Hi, I'm Steve Romain. Welcome to my video on shaolin staff basics. Today I'll be demonstrating some of the fundamental techniques in order to help you understand how to use your staff a little better. We'll start with overhead swings.
To begin with, we'll start from our forwards stance. And this is a great way to train your stance and your weapon all at the same time. From here, you're going to bring your staff over your shoulder. Place your left hand on top of your right. You're going to begin by swinging the staff out to the side, bringing it behind you. As you bring it behind you, you want to tilt so that the staff should continue to flow past you, bringing it around so that it tucks underneath the arm, pivoting into your forwards stance, and then thrusting the palm out.
One more time, one, two, three, four, five. And then from, here, you just want to take the staff out, bring it around, and swing it like a baseball stick. And then it just starts over again. So, now I'll demonstrate full speed.
The next basic technique is what we call forward figure 8. From here, you're going to have your right hand firmly on the stick. Left hand is going to grasp with two fingers, and you use your thumb to guide it. As you bring your stick forward, bring it from side to side. You want the stick to travel as close to your body as possible. To reverse figure 8, for this one, you're going to have your right hand on the stick, and then place your left hand underneath. You're going to start by swinging behind you, and then bringing it up.
Now, it's really important to keep your elbows high. Because the ceiling here isn't that high, I'm going to go a little bit lower. You want to use your body with the stick. Now we're going to take a look at the uppercut and the chop. Again, we're going to bring the stick over the head, on to the shoulders. We're going to do a change step, and release the staff at a 45 degree angle. Let it rest on your left shoulder. Bring it down, letting it snap underneath your arm.
You can visualize coming up underneath somebody's head, and then striking back down on the back of their head. Again, up, and then, down. Full speed. And you'll practice these techniques with a lot of repetition, so you can get really good at them.
After studying Tae kwon do and boxing for the majority of my life, I have decided to studying tai chi and kung fu. It is certainly a difference but I am enjoying it. Great video's sir.
holy moly it's Morgan!!
Pineapple29 shut up😂😂😂
no way
I'm using the Donatello Bo staff toy.
Nice vid ur the first person I seen on utube using the same technique as kilik it would have been cooler if you used a traditional heavy weighted bo staff but wat ever works for you sifu, OSU
learn this basic well and even with simplest move you can be super good as bruce lee once said "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."
I finally found this Video :D ! I know a lot of staff Skills but I was searching for some Techniques that I don't know about it :) Really Helpful Video
you are best guy and superb fighter thank for giving easy Technics for us
This is hella cool to watch.
Damn these are good...
this has helped me so much, thank you.
I like the way you swing the Bo Staff like Baseball Bat
Very good bo staff technique👍
*clapping furiously*
finally some new techniques to practice, they seem more advanced than the ninjitsu ones I've learned
Mad props on your skill level! Your skills have reached epic proportions!
While a lot of them have functional attack in them, they primarily seem like the equavalant of kata's in martial arts in my eyes. Granted, the eyes of one not overly familiar with bo staff techniques for fighting with, but still.
Would love if anyone could give some more insights
This moves will help me practice at home thank you
Thank you so much for this and your other clear, free I might add and awesome teaching
These moves will help me in karate class so much thank you
Tennile Reese u mean Kung Fu class? Karate is a hand to hand type martial art.
Karate is bad.
man i am a big fan of kungfu i really want to learn those tricks from jake mace
+Antor Morsalin lol
Jake mace is a fake
man he makes me wanna swing a stick i dont have in my hand, almost pushed my computer off lmao
lovely flow of movements.
Im curious about the fonction of the forward finger 8. Is it to maintain distance and your space? It must be good for potential stance shift. People who would just walk into it and get hit by the stick would be rare. But I kind of don't see a way to clear the space or stop the others from closing in if they take the hit. You can get a lot of momentum if you do the finger 8 correctly, but would need a lot of control to not get brushed off or get a good hit. There are probably counters to that. But any insight?

