    I love this knife; it has to be close to the perfect bushcrafting knife. The Mora Garberg is good, but the Benchmade Puukko overall just seems superior, especially if you factor in Benchmade's warranty.
    But I wonder why more persons don't baton like this:
    (1) Make a wedge out of a piece of wood; set it aside
    (2) Hammer (baton) your knife into the top of the log you want to split until a crack forms;
    (3) Now replace the knife with a wooden wedge, and hammer the wedge into the log until the log splits in half. You may need to use multiple wedges.
    I've seen videos of Mors Kochanski and Felix Immler doing it this way. It makes a lot of sense: there's less abuse to the knife, and it may (I'm not sure) split lumber more effectively than the usual way.

    The problem with a loose fit in the sheath can be easily fixed. Add a layer or two of high quality tape to the inside sides of the plastic sheath liner. I used self adhesive bike tire patches, but seems like gorilla duct tape, or T-tex duct tape would also be ideal.

    Solid review, mate. Definitely the best one out right now on this knife.
    This knife is actually what I would call my first "impulse buy". I like knives a lot, but I do a lot of research and stuff before I buy one to make sure I know what I'm getting. But when I first saw this knife, I knew I needed it. So I bought it once it was back in stock. And I'm super glad I did. It's definitely a favorite of mine now.
    Just a comment on the "scandi grind":
    The grind on the knife, to me, doesn't seem to be a scandi grind at all. But a high saber grind. That bevel just seems too big. And I actually prefer that because I find that I like saber and full flat grinds more for a general purpose knife. They don't slice as well, sure, but the difference is hardly noticeable, and the edge is more durable. I also just simply like cutting with those grinds more; Easier for me to control.

    • @RevHiker
      @RevHiker  5 лет назад +2

      Thank you! And I agree about the grind. I know I saw people saying they wouldnt buy it because it wasnt a scandi, and when you see that, you know it's just people caught up in the hype... Scandinavian knives are great, but lots of other knives work just as well for different things.

    Yeah! Not a lot of reviews yet. I impulsively purchased this. Because of the price and the steel. It is now one of my favorites. It will accompany me in almost all outdoor activities. The ranger green bugout is the perfect companion.

    Some people have talked about the puuko having a softer heat treat resulting in less edge retention. I’d be interested in hearing your long term opinion. Thanks for the word of encouragement too. 😃

      It's only hardened to 55hrc, should be around 60. I hear future models will be harder for even better edge retention.

      I like Scandi grinds for wood craft but I am one of the few people that hate sharpening Scandi grinds. So I would more likely use this over traditional puukkos.

    Great video @RevHiker! By any chance you have used the Lionstell M4 (M390 steel and made in Italy). I know it's a different steel and price point but they are so similar in size and usage. Any insights you could possibly share comparing these two amazing blades?

    Any knife that is sharpened by hand will have more of a convex edge than a true V ground edge ( just a function of the lack of constant angle of the knife to stone that comes from using human hands).
    I like 3V. It is tougher at approx 59 RC than it is at higher RC.
    So better edge retention (at higher RC) comes at the cost of less toughness.

    Good job and good points at the end: can you review the Benchmade Grizzly Ridge and compare it to other hunting knives? I know Benchmade has a lot of options in their hunt series and you seem to have several other options to compare it to

    • @RevHiker
      @RevHiker  5 лет назад +1

      I have a fallkniven s1, and it's a nice knife, but the 3v on this knife is MUCH better than the vg10 laminate used by fallkniven. And the plastic sheath is loud and rattles... not a fan of it at all. Like I said, like my s1, but I would take this every time for the steel alone.

    The brand of "flour" says little about the quality of the "cake."
    Most puukot are made with a secondary bevel, as are most Scandinavian knives (Sweden, Norway, Denmark). The "Scandi Grind" is a British invention, preached by the now-closed BritishBlades.com.

    Sheath is garbage so effectively, NO it is NOT a $123 knife. Quality sheath is $40 minimum. $160-170 knife....lots of other options. This package is a total fail. Sheath is no retention, uses garbage leather, poor stitching, poor riveting, and a plastic insert so you can't even properly wet mold it. So is it REALLY $123 dollars?
