Cupertino, California - Apple today announced that Sir Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer, will depart the company as an employee later this year to form an independent design company which will count Apple among its primary clients. While he pursues personal projects, Ive in his new company will continue to work closely and on a range of projects with Apple.
Wow, I mean. On one hand, I’m devastated. As someone who started out in the business as a designer, Jony Ive and his relationship with Apple was just everything I looked up to and aspired to be.
On the other hand, though, as someone no longer in design, Jony Ive set free but still connected to Apple is something I really, deeply feel.
But, sorry, first. I wasn’t going to do this video today. I was going to wait and think on it a bit, and do a deeper, more forward looking video tomorrow. But then, you guessed it, the Internet happened.
Hot takes began raining down like meteors in a Michael Bay movie. And, as expected a lot of them were just terrible. Like terrible set in comic sans terrible.
That's why I ultimately decided to split my video in two. To get something short out today and the focus on something deeper for tomorrow.
    So, here goes part 1

No one is going to say that. Apple's design died with Steve. Jony's voice at Apple lost it's weight with Steve gone and everything went to shit from there. Apple went from a company shipping revolutionary products to a corporation shipping just good enough stuff to make money with.

Usually love your clips Rene, but this one should’ve been rated R, since it’s basically an obscene 11 min BJ. „Greatest designer of all times“, eh? WTF. Seriously? Might wanna leave that one to the guys who designed the pyramids or something. Sir Ive’s basically been dozing off in the shack behind the UFO the last 10+ years and couldn’t even be bothered to crawl out for a show most of the time. He may have gotten a few things right in the past-wether by inspiration or accident-but I can literally imagine him moonily floating about in his studio, getting a prototype from a design genius in his team, switching some stupid thing out of position for reasons and leaving with a scary giggle for another hit in the shack. All the while having Tim shovel $$$ up his backside 24/7. So please holler if something serious happens, like one of Apple’s designers that carefully let design follow function hitting the road. Oh, wait…

Feels like this whole announcement is an exercise in damage limitation, I imagine Ive gradually lost influence once Jobs passed on as Apple transitioned from a product oriented company to a profit orientated one. To continue making ground breaking designs ‘Product centric Staff’ need to be at the top of the company calling the shots, rare in any organisation, however Apple under Jobs is the most famous example of how game changing this can be.
Personally I’d also argue that high standards in QC and quality of the ‘user journey’ also play a huge part, something Jobs was passionate about too.

The iMac blew us away with its innovation and beauty. The iPod was a departure from MP3 players of the time. For the iPhone it may have been more form follows function but who decided to do away with physical keyboard? It created an industry. The MacBooks also led the way out of netbooks. Strangely I was feeling that something was lacking recently. I don't know what but I felt it. So It is time for change. There are other creative people out there. And anyway Ive will still be there. Maybe he needs the freedom to pursue other goals. We might even see more Apple revolutionary designs come out of LoveFrom.
Then look at the new Galaxy phones. They are beautiful. Someone designed them and it was not Ive. Let's see the creativity that others bring also. We might be surprised.

  • @fraydog
    @fraydog 5 лет назад +5

John Gruber explained this perfectly. Ive is gone. Apple is a company where either you are at the wheel, or not.
The worrying thing is that Hankey and Dye are not answering to Cook. They are answering to Jeff Williams, an operations guy. For Apple to continue to be Apple, they need have design people at CDO level working directly with the board and CEO on design. That people don’t see this as Apple’s moat is concerning to say the least. Having a chief design officer is a critical position in my opinion, given how unbelievably critical design is to Apple.
I can accept that Ive can still have some say with Apple. The key issue is that Hankey will have the final say on Apple products. That’s the key point. Ive may just want to branch out. The long term issue is design is the most important key of Apple’s success, and Apple has to adapt to a changing technology landscape. I think not having a C-level voice is problematic.

I think it's becoming clear that apple since then has become more like the others. Not ridiculously so yet but you can tell it's not the same. Adding buttons, splitting the iMac Pro into a desktop machine and monitor to make the difference. Bulkier designs. It's better for the consumer I think but lacks the same taste artistically.

