I found my copy of Metroid 2 that I had when I was 10 years old in my parents' basement not too long ago. I popped it in my game boy and low and behold, my save file was there. My 10 year old self had given up because there was no internet back then. I dove back in, realized that I was still lost, went online found my way out and beat the game 30 years later.
One of the best things about gaming these days, in my opinion as an older gamer, is revisiting games from years back and getting past those moments that held us up for so long. It's like unlocking lightning in a bottle.
The first video on this channel I watched was actually the "Metroid Memories" one where you two tell about how you discovered the franchise back then. I just discovered the franchise myself back then in 2013 and looked for anything Metroid-related. Spin-Off and remakes aside, Dread is actually my very first brand new Metroid and I can't wait to play it. Metroid aside, this is one of my favourite channels on RUclips since back then - greetings to you and thanks for all the great stories through the years! :)
I have to admit that I've never gone deep into the Metroid series, but the discussion you guys have had about the series makes me want to look into it.
It’s not a rewarding trip. Metroid is a game that is meant to be vague and have a very light story. But there are certain types of gamers who cannot handle lack of detail. So they obsess and make things up and read into things.
@Mr. NoName yeah true. Metroid prime series is one of the best thing happened in gaming industry. And this point of view of mine is bias in many sanse. But i want to give reason behind my words. The reason why i called super Metroid better is in its overall structure. If you know about problems of prime series. You would know about that one of the biggest problem of prime series is its boring backtracking where it force you to backtrack in this big labyrinthine world. Super Metroid also had big world but it first teaches you how to find secrets in the world by cutting your path. Then after you get every item in 'tutorial' section. It completely removes it's restrictions and let you find your path of way forward with your own pace and abilities. Backtracking is not boring because you are not travelling same room just for one upgrade but you actually don't know your objectives and try to progress in game along with finding many secrets in previous area's dead ends. It doesn't have teleport and it doesn't need teleport because it's backtracking is so natural and fluid. It also give you tools. So you don't have to follow same path in your second playthrough by breaking games in new ways. It doesn't mean prime series has bad world design. The thing is i find backtracking in first prime game. Many people don't find it boring. Prime also try to address this challenge by introducing different part of separated world in prime 2. That's why prime 2 is even better game than prime 1 in my opinion.
I think Metroid Prime 1 is fantastic, but let's be real, the series started to get really old by the time Metroid Prime 3 came out, didn't it? So trying something new is ABSOLUTELY perfect for where we are at right now.
@Mr. NoName yeah backtracking is not bad thing. instead it force you to truly understand the world and explore every nook and cranny of world to find secrets and upgrades but it should be rewarding and genuine like super metroid. You didn't has to go same room again and again for one thing but you always get rewarded for backtracking with entire new rooms and puzzles in every room where you backtrack to progress further. It doesn't mean super metroid didn't have boring bits of backtracking. it does have this boring bit of backtracking especially the path to reach norfair. Their is only one path to reach norfair. That's force you backtrack same room again and again. You also had to cross same norfair again to reach deeper parts of lower norfair which actually not bad backtracking because it has many shortcuts for us to reach it but still entering norfair is always tedious. Travelling norfair is pretty fun when you had many upgrades but entering is not. It should also has shortcuts for entrance or even different entrance for norfair from different places other than only red soil brinstar like crateria or maridia.
Speaking of "not giving everything away" story wise, Samus has always had that mystery surrounding her. That said, this mystery is decades old now and maybe its time we got some new lore to inch things along.
I drew my own map for Metroid to NES. The whole world I hade handmade on this square paper I used for my math classes. Every item was marked down. I was so proud of myself back then. :)
I think Rob would love samus returns on 3DS! When you complete the game 100% there are “chozo memories” artwork you can unlock that tease the role chozo will play in the new game! Really cool stuff imo :)
I'll be honest, I wish you guys talked about Metroid Fusion more. I get that Super Metroid is the fan-favorite but to gloss over Fusion is really a disservice for an incredible game.
It's possible that John didn't play it? They tend to talk about the games they connected with the most, obviously. Personally, I didn't play it much either, sadly.
