price of this--the MAzda is also faster and better equipped then an Audi Q3 and those are 45k plus.
they definitely missed a big opportunity by not offering a model with the 2.0L turbo-four or the new 3 cylinder turbo.

You see truckloads of these things here in Georgia
Yeah this would be the perfect car for my Grandma

Can you hear alot of noise coming from outside while driving? Or it kinda has some noise cancellation?
In addition to "cheapening the look" as you say, the absence of leds in favor of halogens is more dangerous. Perhaps the superiority of leds in seeing the road ahead, vs. halogens, should be mentioned in your reviews of all vehicles. Imo, the minimal extra cost of leds over halogens is well worth the added safety factor and in 2022 NO vehicle should be equipped with led headlights.
You mean "unequipped" with LED headlights...
Are you for or against led headlights?
LED headlights do nothing but blind oncoming traffic. Not a safety feature at all.
