    Lord of the Rings: Rise to War, or just War, is an exploitative mobile gacha game wearing the veneer of the epic fantasy adventure in order to trick naïve players into spending vast amounts of money on it.
    Nothing about my 8 hour playthrough was redeeming or enjoyable.
    Thank you to the Patreon supporters and Twitch subs for making my suffering worth it.

      It's called coping. Humans have a hard time accepting something that goes against their strong beliefs. If you grew up religious for example, making you an atheist is near if not completely impossible. Doesn't matter how much evidence is presented or who is right, because the biological structure of our brains genuinely denies anything that goes against our long-held beliefs. This is present in many examples, and Starfield is a great representation of that. It's not even a real game, more of a fishbowl simulator with cutscenes trying to hide the 500 loading screens, yet it's 70 dollars or more if you got it early, and the vast majority of the audience is having massive cope at the fact they got swindled and played more than 2 hours because they kept being told "it gets better after 10 hours" and now they can't refund it because they played it too much and now they're stuck. Welp, best thing my brain can think of now is coping about my massive financial error.

Candy Crush made 1.293 billion the same year, 2015, and is still generating 1.190 billion even in 2020, for comparison Clash as a whole, including clash royal, made only 483 million. Now let's move onto a more apt comparison, "Game of War- Fire Age" panned as one of the most vapid lifeless, soulless and greedy mobile games released in 2014 made 963 million USD in 2020 for the year.

    Unfortunately this isn't just one game, this is 100s, 100s of reskinned low effort garbage with different themes, kingdom builders, dragon kingdom builders, viking's, pirates, fantasy settings, old english settings, eastern settings, cave men, pet tamers, tribesmen, vampires, zombie invasions, other ips like warhammer/star trek ofc, hell you name it; from multiple developers. Whatever garbage they can use as an excuse to drag in a few more whales with the lowest effort content imaginable, ever since around the time of Travian these games have just been multiplying over and over again. Anecdotally so take it with plenty of salt but from my experience they seem to attract a surprisingly large amount of boomers with little time/knowledge to game properly and well paying jobs, ripe for these companies to manipulate. Recently though they seem to have gotten a lot worse as people continue to turn a blind eye to what's going on in the mobile game industry and more and more companies try to cash in on the dodgy business practices.

The most effective way to gouge consumers for money is to make them pay to skip the wait or eliminate tedium. This is exactly why all major publishers started including some sort of boosts or skips in their single player games, under the guise of "player choice". This game in reality - You’re a tourist visiting a new city and you’re looking for something fun to do. You’re walking on the sidewalk and a man walks up to you and asks if you’re looking for something fun to do. You say “yes how’d you know”? He answers “your recent search history told me”. “Follow me” he says. And you do what he says immediately and follow him.
    You walk to a park and he picks up a very large black lawn bag filled with rotting garbage. He dumps all the trash on the ground and tells you “now I want you to pick all the garbage up and put it back into the bag”. You agree immediately. Before you start picking up the rotting garbage of half eaten moldy hot dogs and crap filled baby diapers he tells you “now you can pick all that garbage up with your hands or I can sell this small plastic children’s shovel to you for $30 and you can use that instead” you agree immediately and pay him $30 cash.
    After you spend 10 minutes shoveling the garbage back into the bag(would have taken 15 minutes without the small children’s shovel) you ask “what’s next”? The man handcuffs you to his own arm and says “follow me”. He takes you to different places around town and at each consecutive stop he dumps a larger bag of rotting garbage on the ground and tells you to pick it up. He says each time “you’ve used up the number of times you can use that shovel, you need to buy a new one”. So you buy a new shovel each time and the price for the shovel goes up $10 each time.
    After doing this 10 more times you have spent all your money and several hours of your time. The man turns to you and asks “well did you have fun?”
    What would your reaction be?

    Allow me to explain:
    I played this game for like 3 or 4 weeks. I understood it completely. It's hardcore pay 2 win (I stopped playing - but not without spending around 150€ before...). It's a battle simulation and this is it. I got one T3 commander (0.1% Chance...) but it doesn't matter if there are other ppl w more money to sink than you. You can get better "Hero Idle Missions" in the moment you get more Honor/Respect on your commanders you also get better mission -> this leads to: you spend more money, you get higher respect on ur commanders, you get better missions which actually allow you to get T3 points (like 60 from the multiple thousandths u need) also the amount of the points increases the more respect u get. This is loop which will rob your money like a casino if you get addicted to it. Trust me. I lived through it and stopped due to things in my personal life -luckily - it's actually funny finding your vid by now bc finally someone points at the mistakes.

