That “Good Luck son” is such a great line. Especially given Will’s abusive upbringing. Someone showing genuine pride in what “Will” is about to become.
Everytime I think of Robin, this is the first role that comes to mind. Perfectly captured the range of his talent, making you feel heartbreak, love, joy and fear over the course of this film. Truly beautiful work.
The "good luck son" part is obviously just a term of endearment from an older guy to a younger one, but it really does double as a surrogate fatherly type of statement. I feel like Sean knew Will needed to hear that as a final seal to send him on his way. And I do agree with other comments expressing the look of comfort in both Will and Sean's eyes as they're both not only glad to have known each other, but that they'll definitely miss each other from now on. Really incredible on top of an already incredible movie. When people ask me what's my favorite movie ever, there's just too many to name but for an art film overall - this is the one.
"Does this violate the Patient-Doctor relationship?" "Nah, only if you grab my ass" Such a great line to release the tension and bring a little bit of humor in such an emotional situation. Phenomenal way to close the bridge. Great line but an even better performance
Everything must come to an end. The "time is up" for the relationship they had and now they will move forward in different directions, yet better men because of each other. Both of them needed each other more than anything else at this point in their lives.
One of my favorite movies. Amazing powerful performances by a great cast. Robin, Damon, Ben and all the supporting cast were superb. The screenwriting was magnificent and deserved an Oscar in it's own right.
such a damn perfect scene. sean saying thank you back to will for how much hes impacted and benefitted him as well and then using the light humour thats worked so well in putting will at ease at what is probably a moment of immense doubt and anxiety as hes moving past this step/stage of therapy that he had become comfortable with after a lot of resistance. I relate to will and this scene, can imagine its almost like a fear of "relapsing" into the same pitfalls and indulging the same fears/defensive mechanisms that you let control you and ultimately stagnate your life...
Never picked up on this before. A perfect scene. Stirs up a lot of emotions, sometimes getting a genuine good luck from someone can really make a huge difference in your life.
This is such a peaceful scene to me for some reason. I find I keep coming back to watch it. Just seeing Will being so genuine and grateful to shaun is really nice, its like all his hardships are over and now hes free from his pain and can start finally being truly happy :)
One of my favorite details in this scene is how they are sitting. In the other therapy scenes, they are sitting very far apart. Will takes the furthest seat possible, avoids eye contact, and constantly is looking around the room, or getting up, walking around, lighting up a cigarette, something... ANYTHING to avoid. Slowly, he sits facing Sean, gets a little closer, gradually... As his trust grows. In this scene, Will is clearly apprehensive about the end of their sessions, but he's sitting close, keeping steady eye contact, totally at ease. The level of trust, respect, and genuine caring is clearly evident in every word and movement here. Proximity, physical contact, all of it. Another great detail in what I consider one of the finest, most nuanced films in history.
Of all the movies I have seen on geniuses - this one is exceptional. Every scene, every line is touching. Good Will Hunting is without a doubt one of the best Hollywood movies
I just finished a year of therapy for PTSD and honesty it was pretty similar to this. Just a summary report, a light convo, and the goodbye. No hug tho lol - just a handshake
My mom spent about an hour with Robin and had no idea who he was. She was baby sitting at an entertainment party because she knew her grand-kids would be there and would be totally bored. Robin came into the room because he wanted to be away from all the "Hollywood" stuff." They talked about raising kids, etc. She said he was very nice and quite shy and genuine. I imagine the character that he played in this great movie was very close to the real Robin.
My english teacher lived in LA for 5 years. She told us about abt how she was chillin on a bench in Lake Hollywood Park. When a man sat next to her. They talked for half an hour until she realized it's him.
Robin Williams clowning around never thrilled me because it always seemed like it was a distraction from him being the REAL him. This role has to be closest to who Robin was in real life and its heart breaking because he could play a part like this in which he helped someone face their personal demons while he was battling his own. RIP Robin
I love how you can see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice when Will hugs Shaun at 1:38 that he really bonded with him and doesn't want to say goodbye.
I think he was all those things. People that knew him said he was as effortlessly funny in real life as he was on stage. But Williams was funny because he genuinely wanted other people to be happy, and theres nothing like a good laugh to put people in a positive mood. He had a dark side, and he had a quiet and emotional side. But he also had a maniac funny side, and that was part of the real robin williams too.
It is a very convincing insight even if not true. True Robin Williams, emotional, caring, loving his family, a bit sad and lost. Like the man on the boat in the picture.
i know, im trying to find good movies like this or waiting to see if anyone will release a movie similar to this but there just isnt. I think its time too look into foreign movies, I know french have really great movies that can be similar to this. Dang US is making dumb movies with dumb stories and all action only.
“Hey…Goodluck son” that just about knocked Will over. Both like the fisherman in the storm, finally breathing a sigh of relief at the breaking sunlight - Beautiful film.
A good friend Free Will is a positive vibe for others he gets it honest his mom's a saint and he's blessed with beautiful and handsome blessings gifts from a highest power
You could see even here that Will was worried Sean would reject him and say "Sorry kid, our sessions are over I don't want to see you anymore." Even if you know intellectually the truth that can heal you, it still takes a lot of time to recover from feelings of rejection or betrayal. He 1:10 he almost seems surprised when Sean turns around to give him the answering machine phone number. Sean wanting to keep in touch with Will when he doesn't have to was probably was just as healing for Will as the actual sessions he had with him.