I was a little frustrated the first time I played it when I figured out that they "nerfed" bomb jumping :\ But then I accepted that it wasn't "that type" of Metroid game and enjoyed the ride! I do appreciate how they tackled the horror aspect in Fusion and hope they keep that train rolling in Dread :o
I've never played a Metroid game before. I've randomly watched the Trailer 2 and Gameplay Trailer yesterday, and it had STRONG Gamecube vibes. I can't explain it. The editing was just so well done, and even thought it was just in-game graphic, it was very scenario/movie-like. And the surroundings are exactly my cup of tea!
Dread has been in planning for almost as long as Fusion was released. Seeing it revived, it definitely is the sequel we have been waiting for 20 years later. It looks incredible, every trailer shows off its energy, vibe, and focus of exploration, atmosphere, visuals and music. Will be worth the wait
@b p no. Just because a game doesn’t come out for decades doesn’t mean they have been working on it for decades. It probably had 24 months of development like anything else.
You're missing out. Metroid Prime 1 was a 9.5/ 10 game a must play. the gba games also are amazing, the older ones are hard to get into but, I was from that era.
@@JazGalaxy Maybe he meant the core concept has been developed back then and hasn't been much changed since then. Cause I didn't know that, and even I can tell just by watching the trailers that it has some Gamecube-vibes. Not sure if I understood the comment correctly, though.
@@oasisbeyond Since I still have a Wii, I'll try to find Prime somewhere. Thank you. Maybe I'm very biased, but imo the best games are from the late 90s and early 2000s. There’s a lot of excellent Metroidvanias. Ori comes to mind. But nothing, and I mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, comes close to Metroid itself. Not even Castlevania can touch Metroid. It’s like Momster Hunter. No matter how many clones release, they just don’t scratch that same itch.
I'm getting the game, and looking forward to it. But hype is certainly the wrong way to go about it. You have to keep expectations realistic and tempered
I've been playing through a good amount of the other games in the series in preparation for Dread; Zero Mission, Samus Returns, Super Metroid, and soon will be playing Fusion. I still have yet to play the Prime trilogy, but I have the Wii version sitting on my shelf. Probably won't play it until after I finish Dread, and I still want to try Other M at some point.
god damn you got me there, when you said that metroid memories video was from nine years ago. That was the first ever video I watched on this channel.... Time does fly huhh
This is interesting how things that were back then common are now weight with gold, I keep reminding myself to buy everything twice, to keep the second one sealed, just to maybe show it off to everyone 50 years later.
I grew up with the NES/Famiclones in South Africa and have never played a Metroid game until fairly recently. Decided to beat the first four in recent weeks before Dread launches, which I just did last week!
Growing up not having an Super Nintendo everytime I came across one was like a mythical experience. Those memories are relatively few but they are indelible to my love of video games. No game was more striking to my curious young mind than Super Metroid which my much older cousin owned and played in his garage. I remember being transfixed purely by the opening scene of the game. To this day Metroid remains one of my favourite video game series of all time. And while Nintendo has been an unfaithful license holders over the years with many misfires since the release of the great prime trilogy. It's good seeing how much love and respect fans like DrM64 have given the property by recreating Metroid 2 in beautiful 16bit art style. I don't own a switch but I'm happy that Samus and the Metroid are finally getting some much deserved attention this time around and look forward to many more Metroid games to come. Hopefully Nintendo will decide to make another 16bit style game as well.
"Hello! I'm the marshmallow man!" spit a mouthful of chili EVERYWHERE. Jesus dude lol Great video Johnny! Very good to see Robman back to normal again as well. Thanks so much for posting!
That's a great idea! Johnny, you should totally do that. It's prob be meaningful for people who enjoy your channel to have art from you, a kinda cool idea and a good way to pivot into making a living as an artist, as you wanted to originally (if I'm not mistaken).
So excited for Dread! Been hearing the rumors about it for over a decade and never expected it to end up happening. Always enjoyed the 2D Metroid titles.
Metroid Zero Mission was my introduction to the series and the genre; an amazing game. I wish Nintendo would still do pixel art. I'm not excited for Dread, but it'll certainly be good to have in circulation and play one day!
@NoctLightCloud It's been a while since Nintendo has made a new 2D Metroid and there's been plenty of activity in the metroidvania design space since then, so they'll need to prove they still have what it takes to be top dog. Other personal reasons not worth dissecting, like really enjoying the games I'm playing right now (and other hobbies) and just don't have the emotional or time availability to be excited for something new atm.
