Driving Through Arizona Dust Storm (Haboob)- July 21, 2012

- Right around minute 9:00 in the video is where it approaches near zero visibility. Other times while in the storm were difficult to see as well.
I was driving on the freeway when a nice dust storm appears in the East Valley (Mesa/Gilbert), Arizona. I attempted to beat the dust storm (Haboob) home but didn't quite make it. There were points while driving where I had near zero visibility, as can be seen toward the end of the video. The winds in this storm appeared to have higher speeds than the last large storm over a year ago on July 5, 2011 (which I also happened to drive through and record).
The video is long. I basically kept the camera rolling as I approached and then drove through the storm. It is interesting to see the dramatic change in the environment from the semi-clear day to that within the dusty storm.
After the dust storm rolled through we then got drenched (for Arizona) with rain. A nice way to make the thick coat of dirt/sand stick and solidify to anything it just dusted.
Enjoy.

I'm 15 and in the ADOT handbook it specifically states that you should stop your car on the side of the road
+Pzkw V That's what I HAD to do while on the 10 Freeway on the way to Tucson. It was pitch black...not like this video at all. ALL cars had to pull over because the dust storm was so violent and dirt/dust covered all the windows. It was surreal...and scary!!
+Pzkw V You're correct buddy. People continue to drive regardless though because it is still visible when it comes by at times. It does indeed say to pull over in the handbook. There is a reason its in the handbook and it is because it can get extremely dangerous. But people tend to do it only when its zero visibility like it happens towards the end of the video. It would always be a wise choice to pull over. But, if you do continue driving, be cautious and take extra precautions like the driver still took in this video. Hope you drive safe when u get ur license :)
yes nonsense Thank you. I have my permit right now.
.
+Pzkw V Yes the handbook says that you should do that, but there's no law on the books that says you have to...I have been on the I-10 down by Picacho Peak and the visibility was even worse than shown in this video witnessed an 18 wheeler plow into cars that had pulled off to the side of the road...
The perks of living in the desert. What a great place
I out ran one once . I just left the VA Hospital in Phoenix heading back to Buckeye. I looked in my rearview mirror and seen it coming. What a trip. As soon as I pulled up to my driveway and got into the house it hit. That was close. Good video. Thanks.
cant even begin to imagine cleaning your house after this lol
It's a nightmare. Me and my whole family had to spend hours cleaning after this happened
Screw the house imagine our cars
+Haazardz Right? Well my house is usually fine.. Except for the back and front yard.
+Haileigh Wilborn yeah a lil water will do lol
Rains usually come after and wash it all off natually.
Yeap, I was there, remember it well, tried to get back to my apartment before it got to me, didn't make it lol, that sand mixed with wind is no joke.
I can feel the smell of the dust and cool wind in my mind 😍😍
At 8:42 was somebody out in THAT walking their dog? I live in Toronto, so we just do not get this. Pretty cool and eerie at the same time watching this from my desktop but if I was in the car with you, I'd be FREAKING out. One question, these dust storms, how long do they last. Hours. Days
They look a LOT worse than they actually are. The visibility inside of one is actually pretty good. The ONLY thing to hate about them is that other weather occurrences involve water, this is literally just dirt. Pure dirt. EVERYTHING gets dirty. You do not want to have just taken a shower only to realize that you'll have to go out in this weather. xD
I'm from Toronto too and this is freaking me out just watching it! How do these storms form is what I can't figure out?
We have a lot of loose dirt and when the wind picks up... this happens, it's the same as with the sand storms over in Africa.
Eunice Dominguez Chacon Oh okay, 1 question what would happen if an airplane is about to land but there`s a dust storm like this?
Peter Pulciani They always have weather and winds on radar and can always avoid it

That's awesome! Makes everything red and orange and then the street lights came cuz it got darker. My sister lived in Las Vegas so I don't know if she ever witnessed one or not.
He starts driving threw it at around the 5 minute mark.
That is some serious dust all sorts of stuff is in that monster I remember everything going black when I got out of the car I was covered in desert sweat and dust had ants crawling on me that thing was huge
You all have never lived in Arizona have you? It's a dust storm, not the end of the world.
Never had a problem with them, bring a jacket so you don't get sanded to death and if it gets bad, my grandpa who is a scout leader in Mesa taught us to hunch down into a ball off the sidewalk so you don't get hit by other walkers or bikers, and if (ha IF) there's a wall nearby like most walgreens, gas stations, some businesses duck down.
Oliver Carpenter
Calm down there, drama queen.
Oliver Carpenter yes, every person who has ever watched this lives in Arizona.
Oliver Carpenter I live in Edmonton Canada do you really think we get dust storms. The worst we get is a snow storm but it’s not really that bad
... and that's why we watch sand storms videos here in RUclips.
I think I remember this one. This video was right near where I lived. It was the darkest I have ever seen it!
That is actually caused by the monsoon storms that build up in southern Arizona. I live in Tucson and our monsoons come from the south and move north towards Phoenix. They never used to get these dust storms only until recently 5+ years. All the land between Tucson and Phoenix was cleared and leveled to only dirt to build housing and more shops. Now days they get a few of these dust storms during summer time because the monsoon storms that move north pick up all that dirt where there was once cactus and Sonoran desert.
I live in Arizona and that's actually pretty normal for us. that storm isn't as bad as what we've gotten before, we typically get those kind of storms 5 times or more every year, but trust me you don't want to be outside when that happens, it feels like you're about to fly away and you get a bunch of dust in your eyes, and things flying around everywhere. its not that scary to us just pretty much normal.
I live in AZ and this dude is trippin. We hardly ever get them this clearly defined.

You see, many people from other states think the dust storms here in Arizona is like a wall of dense sand that will suffocate and crush you but in reality it’s just loose dust, they’re even fun and amazing to look at!!
The dust just go into your lung and stay there for the rest of your life. When they do autopsy, I bet they can know how many dust storm you have gone through.
Try living through when you have asthma then come talk to me. No they’re really not that fun.
Why do people keep saying having your hazard lights on are stupid. I dont think it is, this way you can actually see the light in front of you if theres a car. Ive done this multiple times when a car slows down really quickly in front so the person behind knows something is up. Dont see the harm in it.
nathan ellison because the hazards blinking on your car causes delays in other peoples reaction times to hit their brakes when you hit your breaks. Hazard lights are ONLY suppose to be used if your car is disabled. Not while you are driving. You might think you are doing people a favor by driving around with your blinkers on, but you are actually putting yourself and others at more risk.
Patrick Paris so hazard lights are ONLY supposed to be used when your car is disabled? Hmmmm, I would use them if I had to pull over real quick to help with something hazardous and I would have to turn my hazard lights on so that people driving would notice and move around in time, better at night.
Patrick Paris if your going that slow, then I dont see the issue. Otherwise people wouldnt even be able to see the car. Im sure others would know why the hazard lights are on in that situation. And when the traffic is dead stop ahead and ive put my hazards on, im doing people a favor because then they'll know for sure they need to stop. If im at a dead stop on a freeway from traffic that was really sudden, I am basically just like a broken down car and its a hazard
Patrick Paris I live in the central valley and on winter mornings it gets crazy foggy. The hazards lights actually work better in determining distance than just headlight (especially on rural 2 lane roads).
Patrick Paris actually it's written in the AZ driving regulations not to use the hazard lights. I was wondering why... now it's clarified thx
I would imagine driving through one of these is not good for your car??