There are doctors and then there are workers. If you find a doctor who genuinely wants to help people you have found a keeper. They are easy to see if you are looking
I've experienced something like that with a client who had a history not so different from Will's. The institution that was paying for her therapy decided they wouldn't pay any more as she had run away. But she kept in touch with me and I kept seeing her regularly every week. After 3 months I told her that I didn't get paid and kept seeing her because I love her and feel responsible for her and later towards the end of our work she told me that that made her believe she deserves being loved and is not some monster that everybody will reject. She's been in a stable relationship with a loving and caring partner for a year now, finally healing. ❤️
i saw this on a plane and they dubbed over Seans line "only if you grab my ass" and replaced it with "only if I turn around" - which i thought was even funnier
This scene makes you appreciate that these sessions were as much therapy for Sean as they were Will. They both had trust issues, and through their symbiotic relationship they both conquered their fears
Being from Boston I remember when they were filming this movie. The headlines were Robin Williams filming a movie in Boston. It was a huge deal for the city of Boston and appropriately so. Little did they know the explosion that was about to take place with Damon and Affleck..
"When Sean Said;GOOD LUCK SON,AND WILL TURNED AROUND WITH SO MUCH APPRECIATION AND ENDEARMENT.And put his hand up and signaled back" Wow!! What A Scene..Real Tears Shed!!!!✨️🤞🏿🎬
A sequel idea. Sean remarries a younger woman, has a son, names him Will. Sean dies . Younger Will is now 24 and in trouble, and Older Will has to counsel him. 😉.
I have a friend who was in an improv class with Robin Williams. (They were fellow students.) Halfway through the course, the instructor started saying to Robin, do something that's not funny, as he could see that for Robin being funny was always the easiest choice.
@@alwaysuseless I think it would be fair to say that Bicentennial Man is quite cheesy. Personally, I was able to look past the film's issues, and really enjoyed the story it told. If you enjoy Robin Williams' work, Bicentennial Man is worth watching.
@@tachoudhury Thanks. Cheesy is kind of the impression I got from what I could glean from IMDb. I'll look for a free version. There's already so much to watch that I know is going to be good.
Id of liked to of seen a scene where he thanked Lambeau too, Lambeau did an awful lot for him and Will wouldn't of gotten anywhere at all if not for him, I no at times he came across as arrogant and he didn't always say or do the right things but his heart was in the right place, he cared for Will and wanted to see him succeed.
This isn't a termination, that happens when a client doesn't show up and provider terminates services, this is a close. And that is the hardest part for a therapist as well as the client. That line "Do what's in your heart son, you'll be fine." Find a therapist to whom you relate, bond. This was shown throughout this movie. "He's from Southy?" This is about as real as it gets. I'm a psycho-therapist working with CBT clients. I did a lot of work in the correctional system both adult and juvenile. That scene about Shawn sitting in silence "He just sat there watching the minutes tick away, it was quite impressive...only I can't talk first." That's real, then Will tells the airline joke. I love that.
Yes. Find a therapist that specializes in what you need and you can bond with. As a patient who’s been twice before for short stints (only like 4-5 sessions each), actually CHOOSING a therapist instead of just random click made ALL the difference. Just finished 1 yr for PTSD and it was pretty similar to this. Respect for what you do btw ❤
Also, any advice as for letting go? My therapist said I can leave everything at his door. It hit me like 2 days later and I just cried out of joy cuz I could feel myself letting go
I recently had a breakthrough with my mental health and seeing Will hesitate to get up when 'time is up' is such a subtle but powerful moment. I love this movie so much. Also, just noticed this. Sean puts his hand on Will's neck in such an endearing nature, juxtaposed against when Will destroyed his painting in their first session and Sean was aggressive. Idk if that was intentional but I've seen this movie 100 times and only just noticed that. In any case, this is a perfect scene to end their therapy sessions.
That “Good Luck son” is such a great line. Especially given Will’s abusive upbringing.
Someone showing genuine pride in what “Will” is about to become.
I was literally going to comment that and I saw your comment
Good luck Son.. Meant so much to will in that scene.
i'm sure it meant a lot to sean too
it was an improv'd line
Just the way he delivers the line bc he’s HIM to Matt bc he’s HIM in this beautifully written movie. I loved it young. Now I love it even more.
If you teared up after he said it, it's not your fault.
It was everything
Everytime I think of Robin, this is the first role that comes to mind. Perfectly captured the range of his talent, making you feel heartbreak, love, joy and fear over the course of this film. Truly beautiful work.
Watch Sir Robin in the Louie CK series. It's a brief segment but he really brings it across with Louie.

You nailed it.
That’s exactly what I was thinking then I literally saw your comment. Robin Williams played a good father figure. Rip 😭

The last line here “good luck son” is key in this scene. That’s what he needed.
‘Good luck, son.’ That’s all Will needed to hear. That blessing.
And imagine how Will felt saying goodbye after such a short time with a fatherly type that seemed to genuinely care for him. It’s a profound scene.
