Field Testing the Puukko by Benchmade

- Did some field testing on a rainy Northwest Day with the 200 Puukko by Benchmade. Should have brought fire starter material!
We chopped through some Oak and started a fire with some moist moss and dry leaves.
My first round of field testing with more to follow!
Any suggestions or things you want to see tested, just let me know.
Thanks for watching!

I wish the guy the best. Everyone is entitled to learn.
Everyone has to start somewhere, so don’t let the critics get you down. Remember, unless they’re putting up their own videos, they have no grounds to judge. At least you’re DOING it.
Appreciate you Tracy! It’s true I had to learn and chose to record it! Thank you for your support!
Got plenty of reason to judge based on the hundreds of successful fire starting videos out there
Anybody can watch a RUclips video and think they got It down ..
But what you did. Is invaluable.. personal experience is key to success.. seeing and doing are two different things.. keep up the good work.. nothing replaces experience.
Even the experts had to learn, too. Nice review. Thank you for sharing this. Nice knife.
Looks like a nice work horse! Fun to watch you put it to use!
Yeah it was fun! Looking forward to doing some more work with it soon. Thanks!
What you'll want to do with that Ferro is push the tip onto your choice of tinder. It helps focus those sparks into a smaller group and they burn right in the tinder instead of in the air. Hope this helps
Much appreciated Jace! Learning so much in the last year. Cheers!
Not to mention the guy is trying to ferro 3 big sticks with no tinder lmao
That works a lot better with a bigger ferro rod!!!
Practice creates perfection
My Puukko doesn’t have a sharp enough spine for a farro rod, it has to be modified.
The edge on Benchmade bushcrafting knives are ridiculous.
The knives are nice and will work fine AFTER you reprofile the grinds.
A puukko with a folder knife V grind is just a saber grind blade. They should have a scandi-vex Style a micro vex edge for strength but thin edge for wood carving.
Unfortunately like my Benchmade Bushcrafter 162 it's a lot of work and to reprofile a blade esp a $220 new knife is nerve-wracking.
I was able to fix my Bushcrafter it's an awesome knife now BUT Benchmade has got to change their grinds on these bush knives.
Reprofiling S30V and 3V is not a normal task for the average user it's a no go....They are stuck with a "bushcraft" in name only knife.
I have always liked the puuko knife style. This version looks nice. I do want one!
Yeah once I got hands on with it I knew it was a good one to have!
too bad that the ferro rod was a lousy one. There are better out there, and its always worth it to have something reliable. The knife will throw a better spark with a better rod.
I like it cause it reminds me of how inexperienced I am at bushcraft a good way to clean it up is to use flitz polish
Don’t people believe when benchmade says it’s full tang?
I remember my first time outdoors. I think this may be the first time this guy left the house. And he never had to start a fire . I remember my first fire. Lol.
Looks good man.I like the sound of it striking the Ferro rod in slow mo. That was pretty cool.
Thank you! It was a fun day in the rain and the knife did great!
If you want to do better curls and feathers then you need to do a couple strong clearing cuts so that you establish a small corner that is smoothly plained that will take a feather much better than the rough exterior of the wood that you're trying to feather
Go on Ebay and buy the 6" by 1/2" firesteel, for $12. Throws a storm of sparks compared to an exotac. But that is a sweet knife.
Agreed! Had to order one already. Realized when we started shooting bigger is better!! Thanks for watching and the feedback!
I bought 2 rods1/2" by 5" for 14.98
Except I bought 3 pairs lol
I manage fine with keychain sized 1” ferro rods. The problem in this video is that the spine of the knife isn’t sharp enough - nothing wrong with the rod he used.
I convexed my Benchmade 200 puuko, well Paul Inman actually did it for me!!!
the first 10 seconds he used a smaller branch batoning a larger ones gave me the cringe
If one steel truly deserves the name supersteel it's 3V imho
Why were you using trying to use moss as tinder? Moss is like the anti-tinder.
being way too silly in the Oregon rain! Yes it was anti-tinder indeed!
@@zachstuff find some fatwood or be a proper and buy it in a large box at any Walmart, but make sure you open the box before you buy it to make sure it has a lot of pitch cause it's not a uniform product. It's duraflame brand fatwood sold inside Walmart for like 7 bucks!!!
Technique with the ferro rod is killing you. Under poor weather conditions (wet, cold, windy) you will be in serious trouble. I make it part of my practice to go out in those poor conditions and get a fire starter with nothing more than a knife and ferro. It is much harder than one would ever imagine. Having a ferro rod does not guarantee a fire....far from it in fact
Yeah I was trying a method which wasn’t working in the rain. But have since practiced and found some new techniques. It is a good thing to practice. Thanks for watching and the feedback!
Ferro rod too far away from tinder
It damn near is a guarantee. The problem I always see when I’m out with new guys in the woods is the lack of discipline to make a bird’s nest that will take one strike.
90% of the time it’s the preparation and surface area of the tinder, not the tools or conditions.
@@ernststavroblofeld2109 bingo!!! Prepare for success!!! Lack of preparation is a plan to fail!!!
Get a bigger rod. I bought 2 rods that are 1/2"x5" for 14.98 on Amazon. Suckers throw 3 times the volume of Sparks as this one and the individual Sparks are globs that sit and sizzle and really get the heat into your tinder!!! It will seriously raise your success rate. I do practice primitive methods, but I bought 6 of these rods to last me a long damn time!!! So I start my first fire with this and chart material or natural chart and then I use my Flint and steel. With technique and hard rocks and next fire mentality my steel striker will last year's if not longer than my life!!!
