  • Did some field testing on a rainy Northwest Day with the 200 Puukko by Benchmade. Should have brought fire starter material!
We chopped through some Oak and started a fire with some moist moss and dry leaves.
My first round of field testing with more to follow!
Any suggestions or things you want to see tested, just let me know.
    Thanks for watching!

What you'll want to do with that Ferro is push the tip onto your choice of tinder. It helps focus those sparks into a smaller group and they burn right in the tinder instead of in the air. Hope this helps

The edge on Benchmade bushcrafting knives are ridiculous.
The knives are nice and will work fine AFTER you reprofile the grinds.
A puukko with a folder knife V grind is just a saber grind blade. They should have a scandi-vex Style a micro vex edge for strength but thin edge for wood carving.
Unfortunately like my Benchmade Bushcrafter 162 it's a lot of work and to reprofile a blade esp a $220 new knife is nerve-wracking.
I was able to fix my Bushcrafter it's an awesome knife now BUT Benchmade has got to change their grinds on these bush knives.
Reprofiling S30V and 3V is not a normal task for the average user it's a no go....They are stuck with a "bushcraft" in name only knife.

If you want to do better curls and feathers then you need to do a couple strong clearing cuts so that you establish a small corner that is smoothly plained that will take a feather much better than the rough exterior of the wood that you're trying to feather

Technique with the ferro rod is killing you. Under poor weather conditions (wet, cold, windy) you will be in serious trouble. I make it part of my practice to go out in those poor conditions and get a fire starter with nothing more than a knife and ferro. It is much harder than one would ever imagine. Having a ferro rod does not guarantee a fire....far from it in fact

    • @zachstuff

It damn near is a guarantee. The problem I always see when I’m out with new guys in the woods is the lack of discipline to make a bird’s nest that will take one strike.
90% of the time it’s the preparation and surface area of the tinder, not the tools or conditions.

Get a bigger rod. I bought 2 rods that are 1/2"x5" for 14.98 on Amazon. Suckers throw 3 times the volume of Sparks as this one and the individual Sparks are globs that sit and sizzle and really get the heat into your tinder!!! It will seriously raise your success rate. I do practice primitive methods, but I bought 6 of these rods to last me a long damn time!!! So I start my first fire with this and chart material or natural chart and then I use my Flint and steel. With technique and hard rocks and next fire mentality my steel striker will last year's if not longer than my life!!!

James Campbell it’s because the average buyer probably doesn’t know that a scandi grind is fragile and rolls easily. They don’t want someone to roll the edge hitting a knot while batoning and think it’s the knifes fault.

Drvinnieboombatts Batonning wood is great for splitting purposes. Obviously an axe or hatchet is better most of the time, and when batonning, a robust knife is required (a kitchen knife is thin for slicing purposes and is not safe for batonning). Nonetheless batonning is safer for people who are not skilled with an axe or hatchet. Also, many people will not carry the extra weight of a hatchet or axe when hiking.