I'm not a massive fan of metroid, furthest I got was on metroid fusion against Ridley and could t defeat him so eventually just gave up on it lol! Intrigued about this though and you guys always get me more excited about games haha!
It’s going to be my first one but I’m really exited for all the longtime fans too. I think it’s the perfect time for it as well no huge competition overshadowing it.

Same thoughts around why wouldn’t Nintendo work with fan talent to bring their projects to full realization!
This was a GREAT exciting video guys. Yall got me even MORE hype for Metroid!
god damn you got me there, when you said that metroid memories video was from nine years ago. That was the first ever video I watched on this channel.... Time does fly huhh
Fantastic drawing of Samus Jonny well done.
Robb man ☠️🔥
This is interesting how things that were back then common are now weight with gold, I keep reminding myself to buy everything twice, to keep the second one sealed, just to maybe show it off to everyone 50 years later.
There's abit in the 3ds remake of metroid II, that mentions that Chozo. The one in the Dread trailer. I'm digging your art, Johnny. Cool stuff
Much more excited about this one than any Prime games. The 2D metroid games are so much more fun!
I agree, Metroid Prime feels like 3-D Zelda on space and I don't like it.
I’ve been waiting for this video 🙌
Man....after watching this video it really makes me want to revisit all the old metroid games!
yup .can t wait for this .
I grew up with the NES/Famiclones in South Africa and have never played a Metroid game until fairly recently. Decided to beat the first four in recent weeks before Dread launches, which I just did last week!
Ill wait for reviews but its definitely on my radar
This is the first video I have watched from this channel and it is so funny and entertaining Good Job!!
I love it with Rob man being back! Great vid!!
Thanks for video John and Rob really looking forward to metroid and all the very best to you guys
I’m looking forward to this game more than any other game at this time. Looks amazing.
I haven't played a Metroid game yet but I'm playing Castlevania SOTN and I'm a big fan
Hell yeah. Rob man again 👍👍
Awesome video as always, great to see both of you ;)
"Hello! I'm the marshmallow man!" spit a mouthful of chili EVERYWHERE. Jesus dude lol
Great video Johnny! Very good to see Robman back to normal again as well. Thanks so much for posting!
Loved this video one of my favorites so far I mean I love alot of your videos but this is one of my absolute favorite
Love seeing your art buddy keep it coming!
The video i didnt knew i needed, thank you bro
So much hype!! I've had my copy reserved since the trailer announcement. Can't wait!!
Metroid Dread is easily my favourite Metroid game, alongside Fusion. I couldn't believe we were finally getting Dread when they announced it.
I'd pay to commission some art from you dude. Those pictures were sick!
That's a great idea! Johnny, you should totally do that. It's prob be meaningful for people who enjoy your channel to have art from you, a kinda cool idea and a good way to pivot into making a living as an artist, as you wanted to originally (if I'm not mistaken).
Dude I'm so un artistic myself that I too won't even bother with something as simple as stick figures
So excited for Dread! Been hearing the rumors about it for over a decade and never expected it to end up happening. Always enjoyed the 2D Metroid titles.
I first I thought you disliked the game when I watched your reaction. I am glad you are hyped for the game.
im so hyped too! got mine preordered I can't wait!
Working my way through the metroid series in preperation for Dread, can't wait till october!
Metroid Zero Mission was my introduction to the series and the genre; an amazing game. I wish Nintendo would still do pixel art. I'm not excited for Dread, but it'll certainly be good to have in circulation and play one day!
Zero Mission was my first as well! So good!
why are you not excited?
Zero was excellent. I liked it more then super metroid and its my favorite besides the first metroid prime.
@@benfoster6715 Fair point! Can you name some good metroidvania games?
I'm not a massive fan of metroid, furthest I got was on metroid fusion against Ridley and could t defeat him so eventually just gave up on it lol! Intrigued about this though and you guys always get me more excited about games haha!
Idk how I missed this episode but glad I came across it. That art was amazing
It’s going to be my first one but I’m really exited for all the longtime fans too. I think it’s the perfect time for it as well no huge competition overshadowing it.
I can't wait for this game. Every trailer drop game continues to look better and better. 👍🏾
I had a ninetendo power magazine and played Gameboy version on Gameboy advanced