Good stuff, Bro!!! : )
Awesome
also you need power and grip to make the twirling move effective and be able to hold your staff when you hit somebody otherwise it will be just a show
That was nicely done.
i actually learnd kendo from my mom and i knew 4 techbuques that he showed :D
the sounds the staff made at full speed... added in sound effects or just real awesomeness?
Most definitely real. I'm not half as good yet I can still make that kind of swirl sound
I came here so i can become like darth maul!
And I came to become a jedi
Lol bro that’s funny I was thinking the same thing to, Ive been watching ray park a lot, he by far changed the game for Star Wars back then, and he just sick in general with his style.. I hope they make a movie about how he survived in the trash pit after he was cut in half by obi! But if you think about what Maul used, would be like two Samurai double edge sword on both sides while doing all this lol
tysswe1 I’m here to chief man up like the Shaolin in For Honour
Down! Haha you got ps4
StrangeBrews4Life lipold me? Hell yeah
Figure 8 step is too fast., can you plz upload a video that exclusively teaching figure 8 in a detailed manner?
praveen jazz he did that on purpose just thumb first do a figure 8 with your hands separately and then switch by continue img the path of the hand with the other (thumb first) and that’s how you get the extra half a spin but I think the video is either sped up or he’s getting another half spin in
Ótimo
This video is 9 years old but Sifu Romain is a chad
This guy is skilled
I have a question how long should i staff be because i like woodworking and i wanna make my own staff bc this hobby looks fun
Wow master i want to teach ♥️
***** I believe the staff should be around the same general height as you are. Of course you wont find a staff normally that will be exactly that (unless you make your own. For example I am 6 foot 1 inch so I have a 6 foot staff.
Amazing
YOU ARE AMAZING
I like it..
How long should the staff be for these techniques? Top of your head? Eyebrow level?
wowowowowoow awesome show more i am learning shaolin kung fu using stick
Nice demonstration. Can you explain the purpose of the forward figure 8? I know many think it is just for show, but I'm assuming it is used mostly for transitioning between attacks. Am I correct?
Yes.
He makes it look so easy....
He's been doing that awhile 👍
The moment 2:20 hit.

Thanks for the video....................................... & THUMBS UP :D
what tree is the staff made from? What diameter and length it should be? Anyone help!!
+Dr-Ng'umbi Nickson Hassanally White wax wood is the preferred wood to make staffs like this. I wouldn't worry too much about the diameter (they usually work that in with the length) but as for length, try to get it as close to your own height as you can. A lot of places will recommend a 6 foot staff for adults, just as a general rule.
Also, you'll want to decide between a straight staff, & one that's tapered at the ends. Tapered staffs are faster (because of the weight/friction reduction), but can be more dangerous when sparring, especially with a jab. A straight staff (like you see here) will train your strength more, but will ultimately be slower.
Thanks, not for violence just body fitness
He’s so fast I can’t keep up 😅
what is the first move you do called?
Wow ! Nice !
Yo Yu Yu Hakusho is good Yoko Kurama is strong from what I've seen in dark tournament and girls like his looks in the show.

Im 12 and im so close to mastering some of them! The thing is=
-i could be crazy and use these to injure people accidentally
-im not an adult so i cant really do these as many measurements must be met like how long the stick is.
-its kinda hard to understand what he's saying and if i could be there to see it it may be easier.

ikr once he started that i was like oh boy i dont wanna think what will happen to ur head if that actually hits u
Funny you 😅😅😅
Like back 👌
Soon enough I'll be swinging my bo staff like a baseball stick 😂😂
Well Avatar is actually based on 4 different types of martial arts. Water Bending is quite obviously based off Tai Chi. Earth Bending is based on Hung Gar, Tiger & Crane Style Kung Fu. (although Toph actually uses a slight variation, mostly using only Crane Style). Air Bending is an odd style called Ba Gua, commonly known as the Monks Eight Trigram Palm. Fire Bending is based off Northern Shaolin Kung fu. pretty awesome.
really howcast.... youre better than these crappy sound effects(which you dont need)
Those don't sound like sound effects
you'd be surprised o.O
+Benjamin Uluiva Were I to bet on it, those aren't sound effects. Staffs really do make sound like that when you swing them fast enough (it's just like a propeller, the air can't get out of the way fast enough -- what you hear is the friction). Plus, the sound was low-fi and inconsistent, enough that I imagine it's being picked up from his lapel mic.
da ren wo bu li yong zheng zon zhiu er bu tha ren zai zen su ta kuang li qian mi zai ta li bu wu ghan chao ang hai zai fei ja hai chi sin mei zuo shie hsie hen huo ling she si he chi he chi hai she we have a different meaning in this arts as the allmighty budism dharma but thank s a lot for this original retreats