Currently the server I'm on (server 16) you use gems to buy mathom chests to get commanders for your armies (thats one of the only things josh was actually correct about) but you also get to keep those commanders for the next season, essentially meaning you dont have to spend double gems to get the same commanders. There are also invitations you can get at a rare rate to instantly get the commander (he conveniently didn't show this in the video). So far I have only spent money on the season pass. It gives you like 50 ish mathom keys and between 5-8k gems. The only thing p2w about the game is being able to buy mathom keys, and even then, it's still way less p2w than other games purely because of the fact that you get to keep the commanders when season ends.

    I've seen and played several of these types of games mostly to get resources in much more competent games as a free bonus. These things are a dime a dozen and they even have taken over other larger titles as well like the Warhammer series most recently from what I've seen as well as things like star trek.

      creating a battleground for easily manipulated and/or rich people where the objective is to outspend the opposition is incredibly lucrative
      they have replaced the variables of skill and time investment with cash, people can go in and get that dopamine hit of defeating other players without investing time and getting good
      its all designed in a way to hook you in and psychologically manipulate you to spend money, thats why they all look and play the same, its the same tactic of manipulation

    I remember when games like these could only be played on websites like Kongregate or Armor Games because mobile phones weren't advanced enough for them. And in the over 10 years that have passed, I can see that aside from the better graphics, the only thing that has changed is that these days it looks like every game has the exact same UI.

    The only Lord of the Rings game that actually feels like being in a LotR novel is still (and probably always will be) levels 1-65 of Lord of the Rings Online.
    Later levels still draw from the lore but by then the legendary item grind has it's hooks in you and it tends to detract from the enjoyment considerably.

    I saw your video the day after downloading LOTR Rise to War, and I wanted to both thank you for your perspective, but also present another point of view. I think the crux of the matter has to do with what you yourself point out--that much of this is subjective because folks have different things they want out of a game. I have been playing free online games of this sort for decades, in fact, there were similar games like Ultima that I played when they first came out---personally my favorite kinds of games are either similar to RPGs like AD&D, or more strategic like Civilization (Civ4 BTS being my favorite). LOTR Rise is similar to many of the free online games I've played in many respects, and in fact your main criticisms are pretty much true of them all. They all try to get you to pay $ for in game boosts or what have you, but of course you don't really need them, especially if you're a casual player like me, who only play for a few minutes per day, or a few times per day. The action is definitely slow compared to the sorts of games you favor the most (glad you mentioned Guild Wars 2 in your post about your favorite games, because I've been meaning to check that out--it has universal appeal, from what I've seen). And finally, a lot of the rules aren't apparent right away, and that's how I came across your video, when trying to figure out something in this game that I have since figured out on my own. There's hardly a game I've encountered (especially online ones) that explain the rules and mechanics well (that's one thing I think Civ4 does a good job of); it's all a bit like reading the technical owner's manual for a piece of high tech equipment, translated poorly from some other language, leaving you frustrated when you have a simple question like "how do you turn the damn thing on?" Now that I'm on Day 6 of this game, I think I've figured out most of the rules on my own, though there's more to learn as always from youtube & other online forums.

      But single player can be replayed once you get the hang of them and generally have different difficulty levels. Multiplayer Games where you fall behind because things aren't explained properly are especially predatory as you may feel,like you have to pay to get to where you would have been if you hadn't missed x, y or z.

    • @Nerazmus
      @Nerazmus 2 года назад

      @@michaelh878 You know, there is this part of multiplayer games called "other players". You can engage them with properly worded questions in case you missed something or are not sure how something works.

      @michaelh878 2 года назад +1

      @@Nerazmus The game is absolute trash though. Probably took a few days to develop. Least they could do is make a proper tutorial and not rely on other players. But of course if there was a proper tutorial you would realize quicker how trash it is. By confusing you they hope you'll think there is more to the game and spend until the sunken cost fallacy kicks in.

    • @Nerazmus
      @Nerazmus 2 года назад

      @@michaelh878 It is still being developed. It has a proper tutorial that teaches you how to play it, well if you don't skip it like Josh did. Not that the tutorial is needed, it's pretty standard strategy game. If you are confused by it, you probably shouldn't be playing strategy games because this is about as basic as it gets.
      It is very clear that you never played that game, so your opinion is invalid.