I'm curious to see how it looks under the handle.
Yes that would be very interesting. Let me see what I can do on that over the next couple weeks. Maybe I just have to destroy one....that would hurt.
It is full tang, this hole is tang and almost to the end of handle, it is covered in rubber
Great review
Groovy! Thank you!
You do have good taste in user knives!!!
Thank you Jesse!
I heard that the spine isn't that sharp right out of the box
Pop Kids Family it has a slight curve on the back edge but is still able to throw some sparks!
@@zachstuff cool bro thank you for the feedback, think I'm gonna pull the trigger on one after watching your reviews
This is one of my few fixed blades and after doing some hammering with it and how sharp it is I am very impressed. You will enjoy it!
Doesn’t do ferro rod very well because the rounded the spine edge. They also put a secondary bevel on a scandi ground blade?
Yeah found that out quick! Was able to get some action out of it. Thanks for watching!
James Campbell it’s because the average buyer probably doesn’t know that a scandi grind is fragile and rolls easily. They don’t want someone to roll the edge hitting a knot while batoning and think it’s the knifes fault.
Does the Puukko float?
Haha, nope!! Tried that in my other Puukko video.
Solid blade, nice review.
Holding up good! Thanks for watching!!
I hope you know that what you did is invaluable...
I think you'd have better luck holding the knife next to your tinder bundle and drawing the ferro rod away. That way you're not risking smacking into your bundle with the knife... :)
Good call! I have learned many tips and tricks since posting this video. I appreciate the feedback and support!
does this knife rust under the rubber handle? i have held off buying it because im afraid it will rust the same and my cs mini ult hunter did. water seeps under at the start of the rubber handle and sits in there causing rust. does anyone know if they clear coated the tang?
Great question! Let me check in on that and I will let you know. The handle is very tightly sealed as seen in my video where I cut the handles off. But double checking is good!
@@zachstuff - please do! many people have this same question and i have personally just seen 3 stating this in comment sections
Howdy! As follow up they did not coat the tang. Only polished so it will have a bit of protection. They did test using the salt fog system and it held up great!
I can't tell if the spine isn't that sharp or you're just that bad at striking the rod, leaning towards the second option
No, the spine on this knife is pretty dull.
Ha great video man a work knife indeed 👌🏽
Thanks Carols for checking this video out! Hard use ready!
This is like the Les Straud VS Mora video...
Ahh very nice reference!!
I hate small ferro rods!!! I get them 5 inch by 1/2 inch at the smallest!!!
I use 1” long ferro rods, and they work just fine. The problem is the dull spine on the knife, not the rod he’s using.
There’s a bunch of haters here
Can’t a kitchen knife go through wood; why is batoning always used as examples for testing knives 🔪,
Batoning, although never really suggested with any knife, as its an axe oriented job. will test the sheer toughness and durability of the steel
I guess you right,
Drvinnieboombatts Batonning wood is great for splitting purposes. Obviously an axe or hatchet is better most of the time, and when batonning, a robust knife is required (a kitchen knife is thin for slicing purposes and is not safe for batonning). Nonetheless batonning is safer for people who are not skilled with an axe or hatchet. Also, many people will not carry the extra weight of a hatchet or axe when hiking.
David K got it, I’m just looking for extremes such as opening cans, prying with it, something that will really test whether a knife will pass or fail,; with so many different steels and heat treating methods; but obviously someone would have to be willing to destroy their expensive knife 🔪 of course
Drvinnieboombatts because cinderblocks tear the knife up and don’t catch a spark very good. Lol. All in fun
$ 200.00? F-1 is better in every respect and it cost less. I have both and was really disappointed with the Benchmade.
Sorry to hear about your experience with the Benchmade Puukko. Appreciate your feedback!
$200 where? This thing is $145 from Benchmade direct, whoever has this listed at $200 needs stabbed in the kidneys
Yeah BM has some in stock and Blade HQ just restocked at $123.50.....Good stuff!
@@zachstuff same with knives plus 123.99
Robert De Palma Yeah I paid $119.99. And the only people shitting on it are mainly fanboys of traditional Puukko companies. They did an amazing job for price, materials and ergonomics. People should use it before saying how shitty and inferior it is. I’ve used a lot of knives. This blade will put in the work. Whether or not the human using it can hold up their end is another thing.
They sell books for that...
Very UNIMPRESSIVE too short for wood processing not at all good throwing sparks but that could have been the fero rods fault. This is probably better suited to field dressing game like squirrel, rabbit, deer. And maybe meal prep.
Get a match
Bic
I should have quit watching immediately when I saw your poorly done tinder pile and lack of skills using a ferro rod but I was so intrigued i had to see how it played out 🤣
Get a man size ferro rod. :)
Have already upgraded! I had quite the baby ferro I was using!!
If you think that's what the knife is capable of you need some bushcrafting lessons yourself.
Learning every day! Thanks Joe!
Why is someone who clearly does not know how to use a knife or a fire steel making reviews about "fieldtesting"?
Always fun to learn!
He has no idea what he is doing but he's trying to look like he does. He needs some bushcrafting lessons. It's a great knife just not the best of users trying to demonstrate it. My ribs hurt from watching him try.
Thanks for the feedback Joe!
That is a horrible horrible representation from you of the Benchmade puukko... Please take the video down.
