Hi, I'm Steve Romain. Welcome to my video on shaolin staff basics. Today I'll be demonstrating some of the fundamental techniques in order to help you understand how to use your staff a little better. We'll start with overhead swings.
To begin with, we'll start from our forwards stance. And this is a great way to train your stance and your weapon all at the same time. From here, you're going to bring your staff over your shoulder. Place your left hand on top of your right. You're going to begin by swinging the staff out to the side, bringing it behind you. As you bring it behind you, you want to tilt so that the staff should continue to flow past you, bringing it around so that it tucks underneath the arm, pivoting into your forwards stance, and then thrusting the palm out.
One more time, one, two, three, four, five. And then from, here, you just want to take the staff out, bring it around, and swing it like a baseball stick. And then it just starts over again. So, now I'll demonstrate full speed.
The next basic technique is what we call forward figure 8. From here, you're going to have your right hand firmly on the stick. Left hand is going to grasp with two fingers, and you use your thumb to guide it. As you bring your stick forward, bring it from side to side. You want the stick to travel as close to your body as possible. To reverse figure 8, for this one, you're going to have your right hand on the stick, and then place your left hand underneath. You're going to start by swinging behind you, and then bringing it up.
Now, it's really important to keep your elbows high. Because the ceiling here isn't that high, I'm going to go a little bit lower. You want to use your body with the stick. Now we're going to take a look at the uppercut and the chop. Again, we're going to bring the stick over the head, on to the shoulders. We're going to do a change step, and release the staff at a 45 degree angle. Let it rest on your left shoulder. Bring it down, letting it snap underneath your arm.
You can visualize coming up underneath somebody's head, and then striking back down on the back of their head. Again, up, and then, down. Full speed. And you'll practice these techniques with a lot of repetition, so you can get really good at them.

    lovely flow of movements.
Im curious about the fonction of the forward finger 8. Is it to maintain distance and your space? It must be good for potential stance shift. People who would just walk into it and get hit by the stick would be rare. But I kind of don't see a way to clear the space or stop the others from closing in if they take the hit. You can get a lot of momentum if you do the finger 8 correctly, but would need a lot of control to not get brushed off or get a good hit. There are probably counters to that. But any insight?

praveen jazz he did that on purpose just thumb first do a figure 8 with your hands separately and then switch by continue img the path of the hand with the other (thumb first) and that’s how you get the extra half a spin but I think the video is either sped up or he’s getting another half spin in

***** I believe the staff should be around the same general height as you are. Of course you wont find a staff normally that will be exactly that (unless you make your own. For example I am 6 foot 1 inch so I have a 6 foot staff.

what tree is the staff made from? What diameter and length it should be? Anyone help!!

    • @dr.zoidberg8666
      @dr.zoidberg8666 9 лет назад

+Dr-Ng'umbi Nickson Hassanally White wax wood is the preferred wood to make staffs like this. I wouldn't worry too much about the diameter (they usually work that in with the length) but as for length, try to get it as close to your own height as you can. A lot of places will recommend a 6 foot staff for adults, just as a general rule.
Also, you'll want to decide between a straight staff, & one that's tapered at the ends. Tapered staffs are faster (because of the weight/friction reduction), but can be more dangerous when sparring, especially with a jab. A straight staff (like you see here) will train your strength more, but will ultimately be slower.

Im 12 and im so close to mastering some of them! The thing is=
-i could be crazy and use these to injure people accidentally
-im not an adult so i cant really do these as many measurements must be met like how long the stick is.
-its kinda hard to understand what he's saying and if i could be there to see it it may be easier.

Well Avatar is actually based on 4 different types of martial arts. Water Bending is quite obviously based off Tai Chi. Earth Bending is based on Hung Gar, Tiger & Crane Style Kung Fu. (although Toph actually uses a slight variation, mostly using only Crane Style). Air Bending is an odd style called Ba Gua, commonly known as the Monks Eight Trigram Palm. Fire Bending is based off Northern Shaolin Kung fu. pretty awesome.

+Benjamin Uluiva Were I to bet on it, those aren't sound effects. Staffs really do make sound like that when you swing them fast enough (it's just like a propeller, the air can't get out of the way fast enough -- what you hear is the friction). Plus, the sound was low-fi and inconsistent, enough that I imagine it's being picked up from his lapel mic.