If anyone is at “fault” for that keyboard, it’s hardware engineering.

First, Rene is right. Everyone leaves at some point. The Apple Board of Directors is supposed to have succession plans for not only Tim Cook, but every C-level, SVP and what is deemed "critical talent". So I'm sure that there have been plans for a post-Ive future that have been kicked around and periodically updated for years. As for Ive, this sounds like he's been itching to design some things that Apple is never going to do. There are all kinds of products, concepts, architecture, logos....anything you can think of that he could do if he were out on his own. But he owes everything to Apple for essentially making him one of the greatest designers (if not the greatest) of the last half century.
So what do you do if you are Apple and Ive? Ive could just make a clean break and leave, but I think he does genuinely have an affection for a company that has given him so much (not to mention made him famous and incredibly wealthy). He could do what Steve Jobs did for years....work for Apple and run another company on the side. But that has challenges of its own and Apple has talent waiting in the wings that has been patiently waiting for their mentor to retire. The third option is what they seem to be taking....that Ive will be allowed to leave, Apple will still use his new company going forward, and more latitude will be given to the leadership left behind.
The details will be interesting to how all of this will play out. Ive is one of those people at Apple who had access and knowledge about virtually everything the company is doing. So there has to be a lot of trust that Ive will not solicit business from Apple's competitors for a very long time. This includes other phone companies, computer companies, car companies and many other businesses obvious and not. I'm sure Apple's lawyers will have fun drawing up what all that means. But nothing lasts forever and Apple has shown that they can be great without Steve Jobs. At least Ive will be around in some way shape or form for years to come as a consultant.

One of the truths that struck a true tone is that Apple is changing. It is more focussed on services and less focussed on product. That has to factor in to this discussion. The culture of Apple is changing and the core competencies are changing and the skills are changing. The needs for product, physical product to be designed are changing as well. It's not yet clear where this ends up. But what is clear is that a Star like JOhnny Ives see it and he knows that he has more to offer the world then he can manifest at Apple exclusively.. Services aren't designed in the same ay that products are.

Steve once said that he was his soul mate design wise. Him departing means only one thing, he’s bored and that Apple is not letting his ideas flow like Steve did.

You know what a designer needs? Freedom and Recognition. It shows how hollow Apple is becoming.

Top channel for everything Apple. So thoughtful, insanely fast, etc. In the end though, I have a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach that things are slowly slipping away at Apple. Just way too many bad decisions piling up over the last 5 years (hundreds of them) is indicating a slide downhill, not up. I think we've all been holding out hoping that this is due to a secret project (maybe an automobile) that they are putting most of their resources in, but as the years go by it's starting to not look that way...
Trying to be optimistic, but this news really is a gut punch.
Perhaps our current golden age of tech is fizzling out and the next one (virtual reality) is too far off in the distant future to have any meaningful impact in the near future. :-(

I am hoping that this change will lead to Apple giving up on the thinness craze and the design over everything else and moving to a greater balance between design and functionality instead.

Agreed - well said and thank you. For me, Jony's greatest gift to us is that he has brought our attention to the beauty of DETAIL. Perhaps even better, he has made the technology itself almost invisible - connecting the human being directly with the experience technology can bring us. (Might not have put that very well?). Remember how you felt when you played with an iphone for the very first time?

Finally! I felt like he was responsible for changing the plans of the engineers, often for worse (but better looking) concepts. This may set the focus a little differently, especially since jony‘s not really gone.

I think he left apple because his creative hands were tied by the board of executives after Steve stepped down as CEO

    • @winninglifeyo

No way he was chosen over Scott forstall to lead the redesign of iOS and Mac OS and promoted. He was itching to do other things and bought in Newsom for a kindred spirit. He then focused on Apple Stores and Apple Park. He went horizontally and then decided to go vertically in design with the company and is now spreading his wings because he feels he got them retail, HQ, OS, Hardware wise on a trajectory he spent building since iOS7. Apple Park was Steve’s last baby and I think that’s why it was important for him to move that direction too before leaving Apple if not for that and getting Newsome he would have left around 2016/17 when the rumors surfaced he was ready for a change.
